Like you, I like to see new or unreleased concert footage or original interviews but since that is generally rare I have been enjoying the retrospective videos I’ve been seeing using photos and interviews from the past that have these slow moving images! Like Beatles in the studio and since there are only stills available the narrator talks over the photos in detail. This technique works rather well in most cases! What do you think? Frequently there is no live footage available and it’s the next best thing I’d say!

Here's another thing. If any of these documentaries are authorized by the John Lennon estate you should ask for review copies of them. I'm not sure if you are aware of this. But, even if there is a theatric release. They make a small amount of DVDs for reviewers. So I would politely ask them for any of these biopics. I’m definitely interested in this but will keep my expectations low. I’m with you on the talking heads although the documentary of Lennon in NY from 2010 had some talking heads and was good. Especially people who were with John in the studio like Earl and Jack Douglas. And there was a snippet of other footage of J and Y walking in Central Park and signing an autograph that I had never seen before. I enjoyed Fred Seaman’s book from the 90s. Regardless of what one thinks of him, he was there and had moments with John that were unique and the book seemed to me at least to be authentic and honest. (And his name was notably absent from list so I assume this is Lennon estate approved.) There’s a lot about John in 1980 that hasn’t really been explored. Especially the first half. His time in Florida, the sailing trip, his trip to South Africa, Bermuda. I don’t know how much possible insight or footage might be there but I’ll certainly be watching it.
I guess it can depend on who the talking head is and their connection to the topic. Genuine people who knew him can sometimes give an insight. I doubt Fred Seaman was given the time of day for this project to be honest
Great news Tony. But I must admit it’s been a tad Beatle sensory overload lately. I guess we, as fans, should be happy. But with limited budgets etc. it can be overwhelming. Cheers 🍻🤠🎵🎶🎼👍
John's last live performance was a strange affair. In 1975 he appeared on a tv variety show for Sir Lew Grade who owned Lennon and McCartney's songs. John and his backing band dressed up really weird and an offensive lettering message was visible on the drum kit towards Grade.
@@KatharineShaw-z8u me neither although his backing bans had face masks on the back of the heads indicating grade was somewhat two-faced. Also the drum kit had BOMF on it which apparently stood for 'brothers of mother-fuckers' so maybe a couple of digs there
Beatley Toney: I try not to judge anything UNTIL I have actually seen it. It may be a documentary like the others you may not be fond of. However, the possibility exists that this one could or would be different. Just as in new Beatles-related books, the reader and the viewer are the ultimate judges of the quality of the work. I have had reviewers that I respect give a bad review to something that I may personally enjoy and find interesting. However, I do agree if they did the documentary the "right way" multiple documentaries would probably not be necessary!
Tony King knew Lennon well. He was his personal assistant during the lost weekend. Elliot Minz and Elton John were close also. If they have Andy Peebles then Yoko won’t approve it. Peebles went around saying how fake their marriage was (Peebles just didn’t get it) and his regrets for doing the 1980 interview. It’s weird that they’ve not announced how One to One will be released given the hype about it over past three months but I did see a request from Sean for more info on film festivals around the world so it’s possible that they will do that first although a waste of time if you ask me.
Strange one about Peebles - he was up their arses during the interview. I think we can probably dismiss whatever Peebles decided to use to draw attention to himself . He only spent a weekend with them.
It'll be interesting to see what Andy Peebles has to say. In the years since his iconic interview with John & Yoko two days before his death he's formed a very different opinion of their relationship than he did at the time. Yoko kept him in the loop for a few years after but then after he left the BBC she never spoke to him again, and he seems to be quite bitter about it. I also hope they focus 99.9% of the time on his life. There's been too many books and documentaries about the murderer when the basic truth is that John was shot dead on the street by a lunatic.
Yes the less fame that is given to that parasite the better (and im not talking about Peebles) lol, I hope that part of the film can be dealt with without even mentioning his name. Peebles is an odd one, he was up the Lennon's arses during the interview and then 40 years later he's slagging them off on Twitter. It 's just attention seeking !
I'm with you on the talking heads documentaries, and a three and a half hour one on John's last decade? I'll keep an open mind on this as I did enjoy Alan G Parkers doc on SGT Pepper some years ago, but I do remain a little skeptical. I don't know if you're aware of the upcoming biopic on Brian Epstein "Midas Man" on Prime from Oct 30th. I have seen several trailers and to be honest I'm not that impressed. I will give it the benefit of the doubt and watch it even so. It's funny, because someone recently asked me as a Beatles fan why their story has not made it to the big screen like Elvis, Queen and Elton John did in the last few years, my answer was simple. Apple. They will want complete control of this, and of course there's the thorny subject of the music, but I did point out that we are getting four Movies from Sam Mendes, each one telling the story from the perspective of each Beatle, again not entirely sure about this. The only one I am excited about is Beatles 64 coming out on Nov 29th.
I think it should be really good especially the directors rough cut at 3.5 hours Terry. I will probably watch Midas man but ive never been a big fan of the biopic especially if they are about artists that I really love. 90 minutes is never enough to tell a life story in properly . Yes im also looking forward to Beatles '64
Also: the Elliot Mintz memoir is out on the 22 Oct. He's always struck me as risibly smug, but it can't be denied he spent a lot of time with John and Yoko, so it might be worth a perusal.
I've had similar misgivings about Mr. Mintz. But then I learned that when he was a DJ back in 1972, someone brought a just-released copy of Sometime in New York City into his studio. Without hesitating he played all four sides back to back on live radio. And then he was fired for it the next day. So while he may appear to be a bit sycophantic, there is no longer any doubt in my mind that he was all in for the Lennons. He did a lot more than just say nice things about them.
Beatley My Friend, great video, Borrowed Time will be fantastic, it will be interesting to know what they know, My Friend another document but for me it means a lot , John Forever , Thank You My Friend, take care, be safe , how you feeling, you look great, bless you, Steve
I think talking heads are fine if they were actually there and can give context or perspective. I don’t like it when they prop up some “expert” or comedian to comment on events when they weren’t there or if it’s more than obvious that we’re more of a fan than they are. I’m still going to watch it and see.
@@beatleytonesbeatleschannel No criticism intended. I agree with you about the type of docs you’ve seen with the talking heads. There a lot of docs here that are like that. I don’t like the generic ones where there are few people close to the person and no rights to the music.
I'm excited by the new Borrowed Time documentary but a little disappointed that the One to One documentary isn't the full concert, so I'll have to keep my old Betamax copy after all. I already ordered Daytime Revolution though. I hope these new docs will depict the human side of John as there has been so many distortions & falsehoods by the current cancel culture.
Jeez Tone! I hope they are paying you double time and half, with all this promotion you are doing for Apple and The Lennon Estate. With all these different products. As far as documentary's on John, for me it would take a hell of a lot to beat the 2010 "LennoNYC". @@beatleytonesbeatleschannel My bro also keeps sending me texts, W/Apps, as well like between 3 or 4 am! Beginning to wonder if we, are all, turning into insomniacs!!😮💨
Sounds interesting, Tone, but I kind of avoid documentaries, books, articles, etc., about John's final years, because even after all these years, the ending hurts too much. I'd rather just listen to John's music and read his own words in his own write.
We have a music video streaming service in Canada, called Stingray. And they show a lot of these "talking heads" documentaries. And while what they're talking about is interesting, the documentary itself usually isn't. I feel this way about the documentary included with the latest Jimi Hendrix box set. So, I'm not too hopeful about this upcoming John Lennon documentary.
Amen to the talking heads parade. However, I've enjoyed the books by many of the people you listed off, so maybe there will be something to it. It sounds ambitious........ Hopefully not an ambitious failure. BTW, if you ever need help securing US only releases, you can always reach out to me and I'll do anything I can to help out.
hi Pete, talking heads if they are close to the topic then they can give a great insight. I shouldn't have really generalised but it's when they wheel out someone irrelevant just because they used to be famous it drives me nuts. Thanks for the offer, appreciate that mate
another thing bout those documentaries with lots of talking heads is hardly any of them were even alive at the time let alone maybe 4 or5 yrs old i don't like those either so i imagine this one will have film footage interspersed coz even about john Lennon I'd find it hard to sit through, thanks for the info take care.
Me, I think I'll just fly past this one. I mean if it were on a channel that I had on the TV that I didn't have to pay for maybe I'd watch it. Otherwise whatever.
Alan G. Parker made a brilliant dvd about The Beatles. "50 Years Ago" A brilliant film with loads of content. I was interviewed by Alan because my American girlfriend and I at the time saw John being interviewed on the Old Grey Whistle Test. Telling the viewers what he was missing from THE UK. Like Chocolate Olvers. Etc etc. So we were going back to New York, anyway so we went fully loaded. And eventually headed to The Dakota. And met John. He was totally surprised. So Alan interviewed me about our trip. Fun had by all. I think we've been cut-out. Won't know till I see the documentary
Fantastic story Graham. Remember that interview being shown on dec 9th 1980. I didnt have a clue what chocolate Olivers were - still dont lol. Hope your interview survives the cut. The list that was provided i think were famous people only so i guess it doesnt mean your interview was cut. Your brand is growing mate. Abbey Road book, now this. Fan club awaits 😀
Rich, dark chocolate, generously enrobed around a crisp slow-baked biscuit Chocolate Olivers are the ultimate biscuit indulgence, made using a patented recipe from the 1930’s, which includes hops and malt, with the thickest, richest dark chocolate. These biscuits are infamous - in fact it is said that John Lennon of The Beatles once refused to be paid in cash, preferring Chocolate Olivers instead!
Talking heads not always a bad thing, providing they were actual participants in the subject’s life. What I don’t like is when some modern “artist” that had no involvement with the artist’s life comments in the history or tries to explain why the subject was great. I don’t need Justin Timberlake (or worse, Justin Bieber!) to tell me why John Lennon was great, and how he influenced them to be “great”!
Yes I agree, if they are close to the topic then they can give a great insight. I shouldn't have really generalised. Absolutely no Justin's should be involved. :-)
Hi Folks, Alan G Parker here! (Director of 'Borrowed Time') while the above is indeed interesting it gets more wrong than right regarding our movie, we are due to open May/June 2025 first in cinema, that will be worldwide not just in the USA! We are not a cheaply made talking heads fest, the budget for the film was almost $3 million. We have a great deal of archive, a good percentage of which is rare or previously unseen. Rest assured the star of this movie is very present... I'm a six times EMMY nominated film Director, so you're in good hands....

Wise words, John, wise words
@@alanlinfield8207 Interesting, thanks for that.
I always thought that too. I think it's the way he speaks - still I suppose we mustn't judge a book by its cover
Yes he definitely had the Lennon's backs and was quite involved with Sean as he was growing up
Beatley My Friend, great video, Borrowed Time will be fantastic, it will be interesting to know what they know, My Friend another document but for me it means a lot , John Forever , Thank You My Friend, take care, be safe , how you feeling, you look great, bless you, Steve
Thanks Steve, glad you enjoyed the video
I think talking heads are fine if they were actually there and can give context or perspective. I don’t like it when they prop up some “expert” or comedian to comment on events when they weren’t there or if it’s more than obvious that we’re more of a fan than they are. I’m still going to watch it and see.
Yes I agree, if they are close to the topic then they can give a great insight. I shouldn't have really generalised
Yes good point Dennis. I think this one will be very pro-john
Jeez Tone! I hope they are paying you double time and half, with all this promotion you are doing for Apple and The Lennon Estate. With all these different products. As far as documentary's on John, for me it would take a hell of a lot to beat the 2010 "LennoNYC". This for me, was the epitome of all Lennon documentaries.Hope you and yours are keeping well mate.
I guess we'll have to wait and see mate. Im hopeful this will be really good
@@beatleytonesbeatleschannel Hope so too! By the way ...can't sleep?

So much we didn't ask for and yet so little we do ask for... must be what it's like being married to Heather!
Im not sure directors make films based on fans nuances
Sounds interesting, Tone, but I kind of avoid documentaries, books, articles, etc., about John's final years, because even after all these years, the ending hurts too much. I'd rather just listen to John's music and read his own words in his own write.
Totally get that mate
We have a music video streaming service in Canada, called Stingray. And they show a lot of these "talking heads" documentaries. And while what they're talking about is interesting, the documentary itself usually isn't. I feel this way about the documentary included with the latest Jimi Hendrix box set. So, I'm not too hopeful about this upcoming John Lennon documentary.
Let's wait and see James
Bit like you on the content....but it will tell a story for the younger generations
2030 Double Fantasy deluxe. with Street of Dreams........?
Talking heads, good group
For a while, yes
You’re welcome. All those names i read out were all around at the time but i know what you mean
Me, I think I'll just fly past this one. I mean if it were on a channel that I had on the TV that I didn't have to pay for maybe I'd watch it. Otherwise whatever.
well we don't know what channel it will be on yet so maybe you already have it
Alan G. Parker made a brilliant dvd about The Beatles. "50 Years Ago"
A brilliant film with loads of content.
@@grahampratchett8207 ok thanks
I spoke to Graham, but no filmed interview ever took place, Bob Harris was able to cover everything that Graham had said....
@@alanparker3755 Thanks for the info update Alan. Best of luck with this project
This is good to know Alan, but I dont think I said this was a cheaply made movie or that it wasnt going to get a worldwide release
