I never thought the argument that "you're disturbing the past" held much weight in this situation. If these people were indeed murdered, giving them a name would be a good way of trying to find out what happened.
If you want to go for the spirits of the town angle, I think they'd be happy to be remembered for who they were, rather than as just two skeletons in the hillside. I think you should at least try and name them. You don't have to move them, but just uncover them enough to get a sample.
I know I'd want people to find me if I was murdered.

    Dear Paul,
I was deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Bosco. Words can hardly capture the profound impact that such a devoted and hard-working companion can have, not just on you but on the countless lives he touched through his invaluable work.
It's more than just the skill and dedication Bosco showed in his job; it's the unwavering friendship, loyalty, and warmth he brought into your life and the lives of everyone who had the fortune to know him. A dog's love is uncomplicated yet profound, and Bosco’s love and trust were a testament to the incredible bond you both shared.
You trained him, worked with him, and were by his side through thick and thin. While Bosco may have been doing his job when he was out in the field, it was clear that he was doing it not just because he was trained to, but because he had a true partner in you.
We sometimes forget that these amazing animals aren’t just tools of their trade but also friends, family, and confidants. Bosco was a hero in every sense of the word, and it's heart-wrenching to know that he has passed away. Yet, the legacy he leaves behind-lives saved, families consoled, and a standard set for devotion and excellence-will continue to live on.
Please know that you are in my thoughts during this difficult time. Take all the time you need to grieve, and remember that it's okay to feel the loss deeply; it's a testament to the incredible bond you shared. I hope that, in time, your pain will be replaced by fond memories and the lasting impact Bosco had on everyone around him.
    With deepest sympathy,
    jl.ophoff (gmail) from Belgium ❤

Markers for grave areas, and testing for DNA should be done with the aid of an archaeologist. Finding DNA matches could help bring closure to families who lost members and never knew what happened to them or where they went. My own family has such a story, a family member named Toy with only one arm. One night he walked out to get cigarettes and milk in the early 1900s and no one ever saw him again. He left behind a wife and two boys, and I know their descendants would love to know what happened to him. Rest in peace, Bosco 💔

Such a sad story, especially thinking of the time frame and how society would treat people and the roles they were expected to fulfil. Look at the early 30's where many not just left their families to find work, but also to avoid living with the stigma of being unemployed, as they didn't always send money home either once they found it.

If I had any idea that an ancestor of mine was buried at Cerro Gordo, I'd appreciate knowing where they were buried. I agree, too, that calling in an expert makes sense. I think that you trying to recover the DNA, Brent, is a big task, and having an archaeologist to help (or just do it) seems like it would make it much easier.
It could be done in stages, to make it easier on you.

My family has placed engraved markers for family members when we found their graves and for ones that only had big stones with no information. I guess that's what I thought of when Brent asked what we, the viewers, thought. Some families might want to put a marker up for someone they lost if the grave could be found again. I grew up picnicking in the graveyard, and communities would gather to tend the cemetery a couple of times a year. It was considered a public space, almost like a park. I don't think the past minds if we re-discover it.@@shannahmiller

RIP Bosco, good dog! Cemeteries need special attention, even after a hundred years of neglect. The first thing is to map out the boundaries, then locate and mark the locations of remains. Then identify the distances between individual and and clusters of graves. After everyone is located, draw sections on the map and implant iron stakes to subdivide them. Each grave should have an individually measurable location so it can be located, each can then be marked for proper reverence. Areas where walkways come through should be rough cleared, as well as a chain perimeter fence and gate constructed. Finally, a historic cemetery bronze sign needs to be erected to tell the story of why so many people are buried anonymously. If possible in a desert, perhaps a bit of landscaping to pretty it up some. My dream project! Happy Saturday Brent!

I think it is better just to mark the areas and perhaps delineate the area and erect markers as a memorial. Getting samples seems complex and I am not sure about disturbing remains by digging, etc. But that is just my take on it. I am sure whatever decision you make, will be a well-thought-out decision. One thought I had while watching: if you pursue identifying the remains by the cabin, what about the many, many other remains? Maybe that is part of your instinct, that much of Cerro Gordo is sacred ground.
At some point, an interfaith memorial for all the "lost" of Cerro Gordo might bring a sense of peace. I am thinking Buddhist & Indigenous practitioners be included?

Bosco was a good dog! May he rest in peace. I know you’re not keen on disturbing graves, but I think you should get forensics involved. There could be quite a few people around today who would want to know the fate of their ancestors. Maybe they only have half the story. I don’t know anything about my family before they moved from Lebanon and it’s likely I never will. We never found out what happened to my great great aunt. The only thing we know is that she stopped posting letters and was assumed dead at that time. There was a siege on Racheya in the 1920s. It makes me anxious just thinking about it. The war in Syria won’t allow any of us to go find out anything. Anyway what I’m trying to say is, great great grandchildren or nieces and nephews would want to know, and I think you should get in touch with a forensics team.

To identify every burial up at Cerro Gordo would be a Herculean task.
Paul Dostie and the late, great sleuth hound, Bosco, did a wonderful thing: Brent is now aware of the final resting places of the CG community on Boot Hill; and has most likely discovered the placement for the Chinese community's burials. A 'perimeter' fence around the main burial site, and a similar identifying boundary or monument for the Chinese buried there, would be a respectful acknowledgement.
The 'Writer's Cabin' graves are another matter, entirely. Paul has acknowledged the likelihood of those graves being the site of murder burials--possibly the one-time occupants of that cabin. These are the burials which should be investigated by the professionals: forensics experts, DNA analysts. Who knows, Brent? You may even discover the final resting place of the Crapo bandito, whose remains were never found...you did say that Crapo was supposed to have gone into hiding in a mine--and Bosco identified human remains near the mine entrance beside the cabin. 🤔🤔
One more thing concerning 'disturbing the dead' or 'allowing them to rest peacefully'. If your burial/remains went 'missing', would you consider this 'restful'? Put yourself in their RIP boots, and consider how you'd feel if no one bothered to acknowledge (or protect) your grave.

    • @nozzzzy
      @nozzzzy 9 месяцев назад +5

@jims5693 I still think identifying them and giving them proper burial markings would be more good than bad, even if there wasn't a murder. I'm not entirely sure how this dog functions, though. What if they're buried up on the hill and the rains have just washed the decomp to the bottom by the cabin? Either way, recovering the bones and figuring out how they died if possible and maybe finding their relatives through DNA, then re-burying them properly with markings sounds like an overall better outcome than doing nothing and leaving it up to speculation. Besides, the people buried there don't care at this point lol. If it were me and I was a ghost I'd take comfort in the fact that I was found and made to be not forgotten, but thats just me.

And when it thawed? Those haphazard burials would have to be dealt with--but they weren't. Paul Dostie's observation that those graves came as a result of foul play, should be respected, given his vast experience in the field. Getting to the bottom of that particular mystery would be a significant step in the right direction.@@jims5693

I think finding the proper people, and moving forward with possibly identifying those who have passed, is extremely important. It’s important not to forget where we’ve come from & to remember their names…I think the spirits would be appreciative; while it may stir up some activity spiritually I think the sense of rest & peace they would know after being identified would be worth it.
My condolences to Paul for the loss of such a sweet, intelligent little baby…that absolutely broke my heart

I think it would be nice to find out more about the people who died. I believe the spirits would understand and would also appreciate there stories finally being told.

RIP Bosco. The contributions to history that you and Paul made brought both peace and history “alive.” Brent - keep up with the work. If you can, find out who the dead are through DNA or whatever you have the money to do. It will add richness to Cerro Gordo’s history and story that would otherwise lay dormant. Just my opinion. -Tim

So sad about Bosvo. He was such a good boi. Dogs hold a special place in our hearts. He was a particularly cool, loving and smart dog too. I think you should pursue the DNA angle, and make proper memorials for them, particularly with those who lost their lives down in the mines. When you think about it, all of those people (largely men) were 1000's of km away from family and friends, there to find their fortunes. It would be a way of memorialising their lives, and a way of bringing Cerro Gordo's ghostly patrons out of rhe shadows. 💗🌵

It's closure to some family member. I say help families of loved ones who may be buried there and let them decide on what they want to do with the remains. You may also be helping police close a missing person case or a murder case even though it being such a long time ago. RIP Bosco. What an amazing dog.
