    How funny, I removed my tm40 yesterday and went back to stock. I could never get the idle dialed on the tm40 among other things.

      I have adjusted mine, adjusted more, disassembled, rebuilt and adjusted more and mine still won't idle properly either. Piece of crap as far as i am concerned.

    • @jeremyjohnson2852
      @jeremyjohnson2852 4 года назад +1

      I have the same issue. idle is bit unstable, a bit harder to start sometimes. That said, it definitely woke the bike up, in particular it fixed the lag i was getting on the stock carb when cracking it wide open abruptly. That lag with the stock carb probably could have been remedied though idk. Oh well, i got it for a bargain and it runs well enough that I've kept it on but it is a lot more finicky

    Over 100,000 dirt miles on my XR650R and I never had an issue with the stock carburetor. Whether I am at my home (7,000 feet) or at 13,000 feet on Singletrack to my parents place in TN (whatever low elevation that is. In all those miles I have done 1 top end, bike is still going and no plans to sell it as it just runs.

      out of curiosity.. how rigid are the valve intervals? i know the manual calls for every 800km or something but i was thinking of a 650r for an adventure bike just not sure how long you can stretch the valve checks. on my past bikes the valves move a lot in the first 5-6k and then tend to stay rigid-ish.

    • @RedEmpire36
      @RedEmpire36 4 года назад

      @@0xsergy they move more than modern bikes that is for sure. I check them every other oil change because it literally takes less than 15 minutes and that's with tank removal. It's important to do them semi often as if they start constantly needing attention, especially intakes, its time for a valve job

    I didn't realize how bad the hesitation was on my 650r until I got a '19 crf450x. With the fuel injection, it is like having a perfectly jetted bike at all times. Plus changing the programs on the Vortex ECU changes the power output from top-end to torque with a twist of a screwdriver.

  • @katoom12000
    @katoom12000 4 года назад +1

    Late to the party but just saw the vid. Bought a new TM-40 off eBay 3 years ago that was "jetted" for the 650R.
    Bolted it on a stock engine along with a pipe and it has run great each season. Never have touched the jetting. Crisper initial throttle response but unsure about all out performance compared to stock carb since I added the pipe at the same time. Disclaimer: I have had the float needle stick once in a while. There's just too many variables to have one absolute answer for all cases other than we're fortunate to have XR650r's. What a bike.

    Johnny is right once you get your stock carb set up correctly it runs flawlessly and no flame out.
    I finally got mine 💯 dial perfect now. It starts first kick every time hot and a few primer kicks to start it cold. Super easy to start and the carb pulls to the moon

  • @richardfld
    @richardfld 4 года назад +1

    My stock carb NEVER ran right. Was jetted according to the chart and everything working as it should. Just had an awful bog off idle and just was never snappy like it should have been.
    Stuck a TM40 on it and it starts great, always first or second kick and no hesitation as well as snappy off the throttle and pulls hard through the rev range.
    Worked great out of the box. Have done a bit of tinkering since then but tbh it was pretty much perfect from the moment I installed it!

  • @efromm72
    @efromm72 4 года назад +1

    Ya I never bought one of those carbs for my 02 650r. Always ran the stock carb with 68s and 3rd clip on the needle 172 main. Pro Circuit t4 full system with spark arrest er. 2200-5000 ft elevation. I do run the iridium plug. And Maxima hi test in my non ethanol 91 octane fuel. 8 0z to 5 gal of fuel. Bike runs really good. Even better on straight leaded 110! Also of importance I found out is the thermostat. It can stick open and the temp of the engine block fluctuates instead of being stable. Which makes it run poorly and inconsistent while you ride. I bought a new one at napa. I think it was the geo metro thermostat. Make sure you drill the hole in it like the stock one has for the bleed. Good channel been watching since the beginning. Keep it up!

    Funny considering that countless people have success with TM40 and 42. Equal amounts on FCR's. As of late a ton of people, including myself have went Lectron. Biggest problem IMO people have with stockers, they are trying to tune worn out 13-20yr old carbs.
    Lectron for the win! Zero hesitation, tons of power through entire range and best of all NO JETS to deal with.....ever.

    A little story from my teens, I had an Yamaha RS 100.
    Got that saved up for my 16th birthday working several summers over.
    Got it and off course uncorked it. Then got a tip of a 22mm carb that would transform my bike to a " beast" (lol).
    That did not happen at all. Installed the original carb and jetted it a bit more aggressive and the bike run so smooth afterwards.
    So, I kind of recognize myself with your experience with your 650 ;)

    On my xrr I have an old edelbrock carb with the 20e needle . It still rides good but the accelerator pump shot is weak and that’s is what you use to cold start it. The funny thing about the eldo carb is it does not flood if you drop the bike . And I have had it to over 12000 ft and never felt that it had a jetting problem . The eldo was down about 2hp on top vs the stock carb using the same dyno . I will have to hit up your store .

    I have been running a tm40 for about a year on a stock 650r. Niche cycle advised a 22.5 noxxle and I think a 145 jet. I also removed to remote choke. Things ran good until I put a FMF exhaust last week.. At the time i was running a 152.5 jet neddle in the center position The FMF was a huge improvement over stock but it started cutting out at higher rpm. After that I moved up to the next size jet that I had which was a 165 also moved the needle clip to the top notch, the bike has run alot faster and increased top speed by about 5-7 mph however around 7,000rpm it starts cutting out. still trying to fix the problem. I almost forgot to mention that using the spark plug gap made a big difference. I am using a Denso iridium IK24 with a .067 gap

    Great advice.. I've also heard the xr 400 stock carb is fine when tuned probably although a lot of people pushing the mikuni pumper for it as well. I'm still running stock and there is a hesitation off idle intermittently so I guess I need to keep playing with jets. Also l believe they make a lectron carb for the 650r which would be specific to that bike from lectron. Maybe an option worth looking into if you start doing a lot of elevation changing 👍

    @bermcannon, unrelated topic, but I recently watched the old video when you purchased and started to get the 650 put back together. At the end of the video, you guys were discussing the air filter. What did you end up doing to the airbox? I need to replace a factory filter because the bike has been sitting since it was purchased and the filter is just falling apart in a mush. The bike has 25 miles on it, and I don't want to start it for the first time and it just ingest all that foam filter material. Considering it hasn't been running in so long I am going through all the normal stuff oil, oil filter, new gas, clean the carb, clean, lube and check chain tension, and check the coolant. Any other suggestions on what to do so I don't grenade a brand new 2004 xr650r trying to get it started?

    Why go from a 42mm stock carb down to a puny 40mm ?
    The accelerator pump of the TM40 only adds a squirt of gas for a second, when you twist the throttle.
    At WOT, you've only got a 40mm hole instead of a 42+mm hole.
    Pumper carbs are NOT MAGIC....it's all about how it's jetted.
    Bigger is betterer for power.
    Try a Mikuni TM/HSR42 or HSR45 for an improvement.
    As far as not being able to make the bike idle .... it's just the incompetence of the tuner.
    I run an FCR40 on a 'puny' DRZ440SM . I have ordered a TM42 to try and go even faster.
    I have owned an XR650R.
    and would def get a 45 if I were to hot it up.

    Well i tuned my stock carb perfect ,or nothing wrong with it at all..i put a tm42 on and it ran ok when i made the proper adaptors and changed the linkage,execpt it bogged of idle.found out the spring wasn't strong enough on the pump and it came on way to late.so I added an auxiliary spring and fixed it.now it runs great.its stronger off the bottom when cracked fast no doubt about it.can pull a taller gear from real low that the well tuned stock can not.thats physics. Mid to top isn't much different.. Because it's intended for a Harley you have to make sure it has a custom pump jet that you can't get which is about half the size.i think about size 30 instead of 60 or 70.without that you'll never jet it.

    I was willing to buy the shirt, fully knowing it will probably go missing at our post offices 😉 😂 but how can i go about wiring you some cash, for you to send me those settings 🙏

  • @donaldolin4616
    @donaldolin4616 4 года назад +1

    Jetting it turns out is tricky even if you have experience. Frequently the factory jets on the lean side for cleaner exhaust. This has been going on for decades. Example......my then new 2003 Ktm 625 SXC ran and started well on top of Mt. Evans which is a 14 thousand foot el. Since I live at 8600 feet and only use the bike in my area I never changed the stock jetting although I did strip the carb to affirm what jets it came with. The dealer never touched the carb.

    I totally agree. I’ve never seen one with a TM40 run anywhere ne’er as good as my own bike with the standard carb. I tell my costumers all the time Daker and baja bikes ran stock carbs. I owned over 60 XR650Rs and the guys who tell people to buy them are on the phone telling me , they can’t make them work properly. I tell them the exactly same thing ,you and Jonny Campbell said. Honda new what they where doing. A well jetted genuine Honda carb is the answer.

    Listening to people talk about jetting on the Internet and what carb is best is a pie in the sky! What runs good for someone could be considered doo doo for another. I never listen to ANYONE that says the stock carbs from Honda are junk. Honda has 100s of supersmart engineers that know EXACTLY how to make their bikes run precise.

    Really enjoyed all your videos. Much respect from Seattle. But this one you couldn’t have been more wrong. That pumper carb has been a game changer for me. Bike runs flawlessly at all RPM’s. Probably due to a lack of air or something. Idk man.

    So, you're an expert but do not know how to do your own jetting? Do you know that most of the older hot shoes did not use the 40mm, they used an oval bored TM 38mm to maintain velocity? Man, some expert
