I think something super simple that I've always adored is that Zuko always respected Iroh even as a young boy. When everyone called his uncle a failure for losing Ba Sing Se, Zuko defended him. His love for his uncle was not something that was instilled after he was exiled, but is something deeply rooted in him since he was a young boy.

There is no filler in Avatar.
“The Tails Of Ba-sing-Se” is a single episode with more character development than the whole of many lesser written shows.
I mean there's Ember Island Players. And yet for a filler it does so much more than your average filler episode.
The Great Divide
HanbeiTakenakaSama its not a filler..you are seeing a fire nation propaganda film
@@omarismaeel7838 It still achieves what a type of filler episodes do, recap the events so that the audience could keep up with the overarching plot. However Ember Island Players do it in an unorthodox but amusing way, put it in the perspective of a nation that's been at war with the rest of the world for a hundred years, which makes it way more engaging than your average filler episode.
You just don't understand what filler means...
There are a few filler episodes in Avatar. Filler is anything that doesn't move the plot or story forward. Anything that contains flashbacks or takes place in a different time and place than the current story... soooo..yeah... there is quite a bit of filler sprinkled throughout The Last Airbender, buddy ol pal...
The Iroh scene is so impactful because of how all the following reasons.
1.) The writing on the picture translates to:
"To General Iroh:
See you after we win the war.
Your loyal son, Lu Ten"
2.) The whole story of Iroh losing his son on its own is tragic. Iroh is literally sitting at the spot where his Son died outside of the city walls. Not only that but he was the General in charge of the siege and so he feels even more responsible.
3.) The face in the picture is actually what Mako (Iroh's voice actor) looked like when he was young.
4.) The voice actor knew this would be his last performance so it made the crying through the singing oh so much more real.
Iroh is all about fatherhood in this episodes. He helps a child, boy, and man as if it was his son or zuko it’s so precious

I hate to be that one guy, but I think Avatar gets so much exposure because it’s western.
Now I’m going to talk about anime.
There aren’t much anime I think are as good as Avatar, but I truly believe the one anime that surpasses Avatar is Fullmetal Alchemist : Brotherhood and I would appreciate it if you gave it a watch.
It’s on Netflix and it has a great English Dub.

Just because she can't see doesn't mean she doesn't care how others see her.
That’s what I thought at first, thinking about her as a girl forced into things like make up and doing her hair. But then I thought about how alone she must have been. Earth bending competitively probably didn’t let her meet many other girls nor was being isolated from everyone to the point others didn’t know she existed. Either way Toph doesn’t fit the mold blind or not. Those girls hurt her by bringing that feeling of isolation back. I could be wrong it’s been a long time since I watched the episode.
Galaxion Art She wasn’t forced she was persuaded to. And she ended up liking it. But then people made fun of her and it kinda upset her but she said one of the good things about being blind is that she doesn’t have to worry about her appearance and she doesn’t need anyone’s approval. Then Katara told her she was pretty and Toph could sense she wasn’t lying so she was happy. It’s a great story ngl

Too bad reversing video, changing audio speed, cropping image, all that bullshit, none of it foes anything to avoid copyright claims. All it does is piss people off and make them not want to watch the content.
I say this mostly to complain about all those videos you see out on RUclips, not for this channel specifically. Just going on about the 20ish year old kids who fuck up video clips to "avoid copyright" and write that long winded bullshit in descriptions saying "not mine, I don't own it, no copyright intended, this is legal under fair use" etc etc even though none of that shit matters at all and 'fair use' doesn't make uploading even 1 second of footage legal. Fair Use is a legal defense to be used 'after' you're being sued for copyright infringement, your lawyer claims that whatever you did falls under Fair Use and as such should not be punishable. Then the Judge decides whether or not they want to let you go, or if they are going to charge you with the crime. This is something people, even little kids, REALLY need to understand. People really need to understand that Fair Use is not a law at all and it does not protect you from ANYTHING. All it is, is a way to possibly prevent you from being charged with the infringement after whoever has decided to take you to court for infringing upon their rights...
Ugh.. thank you for sticking through all that unnecessary and pointless babbling and rambling.. I hope that you learned something valuable through all of my bullshit...

Wrong. "The Tales of Ba Sing Se" shows viewers what a filler episode NEEDS to be. A filler episode only is successful when: A) expands the universe of the series. B) indulge into the characters and exposes more about them.

You probably already knew, just wanted to remind so you can cry even more
And the picture of "Iroh's son" is based off of the voice actor when he was younger.

Ya... I watched the episode again after learning this for the third time and I’ve been crying nonstop for an hour now
Why did I get choked up when you started talking about Iroh, the sonG DIDN'T EVEN PLAY, IT WAS JUST A MAN TALKING OVER THE SCENES AND I CAUGHT FEELS.
I’m literally tearing up just listening to you talk about Iroh’s story!
This show is... very good.
I feel like Toph's detachment from beauty is more simplified than what was described. It's mainly because she can't fucking see.
aaand the fact that she was pampered with dresses which made her feel just like a flower in her parent's garden. Her detachment can easily be seen as more ways she was rebelling against her parents
I will always love Toph's brutally honest character. The fact she's blind also means she's a better judge of character since she isn't influenced by outer appearances, thus making her the least biased person in the show.
Its not just detachment from beauty, but a stand against it imo. She wears an armor of dirt and displays that she is the greatest earthbender in the world. What you just see with your eyes doesnt have to matter and it doesnt to her...but it does. Somewhere deep inside she also wants to be pretty and be appreciated. I think that she is so fixated on the ideals of it should not matter that she has hard time accepting the part where it does. Maybe if the world was less obsessed with looks and cared more for whats really important, she might be able to give herself permission to want to look pretty too.
The only beauty she can see is with peoples actions. Actions are hard to fake and arnt skin deep.

I'm 23 and only watching this show for the first time (I'm up to the episode after the western air temple atm) and iroh quickly became my favourite character, and continues to assert himself in that place.
His wisdom and humour that rises so far above the fire nation and his genuine kindness for all he meets is just so heartwarming and it's been so amazing to see his influence on Zuko change him slowly over the show and seeing his actions in the last 2 episodes I watched made me feel so incredibly happy
Momo's story was pretty sad but Iroh's story is heartbreaking. I can't imagine what pain parents go through when they lose a child.
Love how a filler episode can be so loved, goes to show how great the writers are.
I feel like I'm the only person on the internet who thought this episode (and the following Appa's Lost Days) were largely a frustrating waste of time.
SouthpawZer0 Nah, lots of people feel that way. I don't mind Appa's Lost Days since it at least gives Appa some development but most of Tales (except for Iroh's part for the feels and Sokka's part for the humour) were pretty pointless.
@@JayAreAitch This episode came into being in part because of Mako's death, they had to halt production to find a new voice actor.
I agree
SouthpawZer0 That depends on what you want the show to do. Advance the main plot? That’s not what the show is about. It’s a show about character moment with a back burner conflict that only comes up when it needs to. It’s a very Eastern writing style. It’s the same reason people hate the way Aang beat Ozai.
No mention of Mako Iwamatsu? Imma just do it in the comments.

The reason Avatar as a series was so great was that it had actual depth and and dynamics to its characters. They weren't just archetypes. They seemed like real people. I think one of the best showcases of this (and my personal favorite episode) was Zuko Alone.
Arusiek90 Exactly! There needs to be complexity to stereotypes in order to justify them. Avatar did this perfectly, and that’s why I love this show.
My favorite episodes are Tales Of Ba Sing Se, Zuko Alone, and The Beach. Because of Leaves from the vine, and the ones with appa and momo. Zuko Alone because Zuko (one of my top five favorite characters) realizes how much he needs and loves Uncle Iroh. And The Beach because it’s just them being regular teenagers for once.
@Zilan Xiong thats alos why i love toph bc she could easily be a threat but she sided with team avatar
Zuko as a character grew even more to me while reading the comics on what happens after the "main story", so yeah, defo also like Zuko and Iroh the most tho
And to think. This is considered to be the show's only filler episode.
But it's a lot of people's favorite episode. And it's not hard to see why.
I wouldn't consider it a full filler episode as it does have some purpose
Wasn't the Great Divide filler?
I don’t think there’s any episodes of this show that are considered filler. All of them have some kind of thematic and characterization purpose. Fillers are annoying while the fillers in this show have meaning. Anime’s like fairy tail and naruto should take notes
@@bimboification I hear you, but I remember reading somewhere that even the shows writers didnt care much for the Great Divide. It didnt serve a purpose thematically or characteristically. At least from what I remember. I could be horribly wrong, though.
Kam Jones you are correct. It was universally disliked as an episode. That’s why in the last season where they watch the firebender propaganda play that recaps everything that happens they have a line about where they ask something like, “oh should we check out what that’s about? ...nah”
I remember weeping so much when Iroh was singing “Little Soldier Boy.” I wished I could kneel right beside him, putting my hand on his shoulder and sharing the pain that was in his heart. There’s not many shows that get me as emotional as that. It truly is a wonderful show.
"The tales of ba sing se" is also my favorite episode of the entire show.
I believe that the photo of Iroh’s son says something along the lines of ‘See you after the war general, your ever obedient son’
Rick Sanchez it says
I’ll see you after the war father!
Your ever loving son
That’s the rough translation
Y’all really tryna make a grown ass human being cry right now?
Cipher Megalomaniac sorry bro😰😭😭
Bramlovestogame I’m pretty sure the actual translation shows his son being much more distant and formal and not as personal and loving
Avatar is so timeless and beautiful.
Most of the main characters are crafted wonderfully and had great payoffs.
I remember this episode was amazing. I love these characters so much and can never fet enough of them.
Zuko is my fav character
I still remember when I was like nine and watched the series for the first time, I liked Iroh but sort of as a comic relief. In the tales from Ba Sing Se I thought the scene with the thief was hilarious but didn't really think or get emotional over the scene on the hill. Now a couple of years later I binge-watched the whole thing again and really realised that Iroh is one of the most well written, thought through characters I've ever seen in any show (especially in a fantasy-adventure show originally made for a very young audience). There're just so many things about him that are so well-written you almost think he's real, like how his son's death made him understand that he should value peace and life over war and self-gain, despite his heritage, as prince and general of the fire nation. Or how he redeemed himself by giving up war
and destruction to help bring peace by even helping to free the city he once tried to conquer. And if there's a person out there who stil doesn't like Iroh, even after watching the series, then: just you and me, pal, oitside 12'oclock mano a mano.
Grown ass dude at work tears just flowing down my face.
Uncle Iro is the father, uncle, brother every man has ever wanted.
I love how they even gave Azula a character that seemed at least a little human, only person who I don’t think they have any character was fire lord Ozai
Fire Lord Ozai is a minor character though
aL squeezy_tbh he is. Ozai is the cliche bad guy at the end but his children make up for it. We didn’t need another in-depth anti-villain because there was already Zuko and Azula. Truly a great show.
I guarantee they didn't give him much development on purpose. He barely had any screen time even as the main villain. I thought it was perfect. They didn't even reveal his face until season 2. I feel like not learning much about him made him scarier and unpredictable.
I dont think he was given screen time because he was the leader of the war and portrayed as having his nation fight his battles for him even to the point of having Zuko's mom kill his father so that he can get the throne instead of Iroh (who really didnt want it anyway). You dont see Ozai doing anything other than sit on the throne until the comet comes where Ozai wants to be the face of the invasion so that he can claim glory for the firenation even though it was the rest of the soldiers that set up that moment. Ozai was never born to be a leader and never showed any initiative to leading he just wanted glory. and you can see this again in the war meeting held he never speaks his thoughts and always asks someone else what they think
Ozai was undoubtedly a Narcisist
Allright, that's it. I'm rewatching Avatar. It's been too long, this is a sign

But for real, I do sometimes wonder how the people react after finding out that those kids that they encountered were actually the Avatar and the throneprince of the firenation.
Imagine Zuko being fire lord get back to the earth kingdom just to see her. How awkward it will be 😂
@@mennograafmans1595 I watched some ATLA tik tok compilations and there was one about the kids from The Headband finding out "Kuzon" was the avatar and one about random ba sing se residents finding out "Lee from the tea shop" is now the fire lord

@@voidify3 i think i saw those, they were funny, especially the ba sing se one
I sobbed like a baby when I saw the usually cheerful, jolly Uncle Iroh reduced to tears when he wishes his long departed son a happy birthday 😭😭😭😭however, if his son never died, the Iroh we know today probably would never have come to be....
A necessary sacrifice to get the Iroh we have today. It's cruel to say it, but Iroh would likely still have been his power-hungry warmongering self had his son's death not shook him up.
That one came out of blue. We all thought this Uncle Iroh story was going to be fun and uplifting,..it certainly was going that way and then he came to the tree and just stabbed us in the feels. It gets me even when I know its coming, but the first time I watched it, I had no idea what was coming
Well, yeah. Wouldn't he be the fire lord if his son never died? The show would be a little different.
I disagree. Iroh was always a more righteous man than his brother Ozai. Yes, he fought in the war, but he didn't do so out of cruelty, I think he truly believed the stories he heard about the fire nation bringing prosperity to the world.
If Iroh's son hadn't died, Ozai would have had no justification to get Iroh disinherited, and Iroh would have been the firelord instead of Ozai. Firelord Iroh would have been a way better man, and probably an ally of the avatar. Remember, he saved Ran and Shah before his son died. He was always a good person.
Which is probably why Iroh seems to believe there is never a situation without a bright side. The most brutally horrible thing that ever happened to him also set him on a path to become a good man who played a major role in ending the 100 Year War.
its even sadder when you realize the ending of Iroh's story is dedicated to the guy who played him in the fist season and halfway through the socond who sadly passed away

I wouldn’t even call him a villain. Zuko’s story is one of the best studies on child abuse I’ve ever seen. His past with Ozai led the reckless decisions he made throughout the story. He was stuck in a cycle.
