This was very insightful and the most professional looking, high budget shoot interview I've seen. Hulk Hogan stands out because he's blonde and wore lots of yellow. Yellow stands out, it gets everyone's eye including police cars when they see a yellow car. It also helps to be 6'8" and back from when wrestling was more mainstream.
You also have to consider the overseas market as well. I live in Scotland and was a huuuuuge mark for Hogan when I was 7. Like you say, if you wanted his merch: figures, T-shirts etc, you had to order them from a magazine or some such. Fast forward 7 or 8 years and you could walk into a local supermarket, our equivelant of Wall Mart, called ASDA, and you could buy Austing T's and figures and other assorted shit. Hogan was huge in a much tougher market than Austin, by a mile.
Who says Hogan didn't put anyone over? His two biggest matches besides vs. Andre were vs. The Ultimate Warrior and The Rock, both of which he was cleanly pinned. That man did more for professional wrestling than anyone has ever done or ever will do. NO. QUESTIONS. ASKED.
Hulk wasn't as over as he makes out-people booed him in his WWF days, too. Jake Roberts feud with him failed for this reason-people were cheering for Jake, and not Hulk. Cena gets booed, Austin didn't, unless he was heel-and even then the fans loved him. I was never a Hulk, Austin, or Cena fan, so I couldn't give a shit who was more over, but in terms of merchanise sales, and fan reaction, Austin was by far the biggest star.
Hogan DID have the internet. Not at first, but he was one of WCW's top guys during Austin's run in WWE, and is still in the business today. You can believe whatever excuses Hulk Hogan wants to make, but alongside Ric Flair he's one of the biggest bullshitters in the business.
@wrestlingbookerX It's not just the yellow,it's the red as well. McMahon knew the history of PT Barnum using red & yellow on his posters to promote events back in the day. Something about those colors together catches people. How about Ronald McDonald? What colors does he wear? Red & yellow. Shell? Same thing. So,if you have a band and want to promote your show or you're putting on a Knitting Championship, use red & yellow on your poster. The track record for its success goes back over a century.
No, he had all those years, and the years following the internet boom. Austin only had the latter, pretty much. And we're not talking about which of the two is the most recognizable.
some of them make millions too, even though you do make a lot of money, most guys are never heard of after they retire, so you know they can't make too much money after they retire, maybe a little from merchandise, like hulk said in an interview I watched of him earlier, he took 2 yrs off and was still making 2 million a year while he was off, but he said after all the cars, houses, his kids cars and expenses, he was spending $10 million a year, and bringing in 2 million a year, add that up
Different Era of wrestling. Besides you're wrong... Hogan is a 12 time world champion including the WCW. That's the same number of world titles for Cena.
@eslubin Absolutely. The whole ROH style as it was prior to 2008 did more damage to wrestling than anything Hogan, Bischoff, WCW, Vinnie mac or the fuckin' WWE ever did. No one is exempt from blame on this one im afraid. Good to see not every fan who uses the net has forgotten what made wrestling important in the first place.
Not true about the "merchandise sales" if you take any historical context of the 1980's compared to the 90's/2000's. In the 1980's when Hogan sold tens of thousands of T-shirts, he did it WITHOUT internet or any mass-media devices. In Hogan's era, in order to buy merchandise, you either attended the event in person, or you ordered it out of a Magazine. In Austin's era, you could sit in your chair and order merchandise. If Hogan was in Austin's era of on-line buying, he'd be champ.
Sorry bro i understand its not easie your good man.not so much as a wrestler its about a person.as big as you are its about heart and soul.and i give you alot of credit hang in thier
you are very right my friend, It is only complete idiots who compare the two and shout about Austin selling more, its just as you say you can not compare! One era to another, the Internet revolutionised the sales industry and merchandise. Had the net been around like it is now back in the 80s Hogan would probably have sold treble what he has done today or even more than treble perhaps. Only thickos with no logic shout about Austin outselling etc. Logical thinking is so rare these days.
Heh. Had TNA signed Austin, not Hogan, or Rock, and not Hogan, I'm pretty sure more people would be watching. But no, let's live in a dream world where Hulk Hogan is the biggest star ever and played bass for Metallica. I'm sure he's got his facts right XD
oh yeah, and I'm really not being a dick or trying to argue, I was just mentioning what I heard him say in that interview, so no harm intended, oh yeah, and they don't get sick days unless they have to have surgery, or vacation days, could you imagine, some of those guys work 300+days/year, some more than that, some do raw and smackdown, the house shows, and all the ppv's, its an insane schedule, it's fake, but it is entertainment like Vince said, after he did say it, everyone thought oh no!
Gotta Say Rock vs Hogan was the last match that ever gave me Goosebumps = after that wrestlemaina - wrestling DIED! nothing at all is good - I get the network and go straight to the vault ---
but saying it was fake and only entertainment was very smart, cause now, the viewers watching at home and at the shows are getting younger an younger, Vince is a smart businessmen, why try to put it off as real, and only the father or male of a household come to see a show, rather than say, hey, this is entertainment, no bodies really getting killed or hurt(intentionally), and have the whole family come instead so instead of selling 1 ticket and 1 shirt, your sellin 4-5 tickets, shirts, food etc
@joshpk84 Nobody will ever be as over as Hogan was (I don't care what they say about Austin), what I am saying is that for today's youth Cena is that guy for them like Hogan was for us.
@jasondh22 WHO WANTS TO SEE A HUGE GUY LIKE THAT USE WRIST LOCKS AND STUFF? I wanna see him pound someone and slam people not be a technical wrestler....He didn't NEED to....
I love that argument. Because it's not like Hogan was in the business before, during, and after the internet, is it? It's not like he's STILL in the business, making money, is it? That's another bullshit Hogan excuse spouted by his fans. On top of what Hogan made from merchandise sales before the internet, he made more from the nWo, when he had the internet sales, too. The fact is, Austin is a far bigger star.
well dats y wwe has steph the head writer cuz she been in wwe for a long time but i wont listen to the writters like that cuz i will tell vince dnt give me a script jus tell me to win or loose and then i got the best things to say
Sigh... He was the leader of the nWo; you think he didn't get paid for the money they brought in? Or do you think all that money went to Scott Norton? Hulk is lucky his fans are so willing to accept his outright lies.
yea lol like no other wrestler has ever held anyone down huh? let me ask u, do u like triple h, shawn michaels, ric flair or stone cold steve austin? thyve all held ppl down or tried to hold ppl down. and in austins case he didnt get his way and walked out.
Internet wrestling fans: 1.Cant wait to trash the man who was the biggest draw in history bar none, who carried the business on his back for two decades, 2.Always quick to defend a child murderer.
Hogan contradicts himself in the first 4 minuets. He says he was "saved" when he was 14, but then claims as an adult he didn't know boozing and cheating was bad. Not only that, but the first book is a load of fiction.
Agreed. Some fans are such naive idiots... "Hey i really like the undertaker! But booo Hogan keept other people down" Its a buisness... The only wrestlers youll find who havent used their influence to further their own career, are the ones who dont have any influence.
"Writers have never been to the big game". Well, people who write wwe's stuff like Pat Patterson, Arn Anderson or Michael Hayes have been to the "big game" and know how to draw money in the business. So Hogan is either a hypocrite, or completely ignorant of what's he saying.
sad thing is that he isnt wrong - do you remember the Rock doing backflips or Austin coming off the top all the time? fuck guys like Hogan, Rock or Austin just had to look at the crowd to get 10 times the reaction some indy guy gets breaking his body in 2........and then not even pinning the guy! I mean. c'mon, if your not gonna pretend its real - why should the fans?!
That is good that Hulk Hogan can balance the two.God bless Hulk Hogan's soul.
What a great interviewer. Seriously. Perfectly placed questions
Never really been a big Hogan fan, but I admire everything he's done for the business...
That is actually a very good point I never thought of, either way top sales or not Hogan is the greatest wrestler of all time, and my favorite.
This was very insightful and the most professional looking, high budget shoot interview I've seen.

i wonder what hogan liked more...being the heel or the good guy
HULK HOGAN BROTHER!!

Legend
That's Hogan problem,,,he can't stop acting like Hogan, ,,even with him saying he is not acting like him all the time,he does...crazy
Because you've been around Terry right? On a regular basis to know.
Hogan DID have the internet. Not at first, but he was one of WCW's top guys during Austin's run in WWE, and is still in the business today. You can believe whatever excuses Hulk Hogan wants to make, but alongside Ric Flair he's one of the biggest bullshitters in the business.

cat loves food, yea yea yea

I must've missed them.

Hey he wrote the book...
I wish the camera would leave his damn hands alone.
The Rock.
Having seen "No Holds Barred" and "The Marine," I am inclined to disagree!
Hogan cannot go an interview without talking about WrestleMania 18.
Only in WWF...
What about it?
@panikface John Cena is now what Hulk Hogan was in the 80's. One is no better then the other.
you are very right my friend, It is only complete idiots who compare the two and shout about Austin selling more, its just as you say you can not compare! Reality Television destroys families.

I'm with you on hogan being better than cena, but man, Hogan made far more shittier movies and tv shows than Cena lol
No, that would be your mom.
Internet wrestling fans:
1.Cant wait to trash the man who was the biggest draw in history bar none, who carried the business on his back for two decades,

Sorry dude but you wrote it cause you needed the money

Cena is some marine who wears jean shorts and plays a role on Fred. Which one is bullshit again?
No remorse from Hogan for the poor paralysed boy. Just for the lost money.
pay for ur own retirement plan, u stingy bastards - anyone remember when dino bravo was getting the cheers vs hulk?
@6steveo9 i'd rather see less. it's more realistic. the flipping and flying is the bs stuff
sad thing is that he isnt wrong - do you remember the Rock doing backflips or Austin coming off the top all the time?

Does everyone see what mshefik1's comment was?Everyone go their profile and tell them THEY SUCK!!!!!!!!!
John Cena has been World Champion, twice as many times as Hulk Hogan... Am i the only one who calls BULLS**T on this!?
#nWo
Back when Hogan was on top and beating Andre I never thought he'd become such a tragic and pathetic figure. He aged 10 years in the last 2.
Stress will do that to you
