I also sharpen on my belt grinder. I run my belt in reverse and use the area of the belt just behind the top platon wheel. Doing it there allowes me to see the bur form along the edge. Im also one of those guys who progresses through the belts 220, 400, 600, 800 and on kitchen knives 1200 and 2000. Lastly I hand strop on a stropping board I made. I use to use a leather stropping belt on the belt grinder but I found it didn't get as sharp. I still use the strop on the grinder when I make an axe or tomahawk, 220, 400, then strop.
For the novice, highlighting the edge with a magic marker will give you a good indication if you have the correct angle. Then you can see where material is being taken off. Great video.
Yes very good tip!
Great tutorial! extra tip: I have the same VFD... you can get a reverse switch super cheap online and run it backwards so you can sharpen with the edge up. Makes it super easy to see the burr.
The Canadian Nexus grinder has an adjustable 2 axis tracking wheel mechanism which not only allows you to adjust wheels vertical axis but also its horizontal pitch. Until I got this adjusting the tracking wheel alone was not successful for consistently running a belt backwards.
@@griffiths-handmade-knives Brodbeck Ironworks 2x72s also have a dual tracking setup, to enable good reverse tracking. Works great.
I do it the same way but i dont pull away from the grinder for the tip. I follow the belly of the blade.
Thank you for sharing. Really appreciate this .. hava great day
Sweet.. do U use some Sort of backing on the Platen? Thx
How does the heat generation of the 240 ceramic compare to trizact, and do they cut faster than trizact?
I use 120, 400, and then leather but I also have three grinders set up in a row which cuts set up time out. Do you find the edge to be too aggressive or have too much bite for some customers when you only use the 240?
I’ll try this method. It would cut down on the varieties of belts I need on hand for sharpening.
Another question. So if its grabbing a little, do you re-burr it or use the strop belt and finish it some more?
Just back to strop!
As soon as you get a burr on one side, are you suppose to stop the 240 grit? Also, i havent watched all the video, but, do you have a way to show the steps on a 2x42 that is just 1 speed??? Thats what i have and i cannot get a knife to sharpen properly. It could be other stuff but i have been very frustrated with this and have not tried to make one for almost 2 years, plus moving to florida from kalamazoo. Thanks matt.
It’s tough on a super fast single speed grinder! Highly recommend a vfd
If a vfd is not an option, should i use a higher grid belt? If so, what grit do you recommend me to try? Thanks@@gentrycustomknives8008
I suck at sharpening a knife on a belt grinder. They always seem sharper before I sharpen them LOL
lol practice!
That's cheaper than a Tormeck setup, and got similar results
Not quite as precise as tormek but much faster
You can make a Setup Like a Tomek For the grinder
