In 10th grade a friend turned me on to these guys. This was the first song I heard. The guitar intro alone was crushing. I’ll be 47 yrs old in a few days and this was truly life changing for me
R-I-P Tracy pew and Roland Howard....I was seventeen when i was a part time roadie with "Bauhaus" back then....I did not know tracy or roland very well but i can remember playing football with a sponge ball at the lyceum London with members from bauhaus and "The birthday party" in 1981...I knew the members of "Bauhaus" better....It was great though to see them play at quite a few gigs...I still like "The birthday party". It brings back memories listening to this of the gigs....Was very happy to be part of those years when two of my favorite bands toured together...I am still in contact with some members from both bands...
The human thing really resonates with me. When I listen to The Birthday Party, I often think about humanness, and how happy I am to be human, and how much I appreciate the good parts of being human. It's sweet and cute that us little animals called "humans" made fantastic art - something we invented for ourselves! And other animals will invent their own art, too, and that will be precious to them. We are ridiculously more achieving than the other animals of Earth, but we are still just........... litle creachers. Thaste It . We Canot change this.
My friends and I followed Nick Cave and the Boys Next Door around Melbourne Pubs back many moons ago. I regularly revisit this music and even at my young age of 61 it still brings the same spine-chilling joy it brought to me as it did in my teenage years! Thanks popesblood for sharing.
When trying to describe this song, you realize how odd it is that the words "Insane, brutal, abrasive, hilarious and beautiful" all apply to this one tune.
Magnificent. I put this on whilst painting the bedroom, my good lady ran in and spat "what is this racket? get it off"...im still laughing, never finished the bedroom.
I'm a Melbourne son of a single mother, who in turn was a convent product. I purchased this on a trip to Sydney (Parramatta) circa 81-82. I already owned Prayers on Fire. But this EP 45! Wow. To think you could buy it for $2 in a bargain bin. Crazy. The Hair shirt, The birthday party, it's a samarie sword woof, woof, and this! Unbelievable @$2 it's criminal. Don't despair, I turned on dozens to THEIR charm's. In fact Cave owes ME lol. I'm glad. They all helped save my life. I just knew there on I was not a freak. I had like minded people to comfort me. Even if it was on vinyl. No judgement, no discrimination. You liked, you bought. God Bless all of em. I mean that from the bottom of my liver.
The Birthday Party and PiL, two of the most influential bands of rock music. Post punk, shoegaze, new wave, indie bands all owe them a debt of gratitude
This is the first song I like to start with for the people who don't know Cave and than once their faces fall in horror I play Red right hand and others they would likely know lol Quite a funny mix of emotions they get 😂 HEE HAAH HEE HAAA
actually this is first on the 1980 album "the birthday party" (first release was a boys next door album but all later versions the band credit is "the birthday party"). I still have my original issue missing link copy ;-)
popesblood: Thank you so much for posting this. It's such a gorgeous, terrifying song. And I *love* the pictures you found to go with the song, especially the one at 1:00. Nick looks so young and cute I can't believe it! Rowland does too.
This song was released in 1980... in listening to the first minute or so (esp between the :30-:48 marks), you can hear where Prince got his inspiration for the feedback-laced intro to the song "Computer Blue", and also in the crossover fade between the songs "Computer Blue" and "Darling Nikki" on the album "Purple Rain" (released 4 years after this song) -- it's pretty unmistakable.
Fender Jaguar, probably a Fender Twin Reverb, although he may have switched to Music Man Amps later. Supposedly he used an MXR Distortion +. Good luck RSH was something else

A roadie for the fathers of gothic rock themselves? Damn.
all these quotations marks make me think you kiddin
@@LuisSanchez-yn3si exactly, why would you put quotes around “bauhaus”??
Maybe it was a bauhaus cover band 😄
Did I meet you, at New York Dolls gig, Roisin Dubh, in Galway city?
@@LuisSanchez-yn3si NO!
This. I cant describe why this is so great. But it is.
So glad this song exists, that humans actually made it, and it can never be taken away from us.

When you read this comment out loud it sounds written by Ricky Gervais lol
This song surely must have inspired many bands like Godflesh and many more ☺️🥰☺️🥰

I cringe reading back on this, but it's so memorable. Oh well
@@wespaul9345 It's ok Wes, we understand what you mean
I'm late to this party but I totally relate..
RSH’s almost symphonic feedback on the intro sounds like he’s using his Jaguar to scry on John Dee’s obsidian ‘black mirror’
Rowland's funeral with preist with heavy heavy incence burners and this guitar track loud as his coffin went out, great send off at St Kidla

Nick Cave - was dark, mostly-unwise warlock, now semi-wise wizard.
Rowland - some strange sonic creature
and both were human
