The orange color that's present throughout much of Dutch culture is a nod to the royal family, which is made up of members of the House of Orange. The dynasty dates back to 1544 when William of Orange inherited the estate and title at the age of 11.
Another fun fact, Holland was the first country to use the tricolour and the red-white-blue. France, USA and Russia modeled their flag to the Dutch flag
Fun fact: A scottish fan forgot his handy on a bathroom and thought he would never ever see it again. German fans found it, made a selfie from theirselfs and brought it to the police. The police found the owner, gave him the handy back and now the owner is searching via instagram for the fans with the picture on his handy!
Dutchy here. Orange is our national color because of the last name of our royal family: Van Oranje, or translated to English: Of Orange. We're one of the last remaining monarchies. Back in the day (centuries ago) our flag used to be orange, white and blue. But due to bad visibility of the color orange for ships at sea, they changed it to red. Since then it has been tradition on some occasions to fly the red white and blue Dutch flag accompanied by an orange banner to honor the royal family. It's also been adapted in our national team's sports kits and we made carrots orange just for the fun of it 😉
@@carmenl163 Hahhaahahhaaaaaa, this is probably taken for the whole truth and nothing but the truth- ----The explanation of Van Oranje by TheTwan85 is correct though... don´t confuse people!
Now now. There are 43 countries with a monarch as head of state. But great job on those carrots (SO much more distinctive than boring white) and bringing a great mood to the EM!
@@oxter11Fourteen of those countries have their king 'adopted' /living abroad (Commonwealth), which is very different from the close connection we have with our Dutch Royals. Also, we don't recognize the Pope as royalty and African monarchs, apart from the King of Morocco. So there are very few countries that are in our position.
Fun fact, last name is actually von Amsberg, the real "orange" bloodline has been cut long time ago. But since almost everyone still thinks it's from the Orange familiy line, lots of us dress up in Orange 😅
Nah, Germany and the Scots don't share any history of "loving" each other during tournaments. Scots, like the Dutch, are everybodies friends. They make you feel comfortable if you want to party with them. They don't care if you're from China or Germany. The more the merrier. Be warned though, at the end of the day you're wearing either a kilt or an orange wig. 😉The only fandoms that really love each other and mix well together, have a click, party hard when they meet up are the Dutch and the Celts like Irish, welsh and the Scots. Germans don't mix with anyone to be honest. They try though. They're very hospitable, respect other fans/teams/countries, but it feels like there is always a certain distance. They act like they think they have to act, copy certain behaviour, not from the heart like the Dutch, Irish, Scots or Welsh. The English is a another matter. (Google said it better than I could) The orange color that’s present throughout much of Dutch culture is a nod to the royal family, which is made up of members of the House of Orange. The dynasty dates back to 1544 when William of Orange inherited the estate and title at the age of 11. In the years after WIlliam of Orange ascended the throne and the Netherlands gained independence from Spanish rule, the national flag was originally blue, white and orange. However, over the course of the last nearly five centuries, the country traded out the orange for red. The reason is not entirely known. Some subscribe to the lore that red was simply easier to spot on the open water -- an important fact for a sea-faring country. Others believe the change was part of a 1654 treaty with the English agreeing to adopt the colors of a Bavarian Coat of Arms. Still others suggest that the orange dye used for the flags turned red over time until the Netherlands just made the change official. Despite the lack of orange in the country’s flag, the color is ubiquitous throughout many Dutch sporting events and celebrations of the royal family. (I add myself: Willem van Oranje, William of Orange, was the leader of the Dutch revolt against Spanish rule in our country. It became known as the 80 years war. He was from the house of Nassau (in Germany) and became prince of Orange (in southern France.) Carrots, yes we all know them, those orange vegetables.. were made orange in honor of our king hundreds of years ago. Exported all over the world it became known as the color that carrots naturally are.)
All correct except that William of Orange was never King. He'd been appointed stadhouder (i.e., steward, or representative of a largely absent monarch) by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V but became the leader of the rebellion that led to the formation of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands (1579-1795) under Charles's son Philip II of Spain. Successive members of the House of Orange then served as commander in chief and highest executive official of the Republic ever since, until the establishment of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, when they were elevated to kingship, in 1815. And that is why orange has been our national colour since the 16th century ;-).
@@automation7295 You wrote that comment a few times. Serious non-sarcastic question from someone who lives in Germany: Who would fight each other? I don't fully understand.
@@bjornidler990 Football/NFL fans in the US are more fight each other for supporting another team, but in most of Europe, people usually don't start fighting each other.
@@automation7295 Really? I thought NFL football was more about entertainment than fan rivalry. In Germany there is much more fan rivalry in club soccer, especially when it comes to a so-called derby, a game between 2 clubs from the same area. There have been quite a few hairy moments that I witnessed. The national team is much more of a family thing in my experience.

If us Dutch make it out of the group phase, it's going to be epic. And if the Scots and Dutch teams manage to meet, it's going to be even better. I heard the Scots managed to make some beergartens in Muncih run our of beer, which is quite a feat, but us Dutchies love a challenge. But overall this Europameisterschaft is everything good about football, and just shows what a terrible idea Qatar was.
Beautiful scene I got to see in Munich on that day, at central station a group of German fans and Scottish fans mingling together and the Germans offering beer to the others. It should always be like that among fans!
I live in Munich, the whole atmosphere is amazing, regardless of your home country its been no issues, just lots of good fun. I was at a beergarten with over 5000 people, Scots and Germans, lots of music, singing, and a large screen.
As an old dude from Germany this is what I imagined when I read the Harry Potter books when I was a kid. All fans from all nations coming together to show their colors and throw a big party ❤

This! The video with the two guy holding the umbrella was my favorite. Somehow the Scots (or most of them) can get drunk without aggression or stupidity.
Its not remotely comparable to NFL or any other sport where merely Clubs are involved. This is the european Championships. National Teams are facing each other and Fans are there to represent their Country and their culture which differs greatly over the little bit of Land we call Europe. Saw those Scottish folks, they are a stark contrast to let’s say Italian or Turkish Fans. You don’t get that within your own country though
As a Swede, I miss to not be in the games 😭 I would love to party with all the fans coming from all over. We are all peaceful and respectful, and we love football.
European Cup is almost as big as the World Cup. It is kinda the World Cup minus Brazil and Argentina. And the good thing is, they can't host the Euros in places like Qatar, so usually it it close enough for the Orange army and others to come out in full force.
There are 200K Scots here for the Euros. They're amazing and a credit to their country. They literally invaded Munich, and the Bavarians just lapped it up. They best fans in the world.
The Scottish fans are all funny, friendly, not violent at all, they love our German beer (they enjoy it in gallons) and were devastated after we beat them 5 to de-facto 0 (The Scottish goal was an own goal mistake by Rüdiger!). We gave a couple of free beers to the saddest Scottish fans we found that night in order to cheer them up a bit. There are clips on YT from boys around 20 that are so enthusiastic; they state that their trip to Germany is their first trip to a foreign country ever and they saved up money for it like 4 to 5 years in advance with typical part time jobs teenagers do like washing cars or delivering newspapers and milk bottles. That's what I call true spirit! -- The Dutch fans here in Hamburg were just great! People from the Netherlands always have a good sense of humor, German as a language is mandatory in their schools, so they all speak German, and they had a good time in Hamburg beating Poland 2:0, so the trip over from Holland was worth it. The Royal house of Oranje-Nassau comes from the German dutchy of Nassau. Because the Royal family name is Oranje (orange) that is the national color of the Netherlands. -- To sum it up, we love the Scottish and the Dutch fans. See my short here: ruclips.net/user/shortsbOeXxxSOqSk?si=OjZuwvVIMCxX1KSi
The founding father of the Netherlands was William of Orange Nassau. He inherited the principality of Orange in 1544. So he went from Duke of Nassau to Prince of Orange-Nassau. Orange is a town in France that was nominally sovereign until the end of the 18th century (something like Monaco). The current royal family is still from the same house Orange Nassau (but they have no political power anymore). So, the national color of the Netherlands is orange.
NFL isn't comparable to the Euros not only because the Euros have much better fans, but because the Euros is countries playing, not just regular clubs. Also those figurines the dutch were carrying are some legendary dutch footballers.
The orange is from William Prince of Orange, and the old Dutch flag used to have orange instead of red on top called the prince flag. (so orange, white, blue). I think the orange one is from 1550, or a little later and the red one from after 1600 because orange would fade faster when used on ships on the sea often
Today the Dutch team is playing against the French team here in Leipzig. I just got home from work, the game is in like hours and the whole city is orange! So crazy! And I absolutely love it. When I see them party this much, I might need to go to the city in the evening again xD
5:40 , for some conext: its a very popular party song, and the lycrics are 'VAN LINKS (beats) NAAR RECHTS" on repeat, which means "FROM THE LEFT (beats) TO THE RIGHT" and whenever it plays, you immediately become best buddies with the people who are standing next to you, even if you dont know them, because it is mandatory to grab them over the shoulders and MOVE the lycrics at the end of the song are 'want niets is zo fijn, als een hollandier te zijn!' which means 'cause nothing is as (great/)fun, as being a dutch!'
You can watch most of the games in the US on Fox or Fox Sports, kick off times are 3pm CEST/9am ET, 6pm CEST/12pm ET and 9pm CEST/3pm ET. Fox has some great commentators like Derek Rae, a Scot who's been living in Germany for a long time and speaks German fluently, so he will know a lot about the host country and its league.
The orange is from the House of Orange our royal family. The reason your carrots are orange as well actually. And the statue heads were from the GOATS of Dutch Soccer. Ofcourse Johan Cruijf , Frankie Reikaard etc.
Fun Fact: carrots came from Afghanistan to The Netherlands in the 17th century and had many colors but not orange! They crossbread it into orange as a gift for the King, Willem Van Oranje! Why orange? In the 16th century the prince enherited some land in the French county of Orange wich he added to his name
The Orange fans gather at one point in the city, coordinated with the local authorities, and march together to the stadium. The double decker bus, with music and singers, in front, followed by the dancing crowd. It's such a big happening, nobody wants to miss it. A statement, but also prevents small groups swerving through town and messing with the opponent fan clubs. Orange is the color AND nickname for all national teams, football, field hockey, ice speed skating, Olympic team... If a sports(wo)man plays:in Orange, it means they play in the National Selection and represents the Netherlands.
if you see scotish and dutch fans join in they are there to party. English, serbian, turkish and georgian 'fans' were fighting, inside and outside the stadium
Over the next month it will be crazy in Europe. Lots of games between different countries, and all the fans on the street encouraging their country. In the case of Portugal, the reception of the Portuguese team was carried out with thousands of motorbikes from the airport to the Hotel, they were Portuguese who went to Germany There is a large Portuguese community residing in Germany, and many were Portuguese emigrants to Germany. This support for motorcycles began in 2004, when Portugal organized the Euro. Thousands of motorbikes followed the national team to the stadiums on game day, guarded the players, etc. The tradition remains.
Hallo, Dutchy here, I was in Munich, my daughter lives there. She has a Turkish boyfriend. Both teams were playing the same evening for the 8th finals, first the Dutch against Romania, then the Turks against Austria. We were a mixed Dutch/Turkish support team for both teams. That evening, we were watching, supporting Turkey in a see of Austrians and there was no problem at all. Next morning in the hotel, some Dutch told mee that they went home in the subway with their orange gear in between all Romanians and there was only good vibe there too. It was incredibly nice to experience all those different people who support passionately their own team while showing respect to the other team and the organizing country, Germany.

Dude, it's an international tournament. You can't compare it to the NFL (maybe college gridiron?). All the games are played in one country (Germany in this case) and the fans travel to stay for the whole tournament or until their team is eliminated. The fact is that this is a tournament between countries and there are no fights between fans, with the exception of English fans obv and those from countries that have recently experienced war or rift (like the Balkans). The atmosphere is generally friendly and everyone is on holiday to enjoy football.
Those Tournaments have to be held in countries with a feeling for the sport... in my opinion every EURO should be in Germany. Central Europe so everybody can reach it, solid food and hotels and great stadiums.... one the downside: The Deutsche Bahn and Gelsenkirchen as a city.
Hamburg local here. The fan walk of the dutchs before their first match here were about 40k people. Alltogether it is a big friendly party, with the occasional banter. Only serious confrontation so far was between serbien and albanian fans (who didnt even play each other)
Greets from Germany. The best is, all fans are making party together. We Germans have the Scots and Netherlands kept in our ❤❤ It is a big party, no hate, no physical violance. Sure we hope that Germany would be win the Euro24 and stand to our Team. But the Party is incredible and the fans of each country are mostly sympathic
Fun fact: the orange in the Irish flag is a nod to Dutch-Irish history. The orange symbolises the protestants of Ireland, who feel represented by orange because of, the Dutch noble, William of Orange's intervention in Ireland, defeating irish separatists.
Firstly, the orange happens to be the colour of the royal Dutch household. William of orange, who was a protestant fought Catholic King James of England, in ireland, was defeated by William and since the colour orange has been adopted by the protestant loyalist of Northern Ireland. The Irish flag of the Republic of Ireland 🇮🇪 is an attempt or olive branch in which the nationalist flag of green is placed with the orange flag of unionist with the white flag of peace/ neutrality in-between.
There is 200k Scotland fans in Germany right now for the opening games. It's the largest support at the Euros by a considerable distance. They legit drank Munich dry in 2 days. My father is there right now. I couldn't get the time off work unfortunately.
there's also a funny one with austrian fans singing "immer wieder österreich" and a german policeman asking them like "that's all you can do?" and starts singing the same song again over the PA, encouraging them to sing even louder 😀
5:16 orange is our national colour, the reason behind this is because our royal family has the last name Oranje-Nassau (Oranje meaning orange in dutch).
This is a strategy used in every city this Euro. They want to ensure that police is able to understand the fans' language and also to de-escalate if needed.

There's so much to explain here ^^ The first point is that Germany and Scotland have no real rivalry as far as fans in "football" are concerned, and are therefore very friendly with each other, and also we both have a certain dislike of the English (in the football sense). Which brings us to the English. They are still mentally stuck somewhere in 1940 and think that football is just another battlefield of the Second World War and that we Germans are therefore their natural enemy. However, that only applies to them but not to us Germans. We have 4 World Cup titles, but the English only have one... which they won over 60 years ago. And apart from the one World Cup title, they've never actually won anything else at international level in football. Our "final boss", on the other hand, is the Netherlands. Although the rivalry here is more of a tongue-in-cheek affair. But there were some really "hateful moments" over 30 years ago when Frank Rijkaard spat at the German player Rudi Völler and Völler got a yellow card for it.

The Euros started with Germany v Scotland on June 14th ... the final, starring Scotland again, will be on Sunday July 14th The format of the tournament is the same as the "old" World Cup A group stage, where each team plays against 3 other teams Then the knockout rounds - where 16 qualifying teams are eventually reduced to 2, the final Other than the World Cup, this is the most important football tournament in the world ... A football fan organises their diary on a 2-year cycle ... Euros .. World Cup ... Euros ... World Cup So far, this tournament has been brilliant - not a single 0-0
The Bars close to the Stadium for the opening game of the Euros filled mostly with Scot's were selling over 1Million pints of beer an hour. Fair to say Germany will be welcoming Scotland back at the earliest possible opportunity.
the stadium in munich is in the middle of a under developed area, there were zero bars close to the stadium that i could see. Everywhere in town was absolutely rammed full and most fans had their own box of beer.
The orange comes from the royal families name which is van Oranje-Nassau, furthermore in the 1600-s you had two factions in holland one part that wanted holland to become a republic and the other part that wanted it to be a kingdom the people who wanted a kingdom used orange banners to show their allegiance.

It's also been adapted in our national team's sports kits and we made carrots orange just for the fun of it 😉
Yeah, we also named a fruit after our national color 🍊😊
Honestly, I don't think I have ever seen two fandoms that love each other as much as Germany and Scotland. I for one love Scotish fans.
They grind everyone's gears...grrrrrrr.😂😉😂

The orange color that’s present throughout much of Dutch culture is a nod to the royal family, which is made up of members of the House of Orange.
Collour is changed to red because its better to see at sea, netherlands where big at sea at that time
@@Fr-ron That's what it says..?

Yep, Marco v. Basten and Ruud Gullit, both part of the Dutch team of 1988 when the Netherlands won the Euro cup!
The orange is from William Prince of Orange, and the old Dutch flag used to have orange instead of red on top called the prince flag. (so orange, white, blue). I think the orange one is from 1550, or a little later and the red one from after 1600 because orange would fade faster when used on ships on the sea often

The Orange fans gather at one point in the city, coordinated with the local authorities, and march together to the stadium. The double decker bus, with music and singers, in front, followed by the dancing crowd.

The orange symbolises the protestants of Ireland, who feel represented by orange because of, the Dutch noble, William of Orange's intervention in Ireland, defeating irish separatists.

William of orange, who was a protestant fought Catholic King James of England, in ireland, was defeated by William and since the colour orange has been adopted by the protestant loyalist of Northern Ireland. Great spectacle from both set of fans...brilliant! Well done man on given us a wonderful show, Greetings from Ukraine!
There's so much to explain here ^^
The first point is that Germany and Scotland have no real rivalry as far as fans in "football" are concerned, and are therefore very friendly with each other, and also we both have a certain dislike of the English (in the football sense).
I still remember Ronald Koeman wiping his ass with a German shirt....
And I suspect one of the statues that the dutch fans carried around depicted Frank Rijkaard; another showed Ruud Gullit ...
Later they both cashed in on the event by doing a commercial together.
The English are great football fans. Some Germans just don't get their humour 😂

It isn’t a home tournament for the Dutch, but it can’t be any closer, especially a city like Hamburg.
The Euros started with Germany v Scotland on June 14th ... the final, starring Scotland again, will be on Sunday July 14th
The format of the tournament is the same as the "old" World Cup
A group stage, where each team plays against 3 other teams
Then the knockout rounds - where 16 qualifying teams are eventually reduced to 2, the final
Other than the World Cup, this is the most important football tournament in the world ...
A football fan organises their diary on a 2-year cycle ... Euros .. World Cup ... Euros ... World Cup
So far, this tournament has been brilliant - not a single 0-0
Him, you missed the Euro & World Cup played by the women ... therefore EVERY year is an important game year ⚽️
The Bars close to the Stadium for the opening game of the Euros filled mostly with Scot's were selling over 1Million pints of beer an hour.
This year's Euro seems very interesting with a bunch of promising underdogs giving the regulars some trouble.
On the first game of Albania vs Italy, the fans were 50k against 10k, and all of them were dancing together and having a great time in the stadium.
