- Cyril E King airport! Delta Airlines take-off at the USVI of St Thomas
The The Cyril E. King International Airport (CEKA) is a public airport located at No. 70 Lindbergh Bay on the southwestern side of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands - approximately four miles east of the capital city, Charlotte Amalie. CEKA is one of the busiest airports in the eastern Caribbean
The airport operates 24 hours; however, the airport terminal is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Aircraft, rescue, and firefighting services are available during that time. The Air Traffic Control Tower operates from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
The U.S. Virgin Islands was purchased in 1917 by the United States America. The first Airport was St. Thomas Airport, which was a small airstrip that was founded in the 1920s. The site on which the first Airport was built, was known as Mosquito Bay. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh first landed the Spirit of St. Louis on a field, which was situated on the north of what was formerly known as Mosquito Bay, currently called Lindbergh Bay, that was renamed in honor of Charles Lindbergh.
Year after, on January 22, 1928, the first passengers of the Airport arrived on St. Thomas by air via the La Nina. It was a monoplane that was owned by the Aerial Express Co. of San Juan and carried its pilot and only four passengers.
Later, the U.S. government developed the airstrip and again, renamed it to as Bourne Field. The newly called Bourne Field served as an airfield for the U.S. Military. Soon after World War II, the military ceased, and the Airport turned over to the VI government. The original terminal of the Airport was an old military hangar that was constructed in the 1940s. The Airport was named in honor of Harry S. Truman, who was the 33rd President of the United States.
In 1984, the Airport was again renamed after the late Governor Cyril Emmanuel King, who was the second elected governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The Construction of the current Cyril E. King airport terminal started in the 1980s and completed in the late 1990s. The STT’s runway was extended from 4,200 ft. to its present 7,000 lengths in 1992. Notably, the Cyril E. King Airport holds one of the largest dredged, deep-water runways in the Caribbean
