I bought a 1992 Civic VX brand new in 1992 and still have it. It now has 645,000 miles and still looks and runs great. Still is my daily driver and lots of fun to own.
I found a civic that I purchased for 600$ with 77 thousand miles rusty in spots but original low mileage , little to put on the road and been driving amazing ever since
Si's and the later Integra type R's were kind of a given as a collector item, and a few survived. The VX was much less noteworthy at the time and folks were much less motivated to preserve them, not realizing that some of us would ultimately value them as equal to the high performance model
Believe it or not I have a 1992 VX just like the one you tested here. I bought it used in 1996 with 60k miles on it. The car now has 214k , and still runs great at 28 years old. I don't get 55 mpg like you did in your test; I average around 40-45. However, my mileage is skewed somewhat, since I have to use larger 175/70-13 tires instead of the original stock 165/70s. Very few brands make the OEM size now. The car lacks many modern amenities such as an automatic transmission,power steering.and windows and locks. It also doesn't have the myriad screens and electronics modern cars do (I have added a modern stereo system with subwoofer and Bluetooth so I can use my smartphone). On the positive side, there's far less to go wrong. Over the years I've replaced the struts and other parts as they've worn out, but basically it's just been oil changes, brakes, and tires. My red VX has been a bullet proof reliable old friend for 24 years and counting.
@@nickfeathers5090 Can you link me where to get this sensor? I've replaced it once in the time I've had the car. I always use the correct NGK spark plugs; once I tried some"advanced" Bosch plugs and the engine ran very strangely, so I know the advantage of using the correct parts.
If you haven't already, make sure you've replaced your PCV valve and you have cleaned up your electrical grounds in your engine bay. Unbolt them, wire brush them then reinstall.

Been a car guy my whole life. When I was in my teens, I didn't care about the difference between a Civic or a Geo Metro. My 1st car was a 1970 Dodge Dart, 4dr 225ci /6. Shortly after I got a 78 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 (400ci small block,TH400-trany, factory rated at 180hp). Family hated the Firebird so they got me a 85 Mercury Cougar 5.0 (140hp AOD) After going thru "the big three" US auto makers, I got a deal on a 93 Civic Vx hatch. It was my 1st Honda, bought in 2002 and Ive never looked back. 20 years later I'm on my 8th Honda and looking to collect more. Fun facts about the Vx hatchback: 55mpg was no fluke, it was thru great engineering. The 1.5 Vtec-E (E stood for Economy, it ran as a 12valve outside Vtec) made 92hp, 10 less HP than the non-Vtec 16valve 1.5 Dx base. It only came 5-speed, with the longest gears you will ever find in a civic. According to the owners manual, 2nd gear was good till 67mph, 3rd gear was 111mph. Vtec would "hit" at 2,500 rpm and redline was under 6k. Full acceleration from redline 2n'd to 3rd shift would still drop below 3k rpm.. The gears were really long and no torque at the bottom (Si gears were 58 in 2nd and 88mph in 3rd, at higher rpm too). That said, you only needed the first 3 gears when driving it hard as you will never get it out of 3rd. It was so light (no sunroof, no AC, manual steering, manual windows, no power anything, smaller brakes and 13" alloy wheels made by Enkei weighing only 7lbs each) It handled so well. No need to brake going into curves, you could take any turn full throttle simply by downshifting and driving out of it. You could merge on the freeway only using 2nd gear. My favorite was when just cruising at 70-80mph in 5th, it's perfect to downshift to 3rd and "race" to 100, a sweep spot in the power band and most other Hondas will need to shift to 4th early. I loved that car.. So much fun and +50mpg too !

My EG3 was stolen and was involved in an accident, the driver fled. The police thought it was me cos I woke up at lunchtime the next day and only then realised it had been stolen and reported it. The only thing that saved me was the person who the thief crashed into said the driver was a woman! 🤣

Watching this makes me miss my white 93 Honda Civic hatchback cx.its a 1.5L non vtec manual transmission.bought it back then high school days in 01 and sold it in 03.it was a cute beautiful car! Purchase it from a dealer in California for 7k with 50mil.took it to San Francisco, Sacramento,LA and alot more city's.it handles pretty well with no issues.runs like a champ.i miss my baby☹️☹️😢😥😟.
The 1992 EG Honda Civic was and still is the one that car thieves go for. I wanted one of these cars back in the day, but I do not like surprises when I walk outside my car ain't there. That car is easy interchangeable parts from 1992 all the way to 2000. I'm fan of a EF series Honda Civic, the Box rocks!
I bought a 92 Honda Civic VX and car was incredible. Bought it from a kid and the odometer said it had 113,000. Found out later someone rolled it back and actually had over 300,000. No regrets, the car was awesome and awesome on gas!
As a current VX owner, the key to the economy was the D15Z1 engine, and one off long geared trans. That is 95% of the economy. A normal car will run an air fuel ratio of about 13:1. The VX when it was at low load and low RPM, would run at 22.5:1, which is a massive difference. The problem is you overcombust fuel, which releases NOX, and the car would fail emissions testing, which is why lean burn was gone after the 1st gen Insight. Couple that with the VX’s extremely tall gearing, and the economy is awesome. 55mph is at 1500rpm. 70mph is at 2000ish rpm. If it had the power and revved to 7,000rpm, it’s top speed would technically be 212mph. Other bits: Zero sound deadening from the factory. Passenger mirror was an option Aluminum engine mounts No rear wiper No power steering No power windows AC was an option Rear bumper had a small diffuser to improve drag. Wheels were 13x5 and 9lbs each, with less drag(I have mine, but upgraded for traction). 2189lb curb weight I believe. That’s doesn’t mean much in terms of highway economy, but did help out on the city economy. Word of warning....it may do 0-60 in 9.6 seconds, which may be impressive but that’s mostly because you only need to shift once, as you reach 70mph in 2nd gear. It is REALLY slow when it is in anything but the “high” cam, which is the equivalent of low cams on the other models. I’ve hit 110mph. With VX tires, it might have a 115 in it. To get to that speed, you better have a 4 mile oval though. 70 to 80 is FOREVER. Still a fun car that I daily, haul a lot in, and drive spiritedly.
My first new car was a 1987 CRX Si. It loved to be driven in a spirited fashion, so I typically obliged. Yet the gas mileage still managed to exceed my expectations (and Honda's claims). Most amazing was that when I drove the CRX Si like a sane person, I was able to get just over 50 mpg from it out on the highway - not just once, but on several occasions. It was truly a great car.

Yep the new ones are huge boats with big pillars and without the rear view camera it would be hard to reverse. The civic was suppose to be a compact car not anymore.
These are sleepers. People have no idea anything can be high performanced if modded right. Because these civics are light, affordable, easy to work on, and have room under the hood, these make perfect tuner cars which are still popular till this day.
I had a 92 Civic DX sedan with an automatic. It was the first car I bought on my own. It was slow, but got over 40 mpg on the highway consistently. Very reliable too. Great memories!
Yep. It's even MORE impressive that that's a US gallon, I'm in the UK and that is the equivalent of 66MPG here! Even diesels are lucky to get that high these days!!
@@ZIGZAG12345 the way gas mileage is calculated then and now has changed for the formula because it takes the engine off the car and calculates the mpg in perfect condition without accounting for ac/power steering /power brakes and other features that drain power from the engine. the gas millage is closer to 38mpg us, I average with the car and its still low mileage and well maintained since new about 32mpg

The excellent Integras of the ‘90s owe a lot to this generation Honda Civic. The two cars shared basically the same platform. Although the Civic was a bit underpowered IMO, overall it truly punched above its weight. I’d buy one - even today.
I'd argue that this gen Civic, with the 5 speed was FAST for a 4 cylinder economy car in the early 90's. I mean remember we are just 5 to 7 years removed from 60-80hp carburated junk like the 4wd Tercel wagon(cool car but SLOW), Chevettes, 4 cylinder Mustangs that had the 1970's Pinto engine, 50hp diesel VW Rabbits. If you were trading in a car like that on a new 1992 Civic, it felt like a rocket ship and was just such a technological leap forward from those 80's crap cans.
@@Momo_8k -- Ha! Well, you weren't far off. To get technical (and as far I understand it), "DC" was the chassis code for the Integra hatchbacks. DC2 = GS-R/Type-R, and DC4 = LS/GS/RS. The car in my profile picture is my Integra sedan. The sedans used the "DB" designation, with DB7= LS/GS/RS and DB8 = GS-R sedan. I've thought about GS-R-swapping my Integra sedan since it has the ho-hum, non-VTEC engine, but the damn thing just won't quit. It doesn't even burn any oil. Maybe if it ever blows up I'll think about it, but at this rate I'll be waiting a while.

Seems like people who don't have any money intensely rationalizing over why an econobox is the ideal automobile. Found me an all stock 1995 DX coupe, no rust and 5 speed manual low miles and great body and original paint for 2k purchase it from a friend and plan on keeping this car forever if I can.. I am the second owner and will do tasteful modifications... Still has ac and runs and drives perfect.
A low drag coefficient certainly helped, but cars from this era were MUCH lighter and smaller than their current counterparts. If you want good fuel economy, weight reduction is what really helps.
Mgoblagulkablong - Drag reduction cannot be overlooked, but small cars in general are already aerodynamic and low to the ground. The modern Civic for example despite all of its powertrain tech advantages doesn’t get 55 mpg largely because it’s so much heavier.
I remember renting one for a family vacation and was instantly blown away. It felt leap years ahead of the Cavaliers and the Grand Ams we had previously rented. It felt tight, and had great pickup for getting on the highway. It was cool to look at too.
I had a Civic from that generation (95) that I drove 350,000 miles....with the ORIGINAL clutch. I then sold it to someone who put another 50,000 on it. Those cars were amazing.
Had that same DX model at 00:20. Same pearl green Mica color, same body style. Absolutely base model slow as hell with the 4 speed auto but got close to 40 mpg. My sister drove it for 5 years then I had it for 4. Sold it with over 210k miles and kept seeing it around south Austin for several years afterward. An ex girlfriend dented the front fender so I got a white fender for it and never painted it so it was distinctive. Best car I ever had. Super cheap to fix. Left me stranded once. Blew a $10 heater hose.
This is the best generation and because of that, also the hardest to find in un-butchered stock condition. This looks so much more modern than any detroit compact from 1992.

Now that these are pretty rare, it makes you appreciate the things we have now. I love older 90's cars but now's the time to find our next gems. There's lots of 2000's cars that are just as reliable, if not more due to timing chain use
1992 I was a school guy , when I saw this honda for 1st time I fell in love with that car , it got my dream . I got older , modern cars came on the roads but I still love this model , think it was the best model from honda that everybody wants it ❤😊❤😊

I have a 1995 model with a clean title restored and never crashed. 😍 B series motor almost 400 hp. But the exterior stock,only painted PPG material and full coilover suspensión. The car looks so great.😊😊
Gotta say I was never into Hondas, but I remember enjoying riding around in my sister’s civic of this generation. Memories right there. Now I own a 2019 Honda Insight Touring which I absolutely love. Fun, economical, classy, and kinda peppy.
Those hatch backs are lots of fun to play around with and easy to work on. Not to mention cheap on parts, repairs, and maintance as well. My friend owned one back in high school 7 years ago, and it was fun. He modded that thing, and had the inside gutted out. He drove that car mad hard when he performed it. But after 5 years of owning it, he ended up selling it because he needed a bigger car and couldn't afford to keep his hatch along with his newer car. It was alot of fun, but all good things come to an end at times.

My mom had the 4 door version while I was growing up, it was a cute car, my only complaints was that the A/C wasn't very powerful and the back seat leaned back a little too much. It ended up breaking down at 16 years of age a little before I was due to inherit it as a first car and it wasn't worth repairing. If it had been the hatchback version I would have been pretty disappointed about that.
Ive wanted an EG hatch for awhile now, with a B18C swap, possibly K20, and just a few simple Spoon parts. Nothing ricer, just a clean car for enjoyable cruises.
Not disagreeing at all there, but more work than necessary for just some reliable power to overtake on freeways or merging into one etc. I'm just wanting a nice cruising car to enjoy, and the sohc motors are so weak, great gas mileage but very limiting. If I wanted to include the occasional track day weekend then maybe a hybrid build swap

Great flashback moment. I had a 1992 Civic DX hatchback and loved this car. Only reason I got rid of it is at 180K miles, it got totaled. Paid $10K for the car new and 10 years later with 180K insurance valued it over $4K. Not bad.
I had a 1991 Honda Civic LX sedan....that little 93 HP thing drove really well...it was well-built, fun to drive and got killer MPG...bulletproof reliability....
My first car in 2000. A 92 DX hatch. I think it was only an 8 valve. It was a car you could get in and not have a worry in the world about reliability. The odometer just kept rolling and used no gas. Got it to 290k and was still mint. Always was worried someone would steal it during the early 2000s ricer crap. It met its end in 2004 when it hit a tree. Sure wish I had one again, but it will for sure probably be stolen these days.
I've given up looking for 90's hondas/acuras because of the tuner scene. In terms of theft, people claiming manuals are the "millenial anti-theft device" may be safe, but not if you have a 90's honda/acura
I own a 94 Civic Si hatchback in mint condition. Yellow paint with black racing wheels. We put a B20z in it and boosted it. It's hilarious how much faster it is than the original specs. Lowered on KYB struts and Tein springs, the proper way. Really fast car. RWD V8s can't hang on those curvy backroads.

bought a almost stock hatch with little to no rust and healthy underbody 130K km mileage for 442 dollars. paint was ugly and faided tho

Try replacing the O2 sensor with a real NTK 5 wire sensor for the VX. My VX has gotten 70+ mpg multiple times.

I turned 16 in 1992. Took my driving test in my aunts new 1992 Honda Accord. It was a great car.
I had a 93 DX hatchback 5 speed manual with 220k miles when I sold it. Sometimes I wish I still had that car. I want to believe it’s still out there helping people getting around and making them smile.
That red hatch was so base model it didn't even have a passenger mirror lmao!!
Watching this makes me miss my white 93 Honda Civic hatchback cx.its a 1.5L non vtec manual transmission.bought it back then high school days in 01 and sold it in 03.it was a cute beautiful car! Purchase it from a dealer in California for 7k with 50mil.took it to San Francisco, Sacramento,LA and alot more city's.it handles pretty well with no issues.runs like a champ.i miss my baby☹️☹️😢😥😟.
The 1992 EG Honda Civic was and still is the one that car thieves go for. I wanted one of these cars back in the day, but I do not like surprises when I walk outside my car ain't there. That car is easy interchangeable parts from 1992 all the way to 2000. I'm fan of a EF series Honda Civic, the Box rocks!
I bought a 92 Honda Civic VX and car was incredible. Bought it from a kid and the odometer said it had 113,000. Found out later someone rolled it back and actually had over 300,000. No regrets, the car was awesome and awesome on gas!

As a current VX owner, the key to the economy was the D15Z1 engine, and one off long geared trans. That is 95% of the economy.
A normal car will run an air fuel ratio of about 13:1. The VX when it was at low load and low RPM, would run at 22.5:1, which is a massive difference. The problem is you overcombust fuel, which releases NOX, and the car would fail emissions testing, which is why lean burn was gone after the 1st gen Insight.
Couple that with the VX’s extremely tall gearing, and the economy is awesome. 55mph is at 1500rpm. 70mph is at 2000ish rpm. If it had the power and revved to 7,000rpm, it’s top speed would technically be 212mph.
Other bits:
Zero sound deadening from the factory.
Passenger mirror was an option
Aluminum engine mounts
No rear wiper
No power steering
No power windows
AC was an option
Rear bumper had a small diffuser to improve drag.
Wheels were 13x5 and 9lbs each, with less drag(I have mine, but upgraded for traction).
2189lb curb weight I believe. That’s doesn’t mean much in terms of highway economy, but did help out on the city economy.
Word of warning....it may do 0-60 in 9.6 seconds, which may be impressive but that’s mostly because you only need to shift once, as you reach 70mph in 2nd gear. It is REALLY slow when it is in anything but the “high” cam, which is the equivalent of low cams on the other models. I’ve hit 110mph. With VX tires, it might have a 115 in it. To get to that speed, you better have a 4 mile oval though. 70 to 80 is FOREVER. Still a fun car that I daily, haul a lot in, and drive spiritedly.

My first new car was a 1987 CRX Si. It loved to be driven in a spirited fashion, so I typically obliged. Yet the gas mileage still managed to exceed my expectations (and Honda's claims). Most amazing was that when I drove the CRX Si like a sane person, I was able to get just over 50 mpg from it out on the highway - not just once, but on several occasions. It was truly a great car.

Yep the new ones are huge boats with big pillars and without the rear view camera it would be hard to reverse. The civic was suppose to be a compact car not anymore.

These are sleepers. People have no idea anything can be high performanced if modded right. Because these civics are light, affordable, easy to work on, and have room under the hood, these make perfect tuner cars which are still popular till this day.
I had a 92 Civic DX sedan with an automatic. It was the first car I bought on my own. It was slow, but got over 40 mpg on the highway consistently. Very reliable too. Great memories!

@@ZIGZAG12345 the way gas mileage is calculated then and now has changed for the formula because it takes the engine off the car and calculates the mpg in perfect condition without accounting for ac/power steering /power brakes and other features that drain power from the engine. the gas millage is closer to 38mpg us, I average with the car and its still low mileage and well maintained since new about 32mpg
I have a 94 VX. I’ve gotten over 70mpg highway in it multiple times. Lean burn engines work wonders.

The excellent Integras of the ‘90s owe a lot to this generation Honda Civic. The two cars shared basically the same platform. Although the Civic was a bit underpowered IMO, overall it truly punched above its weight. I’d buy one - even today.

I'd argue that this gen Civic, with the 5 speed was FAST for a 4 cylinder economy car in the early 90's. I mean remember we are just 5 to 7 years removed from 60-80hp carburated junk like the 4wd Tercel wagon(cool car but SLOW), Chevettes, 4 cylinder Mustangs that had the 1970's Pinto engine, 50hp diesel VW Rabbits. If you were trading in a car like that on a new 1992 Civic, it felt like a rocket ship and was just such a technological leap forward from those 80's crap cans.

@@Momo_8k -- Ha! Well, you weren't far off. To get technical (and as far I understand it), "DC" was the chassis code for the Integra hatchbacks. DC2 = GS-R/Type-R, and DC4 = LS/GS/RS.
The car in my profile picture is my Integra sedan. The sedans used the "DB" designation, with DB7= LS/GS/RS and DB8 = GS-R sedan.
I've thought about GS-R-swapping my Integra sedan since it has the ho-hum, non-VTEC engine, but the damn thing just won't quit. It doesn't even burn any oil. Maybe if it ever blows up I'll think about it, but at this rate I'll be waiting a while.

Found me an all stock 1995 DX coupe, no rust and 5 speed manual low miles and great body and original paint for 2k purchase it from a friend and plan on keeping this car forever if I can.. I am the second owner and will do tasteful modifications... Still has ac and runs and drives perfect.

55 mpg, thanks to low air drag, nowadays even small / compact cars have a much larger frontal area, I miss small low drag cars.

A low drag coefficient certainly helped, but cars from this era were MUCH lighter and smaller than their current counterparts. If you want good fuel economy, weight reduction is what really helps.

Mgoblagulkablong - Drag reduction cannot be overlooked, but small cars in general are already aerodynamic and low to the ground. The modern Civic for example despite all of its powertrain tech advantages doesn’t get 55 mpg largely because it’s so much heavier.

I remember renting one for a family vacation and was instantly blown away. It felt leap years ahead of the Cavaliers and the Grand Ams we had previously rented. It felt tight, and had great pickup for getting on the highway. It was cool to look at too.
I had a Civic from that generation (95) that I drove 350,000 miles....with the ORIGINAL clutch. I then sold it to someone who put another 50,000 on it. Those cars were amazing.

I've been waiting for this review to pop up for years now.
Had that same DX model at 00:20. Same pearl green Mica color, same body style. Absolutely base model slow as hell with the 4 speed auto but got close to 40 mpg. My sister drove it for 5 years then I had it for 4. Sold it with over 210k miles and kept seeing it around south Austin for several years afterward. An ex girlfriend dented the front fender so I got a white fender for it and never painted it so it was distinctive. Best car I ever had. Super cheap to fix. Left me stranded once. Blew a $10 heater hose.
I had this exact car and regret selling it till this day. Long live the EG!
This is the best generation and because of that, also the hardest to find in un-butchered stock condition. This looks so much more modern than any detroit compact from 1992.

Now that these are pretty rare, it makes you appreciate the things we have now. I love older 90's cars but now's the time to find our next gems. There's lots of 2000's cars that are just as reliable, if not more due to timing chain use
1992 I was a school guy , when I saw this honda for 1st time I fell in love with that car , it got my dream . I got older , modern cars came on the roads but I still love this model , think it was the best model from honda that everybody wants it ❤😊❤😊

Gotta say I was never into Hondas, but I remember enjoying riding around in my sister’s civic of this generation. Memories right there. Now I own a 2019 Honda Insight Touring which I absolutely love. Fun, economical, classy, and kinda peppy.
He left out the most important thing about the Civic, it’s reliability!
It was a new car at that moment, so they didn’t know about its reliability yet.

Those hatch backs are lots of fun to play around with and easy to work on. Not to mention cheap on parts, repairs, and maintance as well. My friend owned one back in high school 7 years ago, and it was fun. He modded that thing, and had the inside gutted out. He drove that car mad hard when he performed it. But after 5 years of owning it, he ended up selling it because he needed a bigger car and couldn't afford to keep his hatch along with his newer car. It was alot of fun, but all good things come to an end at times.

I miss my Honda mechanic days. Honda’s in the late 80, through all of 90’s were the best to work on.
My mom had the 4 door version while I was growing up, it was a cute car, my only complaints was that the A/C wasn't very powerful and the back seat leaned back a little too much. It ended up breaking down at 16 years of age a little before I was due to inherit it as a first car and it wasn't worth repairing. If it had been the hatchback version I would have been pretty disappointed about that.

Ive wanted an EG hatch for awhile now, with a B18C swap, possibly K20, and just a few simple Spoon parts. Nothing ricer, just a clean car for enjoyable cruises.
K20/K24 "hybrid" - possibly the best N/A 4 banger on this planet.
Not disagreeing at all there, but more work than necessary for just some reliable power to overtake on freeways or merging into one etc. I'm just wanting a nice cruising car to enjoy, and the sohc motors are so weak, great gas mileage but very limiting. If I wanted to include the occasional track day weekend then maybe a hybrid build swap

Great flashback moment. I had a 1992 Civic DX hatchback and loved this car. Only reason I got rid of it is at 180K miles, it got totaled.
Paid $10K for the car new and 10 years later with 180K insurance valued it over $4K. Not bad.

My first car in 2000. A 92 DX hatch. I think it was only an 8 valve. It was a car you could get in and not have a worry in the world about reliability. The odometer just kept rolling and used no gas. Got it to 290k and was still mint. Always was worried someone would steal it during the early 2000s ricer crap. It met its end in 2004 when it hit a tree. Sure wish I had one again, but it will for sure probably be stolen these days.
I've given up looking for 90's hondas/acuras because of the tuner scene. In terms of theft, people claiming manuals are the "millenial anti-theft device" may be safe, but not if you have a 90's honda/acura
They should bring these cars back and they should be around the same price
I own a 94 Civic Si hatchback in mint condition. Yellow paint with black racing wheels. We put a B20z in it and boosted it. It's hilarious how much faster it is than the original specs. Lowered on KYB struts and Tein springs, the proper way. Really fast car. RWD V8s can't hang on those curvy backroads.

You can still see several of them on the streets, and some in excellent shape. How many current cars can we say the same in 20 or 30 years?
They also have a huge fan base so they get rebuilt.
The vx hatch is beautiful and gets 55mpg. I'd buy it for a commuter in a heartbeat if it were sold today
