That bit about the anchor point at the 08:00 mark has been bothering me for MONTHS. And your helpful video showed me what was wrong. Excellent tutorial.
Thanks! Basic and simple, just what i was looking for. I would add that you might want to check not only anchor point, but also position, rotation and scale
This was all super helpful, Evan. I'd love to see a Mocha Intermediate or Advanced version if you're ever interested in doing one in the future. Loads of helpful information here. Thanks for your time and dedication!
Support for more Mocha on here seems pretty strong. I think we can definitely get into more. Definitely keen to get more specific into techniques, and get into the various modules the pro version offers.
This was a great refresher to Mocha. One thing, though, using the Corner Pin (Support Motion Blur) option does transform the layer so the AE motion blur switch works. This is preferable to the CC Force Motion Blur effect 🙃
I tried following along, but had issues when the tracking prematurely stopped. Then I had to force quit because I hadn't sufficient memory on my computer.
Nice refinement to the Mocha AE tracker. Thanks for this tutorial! I'd like to see more advanced Mocha AE tutorials, if you're so inclined to go there. Please? Please?
@@ECAbrams Thanks for considering another video. FWIW, i find AE's point tracker is only reliable under ideal conditions. Mocha's planar tracker always works when there is a plane surface to track. Something I struggle with is when the plane extends beyond the screen. Is there a technique to "extend" Mocha's tracking when this happens?
if we had to rotoscope the finger back in, why did we need to mask it out in mocha the first time? Was that just to tell mocha not to worry about that area when it was trying to track the plane?
The tutorial was recorded at 1920 by 1080. I use a Dell U2718Q, but I'm not sure that's on display in the tutorial at all. The monitor doesn't really affect the screen recording of a tutorial.
this is the best mocha tutorial i've seen, just missing how you keep the reflections on the screen and blend it into the added image. but thanks still!
tip for anyone who also needs this-- go to the image ur using for the screen, blending options, then pick screen or multiply, click around to see what looks good
When I arrive at the point that I have to copy and paste the anchor point, my video doesn't change the position and doesn't put into the screen, you know why? I'm doing something wrong?
sometimes it happens that when finishing tracking, surface planner doesn't fit precisely or moves away from exact point. so, you can go to the "AdjustTrack" bar (do as at 7:12 in this video & see bottom left to find AdjustTrack ), when go to AdjustTrack you will find the four corner pins turned red corner pin. now move these red corner pins wherever you want precisely and when you move these corner pins they will add their keyframe and you can precisely fit your logo, text whatever.
I think I can make that happen. We'll be getting deeper into Roto and Tracking, adjusting tracks, complex roto like hands and faces, all the good stuff!
No matter how I do it, the item I'm trying to apply the export to wont end up on the right place.. I can see the keyframes and a red box, but it's either 1 pixel big or lost in space and time.
Tip for you. In case you don't know! For roto this type of situation you need to link your Roto track layer.. to get better roto without tracking frame by frame. What I mean by that you already tracked a finger shape to tell mocha not to track this area. Well you can use that track to drive your Roto shape as well..
It's a great tip. I usually use that method in my roto work. In this case, my garbage matte on the finger needed more manual tweaking when the finger deformed in certain spots so the track wouldn't have been super accurate for locking on to. But, we'll definitely get into all that in a later tutorial.
@@ECAbrams sometimes you need to single track method but most of the time the link to track method give you the General motion. When I try to roto something in mocha I always first do a link to track method.. than the Other single track as we all know.. 😀
Quick question, if I got a multi objects that I need to track in one video, do I need to keep duplicate the footage with the mocha effects or I can just duplicate the effect on the same video???
First of all, LOVE your tutorials so much! Thanks for the years of creative information! I’m having a lot of trouble trying to track a record after I drop it. I basically enter the frame holding a white record jacket and then drop it about 3 inches to a chromakey green table top. Every time I drop it goes wonky! Is there a way to correct it as it goes along? If I make corrections it seems to throw off everything prior.
No, actually I shot with a very fast frame rate to ensure less motion blur. I just had a chat with a designer friend who believes it’s due to the fact that the record is white, and you can see the shadows of my hands on the cover. His suggestion was fir me to reshoot with a pattern, rather than blank white. Do you think that could be the problem?
@@Fredo_Viola The issue is always texture. So, if it's h264, 422, lossless, whatever, it doesn't substantively change the content. Mocha needs patches of predictable texture to attach to. So if the record is effectively textureless, or the only dominant feature on it is your hand or shadows caused by your hand, which will move in relation to the actual thing you want to track, those should be removed from the calculation. You might try actually excluding those things with masks to see if you can get mocha to only consider the record surface that is unchanged. A little like how we want to remove foreground occlusions when tracking background objects.
I tried including the shadows and it didn’t make a difference, so I just drew many crossed lines along the top third of the album, where the hand shadows aren’t showing up, and reshot. Would that be enough if a pattern for Mocha to latch into?

cant you do a tutorial on tracking someones face with mocha creating a matte and filling ther matte with another face and have the replace face move with the face that was tracked/matte??thanks

Absolutely. It's a great module once you get to know it. I'll likely be doing a series of more specific Mocha tutorials soon, and Adjust Track is definitely on the list to focus in on.
you can make splines of any shape. Geometric. Organic. Anything. But it's not really for points. It tracks areas and textures in patches. So if you have a point you want to track you would need to draw a spine patch that encompasses that point. That's the main difference between point and planar tracking.
