BANDS THAT SHOULD'VE BEEN BIGGER: Darkest Hour, Man Overboard, Snapcase, The Starting Line

  • Five more bands that should've been been bigger: Darkest Hour, Man Overboard, Brain Drill, and The Starting Line
    - How Darkest Hour pioneered the fusion of hardcore and Swedish death metal ala At The Gates and Dismember (and Mike Schleibaum's roots in the DC hardcore scene with his old band Battery)
    - How Man Overboard had huge hype coming off their "Defend Pop Punk" era but seemed to plateau shortly after (and Waterparks blew up)
    - How Snapcase was probably the biggest 90s hardcore band at one point, and why I hope they're the next band that hypecore kids latch on to (they do sound a LOT like Turnstile)
    - Why The Starting Line never got bigger after "Say It Like You Mean It" (and my thoughts on Kenny Vasoli's new band Vacationers)
    - How Brain Drill's brand of crazy technical death metal blew my mind back in the Myspace days (and Lord Marco, if you're watching this... hi!)

I tried as hard as I could to keep the original line up but I can't control who stays and who goes. So if you take into account the complexity of the music, the complexity of everyones schedules and personal lives it becomes difficult to keep a solid line up of original members. I have always given everyone the option to come back and have asked several members to come back in the past. If you look around I'm sure you'll find that a lot of bands have a lot of line up changes especially in metal/technical death metal. Have a good one.

The fact you opened with darkest hour made me geek out a little bit. I have always done my damnedest to help people navigate through their albums and like recommend tracks that spoke to me. And it literally just never caught on with any of my friends, Deliver Us and Undoing Ruin were two back to back masterpieces to me, and evey subsequent album afterwards were more mature more refined and just really well done! Their waaaay earlier stuff you can totally tell what scene they came out of. John has never changed his vocal style from the hardcore style, which is probably the biggest reason I love them so much 👌

I always thought their name came from the Far song, but they named themselves after a Blink-182 song. I think they could have been bigger, but to me it was maybe a timing issue. They came out at 2008, and that was just a weird time for any type of rock band (other than Kings of Leon). It was that post-garage rock/post post-punk/post-third wave of indie rock revival period that didn’t really give room for newer rock oriented bands. That’s kind of when MGMT broke. The trajectory was already going in another direction.

Snapcase was one of those bands that was always on the road. I also loved these guys. Yes, that snare sound! Those guitars were completely unusual. There was so much creative energy flowing through the work those guys put out musically. Though, to me the recordings never quite captured or raised up the Snapcase sound as a whole; And the Victory packaging never really dovetailed with the unique character of Snapcase as an exceptional band.

90’s era hardcore kid here. We grew up on the same bands it seems. I’m down in Southern California. Anytime Snapcase came into town, it was a legit event. Progression Through Unlearning is a hardcore education staple, as well as the Steps EP. I’m surprised to hear people complain about the vocals - it was incredibly punchy and powerful in their realm. Their later albums were pretty rough though.
I grew up in what would affectionately be called Spirit Filled Hardcore with bands like Focused, Unashamed, and early Zao. Those were some of the best days.
I’m out of the loop on hardcore, but I’m not sure if you’ve spent anytime with the San Diego scene like Unbroken, Swing Kids (or any of Justin Pearson’s output), etc.
Last, I’m a huge fan of The Chariot. Have you heard Josh Scogin’s current stuff with 68’? It’s mind blowing at times.

Fun video! I just discovered yr channel. I got to see Darkest Hour & Snapcase a few times. First time I saw Darkest Hour, they got dates mixed up and showed up to the wrong city - 5 hours away! They kept driving, got to the show an hour after the last band played (Submission Hold from Canada) and played a killer set to a small crowd. Around that time, before Mark of the Judas came out, they were phoning promoters and just telling them they shred. They were right. Ahhh life before the internet!

All that energy that was on their up debut was missing. They put out an EP in 2016 w/3 songs and it’s actually not bad--it has the catchy pop sensibilities that they nail, but again it just doesn’t have the tempo and energy I got from album one.

The Punk Rock MBA just watched their documentary on YT (somebody’s gonna miss us). It really shows their lack of luck...I had no idea both times they signed to majors they got parked (no touring, lost all momentum). Between that, the interband issues (some wanting major fame ala FOB vs others refusing to write for radio) and then that obvious change in sound/tempo, I think we can concretely conclude what happened. FYI, check that documentary out if you’ve got 50 mins free--pretty telling, even just through body language/between the lines.

Great episode man. Darkest Hour is great. I really liked the turn in sound on the album Deliver Us. They definitely went for like an In Flames kinda singing/screaming dynamic. Snapcase is among my favorite hardcore bands and I am 35. I think your mention of 38years is a little high as I know a lot of people my age that like them. I agree with you though that they are largely forgotten especially when compared to bands like Refused who i think they kinda occupied the same space with. Progression Through Unlearning was a game changer along with that Steps EP. The Starting Line, one thing I will say is that it seemed like after that debut album they were always chasing the "this is our mature album" sound and it just never was as good as that first LP and their first EP which is also really good (it had that tricycle on the cover). I love Vacationer though, especially that first album. Perfect for summer listening by the pool or at a beach or if you want to pretend you are on vacation. I really like how they mix doo-wop with the more modern kinda trip hop and pop sounds. Not something i always want to listen to but it has its moments.

Dropped a fairly hyped record on Epitaph in 2010 (even toured here in Australia in 2011 and played to some fairly big crowds), but then a year or so after that they pretty much dropped off the earth. I didn't even know they had released another record in 2013 until I just looked them up then.

If you watch the Starting Line documentary “Somebody’s Going To Miss Us” it totally explains why they weren’t bigger. Pretty much they just kept either making the wrong choices or getting screwed by labels. Like they were going to record with a producer and decided not to, then that producer’s next album was a smash hit for Fall Out Boy. They just had a lot of “face palm” moments. It’s unfortunate but I’d take their amount of success any day. Just to be signed to a label as rad as drive thru was back then, tour and have a dedicated fan base is cool to me.
I talked about Man-O in my other comment but forgot to mention Waterparks. That’s another newer band I actually really like. Being managed by the Madden Brothers doesn’t hurt your career either. Super catchy and I love the falsetto vocal parts. Unfortunately it’s a sound they can’t reproduce live. Because their albums are so overproduced they at least need to add an auxiliary guitarist or synth and definitely need a vocal pedal. I was bummed to see them fall short live. I’ve been playing in bands a long time and I know how hard it is, but they definitely need to add something to cushion their live show if they can’t come close to their recordings. Hopefully it’s something they work on.
