Dunrobin Castle is a historic home located in Sutherland, in the Highland area of Scotland, and is the most northerly of Scotland's great houses.
The earliest part of the building dates back to around 1275, and it was first mentioned as a stronghold of the family in 1401.
The castle has been called home to the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland since the 13th century and was built in the midst of a tribal society, with both Norse and Gaelic in use at the time.
The Sutherlands were one of the most powerful families in Britain with many important matrimonial and territorial alliances.
The castle was encased by a series of additions from the 16th century onwards, and in 1785 a large extension was constructed. The castle is perched on a high terrace above walled gardens and overlooks the Moray Firth, just north of the villages of Golspie and Dornoch.
Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the castle, which includes the grand staircase, the drawing-room, the dining room, the library, and the bedrooms. The castle also has a museum, which houses a collection of Pictish stones, clan memorabilia, and other artefacts.
The castle's gardens are also a popular attraction, featuring a formal garden, a woodland walk, and a falconry display.
The story of Dunrobin Castle is deeply entwined with the story of the Earls, and later the Dukes, of Sutherland.
The castle is the factual and spiritual home of Clan Sutherland, their motto is Sans Peur, which means "without fear".
Dunrobin Castle has faced challenges throughout its history, including a damaging fire during its use as a naval hospital in 1915. However, the castle's resilience prevailed, and renowned Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer oversaw its restoration after World War 1.
