Absolutely I did! Like you I imagined chaos with so many people living in Tokyo/Japan. Their order in all things has I think, been present always, just imagine if it were a free for all?!! I wonder with such long working hours, do they have leisure time and when?
I’m intrigued about education, crime and if they have similar issues with young people who don’t have jobs, are they ‘yobs’ are they even allowed to be? Do unemployed/disabled people receive benefit from state? With a growing older population how do their pensions last or do they have state help?
I’m going to have to Google guys! Your vlogs always fascinate, interest and certainly stimulate my mind and need to know more. I’m sure others following your channel must feel the same!!! Great content!!!
One thing I am always thinking when I listen to Julia, is, when you hear Matt (anyone) speaking in English, do you hear it in English, then in Russian before answering in English? 😳🤷♀️ Russian is such a different language and you speak English so amazingly well!!!!!!

One of my weirdest memories of Tokyo was when my daughter and I were trying to take the underground to see the Tokyo Tower. We were having difficulty with the ticket machine so we pressed the "Help" button and out popped a man from inside the machine who assisted us!! The Japanese are very helpful!! Lots of love from London, ON 🇨🇦

I 100% agree with your comments at the end. I had very high expectations for Japan when I went. It far exceeded my high expectations. It’s so orderly, well run, and clean. The people are so nice and helpful. They food is amazing. There is SO much to do and see…. We are going back in a couple months.

You’re so right about wanting or needing to go back. I was reluctant to go in 2016 but since then, I have been 5 times before the pandemic and am dying to go back. So much so I have learned Japanese! It’s an amazing place that needs to be experienced. And you are also right about the culture. People are just considerate and kind. I wish America was like this.

I wish everyone was kind to each other everywhere around the world. But to be completely honest with you…we’ve met some a*seholes along the way, but in every single country we’ve been to, vast majority of people were genuinely nice and kind!

As the largest city in the world, Tokyo is the cleanest, safest and, in a good way, the craziest. It's a place where cutting-edge technology and pop culture coexist with ancient traditions and, incredibly, lots of forests and nature. Plus, you can eat safe and delicious food for the lowest price in the world. People are friendly, polite, moral, and follow the rules of society. Not many people speak English, but don't worry. Everyone works very hard to meet my needs. One couple took me all the way to my destination even though they had no business there. I had lost my wallet in the crowds of Tokyo in the past, but a young man picked it up, ran after it, gave it to me breathlessly, bowed, and walked away without taking my thanks. I was very surprised. Oh, and the public toilets are clean not only in Tokyo, but also in the countryside. I can't believe it. Tokyo, or rather Japan itself, is a very rare place on earth. It's one of those places you should visit at least once in your life.
Tokyo metro is the most populated in the world, but it is not the largest metro in the world. Shanghai is the largest metropolitan in the world at 14922 sq km. Tokyo is the 2nd largest and most populated.

Don't worry guys - I have lived in Tokyo for two years and still get lost regularly. Local Japanese get lost too. Just a small correction for Matt's comments about Japan's work culture: things have been changing in recent years. The description of everyone staying till the boss leaves mostly still exists in very conservative small companies and a category of companies called 'black companies' in Japanese - most companies actually try to limit overtime now.
So easy to get lost 😅
Oh yeah, thank you so much for telling us! Our tour guide, Kozo, told us that apparently things are changing for the better, in regards to the working environment. Hopefully it will continue to do so ❤️

i visited tokyo in 2011 just before the earth quake . i visited to old tower and the new tower was just being constructed . it was built so quickly due to the size of the work force and the availability of many engineers . japan is so unique indeed . idid find travelling on the rail system difficult as the ticket machine was in Japanese yet the people were most helpful . thanks for posting

Agree with lots of points you make. So busy, yet almost silent, compared to English city centres. No shouting or bawling.
Mega polite, no in your face bravado that you may experience in the UK.

My family and I lived in Japan for 2 1/2 years, you would be very surprised at Christmas time, they celebrate Santa, the trees, decorations, music, gifts and I got vey tired hearing the 12 days of Christmas over and over.

I was born in Tokyo, and now I am farming in the mountains of Nagano. There are no vending machines, no restaurants, no bright neon signs, but there is free time here.

Need to get to Tsukiji (fish market) really early, before sunrise, to see the action & have a fresh breakfast. Saying that, the new Tsukiji pales in comparison to the original.

An excellent summary of Japan. I’ve lived in Tokyo for 25 years and enjoyed seeing it through your fresh eyes. BTW the original Tsukiji wet fish market is no longer in Tsukiji, it moved to a new location in Toyosu about 4 years ago. The little boxy cars you saw are called “kei-cars”, meaning lightweight cars. They have 650cc engines and the road tax on them is cheaper than regular cars, so they are very popular, particularly as light commercial vehicles. Ideal for Tokyo’s narrow backstreets.

Visited Tokyo with my then 15-yo daughter, an experience of a lifetime. We had a full schedule and did a lot in 8 days but really want to go back one day. Apart from the sights and experiences, the politeness and cleanliness was striking, no garbage, no smoking in the streets. We were looking for a restaurant one night, asked in a luxury store for directions, the girl working there walked with us for two blocks to ensure that we found it. Amazing!
You’re seeing crowds because you’ve been to the most cliche places in Tokyo. I’ve been living here for 15 years, in Shibuya and I barely see any people in my neighborhood. Glad you visited Japan, hope you followed local rules so as not to inconvenience others

This video just confirms what I thought about Japanese people having a huge amount of respect for each other: staying late to respect their boss, working hard to respect their economy, staying quiet on public transport to respect others' privacy, taking their rubbish home to respect the streets. There's a lot to be learnt here.
I had a residence in Japan for 17 years and I was actually at home for about 8 of those years because I was an international worker but, given that I don't really like big cities anywhere, I will tell you as a foreigner who actually lived in Japan long-term and who speaks the language fluently (before you ask) that Rural Areas like the Island of Kyushu are much nicer and the general quality of life is much higher in rural areas.

Good reviews and opinions, Matt and Julia. I am a Japanese living in Tokyo. In my opinion, Japan don’t have enough spaces as you mentioned because huge area of the country is mountains areas. That environment made people taking care about each others. There is a famous saying, “even if you are truly get well along with friends, you have to be always polite.” This is just a culture. But…quite different from other countries:)

Love the discipline and cleanliness of Japan. Everywhere you go, you see people cleaning after themselves. And also amazed at the timing of all transportation. Was imagining if something doesn't goes right everything goes haywire. Imagine the train going bonkers.
Plus point of Japan is the respect culture. We automatically feel respectful towards humankind. There is no other place in the world where you see people bow to other people out of respect + thankful.
We love Japan...we are here and will always return.

Tokyo is incredibly easy to get around. The yamanote loop or green line takes you to the main areas Shinjuku, harajuku, shibuya, shinagawa etc. grab a pasmo or suika rail pass and get going. Machines are at most if not all stations. We were amazed at how simple it is to get around.

The lack of trash cans in Japan is always talked about, but this is actually due to the Sarin gas attack on the subway in 1995. In order to prevent people from disposing of suspicious items, trash cans disappeared from the streets. Until then, trash cans were everywhere in Japan.
The actual market moved to Toyosu in 2018 from Tsukiji. Many restaurants and shops did not move from their locations in Tsukiji. If you want to see the wet market you have to go there. I saw it in 2001, but still just amazing what was available.
I'm so glad I found your channel. There is no one I'd rather "visit," Japan with than the two of you. And your research and report on the city of Tokyo and the country in general were fascinating. Tokyo nights are the best. Evening walks are recommended. It is safe for a woman to walk alone in the city. Even dark parks and shrines are safe for couples.
Foreigners who know Japan well go out for walks, mainly at night.✨

Loved Tokyo. I agree I was not expecting to have loved it. I did need a slow down during part of the time there and found Ueno Park which was wonderful. Shopping in the Ginza district was a shock to the senses as well. Looking forward to your next stop on this journey.

No matter how much the world changes, I feel that Japan will continue to be Japan in both good and bad ways. And the Japanese themselves seem to know this and accept it. If Japan does change, it will be a slow, intergenerational change. I'm not that pessimistic about Japan's population decline, although it may be an economic problem. The boost in population growth up to now has been more unusual. That generation begins to retire from life. This will lead to a gentle transition of values.
It will be interesting to watch what will happen for sure
I had a close friend visit Tokyo, and she said it was an urban experience unlike any other and she had been to most capital cities of the world. Also declining population rates are occurring in most first world nations and birth rates and fertility are taking a nosedive. I really enjoyed your thoughts on Toyko and Japan as a whole. Great video. Not a fan of crowds myself, so being in Tokyo soon will be a experience. My home city is only about five million and I live out in the suburbs. The Japanese have in some small ways begun to address the declining population. Won`t be easy for them but they are now allowing more foreigners to own property and live in Japan. There have been other initiatives as well like encouraging city folk to go rural. Nothing like fresh air and green space to get folks in the family mood.

ひとつは防犯です。
暗い夜道には灯りになり、道に迷えば詳しい住所が記載されています。
また、監視カメラが付いた機械もあります。
もうひとつは防災です。
ご存知のように日本は世界に類をみない大規模な自然災害の多い国です。
万が一最大級の地震が起きた時には、屋外避難した人たちのために、飲料を無料で供給されるように作られています。
いくつかの自販機にはAEDが備え付けられている機械もあります。
自然災害大国の日本では、自販機やコンビニエンスストア、ガソリンスタンドは非常時のための社会インフラでもあるのです。

Your wrong, there are ninjas who sit inside the vending machine, at night they rob and kidnap people, and drag them inside the vending machine and work for free to dispense beverages and candy.
