The underwater saloon brawl is an amazing scene, both as a comedic gag and as filmmaking spectacle. Working underwater is so difficult, I can only imagine the number of takes they had to do, keeping up the energy while being freezing and soaking wet.
Val has such a great comedic talent. Real Genius and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang are hilarious. He's also one of my favorite Batmen (Batman Forever) and Willow is an amazing fantasy adventure.
Kay: What time period is this?
Movie: It's complicated.
They did a blend of NAZI Germany and East Germany. The music time period would have been mid-60s.
It helps if you know the movie genre and some specific movies such as Goldfinger and the Blue Lagoon.
@@timbuktu8069 They also made jokes/references to things that happened in the 70s (exploding Ford Pinto, Jimmy Carter administration).
My favorite movie where Elvis travels to East Germany to help the French Resistance defeat the Nazis of the Soviet Bloc.
"Is this the potato farm?"
"Yes, I am Albert Potato."
To my dying day I will love this joke.
The Nigel scenes on the island is a parody of a movie called Blue Lagoon.
Greatest underwater bar fight scene in any movie ever... Change my mind.
I think it's the *only* underwater bar fight scene in any movie ever; so it appears we all are temporarily SOL for changing your mind.
[To her who is worthy of much laudation on account of her generation of her male parental unit, The Father of Kay:]
The Wall came down on November 9, 1989.
And David Hasselhoff cemented his legendary rôle in modern Teutonic popular lore forever, from New Year's Eve in Berlin that year, to the present day.
What's a 1984 top-of-the-line Trabant worth these days, anyway?
Just wonderin'.
This and Real Genius are my top favorite early Val Kilmer movies
Me too, along with Willow.
surf nicaragua , its a moral imperitive!
And as Batman?
Val actually did all his own singing on this movie. I love that guy. If you've not seen 'Real Genius' I'd certainly recommend it. It's another of Val's early movies.
Can't believe you cut out the cow scene. That one's iconic.
The bit where hes singing the song and trying to commit suicide is a parody of James Brown's act... he doesn't go that far but he has to have his backup singers help him to continue multiple times. Hes like "I just cant go on", they put a Cape over him, start waking him off stage then BAM he finds the energy to go on.
"I'll even be nice to your mama!"
The "bad movie" joke is ironic, in my opinion, because I think this movie is pretty good...Chocolate Mousse is an underrated character.
I find it quite funny that you say this wasn't a parody. The whole movie is one big parody. Its just that the films, characters, and references are from a bygone generation. One general thing being parodied is Elvis Pressley movies. Elvis was in a bunch of bad movies. Almost every scene in this movie is a parody of something. The opening scene is a parody of the beach boys. The deserted island is scene is poking fun at " Blue Lagoon" The glowing breasts are from E.T. the extra terrestreal. I undertstand why YOU dont get many of the references, But you are dead wrong. BTW I saw this at the theatres when it came out. To this day I've never seen a movie make the crowd laugh as much as they did on this one. The crowd was roaring with contagious laughter.
1. This is my favourite Comedy of all time.
2. The wall came down in 1989!
3. I'd love to come at you 😉.
Alles gute from Germany.
ooh, early Val Kilmer (singing his own songs too). This movie is fun and I used to quote it growing up. Another early Kilmer movie that you might wanna check out is Real Genius. Thanks Kay, for this one!
8:56 When Batman meets Alfred.
The year this came out, one of my friends showed up at a Halloween party in the funniest costume ever - as one of the male ballet dancers from Top Secret!
The story in this one makes very little sense, but I found it funnier than Airplane!. Like using a real cow in boots to depict what was supposed to to two men in a costume was really funny. :D The desalination joke was hilarious.
Val's hair deserved an Oscar. Cool review/reaction.
This is by far better than airplane... you're just too judgy
TRUST ME ON THIS CLASSIC,, "THE GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN"
It was a spy movie crossed with an Elvis movie. Val Kilmer showed up for his audition dressed like Elvis.
If you don't think this is the greatest comedy, then you deserve to be on the Montgomery Ward mailing list.
Val Kilmer in his prime was really something special. This was his first movie role and he knocked it out of the park, and would go on to play iconic roles in movies like _Real Genius,_ _Top Gun,_ _Tombstone,_ _Heat,_ etc. It's really a shame that he has had to deal with cancer over the last few years. If you weren't aware, he had throat cancer in 2015 which required chemo and multiple tracheotomies, leaving him with a scratchy rasp of a voice which is not ideal for an actor. He has to eat through a feeding tube as well. He's only 61. So sad.
I have been reading his Memoir. It is very good!
He is so good in Tombstone as Doc Holiday. He has some of the best lines in movie history.
In its time (1984) it was very funny and absurdist. It came out around the same time as Monty Python which made that type of jokes very popular.
awe kay, you finally did it! next one "MARS ATTACK"
*aw
If you want a hilarious comedy with real heart & love for all it's characters - a comedy that is actually a 'real' movie not just a collection of scenes or only a parody or spoof... The funniest & bestest is Mel Brook's first & finest picture - The Producers
Tigger! (my first thought) Second thought as the movie started was..."I'm sorry...why?" Then I realized it was a request possibly from people trying to get a rise out of the sweet innocent LDS girl. And...the Scarlet Pimpernel...was that with Jane Seymour? AND...they inexplicably fought with German sabers. In France? Those are the things that stand out in my mind. (Fight choreographer here...and a fan of Jane Seymour's since I saw the movie "Somewhere In Time" which you should react to.) And in this move, the scientist with the daughter? He played Alfred Pennyworth a few times but also in Batman Forever when Val Kilmer played Batman. And don't fireplaces appear whenever YOU kiss?
It was worth it just for the horse!!! :-)
Anyway, you should totally do a reaction to The Scarlett Pimpernel -- show us why you love it.
Any Elvis musical crossed with a cold war spy flick crossed with 'Blue Lagoon'. The last was big when they made this.
You can watch the reverse scene played forward. Someone made a video on YT with it forward
"Das Boot"!!!! Medium length version, the undubbed (!), german with subs.
Yes, it was playing in reverse and yes it was Peter Cushing.
If you had seen this before Airplane, you would have had lower expectations.
okay the Scarlet Pimpernel you mentioned....found it...Ian Mckellen is in it too!!! ....watching it now....digging it...thanks for the mentioned
They seek him here…
i just now noticed for the first time in the swedish bookstore "lesbian bars"
"Goodbye, Deja Vu, I'll always remember you"
Is the background still green?
Great movie. One of my favorite spoof movies. Another great spoof movie is Loaded Weapon which is a spoof on the Lethal Weapon franchise. If you want a spy spoof you should write the Austin Powers franchise.
16:44 Who else expected, "Are you ready Steve? Uh huh. Andy? Yeah. Nick? Okay. Alright fellows, let's GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
Got to give 'em props for their dedication and hard work, and some creative gags that weren't in previous Airplane-style movies.
The actor playing THE TORCH, also starred in CLOCK WORK ORANGE...
The Pinto joke is infamous, but of it's time
Fun trivia: the actor who played Dejá Vu is Jim Carter, who played the stone-faced butler Carson in "Downton Abbey."
Also, you should check out the 1984 comedy "This Is Spinal Tap."
That is amazing! What a transformation
The bookstore scene is based on the belief that English played backwards sounds like Swedish. The scene with the Ford Pinto is based on the fact that the Pinto had a rear gas tank and there were a number of incidents where rear-end collisions caused the tanks to catch on fire. The East German women's Olympic team is based on the frequent charges that athletes in Soviet and Eastern Bloc countries heavily used steroids to gain an advantage and compete (by the way, the East German anthem was actually the music of the school song of the Zuckers' high school).
i think you missed 90% of the jokes
I am a fan of The Scarlet Pimpernel also, he was considered the first superhero
This was released in '84 so probably filmed in '83. Wall came down in '85. It's supposed to be current time but with the Nazi's in control of E Germany instead of the Soviets.
You're well savvy regarding pop culture, even 80s pop culture. I salute you
Love the Batman and Alfred moment in this movie.
christopher villiers wasnt in the scarlette pimpernell - you are thinking of anthony andrews - both english and look/sound similar
It's Ex-EAST Germany, so, no world wars involved. "The Scarlet Pimpernel" was, and still is, a GREAT movie, is it not. Hey! Didn't you notice "The blue Lagoon" there? At least one parody...
This is such a crazy fun film! One of my favorite comedies!
Val Kilmer was problematic for sure, but he actually sang all the songs himself and did not deserve to have his voice box destroyed by cancer!
Skeet Surfing should be an olympic sport and required training for Seals and Marines. Just think in landings having armed surfers spreading out avoiding becoming mass targets and cheep equipment as a force multiplyer.
This is one of my fave comedies ever!!! I've seen this move a lot of times, maybe 10 times or so...
When I first saw this movie I found it "just" funny, but then I saw it again, and then a 3rd time, and then another time... then finally I found it really really funny, hilarious.
You have to see this movie many times, then it'll grow in you and you'll find it much funnier than the 1st time, trust me on this!
Wow. I don't think you got this movie. Maybe it's a generation thing. Every single scene in this movie is hilarious and contains something funny/silly. Maybe except the very last one with the plane taking off.
This is my favorite comedy. It still puts me in tears after watching it.
11:37 Peter Cushing. Grand Moff Tarkin in Star Wars, he was in many horror films as well.
5:27 Yeah, I never got that joke, I´m too stupid!
In the German dub he says something like " My dad came up with that name for me, when he had a stiff neck." THAT one I could understand.
But can someone please explain to my idiot brain, what "Nick" has to do with shaving?....
@@DistractedArachnid Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!!! Thank you *so much* !!!!
Have you ever seen "u.h.f."?
Do "Willow" by Ron Howard
My fav comedy!!!
I say give Airplane II a shot.
I love it, just not as much as the first one.
Different writers, different directors, they recycle many jokes from the first movie, terrible critical ratings...
I know I'm really hyping this movie up.
I just want to make it clear that I know this is the interior sequel, but still it does have some new gags, some new ideas to parody, and it nicely continues the story of Ted and Elaine.
If I'm not laughing myself silly I'm at least feeling really good as I watch this. It's comforting in its familiarity, in spending time again with characters you loved from the first movie, even if they are doing the same shtick again.
All that said, go into this one with low expectations and you may really like it.
Best Regards!
Worth watching for William Shatner's performance, if nothing else. Not as great as the original (how could it ever be?), but it has some good laughs and it's worth watching.
You mentioned that it recycled a lot of jokes in the first one. Whether that was intentional or not I don't know but I find it to be perfect. At the time airplane 2 came out the big critique of sequels is that they just redid the first film. So airplane two took that and brought it up 10 levels.
Top secret is my favorite comedy, even more than airplane
That was Peter Cushing who played Grand Moff Tarkin in Star Wars. This is one of my favorite movies it came out in 84 the year I graduated High School
YES, LOVE the Scarlet Pimpernel!
"Shop at Macy's."
I like almost all the Zucker Bros movies. As a kid my favorite part was the goofy jokes in the credits. Every movie has them.
If you haven't already seen them, I highly recommend the first Hot Shots (directed by Jim Abrahams, who worked with the Zucker Brothers) and Weird Al's UHF. They're both way funnier than Top Secret.
They drew from several movies, including one with Gary Cooper and Lili Palmer ('Cloak and Dagger'). The weakness of 'Top Secret' is that it doesn't stick to a through line story and traditional characters for that story (as 'Airplane' did), so it feels a bit unfocused. Even in a comedy like this we need some basic structure to hold onto. The jokes are among the very best the Zucker brothers and Abrahams ever came up with.

anybody else notice this movie has batman AND alfred in it?
react to Hotshots, its just like this and airplane, based on Top Gun!
It's a parody of war, spy and Elvis movies in general with extra, mainly visual jokes.
WOW, I had no idea that was Peter Cushing and I saw this in first run!
It's refreshing to see a reaction video where the person reacting is actually critical of what they're watching. (I love Top Secret so I'm not saying this to agree with your reaction). So many reaction videos are just affirmations for people who love what's being watched.
I recommend Val Kilmer's next movie 'Real Genius'.
BASEketball, My Blue Heaven you will also enjoy.
Well that was a piss poor reaction. You have every right not to find this film funny (although it is) but to claim it wasn't a parody or zany. Seriously I think you may have been watching a completely different film (either that or you genuinely have no idea what the word parody actually means). 🤯
ZAZ have said this is their favorite of the movies they made.
The wall came down some years after this was made.
This beats Airplane in my mind
That sweatshirt makes me happy. Another film with this style of humor is "Johhny Dangerously" with Micheal Keaton.
Deja vu , I will remember you most of all.
Hit the like button immediately because I knew Kay's response to this ... the zenith of the Zucker Brothers ... would be worth all 23 1/2 minutes.
Funny...Carson (Downton Abbey) never mentioned his time as a French Resistance fighter (aka Deja Vu)
Check out Brain Donors.its inspired by the Marx Brother's Night at the Opera.mupoets fans will recognize the actress who Played Jenny from Muppets take Manhattan

Surprising Killer didn't do more comedies like this....he's a natural.
Kilmer*
16:17 - I prefer the Scarlet Pumpernickel, starring Daffy Duck.
Hello Kay 👋 G'day from Australia 🇦🇺 a good reaction video I remember watching 👀 this and thinking 🤔 this is a weird movie to have an actor like Omar Sharif in it as he's not known for comedy , you are a Loverly person Kay 😀
. CAN'T BELIEVE I WAS ENJOYING MORE THE MOVIE SCENES
she kept interrupting 😛
The wall did not go up till after ww2 ;)
Wow, people think of Star Wars when they mention Peter Cushing?
um, yeah. I know he did lots of hammer horror and other stuff but star wars is... star wars. star wars leaves a huge impression on people, cushing makes an impression in the film, and lots of us saw star wars when we were young, making it the first time we saw cushing :-)
also one of the only major speaking characters who never got an action figure in the old kenner toy line that a lot of us found a glaring omission. so the fact that we wanted a tarkin action figure but could never get one made him more memorable (obviously this kenner stuff was way before Kay's time, haha
@@willarms5510 this world is saturated in StarWars culture and I ll never understand it.
I like your Tigger shirt.
Ist die Tochter achtzehn bitte?
Another reactor who doesn't understand how these movies work. Forget the storyline, the time periods, all that stuff. The sole purpose of movies like this is to make you laugh. That's it. If you're nitpicking about stuff, you've gone in with the wrong mentality
Top secret is a classic I know about the Scarlet Pimpernel lol
So glad you got to watch this film
when i first saw this i had a headache
It is NOT Mel Torme....
That sneeze scene lol.
'He's in Downton Abbey, now!
*MAKE YOUR PICTURE A LITTLE SMALLER AND OFF TO THE SIDE SO WE CAN SEE WHAT YOU'RE COMMENTING ON... ;-)*
Thank you for reviewing this! I genuinely haven’t seen this movie in at least 30 years. Lol. Pre-Top Gun Val Kilmer!
