Showa front and rear, similar to the contemporary Fireblade.

You’re down in Cornwall? Me too! I’m currently looking at one of these, 08 with 7500 miles. Torn between that and a 701 husqavarna SM

No decision there really, you must get the Triumph :) not even sure there is anyone down here who works on the Husky bikes lol, you can do most of the work on the Triumph yourself so it's an easy choice :)

Niced bike! I love all the Speed Trips'. Technically Gen 1 was the single headlight, 885 cc version 1994-95 apparently there was a 750 cc version also, sold only in Europe.

Out of interest do you prefer this model to the newer versions you’ve owned? I’ve had an 11 plate and was considering a 7 plate !

I’m looking at a 2005 for $2500 but it has 51,000 miles. Do you think that’s a complete deal breaker? I haven’t seen any with so many, but it looks clean and is owned by an older gentleman

These can manage high miles without too much effort, , but I would personally want to see a VERY good service history, including at least 2 valve clearance checks, and the rear suspension having been serviced too (known weak point) make sure you can get to hear it start from cold, in case of chain rattle or smoking, it would be a £1500 bike here in the UK, so not sure what prices are doing where you are? just be aware that in another 20k miles it's going to be close to the end of it's life, so see if you can find something with maybe 30k miles if possible. Also.... how many owners has the bike had? and howe long has this "Older Gentleman!" owned the bike? hope this helps and good luck 😉

    I had my 2nd Speedtrip - a 2006 in white.... but it had an issue w/ elect =R & R needed replaced...

The charging system is their Achilles Heel. They can burn stators and R/R's.I own a 2005 Speedy and already on stator number 2 after 20,000 miles. The fix is to swap the rotor, stator and stator cover for items off a 2008 bike.

@@eskertoo I find your comment interesting. I'm getting a 2007 model and have read about this issue on the Triumph forum and the recommended means to resolve it as I might apply similar to mine. My understanding is solution to be upgraded battery cables and the new cable to the stator T2500676 and one improved R/R. Maybe I can contact you on messenger or something? Would be great to hear about you experiences.

@@stianskjrestad4521 You should get at least 15000 miles from the stator.Mine burned at 20,000 miles.I fitted a Gammatronix battery charge warning light so I know straight away if my stator burns out.I once rode home 80 miles with no charge going to the battery! That 's why I always use Motobatt batteries. It was only 11.2 volts when I got home but the bike never missed a beat.I have swapped the RR for a better one ....A Shindengen mosfet type off a Street Triple.Fits in just nice. But the connectors are different. You can get the Shindengen RR off Ebay, but beware of imitations.Incidentally it is dead easy to change the stator.I buy mine online from Electrex World in the UK.I have a Street Triple as well and both my Triumphs have them fitted. The Street Triple is on stator number 5 after 47000 miles. But I used to buy used ones off Ebay.Beware of Chinese stators !But as I said in my previous post the more permanent fix is to upgrade the rotor, stator and alternator cover to 2008 items. You can get the info on the Speed Triple Forum...all the relevant part numbers and suchlike.I may do this next time I have a problem.I also think it helps to have heated grips fitted.I have my own theory that they burn off some voltage that would be shunted back to the stator. So I have them turned on Winter and Summer!

@@eskertoo the bike I will get is at around 10k miles. I guess I need to check battery cables and RR once I get to it, though I suppose it's equipped with the original ones (perhaps), so I'll try find the better RR and also perhaps the better battery cables and the upgraded link cable (with the fitted connectors) for the stator connection. Thanks for the detailed info.

@@stianskjrestad4521 I would not worry about the battery cables.Or even the RR at this stage. The culprit is the alternator rotor which produces too much voltage at the stator due to the magnets being too strong. So the stator always runs a bit hot and will eventually burn. But as I said get yourself a Gammatronix battery charge indicator,(Or similar).Basically a pair of thin wires with terminals at the end which attach to the battery ,threaded through under the tank and the tiny warning light(about 10mm) can be zip tied anywhere around the handlebar area.It flashes green with the engine off as long as there is more than 12.5 volts ,solid green when the engine starts and the battery is charging. And if it flashes red or amber there is no charge to the battery so you know to investigate. You could do worse than take a peek at the stator windings and check if one or two are looking a bit burned Just remove the alternator cover...beware as it's held on by magnetic force after you remove the tiny bolts and may need a knock with a rubber mallet to dislodge it.No need to disconnect it if you are just checking the condition of the coils.Hopefully they will all be a nice golden colour. You will lose a very small amount of oil.And you will need a new gasket.I would not worry about any upgrades until the stator burns out .It may last for years yet!Just enjoy the bike.Keep an eye on the oil level....some Speeds like to burn a little oil, mine certainly does.
