Let's celebrate hitting 25K this month with a LIVE DIY diagnosis! Apparently y'all can't resist busted thrift finds either... so let's make a plan to make them beautiful!
In this live, we're gonna catch up a bit and then dive into the photos you sent me - ranging from "already beautiful but just needs a few tweaks" to "let's go back to the drawing board." I'll share my ideas and you can share yours too in the chat (or comments if you're watching later). Let's make these pieces work!

The stand is for hanging a parakeet cage. Seems to be pre 1950 by looking at the decorative base. Having a parakeet as a pet was once very popular.

I thought it might be a stand for a suit, but this makes so much more sense!

I think the marble top table is a turn of the century parlor table. It has the most value with original finish.

For the glass door china cabinet: could be cool to find knobs that are the same color as an accent in another part of the room. You could go with something pretty bright if the knobs are small or if the space is more eclectic

The first stand might also be cool to hand over to a textile artist to build out a shaggy, wooly tapestry that anchors to the frame.

The mullioned glass piece with the broken arch looks 1920-40s. They usually had a flame finial in the top, center.

Absolutely diss hobby lobby! If you are not aware, the owner of hb helped to bring about the overturn of Roe v. Wade. hb will never again receive one penny from me.

I’m sorry, but it’s not like he single-handedly brought about the overturn. Or even did much other than donate to causes that support anti abortion groups and lobbying. The overturn happened because the Texas Governor decided to make an abortion ban in the state for the sole purpose of being brought to the Supreme Court over it. The Supreme Court ruled that it is not in the power of the Supreme Court, but should rather be left up to states to decide. Because there are genuinely MILLIONS of people who don’t believe in abortion as a right. Including myself. And I’m not a bad person. So it sort of bums me out that you think someone who doesn’t believe in the same human rights as I do would use that as a reason to not patron my business? I shop at stores who are pro-abortion, because I don’t believe that someone who believes in abortion is fundamentally a bad person, but rather, misguided. It sucks, we have always had pro abortion and anti abortion people, and only in the past 15 years has the government figured out exactly how to pull the puppet strings to get us destroying each other over our differences.

I have a 70 inch round table that is on massive pedistal. Cut table down to size and install both pedistals as if they were one. Dowel the top together and remove runners for leaves. Place tape on each side of where you need to cut and use a very fine tooth new saw blade.
I have repaired, repurposed furniture for over 55 years and have done this several times.

Tip for rusty old metal if you want to leave it just as is, but slow the rusting process way down. Penetrol is an additive for oil-based paints that is meant to slow down the drying process (like floetrol but for oil based paint), but it can also be used to seal surfaces. It does give them a bit of a shine, but you ideally want to seal it after the penetrol, and then you can buff down the sealant with a fine steel wool for a more matte finish.
I have a super rusty trunk I'm restoring right now and it's done so much for the old tin of the exterior. It doesn't dry black like rust converter, which I really like. I wanted the real metal to show through.
Like I said, you do have to seal it though because penetrol stalls the rusting process and holds everything together, but doesn't actually seal it off from oxygen, so without a sealant it's going to continue rusting and chipping a lot more quickly than if you use a sealant to keep out oxygen.
You DO have to be very careful about letting any towels/rags that you use dry properly. It can spontaneously combust - so fair warning. But it's working amazing for me and my trunk is no longer leaving rust everywhere! :)

Quick note of caution on the large dining table: those massive aprons can limit your chair options later, i.e. chair arms. I have a client that has a similar idea and it kind of stymied our choices.

Re the dining table. I think a marble top would look great. I think you can do it and make it work. The legs alone are worth the buy.

Do the white top with linens and NOT the finish on the wood. I cut down a Danish dining room table and I don't recommend it. It's built in that way for a reason and it's onerous to try to change it. You have to be maximalist quirky to fit in a Blue Boy. Great video.

I think on the glass front vintage cabinet the pediment has screws holding it down. 2 screws and its off. No cutting needed

    • @richardvinsen2385

That cabinet is not at all my style but removing the pediment seems sacrilegious to me. I think it would strip away any of the style the cabinet has. Without the top, it would look like a 70s/80s Broyhill Furniture piece that they gave away as prizes on Wheel of Fortune.

The metal stand at the start could be sealed and used to hang a favourite coat or dress as background decor.
The wood games cabinet: Id remove the top part, line the back inside wall with wallpaper, and for the front side of the game boxes, Id adhere a piece of coordinating material so it looks like decor, and add a couple of decor pieces from the rest of the room in spare spots.

I've been thinking about the dining table in your front room. The one at the thrift is meant for the big English Breakfast room and it's a lovely piece, but it needs a big sideboard with a butler and toast and kippers and a big silver tea service. I think its a great library table. I think there are other tables out there for you.

The second cabinet with the games inside is a china cabinet. China and glassware in the top, silverware in the drawers, and tablecloths/mats/napkins and serving pieces in the bottom. That's the traditional use. These days, people use them a lot as a curio cabinet and extra storage.
