Camille Saint-Saëns - Tarantella Op. 6 (audio + sheet music)

- This is a relatively early work in Saint-Saëns' output, but it already shows the considerable skills of its creator. As many classical music enthusiasts know, the composer was a child prodigy and thus evolved his mature style rather quickly. This piece has all the sophistication of the work of a seasoned master, at least in its instrumental writing. Its music may not divulge the originality or thematic distinctiveness of many of Saint-Saëns' later works, but it has charm and a deft sense of humor. This Tarantella is catchy from its opening notes: zesty rhythms and menacing dance music combine to create an amusingly creepy atmosphere that augurs the mood and writing in such works as Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice. The music is lively, not as fast, however, as that usually associated with tarantellas, which often have a frenzied character. Here, Saint-Saëns seems to want to underscore the myth about the origins of this Italian dance, which was thought to result from the bite of a tarantula spider or to serve as its cure. He makes the flute and clarinet slither and swirl and dance so menacingly, often in unison, and partners them with discreet and subtle orchestral writing. This is a fine piece now sometimes heard in an arrangement for flute, clarinet, and piano.

This music makes me feel like a snake that was charmed into dancing for 14 hours nonstop
I'm afraid I will always remember your comment when playing this piece and burst out in laughter.
@@sabinedeixler2637 Then my job here is done ;D
@@Roma-kp4qg done way too well... 😂
@Roma funny enough the legend of the tarantella involves medieval townsfolk dancing uncontrollably. Legend has it that the music was supposed to cure ailments ('Tarantula bite') but more likely the town would go into a dance craze after mass hysteria/shock from some bizzare event, and they would play the fast paced tarantella
🤣
Saint Saens' writing for winds is stupendous!
Y U NO UPLOAD ANYMORE... D:
Saint-Saëns is definitely a great composer who is well worth discovering...

the staccato/jumpy chords on the piano that are always upholding the melody really help the 3 parts mould together to create something magical

It's ingenious, in my humble opinion... I haven't yet heard Saint-Saens from this side, a magnificent combination of wittiness and mystery. I'm astounded.
Just a masterpiece!!!The great play!Bravissimi
Entertaining. A sheer exercise in craftsmanship written by a great composer doing his morning composing while making use of the toilet.
Really?
grazie! Un piccolo gioiello che scopro attraverso questo canale..... sono al cinquantesimo ascolto...... meraviglioso...
This piece is so beautiful 😍❤️
Fantastic! And with the sheet music! Thank you!
it's an authentic tarantella, it respects traditional features of this folk italian music
I loved this, thanks for sharing!
You're welcome. :)
5:58 Wow! A high G on the clarinet! 0_0
Rose Cadenza isn’t that an E though?
@I Did Something NO THANKS
@DevinDeath ok devin
This recording uses an A clarinet. It’s a high F# on the standard Bb clarinet, which is a high G on the A clarinet
I think it's not in key. They probably wrote the clarinet part as if it were for flute or piano instead of Bb
I hope to find myself some flute and clarinet players to play this piece with when I study music in college! :D

Yeah, its amazing how this hit in so many ways
One of the motifs reminds me of Shostakovich's DSCH motif, used in many of his works.

Scroll down until you find sheet music and then click the tab that says “Parts (20)” and if you scroll down there will be a part transposed to Bb. I played through this with my friend a couple times and it’s a lot of fun :D

Did anybody else hear the constant ticking of flute and clarinet keys? They need to reposition the mikes. Distracting.
flute and clarinet keys replay the sound of the tamburello basco (other of the tricche ballacche)
both the instruments are twice, piatti and bass
I kinda enjoy the sounds. It makes it sound more real if that makes sense

What does tarantella mean?
"Tarantella is a group of various folk dances characterized by a fast upbeat tempo, usually in time, accompanied by tambourines. It is among the most recognized forms of traditional southern Italian music." (Wikipedia)
thank you!!
"usually in time" didn't you mean to type "usually in 6/8 time" ?
It's a copypaste. Some tarantellas, interestingly, do not restrict themselves to 6/8 time.
@@thenameisgsarci That's why there is a "usually". But yes, they sometimes have other time signatures
It kinda sounds like Brahms
The Dsch motif is found throughout.
Hmm another Shostakovich fan
