Did Caitlin Clark deserve a spot on Team USA's roster for Paris?

    • @Keshava108

Caitlin Clark deserves placement on the USA Olympc team based on precedent as well as her unprecedented popularity. Caitlin Clark deserves to join Diana Taurasi (2004), Candace Parker (2008) & Breanna Stewart (2016) who were WNBA top draft picks selected for the USA Women's Olympic Team. Caitlin is the WNBA Rookie of the Month who reached 200 PTS, 75 AST & 60 REB faster than any player in history. Caitlin achieved this while being defended more closely than any other player and being blitzed more than any team. Caitlin has proven her marketing impact by causing historic rises in attendance, viewership and sales in the NCAA and WNBA.

In answer to the pinned question, NO! There are better players the rightfully could claim a spot on the team. However..............Caitlin is accomplished enough that her selection would not harm the team's chances, and it would rally and excite the country (with her popularity) in a way that the current 12 will not. Do we absolutely need the 12 most skilled players to win, or would it be a greater victory for our National Team to include someone that will bring far more attention (and national pride???) to the other 11 in the Olympics?
Neither approach is a "snub" to Caitlin, or to any other player. It's just what you feel is the priority here.

I think something that is missing from this conversation is that everyone likes Caitlyn Clark? She is not a politician. She is not anything that you media people try to project onto her. She is talented. She always speaks kindly about the people she plays with and she loves basketball. Those are the true statements about Clark. Everything else is noise!!
What has not been discussed and what could cause a lot of the noise to quiet down is if the WNBA would embrace her. If the leadership like a Diana T. and Brianna Stewart were to say, “we are for this kid and we see with our own eyes the fan base that she has brought, and we acknowledge her talent , we would love to have her on the USA team because she is a great ambassador for our country!”
That is what a leader does who cares about the WMBA.

Or if the WNBA is committed to the antagonistic position that it doesn’t need Caitlin Clark or people are turning in to watch other players, then give the NBA’s money back and stand on your own.

Yes and the 1st pick in 2012/2020 should’ve gone too. Appears with elevation of the womens game the vets/coaches are shutting the door on providing valuable leadership experience and development along with marketability of younger players through the olympics. One key item in USA Basketball's mission statement is "Its mission is to promote, grow, and elevate the game of basketball." Women's basketball is at a critical moment in time with its best and most popular female ambassador they have ever had.
Dream team took Bird and Magic who were essentially retired and not top 12 to the Olympics because they didn't need them to win games and their inclusion would popularize the sport immensely. And that's why the men never had to beg for viewers or complain about being under compensated.

Its a mistake in roster construction. The last two spots don't play much, so you should have a couple young players who are "just happy to be there."
For example, the men have Anthony Edwards this year. The last two get minutes in garbage time since many of the US games are blowouts.
From the 12 current players, I would pick out a top 9, then add in Taurasi as a legacy pick. For the last two, we need some youth which would be players like Clark, Reese, Brink, Juju Watkins, etc.
Then the young players can learn from the veterans on how to play international ball

The Olympics is to represent the nation, it doesn't have to be a legacy player, it has to be the best player. Not every Olympian that took home gold was an old seasoned player, and the old tired selection committee should be more aware of what the country that they are supposed to represent actually wants to see. What does it mean, did she deserve a spot ? Not every Olympic participant made their selection through professional sports, many made it through college and even high school records. To decide that Caitlin hasn't been in the Wnba long enough is just stupid and prejudiced. She broke every singe college record, and THAT is the record you need to look at to determine her worth and her abilities. Sure, playing on the Olympic level is different than college, but pro was different than college and she came out with 30 pointers right away. This is a childish and amateurish show being put on by the Olympic selection committee, they need to look at themselves if they want to call someone underserving, from what I can see throwing away millions in revenue and putting the most popular player in the WNBA off the team is proving your unworthiness more than hers. She's 100% worthy, but seeing what she's been put through with cheap shots and jealously in the WNBA so far, I'm pretty sure she's better off NOT going to the Olympics, I'm pretty sure her team would sit on the bench and laugh if she got hurt, and based on their attitudes they would probably encourage it. These women are not professionals, professionals would welcome a star and be glad for her, they wouldn't act like spoiled brats that want to take their ball and go home. Take your Nike millions and stay safe at home Caitlin, you've already more than proved your worth to the league even if they don't want to acknowledge it. Play for 4 years, finish your Nike contract and laugh all the way to the bank, you are Too good for this team , too good for this country.

No kidding, a lot of people out themselves as not knowing anything by trying to replace her with someone that's a completely different position 😂

@@legitdragon6202 You just outted yourself. Clark has better stat line than DT and Gray, who is still injured and yet to play this year. DT has 5, what does she need a 6th for? There's 2 guards right there. Feel free to check the stats of the other two guards and you'll find them comparable. Scoring within one made shot per game. And NOBODY on this team can open a floor like her, with her unlimited 3-point range and that's not even debatable, by anyone who knows sports.

@jamesbrigham1299 nah I can actually respect a decent argument, my comment was more about people going all over the roster for spots CC doesn't even play. But those 2 do have the advantage of experience and literally proving it on that stage, so for the sake of medals acting like it should just be a no-brainer is disingenuous too.
CC also misses a lot of those 3s - and between that and turnovers, let's not act like giving the other team points isn't a legitimate concern. Like poster said has plenty of time ahead to be the next icon for years to come

Take off Grandma Taurasi or Gray who hasn't played in over a year. Griner who hates America and would still be in a Russia prison if not for America.

    1. quit talking about taurasi, that’s like leaving bron off the team
    2. clark isn’t a top 12 player, it’s that simple. how can you tell a girl better than her “sorry, but”
    3. yes she would bring a lot of eyes to the team
    4. the trump prediction is hilarious bc it’s totally gonna happen 😂
in summary this isn’t a snub, it was a hard decision to make and in the end, it was made. no right answer.

She's acting like Caitlin is a scrub. The best shooter ever in the college game. The leading scorer of both men and women. LMAO. She brought Breanna's 6 international goals vs Clark's 3. Which means Clark has international experience. Destroyed her own point. Let's just stop lying. The women don't want her because of jealousy, envy and resentment, because Caitlin would "steal" their shine. Guess what, now there will be no shine to steal. Just don't cry about it later. The league and the other players weren't ready for an entertaining superstar to enter the league, even though they had at least a year to prepare for it.

World women’s sports is a humanitarian issue.
6,7,8 golds is not a flex, it’s an abject failure.
Women across the world need American women’s help. All the nails, eyelashes, and fake hair needs to take step back and look around
