  • This video demonstrates one of the many possible ways to modify your sampler and make it sound a bit more... harsh ;)
This project is a really deep rabbit hole but since I've lost a lots of footage I decided to post only one of the simplest methods. Once you grasp the principles of this modification, it will be an easy job for you to modify it your way - control it with a pot or encoder, use Ableton style "dummy" samples to change the frequencies etc...

Really nice and clear explanation of the cutoff stepping, range and how to apply a mod. Looking forward to your follow up vids.

please (you, or some one) make a batch of these and make it an easy install product to buy! trust me, it will sell like hot cakes! especially with owners of the s900/s950 already who are into boombap and lofi beats and stuff. Sounds very much like an sp12/1200/emax with that filter opened up!

Especially knowing that “Lofi Girl” gets 11 million views on RUclips.
      Lofi. People love it!

problem with this mod is that it relies on physical tampering with tracks on PCB to decouple internal clock from our custom one. In order to make installation of it more "user friendly", I would have to tap into data lines (there is connector with them on the pcb), capture and modify the clock data in realtime, not saying it's impossible but it would take some time to do a proper research. Anyway - never say never - maybe at some point I'll get into that :)

Hi Dawid, do you know what it could be in the input circuit that adds up an high pitched noise to every sound I sample? It is very annoying and ruins the samples :(

Hej Dawid, czy wykonujesz takie mody odpłatnie? Mam s950 i bardzo przydałaby mi się ta modyfikacja. :)

Amazing work man! Have you also tried clocking the filter lower than 15.7kHz to close it even further than originally possible and if yes, does the clock signal "leak" into the audio signal? Just asking because on my S900 there's a strong 16kHz component in the signal when I close the filter completely and I'm wondering if that's a fault in my unit or if it's normal and maybe even the reason akai doesn't let you close the filter even further. At first I was leaning torwards my S900 being faulty but after seeing that on the album version of fatboy slim's right here right now theres the same peak at 20kHz at the beginning I'm starting to think that that's normal S900/S950 behaviour. cheers

Impressive work Dawid! Would you mind sharing the arduino code with us DIY people?! Have an old board around and would like to try it with an potentiometer. Thanks so much!!!

not really, as in current form, this mod is not polished enough to make me confident selling it to people :/ I had plans to make it "better, stronger, faster" but since it's an old "side project" - there is always something (work, family, other projects etc...) in the way of getting it done. I still have it in the back of my head, so at some point I'll get it done or... get someone to do it lol :)

btw. I can control it with midi now so it is possible to hook it up to any DAW and control it from there :)

The genius of this is amazing, I LOVE how you snuck it into the gotek case. Would this also work on s900? I think the boards are the same? I would love to try this, I dont suppose you would mind sharing your arduino code? many thanks!

Yes it should work. The S900 uses the same method to generate filter clocks.
