      Hey, I wanted to thank you so much for making your videos! You have brought a lot of light for my understanding, including other sources, so that I can better understand my partner that has literally changed my life lol the more I learned the more my own life inside my own head seemed to clear up, despite being completely different than the males with high functioning autism haha the man I met has this and he is the most amazing man I met, despite draining myself trying to figure him out too much lol but I am learning by just asking him what he thinks and letting him know that he kinda needs to dumb it down for me and use basic words so I can understand XD also for me when he gets going, I have to ask that I need a painted pic verbally, which he tries but he also has the same issues haha but I've noticed that what he is talking about I can ask for him to point it physically if I don't understand what object he is describing :)

      My son is 4 yrs old..he was delayed in talking, but he could spell.. Even at 3 yrs old, he barley talked but read" Friday" on my shirt.. He lines his toys, he does flap his hands sometimes. He has times when he acts like he's 17yr old..like If I try to talk to him, he gives me a kiss and goes back to what he's doing.. I just wish he would tell me what he's thinking.. He has qualities of both but at the same time he doesn't.. He was in special education at 3yrs old, with in 2 months he was " student of the month" but his teacher thought he had autism because he could do more than most..they hid the ABC's from all the kids, which made me upset.. But she said it was because the kids wouldn't do anything else..

    With my Aspergers diagnosis I myself had no language delay in fact I was very articulate with a vast vocabulary and very analytical in my way of communicating with language but struggled with expressing emotion, understanding humor, or with what was appropriate to say to others and when it was my turn to speak. Oddly on the second point I struggled very much in mathematics but as I have mentioned before I was hyperlexic and obsessed over words and letters rather than numbers and truly surpassed all of my peers in reading literature, vocabulary, and comprehension. I was very much left behind in maths. I struggle with even basic math like making change or multiplication tables. For the last point I’ve never had my IQ tested but here in the US we have SATs and a lot of standardized testing in which I always scored very high. My maths were low but other scores made up for that. I just wanted to point out that maths don’t have to be your strong point as my therapist specializes in autism and says it’s common to have a very strong point (which could be math or not) and then a very opposite low point in a different academic area.

    My son has high functioning autism but was initially diagnosed at the age of 2 1/2 with severe autism. He is 5 years old now and is still having trouble communicating his thoughts and at times expresses himself through Echolalia. At the age of 3 he was adding, multiplying and subtracting. He can count in 8 different languages, likes astronomy, has “perfect pitch” (absolute pitch) and can play piano and recognizes chords/ notes in different instruments and now is interested in the periodic table (it’s a big subject so he’s just starting). I mention all this because he absolutely does not have Aspergers and he’s into science, math and music, this is not solely an Aspergers thing. They are all so different. The only relatable truth to this discription between the two in my son’s case is the language delay. He has always had perfect pronounciation but the ability to communicate and to speak are more complex than that. He still struggles despite him being intelligent. He has a real hard time transitioning, waiting and is self directed.

    Fascinating. As a self diagnosed ‘Aspie’, latish in life, I am certain that the three differences you mentioned are major ones which it is easily missed. Because we have a high IQ we go undiagnosed because we find workarounds and think we are unlucky. If we regularly got diagnosed earlier in life NTs would be more aware of our abilities and forgiving of some of the issues. As it is we are just discarded as employees time after time. I am struggling with my own business but I’m hoping that being more aware of the ‘disadvantages’ will help.

      I'm not diagnosed with anything, but I have almost Mensa level IQ and also completely sucked at school. The main reason for this is that I can only concentrate and memorize things I'm genuinely interested in. It's not that I don't understand other things, it's just that my focus automatically swifts towards things I happen to be interested in. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case for an Aspie too.

    There is a difference, and you nailed it. My son was initially diagnosed Aspie at 13, but was re-daignosed as HFA after further assessment, primarily because he only had a vocab of approx 5 words at age 2. Watching him grow up and the friends he collected, it was very easy to tell those with autism vs the Aspies. I would add there is a physicality to autism that differs from Aspergers - in my experience, Autistic people have a distinctive posture and manner in their speech that also sets them apart from Aspies.

      I was diagnosed at 2 with High Functioning Autism when I was young, when they differentiated both. Yet, i speek very fluently 2 languages, Have An Above Average IQ on the brink of Gifted, Am very good at Math, Science, Music, History and Geography, have made multiple friends in different environments, whether its school, sports teams, neighbours, or when I met the children of many of my parents friends, and have barely ever been bulied. Their is really no difference in between the 2 which is why they got rid of the term Aspergers. The way they differentiated back then was based on if the person at a very young age like 2 for example had developed communication to an adequate level. However, this was completely stupid because it does not mean you developp something slightly later in your childhood or life for that matter, that you are gonna worse at it than someone who has developed it earlier. There is no corrolation between the age you learn to walk for example and how good of an athlete you will be. This is why they got rid of the term Aspergers. Because, it did not proove anything, and because there is basically no difference in between that and high functioning autism. Certain people with high functioning autism communicate better than certain people who where diagnosed with Aspergers and vice versa, It really only depends on the individual.

    Aspergers is what they called ASD or HFA back in the day. Usually older people will use that term if they have been diagnosed with ASD prior to the change. Aspergers is now referred to as ASD or HFA.

    Wow, I have Asperger's, and this pretty much describes me exactly! I get obsessed with things as soon as I hear or read something about them that piques my interest e.g aircraft, fossils (I used to dig for fossils during playtime from age 5-12, basically the whole of primary school, and would find little fossil shells called "brachipods", it took me years to find out their name!) I have been obsessed with mathematics all my life. I taught myself undergraduate analytic number theory after I finished teaching myself the full A-level maths course during GCSE, I want to become a research mathematician. And I can play a piece of music on the piano nearly exactly as it is after having listening to it once (however my dyspraxia gets in the way of how fast I can play the song). However it would be a stretch to even call me average at every other aspect of life.

But I find a- level maths too easy (because I already taught it to myself during the first year of GCSE), so I teach myself Complex analysis because I have finished teaching myself the analytic number theory, undergraduate level and am moving to graduate level. but can not continue due to my lack of knowledge in analysis. I have SOO MUCH maths information to give right now and typing is becoming extremely frustrating because my mind is ahead of my hands!! I prefer analytic number theory to algebraic.

      Rektro probably cos there's so much overlap. I remember when the DSM5R was being develop.... various folks in the many scientific and medical fields, etc couldn't agree on WHICH traits are "Autism" vs Aspergers. A lot of people wanted to keep Aspergers as an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Others wanted Aspergers to have its own dx and codes, etc ( bc "autism" is "bad" & a horrible. crippling dx, etc. and/or some aspies are offended at being lumped together with Autistics). Pretty much everything I've read....it comes down to language development. That ONE trait makes the difference in a differential dx....Part of prob with DSM5R is people like me: I have most of the other traits of autism, that "mark" me as FULLY AUTISTIC...but, incredibly verbal at early age, LARGE vocab, etc. So, they decided to put it all on the Spectrum...If not for my verbal/language abilities I'd be dx'd HFA. Hope this helps. Peace.

    • @HamsteroidOver
      @HamsteroidOver 6 лет назад +8

      @Angel some people are both Aspie and gifted so yeah, you can get most of the common aspie traits but not some of the most recurrent ones. Take routines for exemple, I can stay in there for a loooong time but then I suddenly get the urge to do TON of new things as fast as possible, more like gifted aka multipotential people tend to do. I'm also dxed with ADHD and I tend to switch from hyppo to hyper in the same way depending on stimulation etc... The joy of being complex lol ;P

    • @Angel-rq3pi
      @Angel-rq3pi 6 лет назад +1

      Christian Malo yup. that was my point... it's just a continuum, like most everything in this world that results in, or "requires" a, dx....people be people, either way. But a lot of people I've encountered want it to be a black or white proposition...either you have autism (regardless of function level) or you have aspergers. Also, even with the increase in awareness...a lot of folks still fear a dx of "autistic" or HFA for their kids or themselves- it's still a negative word in a lot of circles...maybe one day it won't matter.

She read and spelled her name at 18 months and her drawing began at that age as well. She’s an artist with a degree in computer animation but her anxiety is holding her back. She’s only 22 and has her bachelors as of age 20 so I’m leaving her to grow into her career. She has severe anxiety and math learning disability but it was a shock when she was dx at 15 because I always thought all people who were on the spectrum were delayed in speech. Apparently that’s not always the case.

    I feel like you make it seem much more simple than it is, and this is one of the reasons why the umbrella term of ASD/ASC is now used and why "high/low functioning" are unhelpful. My son, who is diagnosed with ASD (along with other conditions) is both high and low functioning, as are many others. He had a speech delay and can now be selective mute or use characters to speak through but he is very capable of speech and has a very extensive vocabulary and understanding of language that probably exceeds average for his age. A combination of factors including executive function difficulties, motor difficulties and demand avoidance mean he is low functioning when it comes to many very simple self care tasks, yet he is highly intelligent. I have heard this described as a "spiky profile". I have also often become frustrated when people who are non-verbal are presumed to be "low-functioning" or have severe learning difficulties; Naoki Higashida is just one great example of how wrong this assumption is.

    I was formally diagnosed a year ago ASD 1, just before the quarantine began, thus have been attempting to sort it all out via only an online community.
    After the initial diagnosis euphoria wore down, I became more and more confused as to why I did not easily fit in with groups with the Aspergers designation.
    This is the first time I understand why.
    The Aspergers designation does not apply to me
    High functioning autism does.
    I think the challenge for our community is to allow ourselves to recognize and acknowledge these differences, while never seeing any category as somehow superior or inferior to any other.
    I understand myself so much better since watching this video.
    I cannot thank you enough.

    hi, dan! i'm so happy i have found your channel. six months ago we found out that our son(7yo) has autism (level 1), in the usa there is not Aspergers anymore, just levels of autism. up until now i was in denial and thought the doctor was wrong because my son does not present the classical signs of autism. we suspected ADD. he started speaking very early and big words, he is very social...but has some other things that we as parents didn't know how to go about and had him tested. he is exactly the way you have just said in this video, very verbal, very good in science, gifted in visual-spatial, very talented with music, he can listen to an audiobook and then quote passages from it, can understand geometry but fails in simple computations. it was hard for us to take the autism diagnostic. but now, your videos have brought light :) our son does have sensory issues, low processing speed mostly for everyday tasks, he's very emotional, obsessed with airplanes, helicopters, spaceships :))) and overall has some quirks that sometimes make him fun to be around and sometimes not. it is still difficult to deal with everything because he is so smart in some areas and so childish in other and i don't always know how to adjust. we homeschool and i just don't understand how he can be so advanced in some areas, like doing middle school science, but just struggling with other much simple tasks, like remembering to put shoes on when leaving the house. would be possible to make a video with advice for parents like how to deal with different situations, how to parent a high functioning autistic child, maybe even a video about gifted autistic people. thanks!

      It is typical to have very uneven abilities. To excel in some things but not others in a more uneven manner than neurotypicals. My son has autism 1, and his math skills have blown away me away since he was two years old. He mentions calculations casually in the middle of a sentence that we have to use a calculator for, since he was 4 or something. He learned to read on his own before school, we weren't ever aware. Very intelligent boy. But he can't tie his shoes. He has huge troubles explaining mathematical problems, writing it down explaining the calculations step by step. His memory is crazy. I can say "remember when we went to that place that had nice ice cream? And he'd say" yes, it was the fifth of April 2014. But it is all about logic and patterns. Language are patterns, numbers are patterns, they have rules. Give him an abstract problem, and he will be at loss. And this is pretty typical.
      Passing exams are stressful, lots of people around, scraping of chairs and a lot of thing that distract. Being disorganized, I think it is (from my experience) that if something is not important, then why on earth bother to do it, it does not make sense. Also, time is fluid, and executive functions are different. To know how to start and how to finish. To know where to begin. Schedules are a great help with this.
      Sorry this is getting way too long, I always write too much, haha

I have discalculia and central auditory processing disorder with Dyspraxia and sensory processing disorder. I worked very hard to get through school but had no idea that everybody else did not have to stay up all night to get things done. I dropped out the first semester of college. Me and my friend have Aspergers. It's amazing how we have the same condition, yet have different things that we excel at. I excel at writing and I'm obsessed with dinosaurs, video games, science, anime, TV shows and movies. My friend excels at music (the keyboard and the guitar) she can play songs by ear and picks it up extremely quickly, she also excels in art and languages, especially Japanese. She loves wolves, anime and a game called Dangarunpa

    As a parent and early child educator I can identify many of the traits described in your video with human development that is in evolution. What is needed is time to accept individuals as all being unique and with innate talents early on in their lives instead of holding them to the standards of the status quo. We are too quick to place labels or see faults in these individuals. In my experience many parents are frustrated and disappointed that their child has a defect that needs to be fixed rather than to nurture and support them to excel in whatever their child is passionate about. Our son is 23yrs old he has dyslexia and many of the traits you described for Aspies which as a parent I embrace as a huge gift. He started and runs his own successful businesses since he was 19 year old. In my experience I suggest that we all throw away the labels think out of the box and appreciate differences as a very positive influence in all our lives. Thanks Dan for being that positive inspirational person.

    • @davidvarley1812
      @davidvarley1812 3 года назад

      I can't agree with throwing away the labels. I lived the first 30 years of my life without the term autism and thought I was unique. By having the term athiesm, I'm able to explain to those I meet why I act the way I do.
      I also get to see videos like this, that help me understand myself.

    • @BUBCvision

      @@davidvarley1812 The labels I refer to are the limits that some people including parents stick on you and don't allow you to be fully be valued or included into society. Thanks so much for sharing this with me as I must always be open to the views of others as important as yourself.

    • @davidvarley1812
      @davidvarley1812 3 года назад +1

      @@BUBCvision I must admit I am concerned that labels such as athiesm are used by individuals and governments to determine a persons potential. My parents never accept the idea of autism and from a young age I understand I'd have to work round my problems.
      I attended a special education school and while I went onto full time employment and a independent life, many of classmates whose initial abilities were high than mine, went onto welfare.
      A significant number of my former classmates are either alcoholics or drug dependents and three of the girls, I went to school with have children in state care.
      Many of those I went to school with are known to the police, courts and prisons. Some suffer from mental illness and a few of them are now dead which given I'm middle aged, is a depressing fact.
      The way labels like autism have been used by them and for them, as had a negative impact on their lives and the community they live within.
      So I think you have a point.
      A label is useful if used to assist the person, like I used my diagnosis but shouldn't be used as an excuse to hold back the individual.

    I’ve been searching for a definition and symptoms of high functioning autism, vs. Aspergers but can’t find anything that truly defines it or gives examples that make an elevated distinction, so thank you for this. I was a straight A student, early development and was walking and talking well before the norm. I can say that I hate math, except geometry. I loved it. I excelled at artistic things and writing over math and science. I did enough to get an A in classes I didn’t like and didn’t look back. Lol. I took a test and was even more confused. My doctor said I had ADHD and was high functioning. But high functioning what? The test said that I had traits it says I have both neurodiverse and neurotypical traits. What does that really mean? I am more of a social introvert but I do enjoy being around people and talk to them. I just don’t like or need to be around them 24/7. It’s too draining. The more stress at work the less I want to engage and be around friends or family when I’m off. I like to recharge and sometimes veg out. I also suck at small talk and it doesn’t seem genuine so I do tend to avoid large social gatherings where I have to be around a lot of people I don’t know.

Through watching these videos leading up to me getting my diagnostics, I felt like I mostly related to the signs of Aspergers. But apperently there are some things that leans more to the austism side of the spectrum. Which one it is doesn't matter to me. They confirmed that there was something and my ADD was what they had the most focus on. Soon I'll be starting a treatment plan for ADD, hoping It'll help me in my eveyday life. And We'll have to work out a plan for some day to day support at work and at home. But there'd definitely have to be a plan for how my future work schedule will be laid out som it works out for me. so true my Asperger son was in trigonometry at age 10 and microbiology at aged 10 as well. his i.q. was 203 and was what he referred to as a maths and sciences savant. he had a friend who was a high functioning asd kid and i say "friend" in the loosest form, they were always in each others company playing video games...which they were extremely and equally awesome at...but they basically talked "at" each other rather than "to" each other. outside of video games they basically sat separately among us and had typical autistic tics

    Went on for nearly 3 min before he got to the topic of the video. That's nearly 50% of the video.

    I have Autism, I am high functioning in Math and Music, philosophy. I have a genius I.Q.. You're saying I don't Asperger's because I had a delay in speaking. It's my understanding that Asperger's is a type of High functioning autism. Also Asperger's isn't a diagnosis. At least that's what my therapist told me. Also the actual term is being canceled out everywhere, because Asperger worked for the Nazis. Those he approved were spared and those who weren't were killed. Though he did recognize autism as separate disorder from schizophrenia.

    I find this video really confusing my son was recently diagnosed with high-functioning autism but the doctor said that it is what they used to call Asperger's but they don't call it that anymore

    I was diagnosed with aspergers but had a delay in speech, excelled in maths/science and have a higher iq. So I think it's hard to tell the difference between the two.

    It's great to hear this.
    Diagnosed AS age 16. 31 now. If only I had half of the info on executive function and other traits. Meds for many years. Long story short, like other aspies, I found my way. Many MD's just don't get it.

    I think everything has so much overlap now because all the definitions are so different. My special education textbook literally says that in the medical community, HFA, AS and ASD are essentially synonymous with PDD NOS.
    Also for some reason I’ve heard of people becoming offended at the HFA label. I can’t really wrap my head around why, let me know if I’m wrong but for people on spectrum I think a sudden noise is a thousand times worse a trigger than a label that belongs in our community.

      Yeah totally, that’s why I favour the ASC description now.

    My son was diagnosed with Autism though he would have been diagnosed with Asperger's had he gotten his diagnosis just one year sooner. His doctor uses the more current diagnosis methods. He has a very high IQ and strong language skills. An Autism diagnosis has helped him get services and school accommodations he might not have gotten otherwise. Before his diagnosis, he didn't qualify for anything because his grades were top of his class. The diagnosis forced the school to consider his social and emotional needs. I think people think of Aspies as having it together more, though that may or may not be the case and depends on the individual. So they are less likely to accommodate for children with that diagnosis over one with Autism that gets more publicity. My doctor is of the opinion, "who cares what people call it as long as we get him help where and when he needs it." :)

    I was diagnosed with ASD / Asperger's syndrome. From their medical psychiatric services, she says that I have a math disability, and I wouldn't disagree, I've struggled with math for a long time and get frustrated that I can't do those things very well. With music, I like to listen to it, and play it if I can, but I don't think I can sing, and when I get sheet music, I need time to write out all the notes out so I can read it better. I've had a hard time trying to coordinate using both hands in piano classes, I can usually only use my right hand, or my right hand just takes over. I'm glad I'm not taking piano class anymore, it causes me too much frustration.
