3 Simple Ways to Spot a Fake Morgan Silver Dollar

  • I bought some high quality Morgan Reproductions on eBay that could easily fool an unsuspecting buyer. The last thing I want is for someone to get ripped off, so here are a few things you can do to check your coins after (or preferably before) you buy them...
    These are by no means a fool-proof, but here are 3 simple things you can do to check your Morgan Silver Dollars to ensure that they are genuine silver:
    1. Weight Test
    2. Orientation Test
    3. Magnet Test

    +RAMKING61 when referring to precious metal we are talking about a Troy ounce which is 31.1grams; not the standard ounce which is 28 Grams

    I have a 1889 cc morgan silver dollar. After watching some videos I did the test and it stays stuck to the magnet. I assume it's fake

      Jeff Goodman unless it’s such bad condition that you can barley see the date it should not be far off from 26.7 grams

    @ai3n10 You got it. Thanks for the comment. If I were you I would weigh it...if you have another Morgan or Peace Dollar you know is real, the scale will read the exact same weight as the 1889 you are concerned about.
    If you don't have a scale, a very easy way to find out would be to bring it to a local coin store and ask what they would give you for it. They don't want to buy a fake, so they would use their "expert eye" and let you know if it's a fake. Don't let on that you think it's a fake!

    If you balance a real Morgan on the pad of your index finger and tap lightly downward on the rim, it will have a very high, sharp ring to it. Fakes have a very dull sound. You can also compare by dropping a real Morgan (or Peace) dollar a few inches onto a very hard surface. The Morgans have a high ring. Fakes have a dull sound.you. Any fakes I have seen are also quite a bit lighter.

    @oldtimefreedom Yes, great point. Like I said, it really surprised me (and frankly scared me) that there were no COPY markings on these...I mean, doesn't that make them counterfeits? How many of these are floating around on eBay listed as geniunes? Not that I ever would, but I could EASILY list one of these and rip someone out of $30.
    Thank you for the support. All my best to you!

    DENSITY will also be the key: density = mass/volume. Measure the thickness because chinese fake zinc will be thicker.
    The formula to calculate the volume of a cylinder is:
    v = h * pi * r squared
    where
    v = volume
    h = height (in you case the coin thickness)
    r = radius (one-half the diameter)
    Density of silver: allmeasures(.)com/Formulae/static/formulae/density/29(.)htm

    The new Morgans were 26.73 grams when minted. What is the lightest acceptable weight for a worn one? I have one that is 26.1 g. Is that much loss possible from wear?

    one way of noticing a fake are the detils around the edge of the coin .
    Detils are those little ridges around the rim on the coin . If they are incomplete then this coin is probably counterfeit .
    Another quick way is to look at the fields , this is the flat areas on the coin , it is the blank surface of the coin . Now if this area is pebblely or is not smooth , the coin is counterfeit
    The use of flipping the coin over doesn't necessarily mean it's a counterfeit . there are some real coins that this happened to and it can be in any position around the clock .

    Hi, I have a bunch of Spanish coins from the 1860's that were my Grandfathers and I had ideas of shining them cause they are a bit tarnished. Is this advisable? I've heard from people that it could devalue the con. Is this true?

    Loved the video. An honest coindealer will not shortchange you. I gave an ike dollar to pay for some coins. Ikes are normally only worth a dollar. But he gave it back saying it was silver and to keep it. still not sure if its silver because its a date range on the bottom of 1776-1976, but this coin dealer I trust.

    I never knew these were out there, although, I have heard of some Chinese junk going around.
    Never felt comfortable with the known circulation of fakes and then getting stuck with any of them while knowing better.
    So, I only buy from solid reputable dealers. It's like getting good medicine from the pharmacist or going out in the hood for it, the choice is yours.

Are every dollar spot on in weight or will they be a few grain off? if one is worn will it be a bit lighter? i may need to invest in a better scale my dime range from 2.4 to 2.6 in weight. any input or links greatly appreciated.

    It would have been nice if you had a scale to show the weight difference between real and fake. So many people making videos of "fake silver" without showing proof. Just weigh the coins and you wont get ripped off. BTW, I buy my silver dollars online, from Apmex as well as JM Bullion and ebay and have never gotten a fake silver dollar.

    I bought the 'Fisch' Silver Dollar tool, as I buy a large amount of Silver Dollars. You cannot fool this tool if it is not made of 90% silver. It is pricey, but pays for itself. To date I have only bought one fake, a 1924 Peace Dollar which failed both the Fisch Detector and digital scale test. You could just tell it was fake the minute you picked it up. Ebay dealer promptly refunded me, and I kept checking his listings to make sure he relist.

    @Petros7373 ok like my father told me when i first accuried it is that you can tell very easy a fake morgan from a real one (he had 250 with a fake one in the middle) thats how come he says he can tell...also i a lil less worried that its a morgan and more worried that the Mintmark was added

  • @afsoldr

    A simple test is the "ring" test; if you drop a silver coin on a hard surface it has a very distinct ring; all others, not the same.

    i think the biggest test of all is that any Morgan dollar coin that is magnetic is NOT REAL , whether the weight is the correct one or not...or if the coin is not marked as fake, if it is magnetic it is FAKE!!!, i have a question...if a coin is not marked as reproduction then would it be a counterfeited one and therefore against the law? how can anybody sell them on e-bay?

    Buy yourself a set of scales, and weigh every coin as soon as you get home. Only a few dealers are dishonest, but most are not. If you ever get a fake coin, call their shop ASAP. They will honor your receipt, it's a very serious offence selling counterfeit coins. Once you deal in silver for a few years, you'll know by the weight, lustre and the sound. It's your money, not theirs. Always keep all receipts in a safe fire box. Good luck, and may you find a rare coin one day soon :)

      That weight is about right for the coin you have. The silver eagle is an altogether different coin than the Morgan Dollar and each weigh differently.

  • @TrilobiteTerror

    @JP5466 While it is always safer to buy from reputable sources, ebay is still a good source for coins. You just have to make sure you know what you are looking for and what you are looking at. Almost all fake silver coins including these can still be determined fake just by looking at them. They are not perfect and will have some type of difference in lettering or something. Also if a coin you bought is a fake, you should be able to get a refund from the seller or ebay.

    @ai3n10 weigh them first. morgan dollar weighs 26.7 grams the fake one's usually weighs 23 grams or less. second measure their diameter, third do a ping test. my advice is that if you want a morgan dollar buy those with cartwheel effect. fake morgan's don't have any cartwheel effect.

    I am experienced numismatist. First, where did you buy the coin? That is your best way of finding out if it is more than likely a fake or not. If you are buying from Gainesville Coins, I can guarantee you that they are using Sigma Six error margins and you have a .00001% chance of picking up a fake. That would be 1 in a billion chance. In fact you would have had a better chance of winning that big lottery worth over 500 million a few months ago than picking up a fake if you buy from trusted Ds.

    most fake coins may look worn .The best method is to buy a acid test equipment learn to use it fairly cheap if your gonna buy silver or gold alot for 35 bucks at the most get all 4 testers and a stoned an get a file if your going to buy alot of silver coins get a cheap hand weight scale and a magnet a10x power loupe magnifying glass total investment around !00 bucks saving are priceless you wil recover the cost in a few buys of silver.

    Out of curiosity I wanted to see if I could find fake morgans on ebay being sold as fakes, and I did! The seller is "szdepot88", from Hong Kong, here is how they are titled, "Replica Morgan Coin US 1879 Dollar Gr8 For Magic Tricks".
    Pictures show the coin does not have any replica stamp on it, front or back. But hey, what is the problem? It is just for magic tricks!

  • @RAMKING61

    Also, you have to remember a lot of fakes are made of real silver. That is what the Chinese do. They will make a Silver Morgan of valuable dates and then just cast it out of real silver. That is why you MUST always buy from a trusted dealer like GainesvilleCoins, BullionDirect, FideliTrade, SilverSaver, Tulving, Perth Mint, GoldMoney, etc etc. If you aren't collecting just for silver content then you must buy from one of these sources I named above. You can trust their distribution channels.

    Oh, and the price for a single fake is $3.96. No wonder these are arriving in mass quantities, I am sure there are plenty of people buying these in bulk here in the US, in hopes they will be able to sell them on the street for 30 bucks a pop. This makes me angry. That said, these particular fakes do not look convincing. What is really scary are the fakes made from 90% silver, especially when they have been stamped on the original die the US mint sold years ago!

    Petros, I would be afraid to put a video on RUclips saying that you bought copy coins that did not have the word "copy" on them. These government guys might come and get us...I mean you...for owning illegal copy coins that do not contain the word "copy" even if bought without knowledge that they would not have the word on them. They are pretty good for the price!!

      If he stamps the word COPY into them,then he should be ok. By federal law all replica coins are supposed to have COPY on them. It falls under the Hobby Protection Act.

      Rescue294 The coins I bought on Ebay claimed the word "Copy" would be on the replica coin in the description, with a picture of one that had "Copy" on them.

      If possible stamp them. That way you don't get in any trouble. Thanks for posting.
