Did Caitlin Clark deserve a spot on Team USA's roster for Paris?
Caitlin Clark deserves placement on the USA Olympc team based on precedent as well as her unprecedented popularity. Caitlin Clark deserves to join Diana Taurasi (2004), Candace Parker (2008) & Breanna Stewart (2016) who were WNBA top draft picks selected for the USA Women's Olympic Team. Caitlin is the WNBA Rookie of the Month who reached 200 PTS, 75 AST & 60 REB faster than any player in history. Caitlin achieved this while being defended more closely than any other player and being blitzed more than any team. Caitlin has proven her marketing impact by causing historic rises in attendance, viewership and sales in the NCAA and WNBA.
Simply put, No she didn't
Of course! She is the Face rn like it or not
Complaint about the coverage of this story and then asking the above question. Perfect.
💯 yes, CC should have been on the USA roster. Let’s be honest, the product of women’s bball has been hot trash. Without CC, many would rather watch “grass grow” and/or “paint dry.
I always love what a nuanced *and actually informed* of an opinion Nick has, so refreshing. My only issue is just with the two women who have not played all season who were chosen
Nick, her being on the team is the difference between the game being on ESPN and the game being on ESPN3
It’s the Olympics which is on NBC and literally not affected at all by her appearance 🤡
Yep. Viewership should determine who plays and who doesn't. Good point.
@@truthbearer7891let’s word it differently - the difference is millions watching, or dozens watching.
@@El_Bueno It’s the Olympics literally 10 million tune in to watch them play in the last Olympics 🤡
We need to also think about the impact on players and not just money. I think Caitlin would want to be picked based on her merit and not because of marketing. Sitting her on the bench, which is likely to happen, aint gonna make someone like her feel good knowing that she's a pawn.
As a fan from UK going to the Olympics this is the dumbest move they could have made. Whole of Europe would have watched team USA just because of her.
Anthony Edwards is the Mens USA Team's marketing pick.
AE had a great season and playoffs until the Mavs.
Dude, Anthony Edwards was really good this year. Kinda carried the Wolves. Dont get your take.
Don't complain about your attendance or money.
These Caitlin Clark cult members are ridiculous...Its not about basketball with them
It's called having fans for once. That's what fans do. They wanted more revenue, and this is how you get it. Polarizing people with polarizing fan bases. It's not just all lovey-dovey
Like rest wnba players were making wnba profit? Wnba sucks without caitlin
In answer to the pinned question, NO! There are better players the rightfully could claim a spot on the team. However..............Caitlin is accomplished enough that her selection would not harm the team's chances, and it would rally and excite the country (with her popularity) in a way that the current 12 will not. Do we absolutely need the 12 most skilled players to win, or would it be a greater victory for our National Team to include someone that will bring far more attention (and national pride???) to the other 11 in the Olympics?
Neither approach is a "snub" to Caitlin, or to any other player. It's just what you feel is the priority here.
Like the way you put it even though believe Caitlin deserves a spot based on precedent as well as popularity.
Good call Nick, we understand who the Vast majority of her supporters truly are & how they think💯
And what color caps they wear.
I totally disagree on the visuals. Imagine little girls see her in the Olymic Parade, that would be magical, I mean effff everybody's arguments, lets do it for the kids. I was seven years old in 92 when TEAM USA in men's basketball happened, and it is part of my core memories as a child and I am from the Philippines! You need to think about globally.
So kids can only be inspired by a YT girl from Iowa on the Olympic stage? 🤔
All the ladies would be inspiring.
Meanwhile, Caitlin Clark plays ball, behaves like a WNBA ambassador, signs kid’s jerseys and works on improving her skills as much as she can under the circumstances of team, coach, schedule and noise.
I think something that is missing from this conversation is that everyone likes Caitlyn Clark? She is not a politician. She is not anything that you media people try to project onto her. She is talented. She always speaks kindly about the people she plays with and she loves basketball. Those are the true statements about Clark. Everything else is noise!!
What has not been discussed and what could cause a lot of the noise to quiet down is if the WNBA would embrace her. If the leadership like a Diana T. and Brianna Stewart were to say, “we are for this kid and we see with our own eyes the fan base that she has brought, and we acknowledge her talent , we would love to have her on the USA team because she is a great ambassador for our country!”
That is what a leader does who cares about the WMBA.
They’ve already done that, you people want them to turn down their competitiveness and let this girl just win and have it easy as if this isn’t a professional sport in which everybody get paid to play at the end of the day.
Its not complicated, the 12 women only have 7 practices before the Olympics, the international players roster have played together for months. The u.s. guards have played together, 4 aces, 3 pheonix and 2 ny liberty guards, given 7 practices for the Olympic CC hasn't played with them and has little time to gain the knowledge. They want players that have played together before.
The NBA needs to rethink its financial support of the WNBA.
Or if the WNBA is committed to the antagonistic position that it doesn’t need Caitlin Clark or people are turning in to watch other players, then give the NBA’s money back and stand on your own.
There is no other business that could survive never making a profit for a quarter century. Then when that company is on the cusp of a Cash cow, it quashes the new financial opportunity and says they will just keep doing what they are doing. That’s insanity.
Beautiful, thoughtful, intelligent commentary--as always.
Caitlin Clark would have been one of the centrepiece of NBC’s coverage. It would have been TV spots, her at events, just being a brand ambassador for the USA. It’s not just about her playing in the games.
People would have complained that she’s not playing . It’s a lose lose game .
@@niecyxTM whats the point? People are complaining NOW about her not playing in the olympics. Complaining, probably even more now, than if she was on the team. So, the "complaining" aspect doesn't make sense.
People will always complain, but the difference is more people would have cared about USA women's basketball if she was on the team. It would have made a difference, here in Europe. It would have been exciting for us to report 1st hand on the new woman's Bball player that's always in the news.
Now, it's just the same old story of little interest in them playing in the olympics.
She wouldn't have been the centerpiece of NBC coverage they are gonna be on usa tv, not nbc. Also, NBC nightly coverage is swimming, gymnastics and track and field. It wouldn't boost ratings as much as you wanted.
@@jimmyjames24 winning GOLD is the goal . I believe they are going to do that . Caitlin brings alor of good, but her fans are not wnba fans . She would have been the bag girl and that’s not fair to her.
I’m a huge CC fan! I get the reasons to include her and the reasons not to include her. But if we are going with the best 12 and including the alternate players who could be most needed, i.e. a point guard given Gray’s injury, then Ogunbowale should be the alternate. In addition to her stats and coming into her prime as a player, she is first generation American success and excellence! It’s a great story that is reason for American pride!
At this point, if CC was to be asked to join the US Team I hope she turns it down. As a CC fan, this team is way too toxic to want to be apart of!
Nick why always choose to see one side? Call out jemele for saying Caitlin's popularity is just cause of being white.
I was a catlin clark fan , until i noticed her fans being POLITICAL
I think that most of Caitlin's fans aren't actually fans of women's basketball, which is part of the problem. I don't agree with everything Nick said, but that's an excellent take all around.
Yes and the 1st pick in 2012/2020 should’ve gone too. Appears with elevation of the womens game the vets/coaches are shutting the door on providing valuable leadership experience and development along with marketability of younger players through the olympics. DTs sixth olympic appearance record means little if the game is done entertaining a pathway to achieve that ever again.
the Olympics is to grow the game "INTERNATIONALLY" the womens game is way more established internationally than in America, alot of the women in the W are way more famous over seas, DT has won over 13 championships playing over seas and CC name doesnt mean much internationally. Having her on the team means alot to America it doesn't mean anything internationally and thats why shes not on it
Really appreciate the conversation here. I what to believer the Coach's take. Hopefully, it gets straightened out;
YES....
One key item in USA Basketball's mission statement is "Its mission is to promote, grow, and elevate the game of basketball." Women's basketball is at a critical moment in time with its best and most popular female ambassador they have ever had.
Dream team took Bird and Magic who were essentially retired and not top 12 to the Olympics because they didn't need them to win games and their inclusion would popularize the sport immensely. And that's why the men never had to beg for viewers or complain about being under compensated.
as someone who has be watching the W since 1999 thats almost true, for one its to grow the game internationally. the nba needed help growing the game internationally back then, the one thing people forget is the womens game is way more established internationally than in America with the W. alot of these girls are way more famous overseas than in America, DT is a Superstar internationally and has won over 10 championships playing over seas. CC has never played internationally, her name means nothing basketball wise outside of America.
Its a mistake in roster construction. The last two spots don't play much, so you should have a couple young players who are "just happy to be there."
For example, the men have Anthony Edwards this year. The last two get minutes in garbage time since many of the US games are blowouts.
From the 12 current players, I would pick out a top 9, then add in Taurasi as a legacy pick. For the last two, we need some youth which would be players like Clark, Reese, Brink, Juju Watkins, etc.
Then the young players can learn from the veterans on how to play international ball
DT and CC have almost identical stats but DT has a better team and defenses are playing them completely different.
DT & CC have almost identical scoring stats but CC leads DT 6 to 1 in AST plus REB, STL,BLK & the dreaded TOV.
DT already has 5 gold medals. Seriously, does she really need another one for her ego?
You are missing the point of others side’s argument. Women players complaining about lack of pay or chartered flights. Here they have a golden opportunity to shine more spotlight on their sport. Team USA gonna win gold whether it’s with DT or CC, but they let jealousy and pettiness got in the way.
I always thought there was a spot for a rookie as a symbolic youth of the Olympic spirt. No passing of torch, that's sad. A month off will prob be better for her in the long run of things. Since she has to carry entire team and coach on her shoulders.
That was 30 years ago they did that.
Arike wants to play for Nigeria, man.
She's not on the alternates.
It is in CCs best interest to fall back this time around. Her time will come and she'll be a starter on team USA.
Let the old birds go out with grace.
Rewind, rewind, rewind. Before this was political, it was a business decision and they f... up. What did you expect would happen in the land of Trump 2024?
jersey sales!!
All of that money would have gone to support all of the women development programs they have for youth. If you combine her present jersey sales with NBA players, she would be 4th! Imagine.
Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were Marketing picks in 1992... Why? ... Goal was to take the NBA global. Seemed to work very well for the NBA.
Agree politics and race are way over hyped. The idea that Caitlin Clark not deserve a selection on the Olympic team lacks a holistic view of precedent, achievements and popularity. Caitlin has proven her marketing impact by causing historic rises in attendance, viewership and sales in the NCAA and WNBA.
Shes averaging historic amount of turnovers but facts
no she doesn’t DESERVE it. she’s not a top 12 player. it’s that simple. it gets complicated when you bring in the other stuff
@@Davo2times Like DT now CC is not a top 12 player. But DT, Candace Parker & Breanna Stewart were selected as rookies with lesser rookie stats initially.
@@LukasP143 True.
@@Keshava108 yeah when you are the GOAT you stay until you retire. no need to even bring DT up. Clark isn’t even the best reserve. there’s a girl averaging 27ppg who didn’t make it
This Caitlyn thing has been problematic since being invited to the White House in a losing effort. There is a certain sector that are content with making her the face of mediocrity
Team usa doesn't know what thier doing. You have Caitlin on the team, and as a starter, give her minutes to see how she plays. If she's not playing well, then bench her. It's elementary
Perfectly put
How does Gaines get on Team, but not Caitlin?
It really isnt complicated. Is Catlin one of the best woman basketball players the US can field? Then she should be on the team.
Currently, no she isn't
@@That85Scorpio And currently not all the players selected are either. Run the stats
@@jamesbrigham1299 6 Assists to 6 Turnovers, Now talk to me about stats again 👀👀👀.
Put her on the team!
The number of people complaining about the inclusion of the greatest women's player of all time is mental. Diana Taurasi is the GOAT and let's be honest, it isn't as close as we pretend it is. If she wants to go, she goes. End of story.
Right, it's not narcissistic to go for a 6th gold, when you can pass the touch to the younger players, for the growth of the league, you care so much about. You know could have made her an assistant coach to do the same.
This is a symptom of social media sickness on top of the general sickness in society. The last I checked the Olympics consists of a lot of sporting events, so this one person was not going to move the needle that much. Women's basketball is not even the most popular sport at the Olympics. Half the people going on about this probably do not even pay for Peacock, so they will watch anything not streamed somewhere for free.
Taurasi, Parker, and Stewart were all put on the Olympic team their rookie years and with way less accomplishments than Caitlyn Clark. So this argument is a mute point. Just all jealousy and being petty.
They had 9 NCAA championships coming into the W. Unsure how you say “way less accomplishments”?
@@davidwilliams7669 Those are "team" accomplishments. Stewart played with 12 other WNBA players on her team during er career. None of them were the all time Career college scorer for men or women and 2 time College Player of the Year. Those are individual accomplishments.
Opportunities are taken whenever possible by both political groups. However, the Media makes the most of these opportunities to push their agenda and prop up their political candidates.
The Olympics is to represent the nation, it doesn't have to be a legacy player, it has to be the best player. Not every Olympian that took home gold was an old seasoned player, and the old tired selection committee should be more aware of what the country that they are supposed to represent actually wants to see. What does it mean, did she deserve a spot ? Not every Olympic participant made their selection through professional sports, many made it through college and even high school records. To decide that Caitlin hasn't been in the Wnba long enough is just stupid and prejudiced. She broke every singe college record, and THAT is the record you need to look at to determine her worth and her abilities. Sure, playing on the Olympic level is different than college, but pro was different than college and she came out with 30 pointers right away. This is a childish and amateurish show being put on by the Olympic selection committee, they need to look at themselves if they want to call someone underserving, from what I can see throwing away millions in revenue and putting the most popular player in the WNBA off the team is proving your unworthiness more than hers. She's 100% worthy, but seeing what she's been put through with cheap shots and jealously in the WNBA so far, I'm pretty sure she's better off NOT going to the Olympics, I'm pretty sure her team would sit on the bench and laugh if she got hurt, and based on their attitudes they would probably encourage it. These women are not professionals, professionals would welcome a star and be glad for her, they wouldn't act like spoiled brats that want to take their ball and go home. Take your Nike millions and stay safe at home Caitlin, you've already more than proved your worth to the league even if they don't want to acknowledge it. Play for 4 years, finish your Nike contract and laugh all the way to the bank, you are Too good for this team , too good for this country.
I will probably only watch the gold medal game now, I may have watched more if Clark was playing. I'm from Iowa and have been aware of her since High School.
I just want to know, who would they would take off? Clark has plenty of career ahead of her, she will be on the next 4 Olympic teams if she wants.
It’s never about being the best player. Anthony Davis made the Olympic team as a rookie lol. This is about getting maximum number of eyes and money into the women’s basketball. The people running this are so dumb it hurts.
No kidding, a lot of people out themselves as not knowing anything by trying to replace her with someone that's a completely different position 😂
@@legitdragon6202 You just outted yourself. Clark has better stat line than DT and Gray, who is still injured and yet to play this year. DT has 5, what does she need a 6th for? There's 2 guards right there. Feel free to check the stats of the other two guards and you'll find them comparable. Scoring within one made shot per game. And NOBODY on this team can open a floor like her, with her unlimited 3-point range and that's not even debatable, by anyone who knows sports.
@jamesbrigham1299 nah I can actually respect a decent argument, my comment was more about people going all over the roster for spots CC doesn't even play. But those 2 do have the advantage of experience and literally proving it on that stage, so for the sake of medals acting like it should just be a no-brainer is disingenuous too.
CC also misses a lot of those 3s - and between that and turnovers, let's not act like giving the other team points isn't a legitimate concern. Like poster said has plenty of time ahead to be the next icon for years to come
Take off Grandma Taurasi or Gray who hasn't played in over a year. Griner who hates America and would still be in a Russia prison if not for America.
Please Lord, don't let this story lead to protests and riots this election.
Hahaha
Why isn't anyone talking about Griner? Why is she (or he?) on the team?
Phillipines loves Caitlin Clark cant wait for her to tour asia . USA Womens basketball sucks!!!
Arike
Ogunbowale misses more shots per game than CC attempts. She’s overrated! 26 points on 24 shots? GTFOH, Nick!!
plus she wants to play on the Nigerian team.
1. quit talking about taurasi, that’s like leaving bron off the team
2. clark isn’t a top 12 player, it’s that simple. how can you tell a girl better than her “sorry, but”
3. yes she would bring a lot of eyes to the team
4. the trump prediction is hilarious bc it’s totally gonna happen 😂
in summary this isn’t a snub, it was a hard decision to make and in the end, it was made. no right answer.
She's acting like Caitlin is a scrub. The best shooter ever in the college game. The leading scorer of both men and women. LMAO. She brought Breanna's 6 international goals vs Clark's 3. Which means Clark has international experience. Destroyed her own point. Let's just stop lying. The women don't want her because of jealousy, envy and resentment, because Caitlin would "steal" their shine. Guess what, now there will be no shine to steal. Just don't cry about it later. The league and the other players weren't ready for an entertaining superstar to enter the league, even though they had at least a year to prepare for it.
World women’s sports is a humanitarian issue.
6,7,8 golds is not a flex, it’s an abject failure.
Women across the world need American women’s help. All the nails, eyelashes, and fake hair needs to take step back and look around
I hope CC says no in 2028 when the committee is begging her to play.
That would be the best time for her to play, it's in l.a., she is more seasoned and will actually play.
Fun fact, everybody is racist no matter your skin color.
Stephen A. Smith Take > Nick Wright
Aw. Poor Caitlin didn't make the Olympic team and she didn't deserve to make it. It is a catastrophe! SMFG
Simple minds will never be able to see a bigger picture. And no, the best 12 WNBA players are not on this team.
Nick could be the worst ever.
Hahaha
