Xenagod mentioned.
He was the first deck I made from the ground up. It's cozy to read out a card and say "It's bad news if Etali attacks, but it has no haste. Anyway, moving to combat, Xenagos gives it haste." People asking why you're not moving your commander to the command zone after a boardwipe and you point to either the indestructible part, or the devotion part. Saccing creatures with Greater Good so you don't meet the devotion requirement to dodge a -x/-x, sacrifice or exile targeting creatures. You only pull a Xenagos + Bloodthirster on turn 4 once, before your table starts getting antsy and leaving mana open around that turn.
I also get the vibe that there's a pipeline, where if you built Xenagos, you'll inevitably build from among Henzie, Maelstrom Wanderer and Ziatora.
Greater Good is nutso in that deck.
Xenagos was my first deck I put together myself, and I'm thinking of a henzie deck. Maybe there's something to that pipeline

Im still really new to magic, so my checklist for picking a new commander is 1) does it look sick and 2) does it do something I havent tried before

I posted it recently in the discord but I bought my wife a cheap Kangee Sky Warden deck that is just flying tribal. I think that's another great way to teach new players. Simple mechanics, and it wins surprisingly more often than you'd think.

I came back and reached out to one of my brothers who went, "Yo, build Edric. Game plan is cheap evasive creatures, draw until you get something to turn all those 1/1s into beefy chads Overrun-style. Cost is super low, and it's good enough to hang while you figure out what you really like."
Miirym is a good call too, play Double Dragon with your bros.
I like Edric, Spymaster! That's a good idea. I have a Rigo build that's similar.
Great vidya as always! A lot of good advice. You definitely have some easy to build around commanders, but you can't overestimate how much of a threat you'll appear to be for playing something like Miirym, Tatyova or Aesi for instance. In fact, just don't play Simic as a beginner or you might get dumped on lol. But really, you can always pick what appeals to you and go from there.

I definitely choose my commander based on body. That's why my favourite ones are Talrand, Odric and Mimeoplasm.

For me it's universe beyond that suckers me into liking what my commanders are my fav and then after that it gets into more detailed, like swarmlord being my first commander and also including my indominus rex for both of them having aggressive heavy hitting creatures with big numbers on them or just overall a threat, or if I'm feeling evil either my mothman or kelermorph to either mill or burn them, and finally on building a big game plan like with calgar deck on making token or my ashad deck for a final endgame

I built a landfall deck w riku of twin reflections, at first it felt super janky but getting four landfall triggers off of an instant right before my upkeep goes hard
I had an inquisitor eisenhorn deck focus on combo-ing infinite turns with time sieve lol
