Landslide 2020: Women Take the Lead - Anne Spencer Garden & House, Lynchburg, VA

In the early- to mid-twentieth century Harlem Renaissance poet Anne Spencer created and refined this residential garden built on the site of a former Civil War Confederate encampment. In the 1930s it was a gathering space for Spencer’s friends and colleagues such as famed Black writer W.E.B. Dubois and others. The site’s director and curator, her granddaughter Shaun Spencer-Hester, recalls the garden’s history and Spencer’s life.
