- In this short documentary, I dive into the fascinating context behind Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy album, recorded in 1972 during one of the band's most creatively rich periods. We'll see how the material recorded during this time gave them a real opportunity to release a double album, changing the course of their discography. Along the way, I present a couple of alternate track listings for a single album version, showing what Houses of the Holy might have looked like in a different timeline. Join me as I explore one of the most intriguing what-if scenarios in Led Zeppelin's legendary career! #ledzeppelin #jimmypage #robertplant #johnpauljones #johnbonham #thesongremainsthesame #therainsong #classicrock #documentary #fantheories #theories
These what-if videos turn into killer what-if playlists for my work week. Keep them coming!
Houses of The Holy with The Rover? Hell yeah. Can't wait to watch this.
This is a great video for someone like me who loves the behind the scenes details of these legendary artists.... great job 😊
Another astounding triumph Jose. I really hope and suspect the remaining members are watching your videos (well, Page at least…he’s certainly the most likely) and you get approached to do something official. The depth of research and pleasing visuals have really enhanced my free time. Thank you.
If it was a double album I would have retired then.
Rock & Roll!
JCM is awesome, thanks for your documentaries and your Rock & Roll Soul!
God Bless Jose! 👨🌾
Always my pleasure Marty. This double album had a very strong chance...Really did!
Like always your insight and research is crazy.
Amazing as always
They would have found that confounded bridge.
That was a brain stretcher - loved the concept of a double album. (Forgot all about the time limitations for vinyl!)
Great job on the video as always.
Single album:
Side 1:
1) The Song Remains The Same
2) The Rain Song
3) Houses Of The Holy
4) Dancing Days
Side2:
1) The Rover
2) Over The Hills And Far Away
3) No Quarter
4) The Ocean
42+ minutes. Might be one of the best albums of all time. Not sure about a double.
"The Rover" into "No Quarter"...I could get behind that!
Graffiti and Houses songs on the same album would be killer!
I made my own Houses Of The Holy when I first got a CD burner, I replaced The Crunge and D'yer Mak'er with Houses Of The Holy and The Rover. That version made it my second favorite Zeppelin album.
Sure glad they did a double album eventually. It would've been a bummer to go all those years without the extra songs we got, it was hard enough waiting until later years to get some of the tracks we did get with the expanded album sets.
9:58 hahaaaa....nice.
You've got a knack for record sequencing. That is a really decent track list for the double album.
I think a neglected song was Hey Hey What Can I Do. It's a shame that they left it off of LZ3, they should have replaced Hats off to (Roy) Harper with it. That is a song I really hate. I think it's hard for people to realize that back in the 70s and 80s, the only way you could hear that song was to randomly hear it on the radio, or buy the Japanese single of it with the B side. You couldn't go to a mainstream record store, you'd have to go to a special independent record store if one were in your town. People actually used to call in to radio stations to request songs like this just to hear it. I think that Hey Hey What Can I Do could have been put on LZ4, Houses or PG and it would have fit in. It was only released in Japan as a B side, so I don't think record buyers would have felt gypped by it showing up on one of those albums, they would have loved it.
What I did was record it off the radio and make my own Zeppelin 3 with Hey, Hey What Can I Do and Poor Tom right after Gallows Pole and Bron-Yr Stomp close the album and delete Roy Harper.
Wonderful presentation
Fascinating idea for a changed up HOTH!
Awesome stuff, Jose! Hey man, guess what? I'll be seeing JBLZE on Monday night, in Tampa! It'll most certainly will be worth the 3.5 drive from Jacksonville! Jason, Mr. Jimmy, and the rest of his band? WOWSA. Cheers.
Nice episode Jose. Love these "what ifs". Every band has the dilemma of selecting tracks for an album. Not every song can be a hit. Zep didn't do too bad considering the likes of the "throw shit at the wall and see what sticks" business model of the Rolling Stones. But, the Crunge is just out there ! ........ there are little bits of it, here and there, that could have been developed into something cool and really funky, but as it is, it's a "Siri, Skip track" for me when it comes up. Question - Are they trying to find a physical bridge that crosses over something, or a musical bridge?
I love The Crunge, my wife hates it! LOL. Being that it's a warped parody of James Brown, the "bridge" in question is a musical one. James would often yell "Bridge!" to his band so they knew when to make the change.
Currently listening to Bat Out Of Hell IV.
Here's the tracklisting....
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO hahahahhaha
Yikes!😬
Now this is interesting! FUN FACT: THE DOORS Waiting For the Sun LP didnt include title track either. There is another band other than Zep that followed this trend. Cant remember
I’m excited 😂
Awesome!!❤
Jose, a brilliant piece of work.
HOTH is my personal favourite along with 1.
The cover was shot at the Giant’s Causeway, County Antrim Northern Ireland 🇬🇧. A place I have walked a lot of times.
Salutations from Belfast Northern Ireland 🇬🇧
Still looking for these kids? 😜
@ 🧐🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Good stuff. Houses of the Holy is my fav album so I'd hesitate to mess with it. Your double album version looks good apart from side D which looks a bit weak. The resulting single album version of Physical Graffiti looks great.
Excellent 😉
Hey Jason thanks man! Hope you have a great weekend with no Meat Loaf 1977 vibes.
They used the Irish coastline of the Giants Causeway for the cover of the album and an old medieval Irish castle called Dunluce Castle nearby as the inside sleeve. They only played in Ireland once in 1971, Belfast and Dublin, Belfast was the world premiere of Stairway, first time played in front of an audience. I think Jimmy had Irish background on his mother’s side, like the Beatles, David Bowie and Kate Bush who had Irish heritage.
Now I gotta dig out the companion disc!👍
I prefer Houses to 4 , I may even have it as my number 1 Zepp album.
The ROVER is a top 10 ZEP song to me! It would of fit perfectly on HOUSES.
My thinking is that it could have been a double album, yes, but it wasn't quite their time to do one yet. I think Physical Graffiti works better as a double LP than Houses x 2 LP would have.
The big question for me is, what do they do live in 1972-73 if they put together the double album in 1973?
Dancing Days sounds would be a fitting song for Queens of the Stone Age to cover
Side A
Song Remains the Same
Rain Song
Night Flight
The Crunge
Side B
No Quarter
Dancing Days
The Ocean
Houses of the Holy
It sounds like Plants vocals were sped up on some tracks giving those songs sound like he's on helium. I hate the way his vocals are on No Quarter as well. I much prefer how they sounded live on The Song Remains The Same. My Houses Of The Holy would be
Side 1
The Song Remains The Same
The Rain Song
Dancing Days
Over The Hills And Far Away
Side 2
Houses Of The Holy
No Quarter(w/more extended soloing on keyboards & guitar like the live version)
The Ocean
A problem with Walter's Walk. It wasn't finished until 1982
The instrumental was done by 1972 amd they played it on stage that year so, the what if is strong here. :)
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories the lyrics wasn't written until 1982
@@duanehall100 If it had been included on Houses of the Holy, the lyrics would have been written by that time.
@@duanehall100 I'm pretty certain that JCM established on a previous video on ITTOD that Walter's Walk vocals were recorded in 1978. Jimmy did some guitar overdubs and mixing in 1982.
Google Walter's Walk and it said that the music track was recorded in 1972 and Robert recorded the vocals in 1982 (Jimmy Page said)
Robert Plant could not hit those high notes probably because he smoked cigarettes..... cigarettes are terrible for singers... and for anyone
That's one possibility! Opening shows with Immigrant Song didn't help either. Not even Gillan did this hehe. Thanks for watching Mario!
No actually. There are/were many really excellent singers who smoke/d cigarettes. Plant's problem was he didn't take any vocal coach training techniques or do any vocal exercises which would be essential for the level of dynamics he was wanting to squeeze out of his larynx. And because he didn't properly exercise this essential muscle, he damaged it due to excessive straining.
@@apollomemories7399David Gilmour, Dennis DeYoung, Ted Nugent and a few others never smoked cigarettes. David did toke on the odd joint but cigarettes were never touched. Dennis never smoked anything.
@@terrencereardon6374 I think you'll find that David Gilmour did in fact used to smoke cigs. I'm sorry, but speaking as a hard-boiled prog-nerd Brit, I absolutely loathed Dennis DeYoung. I thought he was awful. I'd also never think of Ted Nugent as a "singer" and didn't his rhythm guitarist Derek St. Holmes do most of or at least half of the singing anyway?
This album, Presence and In through The Outdoor are my least favourite Zeppelin albums.
