This is a great documentary. I can't believe there are no comments in 11 years. This is the only place where I've seen an actual video of Northern Dancer's sire Nearctic. Thank you for posting.

Why not go back to Phalaris (1913)?
99.9% of all thoroughbreds on the planet can trace their sire line back to that single horse, born only 110 years ago.
The Godolphin line is extinct and there are only two Byerley Turk sires left on the planet. Your admiration is misplaced and short sighted...

@@paulthesurfer7470 This is a video about Northern Dancer, and the farm who bred and raced him and stood him st stud. My comment is not short sighted. Phalaris is no doubt a very influential sire, but he wasn't the subject of this video, which was originally done many years ago when Nearctic and Northern Dancer were still living and stood st stud in North America. Phalaris was long gone. Your comment is off topic.

@@suzanneyoung8011 The entire premise that Northern Dancer was some kind of "freak" is probably why nobody has commented. More important, in terms of bloodlines, was his dam, Natalma, and her sister Cosmah, dam of Halo. From there you get the preponderance of Northern Dancer/ Mr Prospector in 99.9% of racehorses today.
It was that double Natalmah in the pedigree of Danehill that changed thoroughbred breeding forever....

@@paulthesurfer7470 I agree that there is a lot of Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector blood in Thoroughbreds today, but to say it is 99.99% is a stretch. Northern Dancer is very prevalent certainly in European bloodlines, but not nearly as much for Mr. Prospector. I agree that Natalma and Cosmah were very influential broodmares, but I've never really liked that close inbreeding in Danehill's pedigree, but it has certainly seemed to work for him and his progeny. I always liked Halo. Thank goodness his legacy lives on through the many sons and daughters Sunday Silence left behind in Japan, and that bloodline is still successful several generations on from Sunday Silence.

@@suzanneyoung8011 ...which is why ND & Mr. P keep getting crossed with Halo lines. No Godolphin sires are in existence today. Two Byerley Turk sires, Bulleton (Aust) & Pearl Secret (Ire), are all that remain. ALL OTHERS ARE DIRECT DESCENDANTS OF PHALARIS. As an example, the Bold Ruler line only exists today as a result of Bold Reasoning (1968) who left only 3 crops (Seattle Slew one of them). Maybe Bold Reasoning's dam had something to do with it (hint)...
