What are Spinosaurs Made of? An awesome look at the making of a 12-ton, thousand-horsepower dinosaur.
The Spinosaur was not only the biggest and heaviest animatronic ever built by the Stan Winston Studios, it was the fastest. "The Spino had to be faster, splashier and better than the T-Rex," stated engineer Tim Nordella. "The producers wanted something that was going to actually kill the T-Rex, in fact; so it had to be a more formidable character than the T-Rex was."
Don't miss this exclusive 2-part excerpt from the Stan Winston Studios - Behind the Scenes Documentary, and watch the creation of the Spinosaur from design and build to on-set dominance.

The amount of hard work and craftsmanship that went into this animatronic is absolutely amazing.
They build t-rex animatronic from 0 back in the 90s..more difficult than this one
All the JP franchise animatronics are incredible.
The should have used more of this stuff iin Jurassic World.
Exactly. Even if you ignore the fact that the animatronic dinosaurs have always added a greater sense of realism to the Jurassic Park franchise, directors saying "screw it, let's go full cgi" puts a lot of these guys out of work, when the end results don't even show for it.
The animatronic T-Rex breathing on Alan Grant made created more tension because it felt like the animal was really there.
Indominus throwing cars around or playing with the hamsterball, it all felt like cgi monster movie scenes without any sense of character tension.
Amy van Houten I totally agree. I love the movie, but no one could beat the film that made me love dinosaurs!
What you guys seem to overlook is big animatronics like this are very limited in terms of movement. Most of these scenes are only shot from the waist up and can only articulate their neck, jaws, and arms. They can't run around and do super actiony stunts. Besides considering that's what most of the scenes in JW demanded, animatronics simply wouldn't be of much use. In some more intimate scenes like where Hoskins was petting Delta, that would have been useful for a puppet but those type of scenes were so infrequent that big puppets wouldn't have been necessary. And keep in mind how expensive, time consuming, and difficult they are to handle. Movies are on tighter deadlines these days and CGI models are pretty much limitless in what you can do with them. I do think the puppets are more visceral and breathtaking on screen but you have to pull back to reality at some point and realize they're not practical for everything, despite what you want to think. Going CGI over practical isn't laziness, it's convenience and in many ways it's more suitable for deadlines and delivering the character and scenes in this age of cinema.
Yeah
Bret Buckley The Lost World built a nearly full-body Pachycephalosaurus for the total of 2 seconds. JW had little excuse to not use animatronics anytime they could, because, mind you, they already had animatronics built.
Oh my... I've been waiting for a BTS of SWS's Spinosaurus forever. Keep uploading more Jurassic Park behind the scenes! More! More! It still blows me away.
I love his design.
Ok. Just to help out with some fans here. In JP3 when the T-rex and Spiney have a fight, that is NOT animatronics (somebody commented on doing a behind the scenes with the fight. That isn't Stan's big work they only did animatronics). That fight scene was CGI animated, and Stan Winston projects on this movie was animatronics and texturing the dinosaurs. Not the entire animation sequence. Sorry for all those fans thinking "Where's the animatronic dino fight?!" There wont be one, an animatronic of that back then was just simply impossible, it's like asking them to build two robotic lions and make them fight. There is no way they could have made a fight without textures *such as foam* tear off or rip. That scene was purely CGI. Sorry.
Moon Staar actually part of it were indeed a real animatronic clash. It wrecked the 350 horsepower hydraulics in the T Rex model. Spinosaurus model was said to have 1000Hp
For your understanding without many words, that fight scean was design by using blue or green screen, camera movements and later merging them with models and after effects of jungle leaves, wind or such things.this is not hard work only skills and judgement of merge things in the background of the forest and light effects all inserted.but I think animatronix used as per camera shot as example before the fight you might noticed that or not that one's trex gave a warning roar to spinosaur to get lost, trick was this they used green screen where t Rex was animated but at the other side spinosaur wasn't, it's a robot and when trex grabs it's neck and that drawing on the ground scean cgi
they actually were planning on some animatronic fighting.
the Spino animatronic ripped the T. Rex animatronic head clean off.
They used a CGI Spino to bite an animatronic T-Rex in one of the shots
no it wasnt? there a whole story how they used half t rex animatronics and CGI in the full shot for the rest and on filming the spino was powerful enough to destroy all the mechanics it broke the hydraulic pipes and it leaked everywhere and the spino after the film soon got dismantled so it wasnt CGI fully for the shot
I get they had to made it smaller than normal. Spinosaurus was 50 ft long or so, it would've been a huge animatronic!
Probably that and/or scaling down everything else a little bit, too.
Nope more data puts the Spinosaurus at 43 ft long.

And yes , I’m replying and 8 year old comment
😂
In all seriousness, the best animatronic EVER made for a movie.
We think so too pacman5698, it certainly was one of the most ambitious. - David
Thanks. Because of this animatronic, and overall movie, Spino became my favorite dinosaur. The first toy I ever remember getting was a Re-Ak-Attack Spinosaurus for my 6th birthday. I always view JP3 as the last movie that went through the effort of combining organic and CGI effects before CGI was used FOR EVERYTHING.
pacman5698 Fingers crossed for JP4, it's possible we may have the NEXT GREAT FILM lets wait and see. Can't wait - Erich
I come from the future, and Jurassic World is awesome.
Mr. Fedora I can hardly agree. The Spinosaurus somehow feels nowhere near as alive as the original T-Rex or its successors in The Lost World, nor does it appear to move as fluidly. There's a lot more 'uncanny valley' present with this animatronic than the with the Rexes, if you will.
This is wonderful. Loved the movie loved this even more
Pretty amazing. Love these behind the scenes videos...
Juniveral, glad you love them! We love sharing them! -Maggie
You can make the 2021 Spinosaurus reconstruction...
I want to to do this stuff. I'm almost 17, and would kill for these opportunities
Beautiful Oddity that would be amazing
V N I would also kill for this opportunity
You could make this small scale if you get 2 part milliput epoxy putty, but you need some practice though.
I'm curious to know what your doing now considering how practical effects have been treated in the past 5 years.
Hollywood is a dying cesspool. DIY
JP4 is officially "on hold" but we probably couldn't discuss it anyway. - David
Wow looking back at this year's later lmao

yes yes yes yes I was waiting so long for this!
Been waiting for this...
I've already started on the body , Thanks for the inspiration
cant wait the fourth jp thank you for the good times growing up
It really means a lot coming from one of the people from the studio that created that little spark of imagination when I first saw the movie, That was what started my obsession with dinosaurs and sculpting, Thank you for everything
This is soooo coool !
very nice
Thanks a lot, guys!...ad more!!! :-D
I wish I could own a small scale spino model by these gets, there really good at this type of thing.
I'm loving this! As a film buff, I LIVE for BTS! I'm also a big "Jurassic Park" fan. Stan Winston Studio, I hope you guys are doing more practical dinosaur effects on "Jurassic Park 4." Are you?
very cool
This is 1 of my favorite dinosaurs
Awesome :)
Amazing.
Un lavoro impressionante ! Incredibile ! Grandi Artigiani !
I love these , They are amazing, I once tried to make my own dinosaur but my sister broke it accidentally
So, what do you guys do with the maquettes you make?
This is so awesome. I'm looking into going into the field of special effects. Any recommendations as to what I should look at first?
N30 Pulse Definitely check out our website - www.stanwinstonschool.com - our variety of webcourses should give you an idea about the different fields that are included in an interest in special effects. Whether you're a sculptor, painter, digital artist, mold-maker, makeup artist or animatronics expert, you should be able to find something to help you learn more.
Also check out our interviews with various artists on our RUclips channel and hear their stories about how they got started. Most importantly, get your hands dirty, get creative and practice, practice, practice. Good luck! -Maggie
Is it possible to get a casting of the head only? As seen at 4:22
This was about the era CGI was taking over and shitting on these skilled practical people.
+M.Shyam Ganeesh anyway I love animatronics
If it wasn't for Phil Tippett and his go-motion models, the CG dinosaurs wouldn't look as spectacular as they are.
2:40 Ah! It's a Spinosaurus with horse teeth! Thanks guys! Now I have something to *not* sleep on tonight.
Were the teeth sculpted from clay or xps foam?
spinosaurus should be bigger than the t-rex thou
John Van Hoven by five feet
Nope its not it had short legs ha losers
Motun Turk it does
Lol getting racist over dinosaur fights that never happened
But trex would win anyways
The first time watching Jurassic Park 3, When the Spinosaurus snapped poor rexy's head, I've started loving the Spinosaurus ever since. I use to be a rex fan, still kinda am, but I think spinosaurus is awesome, to say the least.
The same thing happened to me sorta haha. I was like 3 or so when I saw the movie so when I saw this weird dinosaur that I've never seen before kill the "king of the dinosaurs" it made me a huge fan of it.
Have to say tho, the Spino is now thought to be a semi-aquatic fish-eater, and only about 4-6 tonnes in size compared to the now confidently predicted 9-10 tonne, car crushing tyrannosaurus.
@@malligrub it's still an Apex predator, and btw the quadraped theory is no longer accepted, as it's arms would be crushed by the weight of they were that small
Truly epic!!!!
*****, If you like this, you'll LOVE our #JurassicPark #behindthescenes playlist --> bit.ly/ZgI4ND. -Matt
Actually, +Moon Staar you're not watching the scene close enough. You'll find a few amazing puppet shots if you look at it again. But you're right, the majority of the shots in the sequence are CGI. -Matt
How could you people do this to me? I was supposed to be the KING of the dinosaurs, not some big crocodile with some flimsy and ugly looking sail on its back.
Tyrannosaurus Rex Evolution happens!! But you still my favorite
Tyrannosaurus Rex ur ugly all u got is a bite
Tyrannosaurus Rex life , find a way .
Wasnt the spino 17 meters long?
I remember I found the spinosaurus as a trex killer on September 29 2012 on Google from u.
good to know that it exists
using the same paper food cups that are on the table food table in JP1 when Ellie is talking to hammond and says the ice cream is good. my super market here use to have those cups for soup in the deli in the early 90s same patterns now I wish I would have kept one... they vanished off the earth a while back.
they show up here at about 2:54 They known to me as the Jurassic Park food cups.
If I ever work here. All I want instead of a pay check, is a spinosaurus tooth.
freakin amazing.... o.O
the funny thing that the animatronic weight double the actual animal.
Diego, Well it's time to make another dinosaur! Just make sure you don't let your sister anywhere near it. -Matt
As much as I dislike the 3rd movie & hate how they portrayed the Spinosaurus with a passion, I can really appreciate the work and the skill that went into this. Really interesting video.
hey stan why didnt you put a crest on spino?
Wow. These videos are more popular than most of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit videos. More subscribers, too. Not just anyone can "body paint" a dino.
Well, you can see girls in swimsuits anywhere. How often can you see full-size dinosaurs. - David
Not very often. :D Maybe every 65 million years or so.
Roger Abramson what about birds XD.
I heard about a 4th film. I was wandering if you guys were doing the dinosaurs for that movie?
Yet another reason why you should not hate Jurassic Park 3 if you look how much work that they have to do to sit this movie Up
They're so regal and terrifying. They were sessions characters in the film. Totally different kind of menace in contrast to the Raptors and the Spinosaurus.
Can you make a behind the scenes of
the spinosaurus vs trex battle
so what happens to these after the movies?
I miss Stan Winston.
I always wanted to ask what exactly happens with those wonderful animatronics and models of clay after the movie is finished? Is there a museum or something? :)
museum/Universal park
That is a cool Spinosaurus (cough cough *Oxalaia).
were did these all end up
Hey can you make any comment on jurassic park 4 as in is it still goin to happen and are the dinosaurs being made or have been made ????
Where is the spinosaurs animatronic now ?
good to see it wasnt all CGI! got more respect to the movie now
T rex fans also disliked the video becaue they hate this dino
0:36 what is that meant to be on shelf (and i'm not talking about the ape)
It is the Satan puppet head from the movie End of Days. - Adrienn
What happens to these things after they are done being used?
***** It depends on the contract with the studio that make and produce the movie, in most of the cases, they goes back on display at the FX house that build them as well as in hands of private collectors, museums, etc. - Dimitar
Stan Winston School Can people rent or buy them? (not this one like a smaller thing like raptors)
***** It's up to the owner but the truth is that they are very damageable, so I think the answer is no. But sometimes you can find some props on the internet, but they are rare and very expensive. - Balázs
THE AMOUNT OF THOUSANDS OF FANS loved the T-REX
They only picked Spino because, yes it was bigger, but they also felt that the audience wouldn't be able to tell a T-rex from a Giganotosaurus or Carcharodontosaurus....
Not a good movie, but you still gotta love the design they gave for spinosaurus. Too cool
Not counting man hours how much does it cost to make these models from 1/5 scale to full movie size animatronic? 20 to 50 K?
how much does one of these cost?
This means something
Who's watching this 2021?
and this is less expensive than CG .... woooow almost unreal
New skeleton finds of Spinosaurs show that it had significantly shorter legs and was likely quadri-bid and it's build is ideal for it swimming in water supporting the theory it's a fish eater like the Baryonx. Look at this video and look at the new skeleton and you'll be amazed.
lol
June 22, 2015
This movie would have probably done a lot better if they hadn`t had it beat the crap out of t.rex, and just shown how much bigger than t.rex it was. they could of had a scene of it intimidating t.rex, but people weren`t ready to see rexy die yet. Plus they made it look too powerful, like a walking 65ft pliosaur or something. They could have used the idea that spino hunted small animals a lot, thus making it focus on humans, rather than just chasing them around for the hell of it. Looks pretty menacing too. T.rex looks like a walking maul, but spino looks like a sword.
Fun fact spino had short legs
Black #Savage Kid #CX #2TD We still don't even know that. No one knows what the hell the spinosaurus looks like. There isn't a complete skeleton. Just bits and pieces.
Cameron Isom I agree, all of the representations we have of it are mostly made up of Baryonx, Suchomimus, etc.
(I suck at spelling dino names so please excuse that)
i hope u guys get to work in new jurrasic park movie
All throughout watching this and the T-Rex videos, I was totally expecting someone to try and use the animatronic to pick someone up with its jaws. Ah, childish me.
👏
so , the spinosaurus is the biggest animatronic ever build ?
No
kopfjager68 i mean by stan winston
oh idk then
Hope we can get an accurate spino in the next movie
Spino had short legs
It was the biggest carnivore I'm pretty sure
Special Fex Haha, no. If we see anything close to accurate in a jurassic park movie it would be because someone important is being held hostage in hollywood.
Unlikely and unnecessary we haven't seen spino on screen for 17 would be a buzzkill to not bring back the original design. Consistency is a thing
What do they do with this stuff when they're done using it to film
Look st the size of that
the difference is the time really.
god i love dinosaurs
I think that the Spinosaurus is the most coolest dinosaur next to the Tyranosaurus Rex and the Alasaurus
Its just how it looks with its sail and that crocodile like head
Spino had short legs fact
Nope, that's an outdated theory
I take 5
The more you know :)
me fan in jurassic park 3
Kate Winslet @ 4:45
Everyone loves a little Kate, River Bevis. - David
ok
No comment at this time. Sorry... -Matt
Not yet.
CGI never made he Dino’s look as good for some reason like cgi is just way to polished
my
Too bad the legs of this monster have been recently discovered to be super short. Making this beast to walk on all 4 limbs on occasions.
Yeah, sadly it ruins the total badassness of this dino.
TH3JB0DD3N3RG0N please, it runs away from a little fire.
Well, it's just a model. They havent actually found the legs of a spino. However, they assume it had short legs based on other spinos.
+fleetcr fleetcr A BIG FIRE AND IT'S A FIRE
The more we learn about Spinosaurus the worse this representation becomes. It wasn't just a Trex with a sail. It had much smaller back legs (aquatic adaptation) and would have been horribly our if sorts on land.
Spinosaurus THAT HATE TO GO TO HELL
I LOVE MY T-REX DINOSAUR MY FAVORITE IS COOL AND IS THE REAL KING
You mean t rex that thing go to hell you love spino as your favorite dinosaur
Wait, don't you need to just animate a real looking spino, not completely build 1?
cgi is shi,t cant beat the models these guys built
This was before cgi
a-klotz LP No. They used cgi for much of this movie, but animatronics was more common. Filmmakers nowadays became lazy.
a-klotz LP No, this was before cgi was more practical. It was actually easier to use real life animatronics and then fall back on cgi for the impossible stuff, since cgi took ages to perfect and render. Kinda funny how cgi is overused now if you think about it.
no, there was cgi back then and and it was used in this film (like in the fight scene of spinosaurus vs trex) but it wasn't used much since it was trashy so they used a mix of practical and cgi effects
