When Death used it for the first time, he was able to push Puss around more and overwhelm him. Once Puss started to put pressure on him and move around more, the staff's hitting power became less valuable. I'm not an expert in these kinds of weapons, but that's what I observed.
It's also easier to control one staff type weapon over two blade weapons. However, as pointed out, you sacrifice flexibility and a wider range of combos for better control and power. Plus, at this point, Death was essentially testing Puss' will.
you are 200% correct. to be precise, an agile swordfighter would use a rapier to attack and a short, sturdy, dagger to parry. just like puss. as for those that mention the sickle staff as being weaker than the two sickles, sorry people but you are wrong. the only downside of the stay is that it's less flexible. a staff has better range and lobo uses it with speed and precision. unless puss manages to get, again, in close combat, the staff is far more deadly. the fight is like a videogame's final boss. you finish stage one (sickles) and lobo changes weapon to use a bladed staff.
It's kind of funny to think that major antagonists having "multiple phases" to their fights started as a gameplay mechanic for RPGs to draw out the length of a fight without making it thematically monotonous, and has ended up becoming a fantastic story device as well.

I feel like Puss’ battle style alone depicts development in this scene. He’s concentrated, parrying a lot more, using both hands when taking up a stance with his sword, treating it like a proper duel and in turn showing, Death, respect. When he gets the upper hand he’s not show boating but reinforcing what he’s fighting for, thus he’s comfortable to quip about showing off the gatito blade and ending the battle off with his signature spin attack. This is the new way of life that Puss found on that journey of self discovery and he’ll never stop fighting for it.

Trolls, Trollhunters, Boss Baby They have their mishaps like any big studio but yes, they do have some amazing flicks, and the fact that 2 of their newest movies (The Bad Guys /and/ Puss In Boots: The Last Wish) are so recently released is incredible Not to mention their older classics, like How to Train Your Dragon, Megamind, and Kung Fu Panda... They are a great studio overall

Since all of the movie clips are child-restricted, I just wanted to point out a detail I adore. When Puss loses his sword, he makes do with a stick. Later, after he's formed a friendship with Perrito and Kitty, he earns the Gatito blade from Softpaws. When he uses it to deflect Lobo’s attack, the blade is a symbolic representation of that friendship. Despite how inevitable Death is, the yearning he has for his friends helps him overcome that fear. It’s such a great piece of symbolism that isn’t harped on too much.
This film just has so many layers and little touches, it’s incredible. I also like how they subverted a lot of recent Disney tropes. For one it’s nice to have actual villains. It turns out you can tackle heavy and somewhat abstract issues like fear of your own mortality, but still have an actual antagonist to oppose the hero, and shockingly this helps drive the narrative. I mean, I liked Encanto, but I thought the story was the weakest aspect. It’s rather vague what the problem with the house is or what the solution is for most of the film, and with no actual antagonist the film just kind of meanders around without much focus. But by personifying death and having him chase after Puss it gives the characters an actual journey with clear obstacles to overcome. I also love what they did with Jack Horner. Recent Disney films have tended to have either nonexistent villains, or villains that are sympathetic or misunderstood, so it was refreshing to have a villain who was simply an unrepentant asshole. He’s so evil not only does Jimminy Cricket give up on him, but Perrito, who is optimistic, naive, and trusting to a fault, even he can tell that Jack Horner is a monster.
Yeah, they really outdid themselves with this one. There's plenty of those little touches all over the movie, and it shows how much the creators cared about the work.
In the extra scene of how Puss lost one of his lifes, he lost it by not accepting Softpaw's help, and in this scene he uses this little blade that she gave him like you wrote, that's so cool.

For me it's the fact he charges in with the sword in his non dominant hand. He's charged in not fearing death anymore, not being cautious or timid and when he realizes he quickly swaps to his dominant hand.

Man, I went through loops to try and save the original after it was taken down because I liked it so much, I'm so glad it's been reuploaded and can keep providing the views right to the creator. No other edit of this has quite scratched in just the right way like this one has. Perfect formula here and use of the vocals/muted sections reflecting how the music in-game works
One detail I don’t see anyone talk about is that death’s flames and his shadow or himself creates an eye in the zoom out shots so puss is literally in “The eye of death” and even during the battle we mostly see death around the center showing that death was still in control even with puss gaining an advantage.

The clearest comparisons have already been made, so here's mine: - Main character almost loses the fight of his life, before using a blade he recently acquired which represents his character arc, which turns the tide and allows him to win/survive The Murasama represents Raiden not just admitting to, but embracing his bloodlust. Roughly, at least. Meanwhile, the gatito knife represents Puss's connection to Kitty. There's a few things that could symbolize, but I won't go on about that If you listen close or find the soundtrack, you can hear Kitty's guitar sting play when Puss pulls out the knife

The clearest comparisons have already been made, so here's mine:
- Main character almost loses the fight of his life, before using a blade he recently acquired which represents his character arc, which turns the tide and allows him to win/survive
The Murasama represents Raiden not just admitting to, but embracing his bloodlust. Roughly, at least. Meanwhile, the gatito knife represents Puss's connection to Kitty. There's a few things that could symbolize, but I won't go on about that
If you listen close or find the soundtrack, you can hear Kitty's guitar sting play when Puss pulls out the knife
I just want to let everyone know that "Turning Red" (Disney) had a higher animation budget the "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" (Dreamworks). The animators are GOATed.
Disney sucks now.

I'm sure somebody already mentioned this and it's been said in other ways, but this soundtrack goes so well with this scene
The wolf originally went to collect Puss's last soul as a job and ended that adventure feeling outraged he lost the rematch. The wolf will be remembering this for awhile. This went from a job to a personal beef.
The music makes me realize something: this could be a fucking boss fight. We saw phase one, then when Puss did enough damage, Death entered Phase 2.
If this played during the movie I’d be 100% okay with it.
