I think the sad part is that very composers write for beautiful voices anymore. It is hard to impossible to find many good soprano roles that really show off the beauty of their voices anymore
Camelot was one of the best Broadway musicals ever. This fun song is one of many wonderful tunes. This young lady and the group does a great job. I like that many songs in the play are tongue in cheek while others are sad or speak of love and right and wrong.
Oh my goodness gracious!!! I think after this performance, I will call this , “The JOYFUL Month of May, “!!! My heart was filled with JOY, as I watched this wonderful performance and can only imagine when it is performed on stage!! I am so excited for all of you!!! Break a leg!!! Thank you for sharing this and I hope that Julie Andrews gets to see the show!! I think she will be so very proud! In a side note, Break a leg Mr . Sher!! I had the pleasure of working with your brother when he taught music at our charter school!! I hope he is doing well too!! Have lots of fun performing, as will your audience too!!😊👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️
I saw it a week ago. This number, and Phillips Soo, are the best part of this production. But I do not recall quite so many cast members singing along. She is amazing. But she deserved equally talented people around her.
When you have listened to the great Julie Andrews version of this, well...its hard to find anything else of that phrasing, vocal quality, diction and just sheer musicianship.
What a pretty, crystalline legit soprano Soo has! Angelic. Almost *too* pure, lol, at least for "The Lusty Month of May" talking about devil-may-care revelry. But we know Soo has plenty of vocal skill so I'm wondering if this was a day she was taking things very gently, maybe marking to save her voice? I don't think it's just having a light voice--certainly Julie Andrews had a gorgeously pure soprano and she was able to convey this naughty side of "Genny." Guinevere may end up in a convent but she's someone with real heart and passion, with a romantic/adventurous soul who once dreamed of kith killing their kin for her! So I bet in actual performance Philippa does a fantastic job and lets history's most famous fictional adulteress go mad in the lusty month of May.
Despite my love for Redgrave as Guinevere in the turgid Logan film, there's more energy in this BTS static studio capture than any moment in the movie's.

The more often I see this the better I like it - the way Guenevere leads with motions and the ensemble echoes her, the beauty of her high register which I'd like to hear more often. Philippa, please give up belting! It's a pity for your beautiful voice. My voice teacher actually gave up teaching at a voice department because they were encouraging belting, which is violence to the voice and to the ears. Phillipa, you are a star and your voice is a gift. Make your next show something that shows off your gifts.
I didn't actually hear much in the way of belting, but instead she was using her mix voice where needed. I think I noticed one place where she pulled her chest voice too high (and it showed up in the tone she was able to produced), but I assume that was a mistake that got polished before the show opened.

She did that very well, especially the second stanza. I want her to just sing, just let her voice go, as she has a beautiful voice. She has to do justice to the long phrases. But she is very cute when it's not overplayed. The girl who sang "Whence this fragrance floating everywhere" was off key.
This interpretation lacks structure and direction in my opinion. Phillipa is too careful with the vocals for some reason. Maybe she’s trying to convey a naughty timidness but it doesn’t really come through like that, especially with all those weird pauses before the end of each stanza but I suppose that’s on the musical director.
Will there be any choreography here or are they all going to just stand there? This should be a show stopper with some real dance involved. No? Twyla Tharp.
@@alhambralions5985 You can't help but make comparisons. Julie Andrews was a real star, and not only was she was so much better, its also that the reimagined version of this number looks as though nobody knows what to do. The looks like an operetta.
I always forget she’s a stunning soprano. She belts so much nowadays.
Belting is the enemy of music.
I wouldn't describe her singing as belting at all. It's just not the head voice that this kind of classical piece uses.
I think the sad part is that very composers write for beautiful voices anymore. It is hard to impossible to find many good soprano roles that really show off the beauty of their voices anymore
Please feel free to post some examples of Soo’s “stunning soprano”.

This performance is making me rethink this - I was really put off by the bleh costumes and retooling of the story but they do justice to this song.

The cast recording for this new revival is coming out June 2. You also have Andrew Bernap, who won the Tony in 2021 for The Inheritance.
