Shocking Ladies with The Sound of Silence Piano "You're Twelve?!?!" Cole Lam 12 Years Old

  • [EDIT: To hear this on a wonderful public grand piano - go to this: • The Sound of Silence M... - it's a Yamaha S6 grand, and the rumbling bass is amazing, and adds so much to the tone of the song]
Are you allowed to have many favourite songs? This has become another of my favourites - The Sound of Silence, the original version by Simon and Garfunkel. There is a more modern cover by Disturbed • Disturbed - The Sound... which is in a different style, more heavy and dark, with the original more soulful. The Disturbed one is also much more orchestral as well which fits the song and their amazing music video. I love how songs that were written years ago can still mean so much today.
Piano Tutorial: • The Sound of Silence P...
Sheet music for The Sound of Silence: bit.ly/CL_TSOS
My arrangement is a bit of a mix of both with a lightness from Simon and Garfunkel and "darkness" from the Disturbed version.
Oh - I think this is the first time you actually hear my dad in one of the videos? Oh no, it's the second time - do you know the first?
The ladies really enjoyed it and were shocked that I was 12 - I ha a nice chat with them. Also, a little bit of people watching - the lady with the red beret walking by, and must have walked behind the lift and came round the other side to watch me!

If you would like to hear this on a better tuned piano (also in public) - check this: I have played on a much better piano, also in public at a shopping centre. The piano I played on in the linked video is a Yamaha S6 - and the rumbling bass is amazing, and adds so much to the tone of the song: ruclips.net/video/33_Sh-AZvlA/видео.html
This is my own arrangement of The Sound of Silence - a merge of Simon & Garfunkel and Disturbed. If you would like my arrangement on sheet music - I am a Signature Artist on MusicNotes. 🎹 My Arrangement of The Sound of Silence: Sheet Music on MusicNotes: bit.ly/CL_TSOS

When a twelve year child plays music from the 1960;s and the 1970s with such dynamics ( variation in loudness between notes or phrases), great feelings and love, you would know that those two decades were the greatest of the modern music. Artists were more of artists than simply entertainers. Keep up the good work Cole, your parents get the greatest credit.

I wouldn’t even call them entertainers-I assume you are talking about the assaults on our ears that we have suffered on probably the last 30 or more years!! More like attention seeking, obnoxious children. I want to tell them that whoever told them the lie that they could sing you should go punch them in the mouth. When a so called song comes on wit h some of the filthiest language in history it makes me want to throw up.

    Impressive. Wonderfully played.
Felt the emotions to the core in heart when most people around didn't even stop to listen. Just like it's said in song.
Ofcourse they will have their reasons of being in hurry etc but so does everyone else around the world even now.

I remember when my eldest was learning piano in the eighties and early nineties he wanted so much to play ‘Chariots of Fire’. At that point he couldn’t do the full reach for the chords at the beginning so wrote his own version of that part! Sadly, his teacher wasn’t impressed, but I was and loved to hear him play.

The Sound of Silence is one of MY favourite songs, too, and you played it beautifully. I can still remember buying the album (yes, an LP!) back in 1974, my first year at University, and enjoying this song above all the others ... such a perfect blending of poetry and music.

I find it very beautiful to see how you give people such moments, how they pause and perceive only the "now". This moment. You touch people and each one feels something very personal or remembers something from the past. Really great!

For whatever reason, the mighty YT Algorithm decided to recommend this video today & I'm glad it did. SUPER performance in a less than optimal setting on a less than optimal instrument. NOW - for all those lamenting in the comments about so many people rushing past & not stopping to enjoy - go back & notice all the folks rushing past have their rolling carry-on luggage in tow...b/c this was probably filmed in a terminal. Getting the full picture before judging others is never a bad idea.

In a mall, holidays... People are elevated by this whether they stop to enjoy, or just enjoy in passing. The good vibes( literally) keep the holiday mood festive. I would appreciate it as I walked by. Only westerners feel the need to stand and clap. Many people smile their approval
