Awesome video! I ran into a timing issue putting my DE back together. It would go out of timing when cranking by hand. I figured this was due to 3 tensioners, and no oil pressure. But you manually crank with no issues, so my buddy and I must have been off on timing somewhere.

I didn't read all of the comments but I don't recommend using an impact to install bolts. The engine is made of Aluminum and can strip easily. Trust me. Been there done that.
I've noticed the one thing all these Nissan V6 timing chain videos have in common is the owners didn't like to do regular oil changes. I've read the reasons why they have tensioner problems is dirty engine oil. My 3.5 has 165k miles on it and the chain is still as quiet as the day I bought it with 50k miles on it. I change the oil every 5k miles or less though as I REALLY never want to do this job!
Not true. I religiously do oil changes every 3000 miles and my timing chain started to wine at 174000 changed at 91000 and now at 174000 with routine maintenance and oil changes.
The gasket blowing behind the galley cover has nothing to do with oil changes either. Sludge build-up, plugged up passages, solenoids, cam phasers, tensioners, etc, now THAT would be from lack of oil changes.
any tips on replacing the camshaft sprocket and camshaft tensioners? do i need to remove the valve cover to hold down the camshaft while tightening them back on? can the tensioner be installed with only the front cover removed? thanks very helpful video
Did the cam encoders slip on that engine? I can't tell in the video, but it looks like the encoders are NOT in the same place on both of the cam sprockets/phasers... 🤷 I'm battling a p0340 timing issue on a 2015 Q50 right now... passenger side bank (bank 1) the ECU constantly reports that the cam is over advanced/won't go to commanded position. When I put my dual trace oscilloscope on the output of both cam sensors, the traces don't line up correctly on the scope screen, the pulses between the two are offset instead of being right in line with each other. I checked everything electrical on this car, and the owner replaced both cam sensors with the original, correct, dealer purchased, Denso sensors. The timing chain is tight, and the tensioner has plenty of room to go yet. I'm guessing it's a bad phaser or encoder ring has slipped. 🤔
If you have an aftermarket Cam Sensor installed, it can cause this code to continue to return. The engine in this video actually had lack of maintenance and the sprockets were full of sludge and not operating.
What do you mean "that little crank gear handle up to 1000h.p."?? 🤷 All that "little crank gear" does is turn the cams, and water pump, REGARLESS of how much horsepower the engine is producing. It makes NO difference to that little gear how much power the engine is making at all.
Hey Jay, great video! I have a Family member has a '06 Frontier w/4.0 156k miles with what sounds like a definite rattle up front motor. I'm trying to lend a hand and been doing the research. I've figured that most probably sone kind of timing chain issue. What's the failure that's causing the rattle: Chain Stretch, bad tensioners or Cam Phaser failure? While I'm in there and I don't want to go back in there, 'may as well' replace them all. What else should I 'may as well' get done? Thanks again!!
Most common the primary chain tensioner guide plastic cracks and that rattles around. But if you go into the timing chain area, I would change all chains, tensioners, guides and I would also replace the back timing cover gasket as well.
Along with taking the fuel pump fuse out shouldn't you kill the combustion also? Pulling the spark plugs for the 30 sec crank a few times before the initial startup? Appreciate the video it was great.
@@FixyourNissan I did what you said and everything worked great. Better than having to put in the spark plugs after the cold start crank. I bought an 06 6MT G35 with rod knock but never ran hot, swapped a short block from an 04 and built it back up. This video especially with the cam timing instructions really helped with the reassurance aspect. Really appreciate it. Mine fired right up and sounds real mean.
I would like to say thanks for uploading this video it’s been great . I came to the same problem you had at 9:20 where the timing chain skipped on me . My question is how do i know where to position it ? I dont see a tick on the engine back timing cover , do we just assume to put it back to 10 o’clock on left bank and 2 o’clock on right bank? I tried reading the forums and only you have the same problem i do and want to know where to put back the position where it skipped
Ohh, piece of cake...hold on, i just gotta go pull my engine real quick haha. Good idea priming that tensioner before starting the car! Did you find the secondary tensioners on little chains to be worn out at all? (The little plastic boots) Thank you for this video, i've been driving with that annoying rattle on my 6th gen. maxima since 25,000 miles (Now at 125k) Nissan sucks ass for cheaping out on a such a crucial component as the main timing chain guide. 5th gen Maxima had an amazing chain guide. The cost cut is more than obvious....yet they refused to fix it for me, told me it was my exhaust rattling. (I had bumper to bumper plus the extended gold package warranty)
So I did the secondary timing tensioner‘s is there anything special I need to do when reinstalling? Does the oil pressure instantly kick in and then the tensioners will hold the chain?
Thankyou for this video. Im getting ready to do this on my Nissan Maxima 3.5L. Tell me something, I noticed when you set the engine to TDC, the secondary chain marking wasnt lined up with the dots on the sprocket. It single painted link on secondary on the chain was lined up with the dimple pointing straight up. But when you put it back on you used the dots on the sprocket. Was the chain in the wrong place?
+Rccm112 Engine was turned to TDC before the chain was removed. The colored links may not line up when you put the engine to TDC. It takes over 40 revolutions for the colored links to line up. So as long as you put it on TDC, then take off the chain, you an then line up the colored links when you put the chain on.
This it be the best time to change the water pump and the gaskets right where you were pointing ☝️ at the end of the video because they go out and is going to be the same work to get to it just like the time chain So water pump And gaskets To be a absolutely amazing job done.
Hi, Great straightforward video. I just got a 05 exterra with a what sounds like just the chain going around on the passenger side of the engine, , It sounds like a chain, not wirring or anything, just a chain, , But my oil pressure drops at idle and slowing down, I am guessing I need that gasket replaced behind the chains?, The one you say blows out, How long can I drive it before it does damage?, I don't have a place to do all this work, outside is not an option,, , where do I get the parts? Nissan?and gaskets?
Thanks for watching. Once that back timing cover blows out, there is no way of knowing how long it could last, or if you can do sprocket damage by not taking care of it. Failure to address this normally will cause sprocket damage before engine damage. The sprockets are 500 bucks each. So you want to address this issue sooner than later. thanks Jay!
Can the variable timing gear sprockets just be changed instead of replacing the entire engine? I have a customer with a 09 370Z that won't start/run. Cam/crank sensors test ok. Car will run in limp mode with crank sensor unplugged. Thinking it could be a problem with the sprockets or timing chains. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
great video...is it possible to remove the timing chain access cover and then remove and replace the primary timing chain tensioner? If yes, should i worry about the timing chain possibly skipping a tooth? When installing the new tensioner do I remove the tensioner pin when it's lined up with timing chain guide contact point? Should I remove the fuel pump fuse prior starting vehicle so that the pressure builds in the tensioner? Do I need to remove the water pump access cover too? thanks
Thanks for watching. If you have the Access covers to get to the Primary tensioner. I pull the fuel pump fuse. Run the car out of gas. Then remove the access cover and will wiggle the crank back and forth to just get a little slack on the primary tensioner side. Then I will remove the tensioner and install the new one. I will pull the pin, turn the engine by hand one time. Then button it up. Then before I put the fuel pump fuse in, I turn the engine over a few times to build oil pressure first, then put the fuse in and your good to go
After having watched this video, I have learned several key concepts about timing. On the side note, my 06 g35 coupe would be similar in regards to setting up the timing and replacing the chain. Correct? I was replacing the waterpump and it seems it may have skipped a tooth when I was loosening the tension on the waterpump side for the timing chain. So what I have understood from this video, is that as long as its at top dead center and the colored links are aligned with the gears, then the timing for the main chain is correct. any advice?
hi FixyourNissan, I can't tell you how big of a relief when I found this vid. I opened up my 07 pathfinder timing chain case past weekend and despite of all the carefulness, the left camshaft jumped on me. I've been so stressed out for last few days and still don't know what to do. when I saw your camshaft jumped, I was like, ohhhh that's it, how does he fix it. so that's how. awesome. I'm going to try to turn it like you did and see it I fix it. I'm also going to open up the 2 valve covers to check check check to see if the cylinders are located correctly. Do you happen to know where exactly the left camshaft (cylinder 6) is set when the whole timing is TDC? you know like cylinder 1 is supposed to face up at each other. if you know how to confirm it is TDC by looking at the camshafts and the cylinders, please shed me some light. I really appreciate your help!! thanks
Iam in the middle of doing this. I have the engine at TDC the painted links are not at same position they are at on the install is the normal? Or do I have to make sure they are at those locations on install?
I am getting my timing chain tensioner guide replaced should I automatically do the timing chain and water pump as well or just the guide to stop the noise?
If you are going into the chains, I would replace all chains, guides, Tensioners and a Dealer water pump if you have over 100k miles. Do not get a after market water pump. They never last.
Thanks for this vid. My 2005 J31 maxima/teana 3.5 has a the dreaded timing chain noise but only on start up and then goes away. I think it is possibly just the tensioner but i was thinking i would do the timing chain anyway. Is it possible to do this with the engine still in or is it better to pull the engine
@@FixyourNissan I got a gnarly tapping noise coming from the top end on a q50 2014.. also has a couple misfire codes and runs like trash.. thanks for the info man!
@FixyourNissan i have a 2010 g37x at cold start up there is a loud knocking noise but goes away when warmed up but when you rev it to 1500rpm above knock is consistent there. Any suggestions? No troubles at all
I have a 2005 g35x sedan and I have a timing chain knock during a cold start up.To change the tensioner do I need to pull the valve cover and the chain etc...
You mentioned the "Y" shaped plate on the rear/back timing chain cover has a gasket behind it. If that gasket is blown, would that cause low oil pressure at idle on a 2006 Frontier 4.0L V-6?
FixyourNissan Thanks I appreciate the reply. After, diagnosing the problem the best I can, I'm fairly sure a blown gasket there is causing my low oil pressure at idle. I just wanted as many opinions as possible before I pay the $1300 -$1400 to get it fixed.
I heard alot of people have the ratting sound on their timing chains, but for my 04 3.5 i have a whining sound and increases its pitch when the car revs up, is that an indication of loose timing chain/worn tensioner problems?
This is great DYI for the timing chain replacement! I'm in the middle of this now and you have some great tips. I also caught something you mentioned about the rear timing cover oil gasket blowing out. I think I might have this issue. :/ Is there anyway I could contact you or send a picture? I'm in Dallas so I'm not in your area. Thanks again for posting this!!!
I have Timing code P0014 on my infinity m35 with 240k . How big of a job should I expect? Does motor need to be out to do timing? Cam position sensor changed and check 1 solenoid which showed clean screens so I assume now it is timing change. Thanks for your help... great video
Thank you for taking the time to watch my video. No the engine does not need to be removed from the vehicle to do this repair. This type of repair is more labor intensive than parts. So I would say $2200 in labor would be around the price I would expect. Thank you
I just changed the timing chain, viewed several videos here on RUclips. QUESTION: once you re-assembled everything, did your Xterra start up right away? I can't seem to get get mine to turn on. Assembled it, no start, took apart again, timing chain jumped a tooth, re-assembled, still won't start.
You need to disable the fuel system before you do the chain work. Then leave it disabled. So when you go to start it up when you are done, the engine just cranks and does not start. This will build oil pressure up for all the tensioners. Failure to do that, can result in the timing to jump a tooth or 2
Hold on for a second, so that’s how I find top dead Center. & if I don’t get the tool for preventing the fly wheel from moving, if it would move this is how I would resolve that?
I will like have an advise from you with respect to my engine. About a year ago my frontier entered water and it affected the engine. I had to change the engine block and the cam-shaft(under the engine). The issue now is when I start the engine there's a strange sound with in 5seconds after which it fades until i rev the engine. After some minutes of engine warm up the oil pressure guage drops and the oil light come on. A mechanic around advised me to get a VQ35DE engine to replace it, that it is same, but i'm not sure of the performance on a truck. Please I will like to have an advise from you on what to do to fix this engine as I really would not like to place a low-end engine as replacement.
This was a junk motor I used for the video. At the same time, I have done so many of them, I am use to the sound of the air gun when I tighten them to around where it would be tightened to spec
I replaced the primary chain, tensioner and guides on my 2017 pathfinder but the p0014 and p0017 returned. Replaced crank sensor and tested one of the vvt solenoids and it checked ok. I cleaned as much sludge as possible, any other possibilities?
@@FixyourNissan hey Jay! At idle my intake cams are both at 15 degrees. They are supposed to be at or close to 0 degrees at idle I think. Did my chain jump because I forgot to pull the fuel pump fuse and relieve pressure? 🫣
I notice there is 2 screws that comes from the bottom, how did you remove them ? did you have to remove the oil pain to access the screws? or there is something else?
I suspect (haven't removed the pass.side tensioner cover yet to verify) that my 2003 VQDE's main timing chain tensioner nylon(?) glide has slipped down on the metal. Is there a way to pull the small triangular cover, pull the tensioner itself, and manipulate the slide back up on the metal and resecure it WITHOUT removing the entire cover/going through an entire chain kit replacement fiasco? Hello, Can you fit a q50 or q60 engine RW or AWD engine, transmission, etc... on a QX60 suv ? Do we have to replace the subframe? I am aware about adding the rear diff, axles, transfer box, etc... to my suv. Can it be done ? Looking forward to hearing from you. Respectfully, Abbas

Hey man Great Video, I earned allot, I have a question, I want to swap an Engine out in my 2003 Infinity FX 35 with Engine from 2006 Nissan Murano they both have 3.5 L Engines, what do you think, Also The The Engine in FX35 Had Timing codes and it shut off while driving about 45mph and Now it does not Turn over, I am also a RUclipsr I mainly mess with Mercedes diesels, so not to familiar with Nissan Brand But I do like them, you obviously know what your doing, after watching your video I probably can do a timing job, but in any case, I will take this Engine apart first by removing a Timing cover, I want to know what happened, Question Do you think 3.5 Engine is a reliable Engine
They are both 3.5's but one is actually made in a America and one is made in Japan. The FX is the Japaneses one. I thing there may be intake timing differences between the engines, and of course oil pans since the FX is AWD and the Maxima is not
Renault=Nissan=JUNK! NISSAN WENT TO CRAP AFTER THEIR RENAULT MERGER. Nissan is now Japanese in name only. What you’re buying is French crap when buying a Nissan.
what motor exactly is this? I have a 4.0 that is losing pressure and being told to replace those two oil gally gaskets large and small. I need the exact model of those gaskets and where to buy? ANd going to get the timing chain kit off line at a ROCKAUTO or something. Have a guy going to do the labor at his shop. ABout 9-10 hours of labor he is saying. Please let me know. Thanks.
Question for you all. My secondary chains got move while I had them out and now I'm not sure what side was facing out. Do you think it will be ok, if I put them back on and they go one in a different direction than what they were b4? Also not sure how or when it fell out, but the exhaust cam gear dowel pin is now missing, are these available or does anyone happen to have one that I could purchase. Thank you for your time and good video!
I have a 1999 q45 t . I turned the motor by hand and it will turn about 180 degrees and it stops both ways. I tried to turn it a few times but, I did not want to apply to much pressure. Does this sound like a jumped or buckled timing chain?
+Anthony Tisdale I would try with the spark plugs removed, and if you still feel it stop, then yes, there is a timing issue that is keeping the engine from turning over with out any interference.
where do i get this gasket at for that Y shaped plate on the rear cover.. im putting a used engine in and when i went to take care of the timing chain for the hell of it i found out about this issue.
I know you can get it for a 2007 G35. Which is the same for all 3.5 engines and 3.7 Engines. If you try to get the gasket for a 3.7, it will show up unavailable.
I have a 2010 g37 apart right now that has thrown p0011 and p0340 and it reads -3degrees bank 2 and -16 degrees bank 1 at idle any obvious signs I should look for that the vvt sprocket is bad?
It was the sprocket that we’re stuck. Replaced both and it was idling at 0 degrees give or take. Once I compared the new to old you could see that they were misaligned.
Do you replace the small one ring seal between the front cam cap and the rear timing cover plate it is about the diameter of a pencil? It is the oil feed to the cam shaft phaser. There is also one between the front and rear timing covera. I have not been able to find them. Tried multiple dealera. Also the oil galley gaskets are not showing at the dealers. Any info is much appreciated .
Do the 3.5l have known problems with the oil galley gaskets blowing out. Mine appear fine and I was not having any problems but I thought I would replace them however I have 2 dealers that can't find a listing for them? Would you recommend replacing them if they are ok at this time? Thanks.
@@ufixit6806 Yes, If the Back Timing Gaskets is blown, it will loose oil internally and Yes it will cause the intake sprockets not to operate properly cause they will not have the full force of oil pressure to make them operate. The Gaskets you do not need to dab any RTV on when replacing. Just make sure mating Surfaces are clean.
Hey Jay! big thumbs you know your stuff! where is your shop located in NJ? I have a 2017 Infiniti Qx60 with a timing chain rattle. thanks for the video!
so this I hear of turning the motor over (by hand) 41 times to get the orange marks and dot/dashes to line up on both cam sprockets and crank shaft is not necessary?
It is not Necessary! What I do suggest is to disable the fuel system before you do any timing chain work. Then when you are done, allow the engine to turn over to build oil pressure before putting the fuel pump fuse back in. This way you build up oil pressure to the timing chain tensioners. Failure to do this could result in the timing chain jumping when started
One question if my chain snapped or the camshaft broke do i need to replace the hole engine or just the a new chain with the valve ? My car is a 350z hr
If a timing chain breaks, you can replace the timing chain. But you want to have valves checked. If the crank shaft breaks, then the whole engine would need to be rebuilt to replace the broken crank shaft, so it's cheaper to replace the engine at that point

I have taken the timing cover off and it looks the engine on this video with that built up oil. question would one of the sprocket go bad to give me this code? thanks
FixyourNissan I took the timing cover off and and the back timing cover gasket was ok but I don't want to spend money and not being it. I thought about a bad sprocket but wasn't sure
Water pumps are rare. The only time they are normally changed is if they are leaking. Which would come out by the ac compressor area. If you have no leaks. Then it's most likely a coolant bleeding issue.
FixyourNissan The parts replaced are OEM, water pump, guide and timing chain pressure piston, and I did not remove the fuel pump before started, the chain and piston was making good tension
You have to disable the fuel system so when you are done you can turn the engine over to build oil pressure. Failure to do that will result in the timing chain to jump 1 to 2 teeth and if it's 2 teeth or more it won't start.
FixyourNissan Thanks Devil Dog Semper Fi Brother I appreciate it I'm going to do on my Nephew Girlfriends car is it easier to do in car or remove engine or just remove entire front clip radiator, condensor,ac compressor etc

Excellent Video ---you mentioned an $11.00 Gasket for under the rear timing cover plate. The top one that some call a Y. I have not found that to be avail.I refer you to Motor Magazine Jan 2016 -- Foreign Service with Dan Marinucci - page 12 That can be found on the internet as well. What have you come up with other than making a gasket.
The timing marks on the chain and the timing marks on the sprockets ensure all your timing is lined up. So the timing chains are designed to have these colored links so if you put the engine at top dead center, it will line up with all the marks on the your sprockets and crank to ensure everything is timed properly

Did the cam encoders slip on that engine? I can't tell in the video, but it looks like the encoders are NOT in the same place on both of the cam sprockets/phasers... 🤷
I'm battling a p0340 timing issue on a 2015 Q50 right now... passenger side bank (bank 1) the ECU constantly reports that the cam is over advanced/won't go to commanded position.

If you pull the fuel pump fuse before you start and run it out of gas, you won't be able to combust any thing until you put the fuse in
@@FixyourNissan I did what you said and everything worked great.
The links on the chain are marked as well as the pulleys
Ohh, piece of cake...hold on, i just gotta go pull my engine real quick haha.
Good idea priming that tensioner before starting the car!
Did you find the secondary tensioners on little chains to be worn out at all? (The little plastic boots)
Thank you for this video, i've been driving with that annoying rattle on my 6th gen. maxima since 25,000 miles (Now at 125k)
Nissan sucks ass for cheaping out on a such a crucial component as the main timing chain guide. 5th gen Maxima had an amazing chain guide. The cost cut is more than obvious....yet they refused to fix it for me, told me it was my exhaust rattling. (I had bumper to bumper plus the extended gold package warranty)
Thanks for this video. Great stuff. Really appreciate it.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching
So I did the secondary timing tensioner‘s is there anything special I need to do when reinstalling? Does the oil pressure instantly kick in and then the tensioners will hold the chain?
To change the secondary tensioners did you have to remove the valve covers?
Hello and thanks for your answer. Now my next question if you could help me is: do I have to remove the oil pan in order to replace it? Thanks.
Yes, the lower engine oil pan will need to be removed to access some of the front timing cover bolts.
Can you introduce more about the brake caliper tool that you used in the video, like the exact tool name, brand and so forth please,? Thanks.

This it be the best time to change the water pump and the gaskets right where you were pointing ☝️ at the end of the video because they go out and is going to be the same work to get to it just like the time chain
So water pump
And gaskets
To be a absolutely amazing job done.
Do you know the name of the engine for the 2015 QX70? Also is the water pump chain or belt driven? Thanks
It is a chain driven water pump. The engine is a VQ37VHR engine
@@FixyourNissan thank you for your response.
you are brilliant dude......
Thanks! and Thank you for watching!
great video...is it possible to remove the timing chain access cover and then remove and replace the primary timing chain tensioner?
I really appreciate your help!! thanks
Glad my video put you more at ease. Yes, you just need to turn the cam back. The timing locations are the same as this video.
Iam in the middle of doing this. I have the engine at TDC the painted links are not at same position they are at on the install is the normal? Or do I have to make sure they are at those locations on install?
can this be done with the engine INSIDE the car? got a 03 infiniti g35 3.5
yes it can. I just made this video on a Engine that was removed. I always do these in the car
Thank you much!
Your welcome and thanks for watching!
Do it in the vehicle
Was the motor pulled to do the timing chain?
No it was removed to replace the engine. Since I had it out of the car, I did the video. But this timing chain work can be done in the car

You mentioned the "Y" shaped plate on the rear/back timing chain cover has a gasket behind it. If that gasket is blown, would that cause low oil pressure at idle on a 2006 Frontier 4.0L V-6?
Yes it can
FixyourNissan
Thanks I appreciate the reply.
+ocean zhu Ratting is a weak timing chain tensioner. Whining is when the upper chain tensioner guides wear out.
+FixyourNissan ight cool, thx!

Failure to do that, can result in the timing to jump a tooth or 2
@Sam S Yes, you remove the fuel pump fuse
Hold on for a second, so that’s how I find top dead Center. & if I don’t get the tool for preventing the fly wheel from moving, if it would move this is how I would resolve that?
Yes, you just need to have everything manually turned back into position
I will like have an advise from you with respect to my engine.
About a year ago my frontier entered water and it affected the engine. I had to change the engine block and the cam-shaft(under the engine). The issue now is when I start the engine there's a strange sound with in 5seconds after which it fades until i rev the engine. After some minutes of engine warm up the oil pressure guage drops and the oil light come on.
A mechanic around advised me to get a VQ35DE engine to replace it, that it is same, but i'm not sure of the performance on a truck.
Please I will like to have an advise from you on what to do to fix this engine as I really would not like to place a low-end engine as replacement.
uhm ?what was the torque on the cam bolts, you did tighten them, right, thanks for the info
This was a junk motor I used for the video. At the same time, I have done so many of them, I am use to the sound of the air gun when I tighten them to around where it would be tightened to spec

Yes, the lower engine oil pan has to be removed and there are 3 to 4 bolts that go up into the cover so it can be removed.
I suspect (haven't removed the pass.side tensioner cover yet to verify) that my 2003 VQDE's main timing chain tensioner nylon(?) glide has slipped down on the metal.

Thanks you very much. I will take a look at the chain and send the results.
Connecting rod broken... 😬
Being that the engine had sludge in it, did the intake cam phaser have to be soaked in a solvent or replaced ?
The intake sprockets would need to be replaced cause of the sludge in them

where do i get this gasket at for that Y shaped plate on the rear cover.. im putting a used engine in and when i went to take care of the timing chain for the hell of it i found out about this issue.
It's a Dealer Item only.
I know you can get it for a 2007 G35. Which is the same for all 3.5 engines and 3.7 Engines. If you try to get the gasket for a 3.7, it will show up unavailable.
Any precautions with the exhaust cam sprocket on the vq35de rev-up?
Will the crank spin without the chain on?
It can turn, it may not be able to turn all the way around cause the valves could be in the way.
Would I need to remove the timing cover and chain to replace the water pump? It looks like I would.
No you don't need to remove the engine to do that. This was a Engine already out of a car that was junk. So I used it to make the video
I have a 2010 g37 apart right now that has thrown p0011 and p0340 and it reads -3degrees bank 2 and -16 degrees bank 1 at idle any obvious signs I should look for that the vvt sprocket is bad?
Thanks for watching. You most likely either have a Timing that is jumped or a Bad Sprocket causing that.
It was the sprocket that we’re stuck. Replaced both and it was idling at 0 degrees give or take. Once I compared the new to old you could see that they were misaligned.
@Sam S from my understanding they should read at 0 degrees of advance at idle.
@Sam S I'm sure the engine timing should be that but when looking at what the cam sensors are reading at idle I believe it should be 0 degrees.
Cool bother very helpful 👊

I am changing water pump on my 2010 g37 and I have a few questions
Sure.. Ask away!
Hey guy... My yellow and orange marks no longer line up after i rotate the motor... Where did I go wrong?
That is normal. It would take 43 revolutions for those marks to all line up again
With that motor make sure to use all new 6mm and 8mm bolts. And take a tap to clear the holes. It's time consuming but worth it.
Only if I am replacing the complete back timing cover do I replace them.
Thank you for the quick response and a great video!! Won't that seal leak oil internally and possibly cause problems with the cam phaser operation?
I was told to put a slight dab of rtv on them? And check to be sure there is no blockage through the galley. Is that advisable?
If the chain broke, it maybe cheaper to replace the engine.
If a timing chain breaks, you can replace the timing chain. But you want to have valves checked. If the crank shaft breaks, then the whole engine would need to be rebuilt to replace the broken crank shaft, so it's cheaper to replace the engine at that point

Water pumps are rare. The only time they are normally changed is if they are leaking. Which would come out by the ac compressor area. If you have no leaks. Then it's most likely a coolant bleeding issue.

FixyourNissan
Yes it Was running "fine" with the rattle timing chain due to the guide rupture and timing piston totally extended, which I replaced
Did you get after market chains or OEM chains? Also did you disable the fuel system so it could build oil pressure first before starting?
FixyourNissan
The parts replaced are OEM, water pump, guide and timing chain pressure piston, and I did not remove the fuel pump before started, the chain and piston was making good tension
You have to disable the fuel system so when you are done you can turn the engine over to build oil pressure. Failure to do that will result in the timing chain to jump 1 to 2 teeth and if it's 2 teeth or more it won't start.
Do you know what codes it would show for this job?

13:00. Why is it necessary to align the colored parts of the chain with the dots? I don’t get it.
The timing marks on the chain and the timing marks on the sprockets ensure all your timing is lined up. So the timing chains are designed to have these colored links so if you put the engine at top dead center, it will line up with all the marks on the your sprockets and crank to ensure everything is timed properly
