    In 1980 my friends and I had finished our nurse training, we worked for 6 months and then we went to the Greek islands for 3 months, we slept on the beach or rented rooms, we ate in small tavernas got bread from the village bakeries every morning it was the best time of my life

      Went for only 3 weeks at a time every year in the 1970’s and 1980’s, plus several times in the 90’s and did the same as you did. It was bliss. I’ve never been happier anywhere. We paid our way, left no litter, were respectful…and the people were wonderful. The food, was superb. Then many tourists came, wanting burgers, chips, nightclubs, sunshine, lots of alcohol, as if they were at home !
      I visited Corfu often, Paxos, Crete several times, Rhodes, Samos, Skiathos, Meteora, Athens, Kos, Santorini, Ios and so on.

      The Greek diet is mainly vegetarian.Meat dishes used to be once a week and fish too. Traditionally we don't consume anything coming from meat every Wednesday and Friday during the whole year. Also we fast about 40 days in Easter and the most hardcore people fast at Christmas too.

      Many American-Greeks opt out of using filo by substituting flour tortillas for individual feta-spinach pies. The tortillas are not labor intensive and taste similar to filo. Of course, filling technique is different but all ingredients are identical.

    This reminds me of such good memories of my American Grandmother who grew up during the great depression. She made cucumbers and tomatoes in apple cider vinegar all Summer, bean soup with “tomato” sauce (she used a little ketchup), and scrambled eggs and potatoes for breakfast. Whiting was the only fresh fish we ate as well. I’m amazed! Thank you for sharing with us. ❤

    Greek cuisine is so close to Armenian cuisine as well as Turkish cuisine as they all lived together for centuries. I’m Armenian and I cook everything that she cooked with some minor differences in spices as I was born and raised in the Middle East. One day I want to try to make the tomato dolma stuffed with rice and pine nuts and parsley which is an authentic Greek dish. I had it back home in an Armenian family from Greece and I loved it. I went online and found the recipe but I don’t think it is the same dolma that I had back home. Nothing online is authentic, they make changes to it and it doesn’t taste the same. Have a good day everybody.

      @AhmetCakar-ul8nr there's no "turkish" cuisine.
      Everything Turkish it's stolen from Greeks Arabs and Persians.
      Ottomans weren't even in the region when Greeks were making these dishes.
