This is absolutely amazing! You got great attention to details and I also love that you try to incorporate some sort of story to your visual effects, great work!
@@SteveRamsdenRUclips NICE VIDEO but What a bummer Bro... Couldn't you just keep the camera static and add fake camera shake in editing... For me just adding a drifting effect and adding black bar and the video shakes like handheld camera fooling the audience...... I made it completely in Android but I can't upload it as I didn't do my face reveal yet...
Steve, another outstanding how-to! Thanks for making these. It goes to show it doesn't take a huge budget or fancy camera equipment to pull off some really fantastic VFX. All the best for 2022!
Nothing I can say to make my comment stand out...... But you are the best explainer and this shot is the #1 best thing I have seen on RUclips period. I do a lot of doubles and everyone know its split screen. So I really need to master this.
First time to comment. You really break it down in a clear and easy to follow flow and in a very short time!!! I usually don’t use after effects but your video made me want to give it a shot. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this.
Great stuff as always!!! Love the gravity trick for the camera. Really. One thing though, is the shadow of standing man on the back left wall. It's gone. So when the gunman walks between the light and standing man, the shadow shows up where there should already be a shadow (from standing man). 12:22 You can see the shadow disappear as you change the opacity. 7:03 I only mention it because it stood out to me, but as I said, LOVE the whole idea and love the low budget approach even more!!! Thanks Steve!!
Oh snap, just now found out you travelled to my country (PNG) back in 2010. Hope the experience was pleasant. Btw I really enjoy your tutorials, short, sweet and to the point, keep em coming.
That shoulder shadow was great! I actually think the second shadow would have looked much more realistic if it didn't move linearly. When the walking character moved in front of the lamp, his shadow should have swished across the standing character faster than the walking character was walking.
You’re right, the shadows sold it. I find that “undesirable” things like shadows or debris really takes off that cgi cleanliness. I’ve done similar fx using a cheap motorized slider that also pans but it’s cool to see even cheaper ways to do things. Also, I’ve used ae for about 5 minutes total but your explanation makes it feel pretty approachable. A lot of the processes translate really well from Resolve.
The camera trick is what I tried in the past but I didn't have a good slider, which, I guess, introduced inconsistent speed, so I could not get good results. This video tells me it's possible so I may try with a better slider someday!
One tip for roto. Don’t use a single spline but make each part of a limb it’s own spline. Especially in a shot like this where the torso merely sways. You can move all those splines at the same time and you only need to mildly correct the head spline. Also a difference key may have done the trick. Although the contrast for your jacket and background is minimal. So trial and error. I always try ways to avoid manual roto 😂 and when I do I use the multi spline approach so you get the least amount of points to adjust.
This is really cool if you don’t want to use a green screen but if you do it’s extremely easy to make a shot like that in blender by importing the video as a plane and then you can make it handheld
DAMN. Really impressive how you taught this method. I was searching for something like this to get an idea of how to clone myself dancing on a choreographed dance in-sync with the song as well as the other clones of myself, but not just two of me but maybe a group dance, like 5-6 of me. Anyway, thanks for this tutorial! Great job again.
Do you do Davinci tutorials as well? I would love to learn how to execute this using resolve. Big fan of your tutorials never the less, love the drama added.

Definitely, the best cloning video I've seen. Especially with the movement in front of the clone image.
Many thanks!

Yes shadows are a nightmare with this stuff haha!
@@SteveRamsdenRUclips You can pretend the standing guy is a ghost or some sort of creature that doesn't cast a shadow.
This is abaolutely mindblowing
You are a great teacher Sir, now i can start making movies from a low budget

Yes give it a go, also adding Warp Stabiliser to both shots before you edit might help as well to get rid of a few wobbles 👍
You are a genius!
Marvellous!! Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
5:10 For me it was The Mummy PT2. Well that was 2 different actors but the idea came to me when I saw that clip

Thanks :)
Great tutorial. Would be nice if you could add a bit of death of field. Focus pulling with the 2 actors would be great
There is a little difference in focus as the static guy is in focus the whole time and the moving guy isn't, but it's not super easy to see :)
