I remember Marsh Lane Fields so well from when I was small. In the early 1950's I used to go to Church Road Infants School and later Church Road Primary School. The school has since been renamed Willow Brook There were a number of routes I could take to school, but my favourite was across these fields after going down Ive Farm Close. There was no school run then, few people had cars, and even at the ages of 5-7 years old, we were expected to walk. I knew nothing of the history of the fields then or their importance, but even though I no longer live in London, these fields often appear in my dreams. It's a feeling of this area is mine which really means, it belongs to the people.
Love you John and u can say what you want. I love your solo walks so much and the music just puts me into a deep sleep
I grew up in Walthamstow in the 40 ,s & 60s, lowhall farm was behind our garden with the Dagenham brook, we used to sail in the brook in bath tubs, never appreciated it at the time, how lucky we were, I do now though, went back there a few years ago, was told by the cab driver it’s become a no go area, what a shame, I knew those fields well, marsh lane etc. Thank for the memory.
Another video shows me that despite spending most of my adult life (last 25+ yrs) walking around Tottenham/Walthanstow/Leyton and Hackney Marshes I never knew about this place, thanks.
Love this place. Our sunday football team used to train. here (forest united) in the 90's. Alot of the players came from churchmead primary school which is at the entrance of marsh lane (we were in secondary school whilst playing for the team the school was george mitchell) There is also a place we would go that was magical and was known as the rifle range, it was the other side of lea bridge road behind the old B&Q basically.
Thanks John, so many memories for me.
1967 ish.

Really enjoyed this - not often you see the Dagenham Brook looking as nice as that.
Bit surprised you didn't notice how the traffic noise has increased after the council cut down the bushes and trees between the fields and Orient Way. Thanks.
gabriel ellenberg Thanks - it was looking nice that day. I think the traffic dropped off a bit in the evening - I was there between around 6 - 8pm and it seemed to fluctuate a bit.
lived in Hackney since 1999,know the other side of the lea on marshes quite well.but had never been here. and coz of this film popped over yesterday with boys and dog.. I can see why you describe it as one of your favourites. Dagenham Brook too.. following the lea in direction from where? I wonder .
+John Leach great, I was there the other week again, love it. I think, off the top of my head, that the Dagenham Brook may join with the Coppermill Stream in Walthamstow, it certainly heads in that direction - it merges with the Fillebrook under the mini roundabout on Ruckholt Road/Orient Way
Big heron.
you should do guided tours John
Una Obrien I keep thinking about it Una - maybe in the summer holidays. Thanks for the support
John Rogers already booked my flight from Ireland! lol

Hi Nadeem - you can access it from Orient Way now over a bridge or from Marsh Lane off Church Road - it's great

Tricky question, I’m not sure, there are some camp sites around Epping Forest and Sewardstone but they’re more for a short stay
