A lot of French descendants in Louisiana (Cajuns who were expelled from France during the Great Expulsion from their homeland during the French and British hostilities prior to the Seven Years' War (1756 to 1763).). French colonists also settled in lower Louisiana since the 17th century. Strong french cultural and cuisine influences have been passed from one generation to the next. I tell people all the time that Louisiana is a country not a state. The french influence is even rooted in our laws which are derived form the Napoleonic Code. It is the only state in America that operates under the Napoleonic Code. Louisiana was named after King Louis XIV when the land was claimed for France in 1862. Louisiana, especially southern Louisiana became a melting pot of different cultures with the influx of Germans and Italians. A lot of GOOD food dishes came from that "melting pot" and it is the reason food is the crown jewel at most gatherings and it's what keeps families coming together and strengthening family ties. We live by the creed...GOD first, then Family and Country. I am sure you see that reflected in all his songs.

It’s pretty nice to read your heartwarming comment because after all the prejudiced depictions that I heard about so called « red necks », I ended up thinking (though deep down inside I was suspecting this assertion may not be completely true) that a foreigner should avoid the American countryside and its residents ! I have never been to America but you really make me feel like taking the backroads (to quote some country songs’ lyrics x) and meeting people !
