It was considered the highest form of worship and the central point of interest in the service. The early Christians considered it much more than merely symbolic as the fundamentalists do today. That is a fact of history.

The official name for this celebration is Communion, or the Lord’s Supper. Jesus said, “do this in remembrance of Me”. Jesus was preparing His apostles & His disciples for His sacrificial death on the cross, His burial, and His resurrection from the dead And He is presently seated at the right hand of His Heavenly Father, interceding for us who believe that He is the crucified & risen JesusWho died once, for all time, for all who will believe in Him, and He will soon appear in the clouds to receive His own, and we’ll be with Him eternally. Glory to the Name of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ🙏🙏🙏

Propaganda. I’d give it a D+ at best. Extreme prejudice against Catholicism warping many of his historical judgments (most of which sound secondhand). “Byzantine” refers to the Eastern Roman Christian Empire seated in Constantinople from the 4th to the 15th c.. Pope Gregory was hardly the first bishop of Rome to recognize his own universal jurisdiction. The pre-500 Church was very Catholic. Ignatius Loyola (Jesuits founder) was a 16th c. figure, not pre-500! Patrick was from the 5th c., not the medieval period. The term “Dark Ages” was a deliberate disparaging of the Middle Ages invented by scholars of the Renaissance and is no longer used or credited by serious historians. The crusades were far from mere mobs. Wycliffe did not want laymen reading the Bible in English. Scholasticism was a thoroughly medieval and Catholic affair rejected by the leading early Protestant Reformers. Group baptisms did not occur. Etc etc. This is just a terrible way of telling history aimed at using distorted history to score ideological points. This man hardly knows what he’s talking about and should not be taken seriously.

I don’t think the point about Diocletian era destruction of pastor, church and Bible is correct. Before the Catholic Church, there was no Bible, no pastor (they were called priests at first), no ‘church’ building to destroy. They knew they were the spiritual church and not a physical place. Of course, a pastor would weave himself into history. 🤔

@@redit5332 Do a little reading. Did early Christian believe in using the Bible >ONLY< when they only choose the books to be in the Bible in 382 AD (Constantine died in 337 AD) at the Council of Rome? Until they were declared at that Council to be uninspired many were treating the Gospel of Thomas and Gospel of Philip as sources of religious truths. Why isn't the Gospel of Thomas in your Bible if some had treated as inspired? The Bible doesn't really tell us which books should be in Bible, one of the biggest reasons being that >humansONLY< get religious truths from the Bible or else there would be no Bible (and I guess there couldn't be no Christian until 382 AD nor for the decades that it took for much of the New Testament books to be written down). Books were expensive until maybe the 1800s. Also, even though the 66 books that make up the majority of Protestant Bibles were chosen in 382 AD it is weird that the Holy Spirit then allowed at that same Council the error of having 7 extra books added (ie 73 books had been chosen) to the Bible that most Protestants don't accept.

As a student with a lot of interest in the early church and familiarity with lots of second and third century texts, about fourteen minutes in I concluded this as deeply disappointing - shockingly little use of sources and quotes, and several claims that without quotes sound like mischaracterisations. Here is a man with a passing awareness of the subject, but very little obvious passion about its material, or else a lack of conscious awareness of its primary sources.

@prairie mark I'm not going to pretend a cultic incantation with a wafer can literally become the body of Christ and have Jesus die every Sunday.
I want no part of the fish heads and their pagan religion.
When the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 3:4, squabble they didn't go to a head of a "centralized church". They went to Paul and he rebuked them in that no one is more important than others.
Instead of following Paul or Apollos, or anyone else for that matter they need to follow God. People may argue "church history" all day long but the true matter is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
I am saved through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
      John 1
      King James Version
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
It is unwise to chastise someone who is preaching the Word of God.
I'm going to believe the Bible and not act haughty by boasting whatever "intelect" I have in a comment section just to make myself feel better.

You skipped the year 538 when emperor Justinian gave the throne in eastern Rome to the Pope( Little horn in Daniel 7) by a decreet and then he moved his throne to constanstinople , now lets see the prophecy of that little horn, He ruled from 538 till 1798 when Napoleon took the civil power from the pope pius six= 1260 years, time+times + half of time equals the same and 42 month the same( Catholic Church is the little horn in Daniel 7 , is the first beast in Revelation 13 and the great harlot where seats the man of sin the pope ,, What is the mark of the little horn, first beast, great harlot responsible of changing the Law of GOD?? Sunday observance is the mark of the beast" When will it come alive? When the United State Congress legislate Sunday Law, then all nations will follow the example. why sunday law? Rome always wanted to recover to be a powerfull system among the Nations , The Pope is a politician, And the second beast exercise all the authority of the first beast," United State and sadly the protestants are the ones pushing for a sunday Law( The image of the beast)( also the false prophet) So finally whats the big idea about the Sunday Law? The world will be polarized in two groups, The majority accepted the Sunday deal and the minority kept the 4rth commandment 7th Day Sabbath of the Lord thy GOD, Dont forget, we will be dragged to court house, Sunday is now a civil law and religious observance, We will suffer persecution from religious extremist and pagan secular people" Did not happen to Jesus and the apostles ?? same thing will happen now.

I dont think that the Crusides were accuratelly portrayed here. The whole presentation has lost credibility at that point. The comment about spices and Islamic art and the dark ages made look the whole Europe like a backwards land. Christian Hagia Sofia was built starting in 532, what a nice piece of Christian Art!. The city I am from.has a huge cathedral from the 13th Century, full of art and an amazing piece of engineering. 1st Crusaide started in 1095 in response to 400+ years of Islamic raids to protect Europe. Without Crusaides the whole Eurpoe might be Islamic today. Ask what Turks did to those they were attacking: kidnapping girls for their harems and boys for their Jannisaries armies, sending them back against their relatives as projectiles. I understand that not everything went well, but Crusides started as just wars to end all this injustice. I remember my parents saying that during the second world war Russain Armies were raping "freed" territories. Our family knew someone who lost her mind that way. Ironically Germans who fought " unjust " war seemed to be much more disciplined and would never be allowed to rape. You can not, based on the behaviour of some soldiers, completely reverse who was good and who was bad! I really liked the beginning of the lecture and I wish the portions about the crusides the dark ages and the Islamic art were handled less schematically. I can not help but to think that nothing that is originated by the Catholic Church can be positive. (I am a Bible reading and believing conservative Christian, not a Catholic myself)

David Smith as a fellow commenter, i beg to differ David, you are in a godless cult lorded-over by a string of self-glorifying popes, bishops & cardinals, who all promoted evolution & now aliens from other planets, they even dare to spread the lie that the bible is not necessarily true without any specifics. (so they can state what isn't true as they go along with their schemes) They never even let its followers read the scripture for the first 11 - 1200 years under threat of death, get out of that cult & back to the word of God in scripture

Every single person here listening to Dr Barrett seaks Truth and are from different denominations, what binds us all is our love for Jesus our Saviour but nooooo in true style you come along and want to be the defender of an institution and tradition, wake up!!!!

prairie mark Since when was "the language of the people" Latin? not since ancient Rome it wasn't. . Scripture was exclusively Latin & the common man could neither speak or read it, only the catholic clergy could. The council of Hippo in 393 A.D. sanctioned 27 books to become the new testament & they became the official scripture of the Catholic church, purely in Latin, and it was certainly forbidden to be translated into any native language for 1000 years, it was forbidden to be translated & read by the common man. Under "bloody Mary" of England, many were burnt at the stake for having any translation of the catholic church's scripture & reading it to their own families. Catholic power ensured this. Tindale was burnt at the stake where mahogany was insisted upon by the clergy because it burns slower than other woods, yet < 80 years later Tindale would have been safe as Henry 8'th caused the split from Catholic Church & bibles were then translated freely in U.K. at least, not in Italy tho, the common man doesn't speak or read latin & translations were forbidden under threat of a death sentence until ....err (i'll have to google it, but much later) When it 'became' ok to translate, strictly only the St' Jerome's could be used, those good old catholic popes eh? the Papal stranglehold on scripture took 1000 years to stop
