I have adjusted mine, adjusted more, disassembled, rebuilt and adjusted more and mine still won't idle properly either. Piece of crap as far as i am concerned.
I have the same issue. idle is bit unstable, a bit harder to start sometimes. That said, it definitely woke the bike up, in particular it fixed the lag i was getting on the stock carb when cracking it wide open abruptly. That lag with the stock carb probably could have been remedied though idk. Oh well, i got it for a bargain and it runs well enough that I've kept it on but it is a lot more finicky
Over 100,000 dirt miles on my XR650R and I never had an issue with the stock carburetor. Whether I am at my home (7,000 feet) or at 13,000 feet on Singletrack to my parents place in TN (whatever low elevation that is. In all those miles I have done 1 top end, bike is still going and no plans to sell it as it just runs.
out of curiosity.. how rigid are the valve intervals? i know the manual calls for every 800km or something but i was thinking of a 650r for an adventure bike just not sure how long you can stretch the valve checks. on my past bikes the valves move a lot in the first 5-6k and then tend to stay rigid-ish.
@@0xsergy they move more than modern bikes that is for sure. I check them every other oil change because it literally takes less than 15 minutes and that's with tank removal. It's important to do them semi often as if they start constantly needing attention, especially intakes, its time for a valve job
I didn't realize how bad the hesitation was on my 650r until I got a '19 crf450x. With the fuel injection, it is like having a perfectly jetted bike at all times. Plus changing the programs on the Vortex ECU changes the power output from top-end to torque with a twist of a screwdriver.
Late to the party but just saw the vid. Bought a new TM-40 off eBay 3 years ago that was "jetted" for the 650R. Bolted it on a stock engine along with a pipe and it has run great each season. Never have touched the jetting. Crisper initial throttle response but unsure about all out performance compared to stock carb since I added the pipe at the same time. Disclaimer: I have had the float needle stick once in a while. There's just too many variables to have one absolute answer for all cases other than we're fortunate to have XR650r's. What a bike.
Johnny is right once you get your stock carb set up correctly it runs flawlessly and no flame out. I finally got mine 💯 dial perfect now. It starts first kick every time hot and a few primer kicks to start it cold. Super easy to start and the carb pulls to the moon
My stock carb NEVER ran right. Was jetted according to the chart and everything working as it should. Just had an awful bog off idle and just was never snappy like it should have been. Stuck a TM40 on it and it starts great, always first or second kick and no hesitation as well as snappy off the throttle and pulls hard through the rev range. Worked great out of the box. Have done a bit of tinkering since then but tbh it was pretty much perfect from the moment I installed it!
Ya I never bought one of those carbs for my 02 650r. Always ran the stock carb with 68s and 3rd clip on the needle 172 main. Pro Circuit t4 full system with spark arrest er. 2200-5000 ft elevation. I do run the iridium plug. And Maxima hi test in my non ethanol 91 octane fuel. 8 0z to 5 gal of fuel. Bike runs really good. Even better on straight leaded 110! Also of importance I found out is the thermostat. It can stick open and the temp of the engine block fluctuates instead of being stable. Which makes it run poorly and inconsistent while you ride. I bought a new one at napa. I think it was the geo metro thermostat. Make sure you drill the hole in it like the stock one has for the bleed. Good channel been watching since the beginning. Keep it up!
The TM40 I got from XR's only ran my 650r perfectly without any tuning. Other than a full White Brothers super trap style exhaust and the carb, my bike is stock. Maybe I just got lucky?
Love your videos! My 2004 XR650R Port & polish, Hot cam stage 2, Full T4 exhaust, XR"S rev box. Bike has always run awesome with the stock carburetor and with a 68s 0-3,000 feet 65s 3000-7,000 feet and 62s 7,000+. On the other hand my 2004 XR650L stock carburetor sucked, I just got a TM40 pumper and so far it is night & day. No more G out or low end cutting out.
I do have a tm40 on my bike , its true that its to big for the xr and its going to take some time to dail in but its running great after messing for 3 months with it.
Funny considering that countless people have success with TM40 and 42. Equal amounts on FCR's. As of late a ton of people, including myself have went Lectron. Biggest problem IMO people have with stockers, they are trying to tune worn out 13-20yr old carbs. Lectron for the win! Zero hesitation, tons of power through entire range and best of all NO JETS to deal with.....ever.
Could not get Lectron to tune properly which is absolutely insane for an $800 carb on a $3k bike. Idle hangs/too high when hot at stop lights. Stock carb slight bog and less mpg but waaaaayyy better so far.
Thanks for the advice! A little story from my teens, I had an Yamaha RS 100. Got that saved up for my 16th birthday working several summers over. Got it and off course uncorked it. Then got a tip of a 22mm carb that would transform my bike to a " beast" (lol). That did not happen at all. Installed the original carb and jetted it a bit more aggressive and the bike run so smooth afterwards. So, I kind of recognize myself with your experience with your 650 ;)
On my xrr I have an old edelbrock carb with the 20e needle . It still rides good but the accelerator pump shot is weak and that’s is what you use to cold start it. The funny thing about the eldo carb is it does not flood if you drop the bike . And I have had it to over 12000 ft and never felt that it had a jetting problem . The eldo was down about 2hp on top vs the stock carb using the same dyno . I will have to hit up your store .
Funny I bought a TM40 for my xr650r and it works FLAWLESS honestly bike feels like it's fuel injected the stock carb on mine was JUNK from sitting with bad fuel in it
The stock carb is the best carb for on and off road riding,I’m 67 and have been racing all my life believe me the stock carb is the best for the 650l just take your time on getting it jetted and do not drill out your slide it’s made to perform the way it is you don’t need it to open faster
Thank you for this video. It helped me make up my mind. I will just rebuild my stock carburetor. Im not into messing so much with some "bolt on" mod :-) Keep up the good work.
I have an 06 that is immaculate and i haven't uncorked it. Im torn between staying completely original or going restomode. I do hate me headlight for sure.
Bermcannon, my 650 is in the shop. For years the carb has been leaking fuel out of the overflow tube. A honda dealer was able to get it to a slow drip and where it's at know there telling me a carb rebuild or new carb will fix it. I'll be ordering the rebuild kit from xrs only tommorow, can you send me the Johhny Campbell specs. That way I can give it to the mechanics. Thanks!
I have been running a tm40 for about a year on a stock 650r. Niche cycle advised a 22.5 noxxle and I think a 145 jet. I also removed to remote choke. Things ran good until I put a FMF exhaust last week.. At the time i was running a 152.5 jet neddle in the center position The FMF was a huge improvement over stock but it started cutting out at higher rpm. After that I moved up to the next size jet that I had which was a 165 also moved the needle clip to the top notch, the bike has run alot faster and increased top speed by about 5-7 mph however around 7,000rpm it starts cutting out. still trying to fix the problem. I almost forgot to mention that using the spark plug gap made a big difference. I am using a Denso iridium IK24 with a .067 gap
Harley carb. I ordered one, a kit, from xr only a few years back, but for the xr650l. It was $400. I could never get it to run well, put stock CV carb back on. I may try the fcr. Tm40 sucks.
Great advice.. I've also heard the xr 400 stock carb is fine when tuned probably although a lot of people pushing the mikuni pumper for it as well. I'm still running stock and there is a hesitation off idle intermittently so I guess I need to keep playing with jets. Also l believe they make a lectron carb for the 650r which would be specific to that bike from lectron. Maybe an option worth looking into if you start doing a lot of elevation changing 👍
joe Doyle I also dealt with that hesitation. And another thing I want everybody to know is the carbs seem to run really good up and down the street but when I took it to Baja on like a 3-4 day trip that is where it had certain issues
How about the xr650l i have mine dialed from xrs only wiith thier exhaust uncorked but they just jetted the cv carb for me.I was told until you change the compression and the cam no need to change the carb. The bike always starts hot or cold no hesitation or flame out it just seems like it should have more power....and yes i have tried many different gearing combos.I think this is as good as it gets without motor work.
@bermcannon, unrelated topic, but I recently watched the old video when you purchased and started to get the 650 put back together. At the end of the video, you guys were discussing the air filter. What did you end up doing to the airbox? I need to replace a factory filter because the bike has been sitting since it was purchased and the filter is just falling apart in a mush. The bike has 25 miles on it, and I don't want to start it for the first time and it just ingest all that foam filter material. Considering it hasn't been running in so long I am going through all the normal stuff oil, oil filter, new gas, clean the carb, clean, lube and check chain tension, and check the coolant. Any other suggestions on what to do so I don't grenade a brand new 2004 xr650r trying to get it started?
Exactly it's too expensive for what it is... Btw you should put in an FCR 41 Mx and see here in Europe the FCR is the mod that makes the biggest difference
Why go from a 42mm stock carb down to a puny 40mm ? The accelerator pump of the TM40 only adds a squirt of gas for a second, when you twist the throttle. At WOT, you've only got a 40mm hole instead of a 42+mm hole. Pumper carbs are NOT MAGIC....it's all about how it's jetted. Bigger is betterer for power. Try a Mikuni TM/HSR42 or HSR45 for an improvement. As far as not being able to make the bike idle .... it's just the incompetence of the tuner. I run an FCR40 on a 'puny' DRZ440SM . I have ordered a TM42 to try and go even faster. I have owned an XR650R. and would def get a 45 if I were to hot it up.
maybe you could share what you did to your tm40?... i can idle for days but i get flame outs... and if no flame outs it feels weak trying to wheelie 3-5 gear... my brother have the very same bike 650r but with stock carb and it boggs a bit but feels waaay stronger then my tm50
How can it be “too big” when a DRZ400 comes stock with with a 39mm pumper, and the DRZ462 stroker big bore runs a 41MX? I don’t know why it didn’t work for you, but it’s not because it’s too big for a 650.
Well i tuned my stock carb perfect ,or nothing wrong with it at all..i put a tm42 on and it ran ok when i made the proper adaptors and changed the linkage, execpt it bogged of idle.found out the spring wasn't strong enough on the pump and it came on way to late.so I added an auxiliary spring and fixed it.now it runs great.its stronger off the bottom when cracked fast no doubt about it.can pull a taller gear from real low that the well tuned stock can not.thats physics. Mid to top isn't much different.. Because it's intended for a Harley you have to make sure it has a custom pump jet that you can't get which is about half the size.i think about size 30 instead of 60 or 70.without that you'll never jet it.
I just removed the TM40 from my XR650R, I installed a stock carburetor and now I can kick start the XR on the first or second shot. With TM40 I some times used 20-30 minutes to start the engine. The TM40 was simply useless on my XR650R. Who wants to use 30 minutes on kick-starting a bike......?????
where did you get the TM40 from? surely the supplier can help you sort it, not rocket science... must be a fellow BRP rider in Cali with a TM40 that can help sort it out for you (look up Thumper Talk forum)....i can only encourage you to persevere, not unless you want to have the bike historically correct? my 2 x xr650r’s had both stock carbs replaced with TM40s and don’t display any of the nusence’s you’ve experienced....my SM version now has a TM42 which again has increased the performance.... If Johnny was to hop on a 650R with a sorted Mikuni he would most likely want to do Baja all over again....
I have moved on. I had 3 different professionals work on getting it dialed including sintax who shared his same settings with me. It was ok but not as good as johnnys stock tuned carb. I believe the guys who are having success and are stoked for them but im moving on. 🤙🏻
Bermcannon do you still have the stock Keihin with tbe choke flap intact, remove it in total and the Keihin will pull harder...video of how to is on youtube by Rum Soaked Studios (dude was mechanic on the Oz Safari 650rs back in the day)
Hi Mark, i have tried purchasing a t-shirt, in order to get those settings 😃 but they don't ship to South Africa.I then considered just dropped you that cash in your go-fundme, but that too has closed. I was willing to buy the shirt, fully knowing it will probably go missing at our post offices 😉 😂 but how can i go about wiring you some cash, for you to send me those settings 🙏
Jetting it turns out is tricky even if you have experience. Frequently the factory jets on the lean side for cleaner exhaust. This has been going on for decades. Example......my then new 2003 Ktm 625 SXC ran and started well on top of Mt. Evans which is a 14 thousand foot el. Since I live at 8600 feet and only use the bike in my area I never changed the stock jetting although I did strip the carb to affirm what jets it came with. The dealer never touched the carb.
I totally agree. I’ve never seen one with a TM40 run anywhere ne’er as good as my own bike with the standard carb. I tell my costumers all the time Daker and baja bikes ran stock carbs. I owned over 60 XR650Rs and the guys who tell people to buy them are on the phone telling me , they can’t make them work properly. I tell them the exactly same thing ,you and Jonny Campbell said. Honda new what they where doing. A well jetted genuine Honda carb is the answer.
Listening to people talk about jetting on the Internet and what carb is best is a pie in the sky! What runs good for someone could be considered doo doo for another. I never listen to ANYONE that says the stock carbs from Honda are junk. Honda has 100s of supersmart engineers that know EXACTLY how to make their bikes run precise.
Really enjoyed all your videos. Much respect from Seattle. But this one you couldn’t have been more wrong. That pumper carb has been a game changer for me. Bike runs flawlessly at all RPM’s. Probably due to a lack of air or something. Idk man.
So, you're an expert but do not know how to do your own jetting? Do you know that most of the older hot shoes did not use the 40mm, they used an oval bored TM 38mm to maintain velocity? Man, some expert
36? no way..... i now run a Mikuni TM42 (had a 40) it pulls even harder through the midrange....mikunis are an incredible upgrade when you buy them from a dealer in the know ie. Mikuni Oz
@@H3avyHaul3r would you say that you got 61 hp on both tm40 and tm42.... but the power is just is at other places in the RPM.... i dont want to buy a tm42 for more mid to top range when i got a low range bike.
@@torso99 i’d recommend sticking with the tm40 if its running without issues…by the time you reshape the tank to fit the tm42 to clear the throttle cable bracket, then play with jets to suit your bike…
@@torso99 try getting a #30 accelerator pump nozzle from MikuniOz in Australia…it sprays less of a squirt from the accelerator pump…its not a Mikuni oem part, they have them specially made for them…i can’t link you the part as youtube deletes my reply with a link…
How funny, I removed my tm40 yesterday and went back to stock. I could never get the idle dialed on the tm40 among other things.

How can it be “too big” when a DRZ400 comes stock with with a 39mm pumper, and the DRZ462 stroker big bore runs a 41MX?
I don’t know why it didn’t work for you, but it’s not because it’s too big for a 650.
That grait man i was ready to chainge my stock carb
How can I get Jonny Campbell spec for the stock carb? Mine took a crap this weekend with some bad gas in it.
Thats a great lookin bike there!
Where do I order the shirt?
Hey man, where can I order from?
👌🏻 well said russell
I’m glad I found this vid. I’ve got my first dominator being shipped to me now. Just bought the dominator tee shirt too. How do I request the specs?
Send me your email receipt to sender@bermcannon.com
Bermcannon what size tank are you running and what sort of milage do expect to get with these jetting specs?
I just removed the TM40 from my XR650R, I installed a stock carburetor and now I can kick start the XR on the first or second shot. With TM40 I some times used 20-30 minutes to start the engine. The TM40 was simply useless on my XR650R. Who wants to use 30 minutes on kick-starting a bike......?????
Bad tuning.
Hello mate, hope you are well. Do you still have the deal going on the stock carb specs from Johnny Campbell?
Yes
Ok great, where can I order?
Ordering now
@@bermcannonk Ordered mate , thank you.
@@johannpretorius3864 hey man, where did you order from? Thanks
where did you get the TM40 from? surely the supplier can help you sort it, not rocket science...
must be a fellow BRP rider in Cali with a TM40 that can help sort it out for you (look up Thumper Talk forum)....i can only encourage you to persevere, not unless you want to have the bike historically correct?
my 2 x xr650r’s had both stock carbs replaced with TM40s and don’t display any of the nusence’s you’ve experienced....my SM version now has a TM42 which again has increased the performance....
Bermcannon do you still have the stock Keihin with tbe choke flap intact, remove it in total and the Keihin will pull harder...video of how to is on youtube by Rum Soaked Studios (dude was mechanic on the Oz Safari 650rs back in the day)
is this a dominator nx650 or xr...
Hi could I get the specified tune for the 650 dominator please 🙏
Did you get it?
Hi.Where should I order my shirt?

@@bermcannonk I need a shirt and specs ;)
Don't take this the wrong way there are a lot smarter people out there than precision concepts trust and believe in that from a motorcycle guru
What rear rack is that if i may ask?

I had the same problem.
Yup. We are not the only ones
@@bermcannonk just bought a cool tshirt from your store. Can you email me Jhonys carb specs. Thanks

Hi Mark, i have tried purchasing a t-shirt, in order to get those settings 😃 but they don't ship to South Africa.I then considered just dropped you that cash in your go-fundme, but that too has closed.
I was willing to buy the shirt, fully knowing it will probably go missing at our post offices 😉 😂 but how can i go about wiring you some cash, for you to send me those settings 🙏

what is this rear rack?
I want jonnys xr600r carb jets
Jetting it turns out is tricky even if you have experience. Frequently the factory jets on the lean side for cleaner exhaust. This has been going on for decades. Example......my then new 2003 Ktm 625 SXC ran and started well on top of Mt. Evans which is a 14 thousand foot el. Since I live at 8600 feet and only use the bike in my area I never changed the stock jetting although I did strip the carb to affirm what jets it came with. The dealer never touched the carb.
Gimme those specs man
My stock r has a little low end lag .
Boom 🤯
Then you take a 13-20yr old worn stocker into account, worn slides, worn bodies etc etc
The XR650R's carburetor is good but the XR650L's SUCKS! Everyone makes mistakes and they are still making them today:)
Hungry valley ?
I hate it there!!!! Hate it.
Do you notice any fast throttle lag with the current setup? My XR bogs when I accelerate fast... Example: ruclips.net/video/abbjTDzNZ9E/видео.html
I got one for sale if anyone wants it. Carb
A xr650r? Or a tm40
Fcr mx is much better option ..most everyone is going that way now. Myself included
If it weren't for having to mold the tank to make a FCR fit i may have but went Lectron instead.
lucky!
JC tuned Dom. Gtfo of here. Lol. Friggin' jealous man.
Just too big a bore, a 36 would be better.
36? no way..... i now run a Mikuni TM42 (had a 40) it pulls even harder through the midrange....mikunis are an incredible upgrade when you buy them from a dealer in the know ie.
@@H3avyHaul3r cant get the tm40 to quit bogging unfortunatly.. i was actualy thinking about tm 36 or 38 becouse of low range torq
@@torso99 try getting a #30 accelerator pump nozzle from MikuniOz in Australia…it sprays less of a squirt from the accelerator pump…its not a Mikuni oem part, they have them specially made for them…i can’t link you the part as youtube deletes my reply with a link…
