My first fast food meal when I moved to San Diego in 1963 was at Jack-In-The-Box. At the age of four, I was fascinated by the talking clown. Couldn't stop laughing and was next to impossible to talk to the poor person working there to give our order. We finally got the pick up window and they asked us "Should you even be driving?". The whole way home cracking up. We're still friends to this day and always talk about that when we hang out.

Some of my earliest memories in the mid-70s with my parents was at Jack In The Box. My mother who is in her 80's now still enjoys her Jack-in-the-Box tacos to this day.
I fondly remember Jack in the Box from the 70s when there were a handful in MD. The babysitter used to take us there for a treat. Loved the apple pies.
OMFG the Jack in the Box we used to go to was on Security Blvd in Baltimore County. They had like one person working in there during the late night hours. We gave that guy a workout! We all went in there to use the bathroom (drunk as hell of course) and I pissed in a trash can and kicked it over!! They fkd up my brother's order one time and he put a beer bottle through the drive-up menu! They left shortly after, 1978-79 IIRC. The site of that sorry-ass JITB is now an office building converted to a church/daycare center. BTW the guy who used to be there looked a lot like "Rerun"of the TV show "What's Happening".

We always called it Junk In The Box. When the food poisoning took place, they were all but thrown out of Florida, the only one I knew of still in existence is in Winter Haven on Hwy 27. But I don't know if it's still there now or not.
Your endings have gotten lots better. Worth noting that Jack in the Box had to pay out millions to settle the E.coli lawsuits brought by sickened customers, four people died, and some of the survivors still have chronic health issues because of the contaminated burgers.
Yeah. There were a couple massive payouts in the Seattle area. Shortly after the outbreak, Jack in the Box lost tons of customers. My nephew used to go there and say, heck, it's the safest place to eat right now.
I went with my parents to Jack in the Box in the 60’s in San Diego. I remember it was the same building type as pictured in the video. I have been going ever since. The Jack Taco is a favorite and I have enjoyed them now for over 50 years, scary.....
Not exactly the original which was kind of like using French dressing to make thousand island. The Jumbo Jack had its own sauce that was different than the “Secret Sauce” called simply Jumbo sauce.
We had JitB in Michigan until I was, like, 5 years old when they pulled out. I didn't eat there again until I moved to Las Vegas in 2007. The 2 tacos were STILL 99 cents then. Running on very little money when I moved there, you couldn't beat that little meal with a stick, I'll tell you that!

Lol, but it was the way the fried tortilla came out that makes it tasty. Not the crunch tortilla of others but a softer shell with a crunchy edge where you really tasted the corn.
I love Jack in the Box, a guy from my church was the CEO for a time, my late wife was even in one of their training videos many years ago. Now I live in Wisconsin and we don't have them! Every time I travel South or West, I seek out a Jack in the box for a great treat. Thank you once again Recollection Road for bringing back some wonderful memories.
I lived in New Mexico for a while, and although there were some JITB in the state, there weren't any near me. Every time I drove back to California, I would stop at the first JITB I came to in AZ (somewhere in the Miami-Globe-Claypool area), have a meal or a snack, and phone my parents to let them know I was roughly 1/2-way home.
Oh how I remember going to JITB with by sister on Friday nights before high school football or basketball games. It was our thing. It was that or pizza from a family-owned place in town. Life was so simple and fun back then.

I have not been to Jack-in-the-box in years - used to really enjoy their excellent milkshakes - I need to go get one - sure hope they are still as good.
I go every week here in Cali. I really miss the apple turnovers, though. They have good snacks, but the apple turnovers were the Best. The tacos, chicken sandwiches, chicken rice bowls, and Sourdough Jacks are so yummy and the egg rolls are amazing. Better than Any I've had at Chinese restaurants, honestly
Used to have a few on Long Island and it was a popular spot to hit up for a few Taco's after a night out drinking. They disappeared in the early 90's .Miss them! and miss those Taco's
When I was in college and back home on weekends, my buddy from high school and I would drive the back roads drinking a few beers. We would often go to the Jack In The Box in Reisterstown, Md. and scarf down two or three tacos. They weren't much to look at, but wow did they taste fabulous. I miss them not being available any more.
why wasnt there any mention of the fact that FOODMAKER INC. owned jack in the box? back in 74 i worked as the night manager of a jack in the box down in the south side of houston texas. FOODMAKER INC. also was owners of purina pet foods at the same time. in fact the taco bags had the ralston purina checkerboard square logo on the back at the time....really made you wonder just what went into that taco meat doesnt it? one thing i really miss is the old jack burrito's they brought out in the 70s, those were great.

In N Out Burger preceded Jack and the box with their drive thru burger stand when Harry and Esther Snyder decided to open a drive-thru fast food restaurant in 1948, in Baldwin Park California, this concept of marketing had not been tried before. To make there Restaurant work the Snyders set up a two way speaker system allowing customers to place their orders.
Jack was where we hung out in the late 70's in SoCal. Had a friend that worked at one & she would slip me free food. Loved Frings since I didn't have to choose. I worked at a Taco Bell across from a Jack in the 80's and we would swap food. Still go get tacos occasionally.
I remember going to Jack in The Box as a child in the '70s. My mom loved their Jumbo Jack and their tacos. My Dad loved the fish burger. I'd always order a cheeseburger, French fries and a coke. And, back then they'd give free balloons to children. I loved it!
I love jack in the box! Most diverse fast food menu in the industry. The two tacos, sourdough Jack and the egg rolls are remarkable. I love Jack in the box tacos more than Taco bells.

I've been going to Jack in the Box for over 40 years now, and I LOVE some of their newer innovations like the Buttery Jack Bacon and Swiss - but somewhere along the line, they changed the recipe of their original Onion Rings, which used to be coated with a DELICIOUS crispy egg batter. Now it's covered in a "healthier" less tasty bready crust. Ah, for the good ol' greasy days!!!
After a morning of surfing with my friend Paul Fishbein and his brothers David and Joel, under the watchful eye of their mother Joan, we drove in her white Rambler Ambassador station wagon straight to Jack in the The Box for hamburgers, fries, onion rings, and milk shakes. The location? Pacific Coast Highway, Huntington Beach, California, also known as Surf City USA. It was the summer of 1963 and we listened to Jan and Dean on The Big 11-10, KRLA Pasadena, singing “Two girls for every boy.” I was 12. Life was good. I was stoked! Many years later I moonlighted as a mobile DJ and played in a couple of garage bands in the Sacramento area in the 1990s. After the gigs I stopped on the way home at Jack in the Box in Fair Oaks next to Citrus Heights and ordered two tacos. I thought they were delicious. The location is still open until 2 a.m.

When I was a kid growing up in Los Angeles in the 1960’s and 1970’s, we almost never ate fast food because my parents didn’t like it and discouraged us from patronizing fast food restaurants. I did have tennis lessons for a brief period, and the instructor would take me home afterwards, along with a couple other students. One day he said he was going to stop at Jack in the Box and buy us lunch, and I thought he was joking because my dad would often joke about it. He wasn’t. We really did go through the JITB drive through for lunch. I must have been about 8 years old, and it was my first time visiting a JITB. I’m still not a regular customer.
I grew up in Lakewood in the 1950s and ‘60s. I don’t recall my parents ever eating fast food. That said, it didn’t stop me from going to Jack in the Box in Belmont Shore, Huntington Beach, etc. with friends or on my own.
@@photonotavailable7936 It was similar for me (though I was in Long Beach). We rarely had fast food growing up, but once I had a driver's license it was a different story. (I had never even heard of the term "fast food" or even considered it as a concept different from other restaurants, until my senior year in high school when I got a job at a fried chicken place (not KFC).)
@@mariateresamondragon5850 In Lakewood, near the intersection of Paramount and Del Amo Boulevards as I recall, we had a fried chicken place called Chicken Delight, KFC's competitor. Their fries were the best I've ever tasted. McDonald's paled in comparison. Advertising jingle was Don't Cook Tonight Call Chicken Delight. And they delivered. Traveled to Long Beach many, manny times. It was as though Lakewood and Long Beach were one and the same. Those were the days my friend. We thought they'd never end.
I remember when my dad and mom would take us to Jack-in-the- Box for lunch. I remember the food tasted good. By 1990 or so something has changed with the taste of the food. Especially with the hamburgers and tacos.

Still love the tacos, glad they are the same as always. Used to love going to JITB in Chicago before they left town, thankfully, they are all over the place here in the SW. Their spicy chicken sandwich is good, too.

@@marcusgomez3307 , You're right. It's considered one of the best fast food salads. Low in calories (about 260). But high in sodium. But for me when I go to fast food joints (which isn't often) I want a big fat juicy sodium and calorie packed double cheeseburger. No pickles. No tomatoes.
My dad used to muse about how we kids would be so mesmirized by the clown head sign on one of ours in San Jose, CA even if we weren't eating from it! We did every so often and it was always great! There used to be the "Bonus Burger" too, even though I don't remember what it was about! But I loved the name so much that every Easter I would dye an egg orange and call it "Bonus Burger"! Hahaha!
The Jack in the Box building I went to in the 80's still stands (right next to what use to be a Ponderosa), though it hasn't been a Jack in the Box for at least 25 years.

I remember seeing Jack in the Box for the first time in the early 70's in the Chicago area. When my family moved to the Kansas City area in 1978, there were Jack in the Box restaurants in several locations, but they all left around 1981. They returned to the KC area around 2009. I have only been to a Jack in the Box once or twice. I find them overall to be okay but nothing special.
JITB did change the Jumbo Jack in the 80s, coinciding with the demise of the original clown. They switched from Secret Sauce to mayo, something that kept me away from them until they changed it back. The clown free years were not good ones IMHO, I didn't return until they got Jack back. I grew up in San Diego and recognized many of those photos.
"What happened to Jacks commercials 😕, I missed Jacks voice ,clear, shape of his mouth always got the point across with all, hahaha 😅, greatly missed. "

Two tacos and the big messy burgers were my favorite from jack in the box ,I have a picture of one of my daughters the day she graduated from head start in the story ave center the Bronx it just brings back so many great memories.
There are numerous Jacks still going in Texas. My mom would drive our station wagon back in the 60s to the Jack's on Long Point Rd. in Houston. There was a large revolving clown head on the sign and we kids pretended we would die if the clown head looked at us so we would duck whenever the head spun in our direction. My sister would scream. My mom must have thought we were nuts. The Breakfast Jack is the best thing to eat while on the road. It is a slice of ham and a fried egg with cheddar cheese in between two buns. The cheese made for the perfect adhesive so the rest never slipped through the back of the sandwich while driving. I could enjoy the Breakfast Jack and a drink while keeping my eyes on the road and one hand on the steering wheel to the amazement of any passengers. I personally believe the Jack CEO ads are the best running ad campaign ever devised. It's brand specific (you could never mistake them for another brand), humorous and product-focused (they always pitched the food rather than belaboring the joke). The Jack CEO also seems like a cool guy to work for. Never was a fan of the tacos, though.
"You want tacos?" "Maybe." "You want DEEP FRIED tacos?" "Hell yeah!" Sad when they pulled out of my area. A friend travels and buys a crate of frozen tacos and we fry 'em up when he gets back. Yum.
more than 35 years ago there was a Jack in the Box across the street from Menlo Park, that was the only one I have ever seen in NJ and as far as I know there has never been another one since then, after it closed down it turned into a Mini McDonald's (a place to just order but no place to sit sort of like the older Kentucky Fried Chickens), the McDonald's closed down over 20 years ago and moved to the other side of the mall (outside) in a regular sized store

I always stop by JITB in the morning on my way to work. Love their food. I now know of the history. Thanks a bunch!
Back during high school in the late 80's the book covers from my school had a Jack in the Box coupon, for $1.50 you got a Jumbo Jack, fries and a drink my buddy and I would go around stealing other students book covers just for the coupon it was a great deal for high school students with little money.

We always called it Junk In The Box. When the food poisoning took place, they were all but thrown out of Florida, the only one I knew of still in existence is in Winter Haven on Hwy 27. But I don't know if it's still there now or not.
Some wild store designs. I'd love to see them return!
Your endings have gotten lots better. Worth noting that Jack in the Box had to pay out millions to settle the E.coli lawsuits brought by sickened customers, four people died, and some of the survivors still have chronic health issues because of the contaminated burgers.
That reputation would keep me away FOREVER

Yeah. There were a couple massive payouts in the Seattle area. Shortly after the outbreak, Jack in the Box lost tons of customers. My nephew used to go there and say, heck, it's the safest place to eat right now.
Jack in the Box used to have a burger called "the Bonus Jack" and it had their "Secret Sauce" on it. I used to love that.

Yesss just like California
