Hey, I wanted to thank you so much for making your videos! You have brought a lot of light for my understanding, including other sources, so that I can better understand my partner that has literally changed my life lol the more I learned the more my own life inside my own head seemed to clear up, despite being completely different than the males with high functioning autism haha the man I met has this and he is the most amazing man I met, despite draining myself trying to figure him out too much lol but I am learning by just asking him what he thinks and letting him know that he kinda needs to dumb it down for me and use basic words so I can understand XD also for me when he gets going, I have to ask that I need a painted pic verbally, which he tries but he also has the same issues haha but I've noticed that what he is talking about I can ask for him to point it physically if I don't understand what object he is describing :)
My son is 4 yrs old..he was delayed in talking, but he could spell.. Even at 3 yrs old, he barley talked but read" Friday" on my shirt.. He lines his toys, he does flap his hands sometimes. He has times when he acts like he's 17yr old..like If I try to talk to him, he gives me a kiss and goes back to what he's doing.. I just wish he would tell me what he's thinking.. He has qualities of both but at the same time he doesn't.. He was in special education at 3yrs old, with in 2 months he was " student of the month" but his teacher thought he had autism because he could do more than most..they hid the ABC's from all the kids, which made me upset.. But she said it was because the kids wouldn't do anything else..
With my Aspergers diagnosis I myself had no language delay in fact I was very articulate with a vast vocabulary and very analytical in my way of communicating with language but struggled with expressing emotion, understanding humor, or with what was appropriate to say to others and when it was my turn to speak. Oddly on the second point I struggled very much in mathematics but as I have mentioned before I was hyperlexic and obsessed over words and letters rather than numbers and truly surpassed all of my peers in reading literature, vocabulary, and comprehension. I was very much left behind in maths. I struggle with even basic math like making change or multiplication tables. For the last point I’ve never had my IQ tested but here in the US we have SATs and a lot of standardized testing in which I always scored very high. My maths were low but other scores made up for that. I just wanted to point out that maths don’t have to be your strong point as my therapist specializes in autism and says it’s common to have a very strong point (which could be math or not) and then a very opposite low point in a different academic area.
Same here, hyperlexia, artistic, science lover ....cant music or math though lol. I am noticing it seems about 50/50 on vids like these theres the reading and math sides it seems.
This reminds me of myself in some ways, Noelle Lynn. I was speaking sentences at one and could read at four. Lucky for me, because if I had to base my self-concept on my math ability, I may have spent my life in hiding.
As a person diagnosed with "Classic Autism" (Autism since birth - f84.0) I have to say that these are just generalized stereotypes and not actually true in many cases.

My son was diagnosed with ASD (level 1 - high functioning) but the evaluator told me that what he has was what they would have previously diagnosed as Aspergers. It's annoying that Aspergers is no longer diagnosed as such.
I was originally diagnosed prior to 2013, when they were still using Aspergers, and I was diagnosed with Aspergers but I was told it was part of the ASD by the clinician who diagnosed me.
"People with Asperger’s are good in math and music" Well, I am interested in learning on how to play the guitar and piano, but I can confidently say that I am horrible in math. No, seriously, everyone in my family is proficient in math, hell, my grandpa is a retired math professor and my dad is an engineer, but I seem to be the guy that just sucks in the family business.
Hate math and chemistry, nearly failed both senior year in HS many moons ago 😂 But tell me what makes your soul shine and your deeper thoughts and I am all 👂.
My Father would get so mad at me because I couldn't understand math as a kid"You have to be faking it,they say you have a high I Q. you're just lazy. I finally learned addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by rote memorization and can do it ,now. High math such as Algebra, calculus,Geometry and trigonometry might as well be a message from space aliens to me. I love music, love to sing but cannot create or play an instrument.
My son has high functioning autism but was initially diagnosed at the age of 2 1/2 with severe autism. He is 5 years old now and is still having trouble communicating his thoughts and at times expresses himself through Echolalia. At the age of 3 he was adding, multiplying and subtracting. He can count in 8 different languages, likes astronomy, has “perfect pitch” (absolute pitch) and can play piano and recognizes chords/ notes in different instruments and now is interested in the periodic table (it’s a big subject so he’s just starting). I mention all this because he absolutely does not have Aspergers and he’s into science, math and music, this is not solely an Aspergers thing. They are all so different. The only relatable truth to this discription between the two in my son’s case is the language delay. He has always had perfect pronounciation but the ability to communicate and to speak are more complex than that. He still struggles despite him being intelligent. He has a real hard time transitioning, waiting and is self directed.

My daughter is 8...we recieved her diagnosis in April, Asperger's with ADHD, anxiety and OCD. She struggles with the anxiety but we have been treating it and that seems to calm everything down a notch. Thank you for your videos...they give me insight and understanding...which I think is the utmost important thing so I watch videos and read a lot. I want to educate myself so that I can be the mom she needs...her advocate. :) Please keep making these. You have no idea how important they are.
The Aspie World That's sweet...sometimes (during extreme meltdowns) I feel like the opposite of amazing. lol That is a part of the learning, though... right? :) Thanks, again and I look forward to future videos. Merry Christmas. :D

I have one son with Asperger’s and the other with high functioning autism. Your descriptions are exactly right! The son with Asperger’s grew up in Gifted and Talented classes. His brother grew up in special Ed. One brother spoke early on; the other brother didn’t speak until age 4. They are now 21 (with Asperger’s) with a full-time successful job, and 18 in college full time. They both graduated high school with a 4.0! I love your accurate description of each diagnosis. Thank you!

I’m confused now...I was diagnosed with AS, but since I am so bad at maths and also struggled in school with lots of things, it seems I fall under the category as High functioning. Yet now my IQ is now classed as above average. Baffled 😯 (I was not delayed in speech)
I'm not diagnosed with anything, but I have almost Mensa level IQ and also completely sucked at school. The main reason for this is that I can only concentrate and memorize things I'm genuinely interested in. It's not that I don't understand other things, it's just that my focus automatically swifts towards things I happen to be interested in. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case for an Aspie too.
Sweet 'N Sour Same. I was kind of an average student, but most of that was due to my interests not being engaged in school (I was interested in drawing and building stuff). I didn't even think I had high intelligence until it got tested and it came back pretty high!
I am an Asperger and I would like to say that in time tables I was the best of the class, same with dividing, subtracting and adding but, that's all, not all Aspergers are good at math, I HATE THESE STEREOTYPES, we just happen to be really good at things that we are passionate about.

I was diagnosed with high-functioning autism about an hour or two ago despite picking up two languages quickly as a child and having an above average IQ. My psychologist said that they were just diagnosed as the same thing and diagnosed me with high-functioning autism.
I was diagnosed at 2 with High Functioning Autism when I was young, when they differentiated both. Yet, i speek very fluently 2 languages, Have An Above Average IQ on the brink of Gifted, Am very good at Math, Science, Music, History and Geography, have made multiple friends in different environments, whether its school, sports teams, neighbours, or when I met the children of many of my parents friends, and have barely ever been bulied. Their is really no difference in between the 2 which is why they got rid of the term Aspergers. The way they differentiated back then was based on if the person at a very young age like 2 for example had developed communication to an adequate level. However, this was completely stupid because it does not mean you developp something slightly later in your childhood or life for that matter, that you are gonna worse at it than someone who has developed it earlier. There is no corrolation between the age you learn to walk for example and how good of an athlete you will be. This is why they got rid of the term Aspergers. Because, it did not proove anything, and because there is basically no difference in between that and high functioning autism. Certain people with high functioning autism communicate better than certain people who where diagnosed with Aspergers and vice versa, It really only depends on the individual.

I am positive on several online ASD and Aspie tests. In the US the terms Aspergers and high-functioning autism have been totally discontinued (I want to say 'banned'!) and it is all just on the spectrum. I am desperately trying to jump through hoops to get a formal diagnosis. This has helped. I know I am an Aspie but I want to be diagnosed to fully explain my whole Life. I am 70!
Fascinating. As a self diagnosed ‘Aspie’, latish in life, I am certain that the three differences you mentioned are major ones which it is easily missed. Because we have a high IQ we go undiagnosed because we find workarounds and think we are unlucky. If we regularly got diagnosed earlier in life NTs would be more aware of our abilities and forgiving of some of the issues. As it is we are just discarded as employees time after time. I am struggling with my own business but I’m hoping that being more aware of the ‘disadvantages’ will help.

There is a difference, and you nailed it. My son was initially diagnosed Aspie at 13, but was re-daignosed as HFA after further assessment, primarily because he only had a vocab of approx 5 words at age 2. Watching him grow up and the friends he collected, it was very easy to tell those with autism vs the Aspies. I would add there is a physicality to autism that differs from Aspergers - in my experience, Autistic people have a distinctive posture and manner in their speech that also sets them apart from Aspies.

I got this herbal supplement from Dr Oyalo channel and used it on my son for 4week and within the period of using it there was positive changes which really urge me to continue and I can say my son is free from autism now.
My diagnosis was “high functioning autism” on the spectrum, however I am pretty sure this is due to the fact they do not use the term aspergers anymore. I have all of the signs of aspergers, I find it quite strange they removed the word from current diagnosis’
Rektro probably cos there's so much overlap. I remember when the DSM5R was being develop.... various folks in the many scientific and medical fields, etc couldn't agree on WHICH traits are "Autism" vs Aspergers. A lot of people wanted to keep Aspergers as an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Others wanted Aspergers to have its own dx and codes, etc ( bc "autism" is "bad" & a horrible. crippling dx, etc. and/or some aspies are offended at being lumped together with Autistics). Pretty much everything I've read....it comes down to language development. That ONE trait makes the difference in a differential dx....Part of prob with DSM5R is people like me: I have most of the other traits of autism, that "mark" me as FULLY AUTISTIC...but, incredibly verbal at early age, LARGE vocab, etc. So, they decided to put it all on the Spectrum...If not for my verbal/language abilities I'd be dx'd HFA. Hope this helps. Peace.
@Angel some people are both Aspie and gifted so yeah, you can get most of the common aspie traits but not some of the most recurrent ones. Take routines for exemple, I can stay in there for a loooong time but then I suddenly get the urge to do TON of new things as fast as possible, more like gifted aka multipotential people tend to do. I'm also dxed with ADHD and I tend to switch from hyppo to hyper in the same way depending on stimulation etc... The joy of being complex lol ;P
Christian Malo yup. that was my point... it's just a continuum, like most everything in this world that results in, or "requires" a, dx....people be people, either way. But a lot of people I've encountered want it to be a black or white proposition...either you have autism (regardless of function level) or you have aspergers. Also, even with the increase in awareness...a lot of folks still fear a dx of "autistic" or HFA for their kids or themselves- it's still a negative word in a lot of circles...maybe one day it won't matter.
My daughter has Asperger’s she spoke mimicking words at 3 months old, words at 6 months old a conversation at 14 months old. She read and spelled her name at 18 months and her drawing began at that age as well. She’s an artist with a degree in computer animation but her anxiety is holding her back. She’s only 22 and has her bachelors as of age 20 so I’m leaving her to grow into her career. She has severe anxiety and math learning disability but it was a shock when she was dx at 15 because I always thought all people who were on the spectrum were delayed in speech. Apparently that’s not always the case.

No wonder my son confussed the experts. He had a lot of language delay - he ended up in a specialist speech and language unit at school before they diagnosed his autism (at age 8) - however he is extremely intelligent and has no problems with maths and science. His great love is computers and especially computer security so much so that his Dad who works in IT is having to scramble to keep up so he can guide his interest along safe paths!

I don't have a question, I just want to say thank you for your videos. My daughter is on the spectrum, under old DSM Aspergers now just ASD. She is verbal but sometimes doesn't know how to explain what she needs, feels, or how she thinks. I can do all the research in the world but I love following your channel because you can say you've been there (even if her symptoms are different). We've used some things from your videos and it makes a world of difference for her. Thank you so much!

I've always been terrible at math, English language arts have always been my strongsuit. Watching movies as a kid I was able to download a large vocabulary, that i would be able to use as an adult. However as i got older, my confidence and eagerness to communicate has diminished I rarely take the initiative to socialize with strangers. Takes me a while to warm up to a new crowd at work. Love the content, keep it coming.
I excel at science, math, and loved my astronomy class. I'm obsessed with the stars and galaxies, and planets. And in college I loved my anatomy and physiology class. I once wrote a complete whole whiteboard chart of the whole anatomy of all the systems in the body because the teacher needed help doing so and I did so without even looking in my textbook but by memory. Everyone was shocked.
Wow, I have Asperger's, and this pretty much describes me exactly! I get obsessed with things as soon as I hear or read something about them that piques my interest e.g aircraft, fossils (I used to dig for fossils during playtime from age 5-12, basically the whole of primary school, and would find little fossil shells called "brachipods", it took me years to find out their name!) I have been obsessed with mathematics all my life. I taught myself undergraduate analytic number theory after I finished teaching myself the full A-level maths course during GCSE, I want to become a research mathematician. And I can play a piece of music on the piano nearly exactly as it is after having listening to it once (however my dyspraxia gets in the way of how fast I can play the song). However it would be a stretch to even call me average at every other aspect of life.
peanut dawg. Cool! What degree do you have? I'm in a-levels. But I find a- level maths too easy (because I already taught it to myself during the first year of GCSE), so I teach myself Complex analysis because I have finished teaching myself the analytic number theory, undergraduate level and am moving to graduate level. but can not continue due to my lack of knowledge in analysis. I have SOO MUCH maths information to give right now and typing is becoming extremely frustrating because my mind is ahead of my hands!! I prefer analytic number theory to algebraic.
Oh wow, the P vs NP problem, one of the hardest millennium problems! It is well out of my desired field of study, analytic number theory. If I am to work on anything to do with computer science, it would probably be cryptography as it is mostly number theory.
Aspergers is what they called ASD or HFA back in the day. Usually older people will use that term if they have been diagnosed with ASD prior to the change. Aspergers is now referred to as ASD or HFA.
The organization issues stem from executive function disorder, which many people with autism and/or ADHD have. Autism is kind of like an umbrella for many disorders, like exec function and sensory processing.
I did average on my GCSE exams (I got mostly Cs) but I noticed a pattern that all the exams I didn’t do so well on were exams that included essay questions 😂 I had to actually resit my English exam 7 times before I passed it also I am the most disorganised person ever
It is typical to have very uneven abilities. To excel in some things but not others in a more uneven manner than neurotypicals. My son has autism 1, and his math skills have blown away me away since he was two years old. He mentions calculations casually in the middle of a sentence that we have to use a calculator for, since he was 4 or something. He learned to read on his own before school, we weren't ever aware. Very intelligent boy. But he can't tie his shoes. He has huge troubles explaining mathematical problems, writing it down explaining the calculations step by step. His memory is crazy. I can say "remember when we went to that place that had nice ice cream? And he'd say" yes, it was the fifth of April 2014. But it is all about logic and patterns. Language are patterns, numbers are patterns, they have rules. Give him an abstract problem, and he will be at loss. And this is pretty typical. Passing exams are stressful, lots of people around, scraping of chairs and a lot of thing that distract. Being disorganized, I think it is (from my experience) that if something is not important, then why on earth bother to do it, it does not make sense. Also, time is fluid, and executive functions are different. To know how to start and how to finish. To know where to begin. Schedules are a great help with this. Sorry this is getting way too long, I always write too much, haha
Good job Dan! I think you’re correct my friend. I think we can definitely mesh together in similar aspects of HFA and Aspergers and such a point of functioning at such a high level we can mask it and people have no clue that we are on the spectrum. Great video!

Then is definitely not Asperger, unless you have selective mutism. The age you start to talk count greatly in the differences between As and HFA. As well as IQ: 100 and above - As, 100 and below - HFA.
I feel like you make it seem much more simple than it is, and this is one of the reasons why the umbrella term of ASD/ASC is now used and why "high/low functioning" are unhelpful. My son, who is diagnosed with ASD (along with other conditions) is both high and low functioning, as are many others. He had a speech delay and can now be selective mute or use characters to speak through but he is very capable of speech and has a very extensive vocabulary and understanding of language that probably exceeds average for his age. A combination of factors including executive function difficulties, motor difficulties and demand avoidance mean he is low functioning when it comes to many very simple self care tasks, yet he is highly intelligent. I have heard this described as a "spiky profile". I have also often become frustrated when people who are non-verbal are presumed to be "low-functioning" or have severe learning difficulties; Naoki Higashida is just one great example of how wrong this assumption is.
I always say that I am HFA but, in truth, I have Aspergers because all 3 Aspergers criteria you mentioned apply to me. Still, the 2 are so similar that it doesn't really matter once you are an adult. The distinction matters more when you are dealing with children and you are looking for signs to make a diagnosis. Great video, as always :-) Thanks !
This is insane! Your channel is God sent because it has clarified so much. I’ve been trying to get diagnosis for a child for so long and finally get why they don’t want to give it. It’s all social stigma. But it’s draining my pockets without it. You have just given me hope.

Thanks for this. I know in my case my high IQ was developed for my ability to cope. But I didn't know I had a high IQ until I was tested, because I assumed because things took me longer and I struggled I wasn't as smart. What I have come to accept is that I had to become smarter to deal with my learning disabilities & produce in school at the same rate as others. Even though I struggled I couldn't have kept up at all if my IQ wasn't very developed.

Thank You
I got diagnosed last year. Was told "asperger" wasn't used anymore. It would be asd. I'm diagnosed with aspergers. I'm rubbish with maths, music, writing. Still don't really understand how it all works. I'm 43
Totally agree! I am very knowledgeable in the field and have a son in Engineering at local University (where I work as well) and agree with the prevalence of those with Aspergers relative symptoms in intense science fields. My son shares these characteristics as well and working on my end to attempt to create group programs to assist in what students feel are missing skills to help in these fields and majors to help students with those or similar characteristics. Your personal insight is inspiring and will share with my son who sometimes is very down because of the social isolation and anxiety aspects and may feel comforted knowing others with awesome personalities and intelligence just like him are out there and that you are all unique and amazing stellar people that are so necessary and perfect in our world

Me and my friend have Aspergers. It's amazing how we have the same condition, yet have different things that we excel at. I excel at writing and I'm obsessed with dinosaurs, video games, science, anime, TV shows and movies. My friend excels at music (the keyboard and the guitar) she can play songs by ear and picks it up extremely quickly, she also excels in art and languages, especially Japanese. She loves wolves, anime and a game called Dangarunpa We literally understand each other because of our autism and it's one of the best friendships I could ask for
Hi, Iam diagnosed with aspergers but the more i been watching your videos i think functioning autism is more how i am. I also got ADD and been struggling with loads of depression for a long time now. My family doesn't want to understand and jokes that everyone got some ADHD and its something to just go on with. Just want to thank you for making these videos as they helped me to feel less alone.
Fascinating. I was great at math until 9th grade when the emphasis was on calculating math "mentally". For whatever reason, I struggled immensely and for the first time *ever* I wasn't achieving the highest in school. I ended up becoming a social scientist with expertise in statistics, but then I nearly failed statistics in my first year of university. Anyway, very helpful, thank you.

Henry Austin Same here. Especially if I order something from a site like Amazon, I pay a little extra for them to wrap it. Funny, I'm good at other fine motor skills like typing and playing the piano.
Thank you for bringing up the topic. I am autistic but was not diagnosed until 32. I get thrown in the aspie pool where I drown. I have discalculia and central auditory processing disorder with Dyspraxia and sensory processing disorder. I worked very hard to get through school but had no idea that everybody else did not have to stay up all night to get things done. I dropped out the first semester of college. Thank you for pointing out the differences because I have been claiming they were not the same. Not that any of us are of course.

I’ve been searching for a definition and symptoms of high functioning autism, vs. Aspergers but can’t find anything that truly defines it or gives examples that make an elevated distinction, so thank you for this. I was a straight A student, early development and was walking and talking well before the norm. I can say that I hate math, except geometry. I loved it. I excelled at artistic things and writing over math and science. I did enough to get an A in classes I didn’t like and didn’t look back. Lol. I took a test and was even more confused. My doctor said I had ADHD and was high functioning. But high functioning what? The test said that I had traits it says I have both neurodiverse and neurotypical traits. What does that really mean? I am more of a social introvert but I do enjoy being around people and talk to them. I just don’t like or need to be around them 24/7. It’s too draining. The more stress at work the less I want to engage and be around friends or family when I’m off. I like to recharge and sometimes veg out. I also suck at small talk and it doesn’t seem genuine so I do tend to avoid large social gatherings where I have to be around a lot of people I don’t know.

Have you done a video about isolation? Would you ever consider doing one? I've been isolated for 4 years and I want to make friends I just don't have the skills to do it so end up being rejected or bullied. I've not managed to keep a job either because of depression and poor social skills. I'm going to buy your book as I think it will fit in well with my CBT and mindfulness. Thanks for your videos they have been so helpful with understanding whats going on

He just needs to know what is going on around him , and sticking to a very organised and explained rota for each day he spends with me has been a tool i can honestly say has worked wonders, Would't change him for the world.

I'm so grateful to find more autistic vloggers. I've only just started talking about autism on my channel but people keep asking me if I have aspergers because I seem high functioning (not that it would be a problem if I did). I'll be sharing this with other people when they ask these questions.
I was diagnosed with Asperger’s almost 17 years ago, but my math and science has always been horrid (never excelled in it). However I did excellent in creativity (writing, music, cooking). Now I’m wondering if I am HFA instead.
Asperges is no longer used Today its autism spectrum disorder. Though for practical reasons I always say I'm autistic or have Aspergers as the general public tend to know of it, even if they don't know exactly what the condition is.
I'm close to start the ASD diagnostic process, and I also are diagnosed with Dyslexia. I haven't checked yet if you already have done a video on autism vs OCD but I at least would be interested in learning more about that. I probably would been diagnosed with Asperger before it became a part of ASD
Thank you so much. I was formally diagnosed a year ago ASD 1, just before the quarantine began, thus have been attempting to sort it all out via only an online community. After the initial diagnosis euphoria wore down, I became more and more confused as to why I did not easily fit in with groups with the Aspergers designation. This is the first time I understand why. The Aspergers designation does not apply to me High functioning autism does. I think the challenge for our community is to allow ourselves to recognize and acknowledge these differences, while never seeing any category as somehow superior or inferior to any other. I understand myself so much better since watching this video. I cannot thank you enough. I

I was diagnosed with High Functioning Autism at the age of four. My mum said I knew complicated words like blackbird and mushroom - I just didn't form any sentences. Also I was gifted and talented in science, and science was my best subject. However, maths was my weak point and it took a lot of work for me to get the first B grade in my set. In fact I could have been in the top set in maths if I got on well with the teacher - but because I didn't I stayed in the 4th set instead (middle of the sets basically).
I got this herbal supplement from Dr Oyalo channel and used it on my son for 4week and within the period of using it there was positive changes which really urge me to continue and I can say my son is free from autism now.
hi, dan! i'm so happy i have found your channel. six months ago we found out that our son(7yo) has autism (level 1), in the usa there is not Aspergers anymore, just levels of autism. up until now i was in denial and thought the doctor was wrong because my son does not present the classical signs of autism. we suspected ADD. he started speaking very early and big words, he is very social...but has some other things that we as parents didn't know how to go about and had him tested. he is exactly the way you have just said in this video, very verbal, very good in science, gifted in visual-spatial, very talented with music, he can listen to an audiobook and then quote passages from it, can understand geometry but fails in simple computations. it was hard for us to take the autism diagnostic. but now, your videos have brought light :) our son does have sensory issues, low processing speed mostly for everyday tasks, he's very emotional, obsessed with airplanes, helicopters, spaceships :))) and overall has some quirks that sometimes make him fun to be around and sometimes not. it is still difficult to deal with everything because he is so smart in some areas and so childish in other and i don't always know how to adjust. we homeschool and i just don't understand how he can be so advanced in some areas, like doing middle school science, but just struggling with other much simple tasks, like remembering to put shoes on when leaving the house. would be possible to make a video with advice for parents like how to deal with different situations, how to parent a high functioning autistic child, maybe even a video about gifted autistic people. thanks!
Personally, I sort of agree that it's a good thing they've done away with terms like Asperger and High-Functioning Autism, because they produce expectations that are so often wrong. I'm definitely on the spectrum myself, but I'm in many ways the opposite of an Asperger, and really don't fit any other classification either. BTW, I share your overwhelming interest in UFOs etc., and I'd enjoy discussing it some time.

I really like you videos, very informative. My son was diagnosed at 4 years (he's 11 today) and I never knew the difference between autism and asperger's. Thank you for your explanations. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder seems to be a generic answer because no one ever brought up the possibility of asperger's, which now by watching your videos leads me to believe this should have been brought up. It seems to fit his mannerisms and development.

I think everything has so much overlap now because all the definitions are so different. My special education textbook literally says that in the medical community, HFA, AS and ASD are essentially synonymous with PDD NOS. Also for some reason I’ve heard of people becoming offended at the HFA label. I can’t really wrap my head around why, let me know if I’m wrong but for people on spectrum I think a sudden noise is a thousand times worse a trigger than a label that belongs in our community.
Ive been blessed to be high functioning autitstic. I love my aspergers tho. Took a while cuz i absolutely hated that part of myself when i first found out but now i wouldnt give it up if i could. It's the greatest friend ive ever had :)
I have high-functioning autism. I've always been the kind who struggles with maths, yet, I'm super creative of coming up with drawing pictures out of my head that the other kids at school thought I was pretty good for my age at the time. I did have a speech delay until I was 6 and I sometimes struggle to put words into sentences whenever I have conversations face to face with people, but writing is a lot more easier as I have time to think of how to construct my sentences and get across to what I want to say.
Sam Farrow same I have it too and I didn't start speaking until 4 I spoke fully at 5. I didn't know how to make conversations until 10 and I do struggle amdamically and socially . I hate my autism even if it high functioning . my cousin has apersgers and she got an early diagnosis like me and she way better than me . she has nice friends , high IQ , good at languages and great social skills . people with apersgers are so lucky well maybe not adults
@@classicnobody9872 Making friends is definitely hard when it comes down to language and communication, because I have to really think about what the person means or is saying otherwise I'd get it at the wrong end of the stick. Speaking of people with aspergers. My girlfriend was diagnosed with that condition and didn't have speech delay but still has a hard time talking to people.
Sam Farrow I'm sorry to hear that she does . Yeah I usually addienctly offend or insult people alot it got me banned from the south park amino . Well I can only speak English I can't do other languages at school and my best friend was a nacisst Who I left and 4 other girls . I was Cyper bullied and bullied
@@classicnobody9872 That's not good. I also write punk rock songs which help me express myself and communicate with people a lot better, and also like you pointed out about bullying, discrimination and ignorance from people, the lyrics speak about those subjects in a fairly aggressive manner in order to let off some steam, lol.
This is true my son was diagnosed with high functioning autism and he struggles in all three of the categories that you portrayed in the video This was a very informative video
I have Asperger's and ADHD, and as a child I was totally disconnected from school, people, etc, but when puberty kicked in I became hyper focused on music and architecture. I learned every instrument I could get my hands on, I was writing symphonies in middle school through high school, as well as designing homes on a CAD program. I also went from being horrendous at maths to rather good. I can't help but wonder if puberty jump started something in my brain.
Sometimes puberty can reconstruct the brain in certain ways. Theres is a interesting study based on puberty and the increase of intelligence or decrease intelligence based on genetics from family members I think its quite interesting.
Interesting video! Thanks for sharing. Also wanted to add my own two cents. I was diagnosed with ASD at 18 months and (apparently-I don't really remember) had severe cognitive impairments growing up. Didn't talk till age 5, challenges with math, etc. However, nowadays I'm pretty well rounded and do really well in pretty much all subjects. This includes math, sciences, fine arts, languages, etc. Also scored in the top 1% for IQ at age 9. So even though I noticed several differences btwn your video and my experience, I found it really informative and cool. Thanks again!

I am currently doing a presentation based off of my personal experience of having Aspergers syndrome and working in the sports industry and stumble across your channel. All I can say is that this is the most accurate and relatable depiction of autism and aspergers that I have found while researching that skips over all of them medical jargon and is easy to understand.

When I was given an iq test I somehow achieved a 132. My son after his neuropsych we were told he has an iq of 120. He was advanced in his early childhood development and I get crazy looks when I tell the Drs. This
I was diagnosed with ASD / Asperger's syndrome. From their medical psychiatric services, she says that I have a math disability, and I wouldn't disagree, I've struggled with math for a long time and get frustrated that I can't do those things very well. With music, I like to listen to it, and play it if I can, but I don't think I can sing, and when I get sheet music, I need time to write out all the notes out so I can read it better. I've had a hard time trying to coordinate using both hands in piano classes, I can usually only use my right hand, or my right hand just takes over. I'm glad I'm not taking piano class anymore, it causes me too much frustration.
Well, now I understand why I was put somewhere in between the two, but I'm still confused of where exactly I belong. In a way, ASD instead of the two being separated makes things easier for me. I show signs of both, some things indicate aspergers and other things imply autism. Although, my math teacher asked me once if I had Aspergers because I couldn't remember his methods and I was teaching him new methods.
so true my Asperger son was in trigonometry at age 10 and microbiology at aged 10 as well. his i.q. was 203 and was what he referred to as a maths and sciences savant. he had a friend who was a high functioning asd kid and i say "friend" in the loosest form, they were always in each others company playing video games...which they were extremely and equally awesome at...but they basically talked "at" each other rather than "to" each other. outside of video games they basically sat separately among us and had typical autistic tics
Hi. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy and appreciate your channel. Thank you very much for this video in particular. Looking forward to more!
I was diagnosed with aspergers but had a delay in speech, excelled in maths/science and have a higher iq. So I think it's hard to tell the difference between the two.

The math one is definitely not true lol. I'm aspergers and terrible at math. Specifically I have discalculia, but I've always been "gifted" in language and writing/reading (literature in general)
As a parent and early child educator I can identify many of the traits described in your video with human development that is in evolution. What is needed is time to accept individuals as all being unique and with innate talents early on in their lives instead of holding them to the standards of the status quo. We are too quick to place labels or see faults in these individuals. In my experience many parents are frustrated and disappointed that their child has a defect that needs to be fixed rather than to nurture and support them to excel in whatever their child is passionate about. Our son is 23yrs old he has dyslexia and many of the traits you described for Aspies which as a parent I embrace as a huge gift. He started and runs his own successful businesses since he was 19 year old. In my experience I suggest that we all throw away the labels think out of the box and appreciate differences as a very positive influence in all our lives. Thanks Dan for being that positive inspirational person.
I can't agree with throwing away the labels. I lived the first 30 years of my life without the term autism and thought I was unique. By having the term athiesm, I'm able to explain to those I meet why I act the way I do. I also get to see videos like this, that help me understand myself.
@@davidvarley1812 The labels I refer to are the limits that some people including parents stick on you and don't allow you to be fully be valued or included into society. I am happy that you have found your strengths and understanding through an assessment or diagnosis by a professional not a label which can limit expectations of your true worth. Thanks so much for sharing this with me as I must always be open to the views of others as important as yourself.
@@BUBCvision I must admit I am concerned that labels such as athiesm are used by individuals and governments to determine a persons potential. My parents never accept the idea of autism and from a young age I understand I'd have to work round my problems. I attended a special education school and while I went onto full time employment and a independent life, many of classmates whose initial abilities were high than mine, went onto welfare. A significant number of my former classmates are either alcoholics or drug dependents and three of the girls, I went to school with have children in state care. Many of those I went to school with are known to the police, courts and prisons. Some suffer from mental illness and a few of them are now dead which given I'm middle aged, is a depressing fact. The way labels like autism have been used by them and for them, as had a negative impact on their lives and the community they live within. So I think you have a point. A label is useful if used to assist the person, like I used my diagnosis but shouldn't be used as an excuse to hold back the individual. Have a nice day.

My high functioning autistic son is a senior in HS... he has been accepted into a couple of colleges and is going away this fall 😭😭😭... lol he's leaving but I'm proud of him.
I didn't have any speech delay as a kid, but I did have serious struggles in math, and all other school subjects, however i'm very gifted at art... I seem to be a mix
I have asperges but I suck at math and excel in some aspects of English/ language arts when I was in school I had an above average vocabulary . I did excel in Science until lots of math was involved . I also excelled in history when I was in school.
My son was diagnosed with Autism though he would have been diagnosed with Asperger's had he gotten his diagnosis just one year sooner. His doctor uses the more current diagnosis methods. He has a very high IQ and strong language skills. An Autism diagnosis has helped him get services and school accommodations he might not have gotten otherwise. Before his diagnosis, he didn't qualify for anything because his grades were top of his class. The diagnosis forced the school to consider his social and emotional needs. I think people think of Aspies as having it together more, though that may or may not be the case and depends on the individual. So they are less likely to accommodate for children with that diagnosis over one with Autism that gets more publicity. My doctor is of the opinion, "who cares what people call it as long as we get him help where and when he needs it." :)

The Aspie World My diagnoses is very gray.

Yes yes, all strong Asperger traits.

Please keep making these. You have no idea how important they are.

It is a bottle blurry as these are just diagnostic naming not everyone will Be text book :).
The Aspie World Thanks Dan for letting me know that. Really enjoyed the live Q&A yesterday, thanks for being such a inspiration.
My math skills are awful. Though Thats probably due to my ADD.
I am an Asperger and I would like to say that in time tables I was the best of the class, same with dividing, subtracting and adding but, that's all, not all Aspergers are good at math, I HATE THESE STEREOTYPES, we just happen to be really good at things that we are passionate about.
Yes this is true.

I was diagnosed with high-functioning autism about an hour or two ago despite picking up two languages quickly as a child and having an above average IQ. My psychologist said that they were just diagnosed as the same thing and diagnosed me with high-functioning autism.
That’s interesting!
____ ______ same for my son, he was diagnosed as HFA but the doctor kept saying Aspegers and saying HFA is the new name but he is aspergers

I'm not sure about the number of words spoken at 2. the world is full of NT children who don't speak before the age of 3.
My diagnosis was “high functioning autism” on the spectrum, however I am pretty sure this is due to the fact they do not use the term aspergers anymore.
I have all of the signs of aspergers, I find it quite strange they removed the word from current diagnosis’
Yeah it’s kind of annoying.
The Aspie World really enjoy your content, Dan 😁
Keep It up!

That's amazing!! I've been trying to memorize at least the most important parts of the human body and still keep forgetting.
Finally! Somebody is talking about this! Nobody seems to clarify anything about the difference and it it's had me confused for a while indeed!
Yeah it is a bit of a difficult one to cover / talk about.
Hey thanks for all the info!
That sounds almost exactly like me
+Filip you also like number theory?
peanut dawg.
Can you explain why some aspergers people may be obviously intelligent but not very good at passing gcse exams and also very disorganised.
Yes good idea. Basically it is the learning type
The organization issues stem from executive function disorder, which many people with autism and/or ADHD have. Autism is kind of like an umbrella for many disorders, like exec function and sensory processing.
@@TheAspieWorld yes, please, make a video about how autistic people learn.
Yeah!

Yeah.

Yeah it’s very interesting how we deal with things and the IQ boost.

Just FYI. Aspergers doesn’t exist anymore as a technical term.
So, I'm working towards getting a diagnosis evaluation, if/when I get diagnosis it will just say, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and not Aspergers?
MathildaDee_Lillyluvsanime Yea that’s how it works these days.
I got diagnosed last year. Was told "asperger" wasn't used anymore. It would be asd. I'm diagnosed with aspergers. I'm rubbish with maths, music, writing. Still don't really understand how it all works. I'm 43
So is Aspergers technically the same as high functioning autism now?
@@chocolatedoughnut1305 Yea pretty much.

I have obsessions, but very dark. It ranges from WW2 to ted Bundy. Not that I want to act out the actions but I just get fascinated.
She loves wolves, anime and a game called Dangarunpa
We literally understand each other because of our autism and it's one of the best friendships I could ask for
Yeah that’s the interesting part about the condition.

My brother was diagnosed high functioning..but has excelled in math and Science..
Oh yeah! He sounds awesome!!!
I was initially told that I should be bad at math with Asperger's. At first I was until my hyper focus progressed my interest to learn it.

Thanks for your videos they have been so helpful with understanding whats going on
I was just thinking about this! I will do a video on it.
Thanks man! :)

Have you ever thought about doing yoga?its a great introduction to mindfulness and to meet people . It could help you socially as well.
Katie Garrett
I haven't thought of that before. I'll speak to my therapist about it. I do struggle to stay focused with mindfulness because I'm meant to sit still and I stim quite a bit so could help there. Thank you for suggesting this

It couldn’t greatly improve your focus. Good luck !
my beautiful grandson has been diagnosed with aspergers he has lots of little things he struggles with but he is a joy . He just needs to know what is going on around him , and sticking to a very organised and explained rota for each day he spends with me has been a tool i can honestly say has worked wonders, Would't change him for the world.

Your OCD is broken, the picture to the left of you is not balanced on the wall it’s driving me crazy. Please fix it.
My oldest son has Asperger's & I was recently diagnosed as a higher functioning autistic. Once I was diagnosed, a lot of things about me started to make more sense, like pieces of a puzzle. I've been trying to learn more about Asperger's & understand asd/asc. Ty for these videos.

I'm so grateful to find more autistic vloggers. I've only just started talking about autism on my channel but people keep asking me if I have aspergers because I seem high functioning (not that it would be a problem if I did). I'll be sharing this with other people when they ask these questions.
Oh cool! Thank you so much! It’s so awesome to have you here!!!
I was diagnosed with Asperger’s almost 17 years ago, but my math and science has always been horrid (never excelled in it). However I did excellent in creativity (writing, music, cooking). Now I’m wondering if I am HFA instead.
Possibly or just that all Aspies are different in their skill sets :).
Don't second guess your diagnosis due to this video.
Asperges is no longer used
Today its autism spectrum disorder.
The Aspergers designation does not apply to me
High functioning autism does.
I think the challenge for our community is to allow ourselves to recognize and acknowledge these differences, while never seeing any category as somehow superior or inferior to any other.
I understand myself so much better since watching this video.
I cannot thank you enough.

In fact I could have been in the top set in maths if I got on well with the teacher - but because I didn't I stayed in the 4th set instead (middle of the sets basically).

hi, dan! i'm so happy i have found your channel. six months ago we found out that our son(7yo) has autism (level 1), in the usa there is not Aspergers anymore, just levels of autism. up until now i was in denial and thought the doctor was wrong because my son does not present the classical signs of autism. we suspected ADD. he started speaking very early and big words, he is very social...but has some other things that we as parents didn't know how to go about and had him tested. he is exactly the way you have just said in this video, very verbal, very good in science, gifted in visual-spatial, very talented with music, he can listen to an audiobook and then quote passages from it, can understand geometry but fails in simple computations. it was hard for us to take the autism diagnostic. but now, your videos have brought light :) our son does have sensory issues, low processing speed mostly for everyday tasks, he's very emotional, obsessed with airplanes, helicopters, spaceships :))) and overall has some quirks that sometimes make him fun to be around and sometimes not. it is still difficult to deal with everything because he is so smart in some areas and so childish in other and i don't always know how to adjust. we homeschool and i just don't understand how he can be so advanced in some areas, like doing middle school science, but just struggling with other much simple tasks, like remembering to put shoes on when leaving the house. would be possible to make a video with advice for parents like how to deal with different situations, how to parent a high functioning autistic child, maybe even a video about gifted autistic people. thanks!

@@TheAspieWorld did subscribe and enjoy your videos :) very informative! tks

Yes, it has become so vague and imprecise, it has been changed in favor of the "level 2 and 3" ASD.

Yeah totally, that’s why I favour the ASC description now.
Ive been blessed to be high functioning autitstic. I love my aspergers tho. Took a while cuz i absolutely hated that part of myself when i first found out but now i wouldnt give it up if i could. It's the greatest friend ive ever had :)
im also fine with my autistic diagnoses, it's really just the social anxiety and my ADHD that I really cannot stand.
Sam Farrow cool thanks for telling me I write raps and hip pop music are your songs on RUclips mines aren't yet
This is true my son was diagnosed with high functioning autism and he struggles in all three of the categories that you portrayed in the video This was a very informative video
I got Asperger/ADD
Came hear since theripist as a kid focused on improving me not understanding what that ment
Hey that is cool.

This
👍🏼
Is it discalculus
Well, now I understand why I was put somewhere in between the two, but I'm still confused of where exactly I belong. In a way, ASD instead of the two being separated makes things easier for me.
I show signs of both, some things indicate aspergers and other things imply autism.
Although, my math teacher asked me once if I had Aspergers because I couldn't remember his methods and I was teaching him new methods.
Yeah!! Thank you so much for the comment! Please subscribe to my channel to see more videos from me :).
so true my Asperger son was in trigonometry at age 10 and microbiology at aged 10 as well. his i.q. was 203 and was what he referred to as a maths and sciences savant. he had a friend who was a high functioning asd kid and i say "friend" in the loosest form, they were always in each others company playing video games...which they were extremely and equally awesome at...but they basically talked "at" each other rather than "to" each other. outside of video games they basically sat separately among us and had typical autistic tics
Yeah I find wrapping presents really hard as well, I can never manage to keep track of what Im doing
Yeah it is like really difficult.
Don't wrap just go to the Dollar tree and buy a bag. Drop the stuff in and attach a name tag!!!!
Hi can you tell about your speech dalay ..and when you started talking my son is 3 1/2 speech dalay I'm so worried about him ..I'm trying to understand thank you
Omg!! Thank you for doing this video!!! My grandson was just diagnosed "high functioning autism", and the 3 points you hit on are him to the T!! He is 4,and blows all of us away with his math skills!! Lol great vid!! Thanks for sharing, and raising awarenesses!!!

I have asperges but I suck at math and excel in some aspects of English/ language arts when I was in school I had an above average vocabulary . I did excel in Science until lots of math was involved . I also excelled in history when I was in school.
That is so cool!!!
Thank you for clearing that up, I lean more towards Aspergers.
Yeah! No problem
That's cool. I never knew that. I have aspergers and my son has high functioning autism. I can totally see the difference now. Thanks for the info.
Hey no problem, I am happy to helping, 😬⚡️.

Diagnosed AS age 16. 31 now. If only I had half of the info on executive function and other traits. Meds for many years. Long story short, like other aspies, I found my way. Many MD's just don't get it.

My Mum had always told me that I had "High Functioning Autism". I still describe myself as an Aspie.
Aspie With Attitude Diagnose is only words and letters on a paper. Deep inside, you know who you truly are.
I have aspergers and was put in special education because im super delayed in math. I believe aspergers is now high functioning autism. Because my doctor called it aspergers but on my paperwork it is autism spectrum disorder. But i think that maybe these are more symptoms of male aspergers.
I find this video really confusing my son was recently diagnosed with high-functioning autism but the doctor said that it is what they used to call Asperger's but they don't call it that anymore
