    Would the Process for recrystallization be the same if I used 91% isopropanol? Is it necessary to neutralize it and if so is it still the same process but let's say instead of Acetone I used 91% isopropanol, because I've found with 91% isopropanol It creates a sponge that can be easily broken into a fine powder

    What is the solubility of ETN in acetone, at 50C and 0C, for example? I've searched and searched and found nothing specific. Lots of good info with respect to PETN and acetone, but nothing quantitative for ETN that I've been able to find: just qualitative statements like 'more soluble in acetone than in methanol'.

    • @darianballard2074
      @darianballard2074  6 месяцев назад +1

      I really can't tell you. I couldn't find any good charts on that either, all i do is slowly add acetone till all the ETN has dissolved and use as little as possible. I normally don't bother heating ETN when doing this but it can be done so long as its kept under the boiling point of the acetone or reflux is used. Note only heat in a hot water bath or it could explode. I wouldn't even let the water bath come to a boil. It doesn't decompose/explode till around 160C but once it gets over 61c it becomes very unstable and dangerous. Over the melting point of 61C/142f its 5 times more sensitive than TATP.

    Hey man I love the video but I there were some things that scared me in the video. You aren't supposed to be vaccuum filtering explosives and you also have a large amount of it just chilling there. When you were scraping the glass with the thermometer without any type of protection at all I was really concerned. I know it's a secondary but man if it confines itself and manages to detonate you are going to be one dead man. I don't know if I'm over exaggerating but I made ETN before but I stayed below 2 grams and when I was handling it I was wearing thick ass leather gloves, goggles (I need a face shield), and thick clothes. Like I said I don't know if I'm overreacting but with a sensitivity of 2 Nm it's far from insensitive. Stay safe.

    • @ArtificialEquestrian
      @ArtificialEquestrian Год назад

      You should dissolve 100g of Sodium bicarbonate in 1 liter of distilled water to make a roughly 10% acidity neutralization soda solution. By the way, MeOH and EtOH are better for recrystallization of ETN than Acetone or Butanone. Ketones are not ideal solvents for completely strategic recrystallization of nitrate esters such as ETN, they are too retaining and also produce large sensitive crystals most of the time when used like seen here in this video. Low molecular weight alcohols are the best solvents for recrystallization of ETN and nitrate esters above it in molecular weight, as they are less harsh/hard solvents than the ketones and also engender the development of more stabilized and uniform crystalline structures, as well as microcrystalline precipitates that create higher density final products if you choose to make a plasticized plastic explosive with your ETN.

      ETN is made from the nitration of the linear aliphatic sugar alcohol polyol Erythritol, whereas PETN is made from the branched aliphatic polyol Pentaerythritol (in this context the prefix ‘penta’ is denoting the fact that five carbon atoms are present). Like Nitroglycerin, and also the higher molecular weight non-branched polyols and cyclopolyols above it, ETN has a positive oxygen balance. When ETN combusts, specifically, it releases one molecule of O2 for every 2 molecules of Erythritol tetranitrate. PETN, like TNT and RDX for example, has a negative oxygen balance; This means that it is deficient in oxygen and the corresponding result is the fact that portions of its molecule will go suboxidized or unoxidized during combustion. PETN is not nearly as oxygen balanced negative as TNT or RDX however. One can imagine for simplicity of thought that the central quaternary carbon atom in PETN’s Neopentane skeleton goes fully unoxidized in a perfect world, when in reality, it is predominantly oxidized partially to CO, ~Carbon monoxide~ at the expense of one of the “Methylene nitrate” group’s carbon atoms that would otherwise go fully oxidized itself to CO2. Therefore, for every single molecule of Pentaerythritol tetranitrate, its full combustion is deficient by one molecule of O2.
      You posted this question 10 months ago at the time of me writing this. I therefore assume you are aware of this information already. That being said, I still wanted to post this here for the record and for future reference by others possibly analyzing this comments section who may not be fully aware of this specific knowledge in regards to the technical differences between ETN and its ‘bigger brother’ PETN.

    Off Topic.. Could you do a video on double displacement (NON anode/cathode) of making potassium chlorate(KCLO3) from Bleach Sodium Hypochlorite. The question that puzzles me is about the yield. Normal bleach contains about 5% sodium hypochlorite. What would be the best ratio of Potassium Chloride to Sodium Hypochlorite = best yield? • @darianballard2074

      I may make a video on it. First you must boil the sodium hypochlorite and that will brake it down into sodium chlorate, sodium chloride and water. Then you would do the dd reaction with the potassium chloride. You would likely only get 1/2 the chlorate out as the hypochlorite you started with.

      Do not employ a ketone solvent. Use small molecular weight alcohols like Wood spirit (Methanol, MeOH) or denatured Ethyl alcohol ~Ethanol~ (DeOH® [EtOH w/ MeOH]) and dissolve 8-10g of ETN per 80ml of alcoholic solvent at a temperature[🌡️] of 40°C, then either shock-cool the solution in a freezer set to -20--30°C or by slowly adding in ice-cold distilled water via dripping into the solution until you know all the ETN has crashed out. Both of these methods yield very fine talcum-like microprecipitates with unparalleled performance in PBX compositions. Of course, this is not limited to ETN. It also works much the same way with PETN, including the other higher molecular weight nitrate esters of the assorted polyols.

In regards to DIBUTYL PHTHALATE, it is an excellent general purpose plasticizer despite its smaller molecular weight when compared to Diethylhexyl phthalate, and works very good to keep your plastic explosive malleable and soft, even without a strategic free-radical eliminating antioxidant present, like Diphenylamine or p-Nitroaniline.
