  • In this video, I replace parts on my Nissan Elgrand. The parking brake (handbrake) has stopped gripping, and so these repairs are essential for the safety of the vehicle.
With the MoT due this week I know the parking brake isn’t good enough, and in inspection it’s clear why.
The car is a gen 3 Nissan elgrand 3.5 highway star with 4wd. But I beleive all the e51 Elgrands have the same rear brake setup regardless of spec.
The goal is to stop the Elgrand from rolling back down my drive!

The small plastic screw in the disc can be removed so that you can adjust the adjuster wheel with a small flathead screwdriver with the disc still on, I tend to adjust it up so it's just starting to bind when you rotate the disc with one hand with the handbrake off, this will give you a solid handbrake with about 3/4 clicks up on the handbrake lever :) Good work though and lovely van

Cheers man. Yeah, I did realise that but didn’t include it in the video because it was far too tight to get any rotation on it and I couldn’t show it very well. Thanks for the comments mate.

A really great tutorial man. I'd be using vice grips for the springs instead of the needle nose pliers, so much easier and adjust the adjuster just off friction point on the spot when fitting the disk saves getting in and out testing it (I'm old)!

Yeah your probably right there. I did the first one off camera like that and didn’t quite get the feel I was happy with

@@InitialB After watching your movie, I did mine and one of the Sliders head rounded, so I couldn't get one out, so I had to remove the bracket and was still able to separate the parts to grease the sliders and insert the new pads. Another "land mine" was the piston had come out too far (one pad down to metal) and had seized. I was very lucky to be able to get it back in. Next time will be a full refurb.

Thank's for the video my E51 just failed the MOT due to the parking break not being strong enough when tested.
So I guess I will give this a go ready for next week, for my second MOT.
Am I correct in thinking that there are two such breaking mechanisms both in the rear wheels?

Ah cool, glad it’s of help. Yeah you’ve got the calliper which is controlled by your normal brake pedal and the drum brake system controlled by the left foot brake in each wheel.

Funny my Nissan Xtrail needs exactly the same doing from 2005. After watching/editing this video maybe I should do it myself
