Hey Darrell! What is the name of the riff that you use for the comparison number 4? I really like it!
Thanks!
Just a riff I whipped up for the video :)
Darrell Braun Guitar Great comparison of the Fenderverse, Darrell! I’m more of a Les Paul guy, so I liked the Tele’s darker sound, but they all sounded great in your capable hands
The 3 sounded great for me, to be honest. But I liked the strat the most in general. I always had the idea of the Tele bridge being the most distinctive tone of these Fender models but in this particular video the Start sounded great too in the Bridge, so all in all I´d choose the Strat.
Hi Darrell,
All three sound awesome! I took a fancy to the Tele!
I was honestly unprepared for how much I would like the Jazzmaster in all of these clips.
Same here. I thought I'd like the Tele best, but the Jazzmaster was my favorite.
Agreed, I've been a strat guy for 17 years but the jazzmaster would be killer in a mix.
That's what everyone says. The first time I played a Jazzmaster, I fell in love with the sound and I had to get one for myself.
A jazzmaster without a rhythm circuit... of course he is complaining about a lack of bass in the jazzmaster it doesn't have the bass circuit on his.
@@theroguetomato5362 Same HAHAHAHAHAH
Tele for me
But what do i know, never tried one

I have a tele and I LOVE it
The Jazzmaster killed it
Leon Soares Jazzmaster are amazing
Yes hahaha 😎😎😄
It did. And its not even a proper jazzmaster. Does not have the «real» JM bridge and no rythm circuit.
My ears maybe...
Jk 😋
Its just incredible to me that the first Gibsons and Fenders have never gone out of style 70 years later, and guitarists don't want them to change one bit. Truly timeless designs.
Some of it is how right they got it in the first place, some of it is just the image and prestige they earned by having [[INSERT YOUR FAVORITE MUSICIAN GROWING UP HERE]] playing them, but probably the most of it is that sound engineers have had 70 years to figure out how to mix them. Famously a lot of recording studios own a precision bass that sits on the wall for when a bassist with some fancy expensive bass just can't sit in the mix properly
@@traviswrigg5158 *Most* of it is that they got it right in the first place. It doesn't take 70 years of mixing lineage to figure out how to mix a P-Bass. It just sounds good in a mix -- it does the work for you. That's why it became a hit then, and that's why it's still a hit today. It's also just the nature of survivorship. The models that didn't sound great didn't sell and got discontinued or have been changed to sound better. It's like any antique. You look at antiques and you think, wow back in the day they really made stuff to last. But that's because all the poorly made junk from the olden days is in a landfill. It's the good stuff that survives.
@@Thoracius oh for sure. That's the main thing. They're well executed instruments. I just meant the thing about 70 years of reinforcement as another thing to think about in terms of "its not just musicians who find these instruments evergreen"
That's what I call a guitar comparaison, same riff with the 3 guitars .Yeahhh
All 3 have their strengths, but I was surprised how much I loved the tone of the jazz master! Before this video I wouldn't have even considered buying one.. now though.. on my list!
Oh really?
Jazzmaster are pretty famous for thier sound.
Especially magic during live venue if you happen to see a band playing with one. Not too much distortion, set to some warm crunch. For me it's almost an unbeatable tone!
How ever try a few, as fender did a lot of changes in thier specs lately...
Last one i tried in a shop had a big chunky neck that i didn't like...
Maybe Japanese ones would feel better and vintage spec
Agree - I got one recently and love the unique tones vs the other 2.
@@nazmoking3171 hello, what model did you get? 😁
Amazing guitars!
Why did I prefer the Jazzmaster almost every single time?
David RF great pickups in the jazzmaster.Never heard a tele sounding that bad by the way...i would change the pick ups for sure,
Because it’s the best.
The tone is just better
Because its a jazzmaster
Because when you play it you are a master of jazz
The strat has a real unique sound, the Tele has a bright, all-round balanced sound. But my gosh, that Jazzmaster sounds so dynamic and articulate. I own a Strat and Tele but hate to admit, I liked the Jazzmaster the most.
my personal taste :
1. Tele
2. Jazz
3. Strat
I love the Telecaster sound. But but I also love strat so my list puts Jazzmaster at the bottom because I also wasn't a big fan of the tone the Jazzmaster had
I’m the exact same
Why you gave Strate 3rd position and Jazz 2nd?
Very bold of you to put strat at #3
@@xltsalad8100 because i like strat least. its like my taste is different
Geeez Darrell, I wasn't going to get any more guitars. That Jazzmaster sounds so good!
Riverdeepnwide They’re phenomenal guitars. The vibrato is just so smooth and you have a huge range of sounds immediately available between the two circuits!
You won't be sorry. I love mine vs the tone of the other 2.
Soooo... did you get it?
I absolutely love how bright the jazzmaster sounds, I have never really been very fond of those guitars
Agreed!
Yes, it's a shame it's the licenced version. That being said, it really plays and holds tune well :)
i felt like the jazzmaster was too bright for my taste
An excellent comparison of three of Fender's best guitars. I think the Strat has the features I most desire. Darrell always has beautiful videos and this is one of the best.
Same here I’m a Strat person too the thinner single coil sound with its variability is hypnotically healing to me for some reason. ❤️🎸❤️🎧📲
I PLAY A 30 YEAR BLACK STRAT THAT GRANDAD GAVE ME AND IT PLAYS AMAZINGLY AND THE JAZZ MASTER SOUNDS MOST LIKE IT
ITS SOUNDS LIKE HEAVEN
@@jamesappleton7425 WHY ARE YOU TALKING IN CAPS LOCKS
@@tristan3456 He's excited and can't keep his voice down! Jazzmasters can do that to you!!!
I'm more of a tele guy but the strat was the standout for me in that clip.
I’ll always be a diehard strat fan, but I’m blown away by just how good that Jazzmaster sounded.
Now all you need is a jaguar and a mustang😀
I'd love to see a comparison between a Jazzmaster, a Mustang, and a Jaguar!
This! Personally, I love my Jaguar HH. Try one!
Are you referring to guitars ...or cars? ;)
And a starcaster and a jagstang
Agreed a Fender showdown with all these guitars plus a Jag in Mustang would be awesome.
For me, I find myself drawn to Teles. I do have a strat, and I love it. And don’t have a Jazzmaster yet. Maybe someday.
same, I'm drawn more to the Telecaster, although I like all 3 very much
Another GREAT VIDEO!
LOVED the Tele, then strat, and jazz master.
The Telecaster is an amazing instrument and, as you pointed out, a good bridge pickup on a good Tele is really hard to beat. But, I like your style best - you have all three!!
I think that this is the best review video I've ever seen/heard. Thank you.
I'll go for a Telemaster -- Tele sound with a Jazzmaster body.
.
Best of both worlds! Get one with a JM neck pickup and Tele bridge in a JM body. Nothing more comfortable to play, especially sitting down.
You put this video together masterfully. I love how you left no space between the riffs from all three models for each pickup/tone. Great idea.
An absolutely brilliant comparison. It does show how subtle the differences are.
Darrell, It's great to see and hear these back to back comparisons, a luxury few of us would get to experience otherwise. It seems the difference in single-coil layout, on each guitar platform definitely contributes to their unique tonality, not one necessarily better than the other, but each dominating their own territory. That slide on the Tele... now that's some serious grit!
Hi Darrell. I have watched a hundred comparisons and your two comparisons( this one and strat vs rg) are really great. Im from india and we dont have access to your gear or products. Your summary is the BEST EVER .Am I glad I stumbled upon your channel. Thank you my friend.
I really liked your final comments at the end of your video. As I’m listening through my iPhone I’m sure that much of the nuance gets lost on me due to poor listening apparatus.
It was great to hear what the person doing the playing actually “felt” from each instrument!
Great playing styles by the way !
Glad that I found your channel !!
Thanks Harry!
I preferred the Jazzmaster in this comparison, but it’s really hard to beat a Tele in the mix!
A year late best comparison I ever seen. Thank you.
Im a strat guy. But I love the tones coming out of that Jazzmaster.
I'm a sucker for a Tele, even if the Strat has an extra pickup and whammy bar. I'll just have to have all three of these great instruments and pull out the Jazzmaster for the likes of Pipeline, Wipeout, Bomborra and the like - even if these weren't played on the original record with a Jazzmaster, I think this guitar has the vibe for that music, but not only that music. Very good video.
i could not agree more with you. the tele bridge is so good that gives me chills
Nice side by side...by side! The Jazzmaster surprised me by coming alive with the higher gain. Thanks for another great video, Darrell!
I’ve had a Strat for 12 years and I’m very bonded to it. That said, in recent years playing in bands, I found that it doesn’t get a darker tone that well. My boyfriend convinced me to get a vintera Jazzmaster and I’m so glad I did! I’ll always have my Strat and will continue to play it, but the Jazzmaster has more options and I’m grateful to have more options with it. Great video!
This is the first time I’ve seen a comparison where similar things were played on each guitar to actually demonstrate the sound differences. Fantastic
Love your playing style - so smooth and confident !!
I just want to say thank you Darrell for the effort you put into making these videos. I’ve always wanted to have my own electric guitar ever since i was a young girl but my parents were only able to afford a classical guitar, and finally after about 10 years i was able to get one! I bought a Fender modern player telecaster about a month ago and absolutely fell in love with it! I realized my love for teles after i saw your video comparing a fender tele strat and the gibson les paul! These videos are absolutely amazing! And i’m sure you have inspired many others just like you inspired me😁
The fender modern player telecaster is such a steal at its price.
michael350p It is! Perfect if you’re on a budget
Feel very happy for you, if you tend toward a Tele is maybe you like the expressiveness of the fenders, such a beautiful mellow and wild instrument you have. I hope you enjoy it and become one, guitar and person. I'm in such trip as well, finding my own musician voice with my instrument. Cheers bye.
dudeya Thank you, i hope you find what you’re looking for! Good luck on your journey😊
Yes!
That tele sounded super good
Tele sounded unclear
Been a strat man my whole life. Just bought my first Tele and think I’ve been converted! Your video confirms the Tele rules!!
The jazzmaster in these comparisons is like the clarity when you hear after your ears have popped 😄
I just bought a strat but now all I want is a jazzmaster. Why do I do this to myself
Same heree
I was the same. No way I can afford to buy all the guitars I want. That's why learned how to build instead. Saved me a fortune!
its not the guitar it’s the guitarist
Strats are always needed. Just get a jazzmaster too.
me too )
The strat is a NEARLY perfect instrument. I own teles, jags, a vintage fender lap steel, have built several jazzmasters, the works...but I always return to my strats at the end of the day. The neck pickup is untouchable, the 2 and 4 positions are sent from the heavens...its only weakness is that godawful, thin bridge pickup. But guess what? You toss a tone zone s or a jb mini in there and BLAMMO. The guitar gods instantly present you with a perfect instrument. There’s nothing you can’t do with a good strat. I’ve played gb jazz sets, dance sets, prog rock, thrash metal, shoegaze...my number one strat eats it all for breakfast. The only guitar in my stable that bests it is the custom 24. That’s a guitar that comes perfect from the factory.
By the way, this means absolutely nothing in the way of diminishing the beauty of a good telecaster. A good, stock telecaster will probably get you farther than a stock strat. Its biggest strength is the strats biggest weakness. That bridge pickup...the telecaster bridge pickup is the sound of rock and roll.
i wish someone could talk to me the way you talk about your guitar 😔
@@danielchin7310 facts bro🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love the bridge pickup on strats. If you have a more modern one, you can roll off the treble a bit to hone it in
the telecaster for me has the better neck pu sound and the better in-between sound, so for me a telecaster is closer to the perfect guitar than a strat. i think both guitars are capable of doing any genre and are equally versatile. they both cover p much the same ground, just slightly different variations of the same thing. the strat can get more sounds, especially if you go crazy with coil taps/splits and the gilmour mod, but i always use all 3 pu combinations pretty equally on a telecaster. i rarely use certain sounds on a strat. usually just neck and middle, none of the in-between stuff (i know its blasphemous), and maybe the bridge pu if its a humbucker. tbh i think any guitar can do any genre as long as its played right and eq-ed right
@@sunkintree And add a baseplate to the bridge P/U to make it more like a Tele pickup. Alot of people that put a humbucker or humbucker models have it in the bridge. I wonder if theyve ever sold a Strat model with a Tele Bridge pickup. The Jazzmaster seems closest to a Stratocaster but thicker like a Tele. Alot of the tones that are played on Jazzmasters seems like you can get a similar tone on a Strat. Strat and Tele is a bigger difference.
Awesome video! I play a jazzmaster but have also used strats and teles before, and have always wondered what a proper side by side comparison like this would be like. For me, the jazzmaster is best because of that neck position sound, and I feel it is just a bit more present in a live mix in general.
There's no more mistery or doubts about how these 3 guitars sounds! Thanks Darrell!
OK... this is a bit strange...
For the clean stuff, hands down the Tele is the winner for me. For the dirt, it's the Jazzmaster across the board, with the Tele a close second. That is not what I expected. Look, I'm a Strat guy, though I do have one Tele... But all of my Strats have at least one humbucker and that's a an absolute necessity for me. I suspect the results would have been skewed more toward the Strat had it had a humbucker. Still, this was a surprising and very interesting tone test. Well done, as always, Darrell.
This is a 'the grass is always greener' scenario. As a fellow guitarist I can't ever shake the 'If I only had THAT guitar' and then I get it after saving up and I absolutely love it.... two weeks later, I'm looking at another version of it with some other feature or pickups or another style guitar altogether.
You may very well be correct. I'm certainly trying to avoid getting another guitar... I have too many as it is. That Jazzmaster, though... LOL.
They all sound the same to me.
Side Effects - I'd guess you're listening to the video through a phone, tablet or laptop.
Well thought out and executed demo. Each has its strength and weaknesses. Thank you for your time!
Darrell, you hit the nail on the head with your OWN final assessment of these three guitars! For the sake of complete versatility you'd need to own all three. The Jazzmaster's neck position surprised the hell outta me. Thanks for the review ;-)
I love the way the clean Jazzmaster sounds.
That Jazzmaster kicks so much ass, bought one the other day and i love it. Such a unique sound, the cleans are fantastic!
Darrell, thanks for the great comparison! So many comparisons are made with only distorted or pedal-altered tones, which doesn't show the true sound of the guitars & pickups. There are a lot of us out here that love the clean tones of Fender single coil pickups thru Fender tube (& now Tone Master) amps. I've been playing Teles for many years now (since a couple of days after the first time I tried one 25 years ago!), and am looking at Jazzmasters, so this was a real help!! Thanks again!!!
DB thank goodness. Finally a player/reviewer that remembers that electric guitars have a clean tone. Surprisingly I thought that the Tele could be confused with the Jazz on some of the settings.
For the way I play the Telecaster shines, but what people really like usually depends on what they're used to and what they like to hear. Likes most art forms it's a very individual thing
Amazing to me how similar they sounded in the neck, especially clean. This is truly a tough call, I love that Tele twang but I think I have to go Jazzmaster, Tele, Strat in an incredibly close race. You still owe us a comparison of all three playing late 50s early 60s tunes. Great vid as usual.
Your playing makes my day
this was so helpful for finding my first guitar!
From Leo: Tele, Strat and Jazzmaster. Great start to any collection. You need a couple of Gretsch guitars to round it out and you can cover anything. Metal can be obtained with effects. And yes, you can play jazz on a Gretsch.
Jazzmasters are SO underrated!
They can open up whole new sonic worlds to your playing.
Your comparison videos are the best!
Great comparison and video.
I'm actually surprised as hell to be so in love with the Jazzmaster sound! wasn't expecting that!! Still out of three - I still am dying inside of me for that glorious Telecaster
Ahh I gotta go with the strat on this one my man! But they all sound awesome!
Well done. So, now I know I need to get a Tele for my next project to go with the LPCP and the Squier Affinity that YOU got me started on (yes, you have created a monster-haha) and I still rock out on today. Thank you, sir. Please may I have another? (sorry...that's my best "poor waif" imitation). Keep 'em comin'. Cheers.
I didn't even know the Jazzmaster existed, I'm in love!
Expected the Jassmaster to have a deeper sound than the Strat, but was surprised it was brighter/thinner. Also didn't expect the Tele to have the fullest/bassiest bridge sound of them all, but it did by a longshot. I really like how woody/scooped the Tele neck pickup sounds -- I love that sound. I've been a longtime Strat player and have always really like the balanced, focused sound -- both sits well in a mix and cuts well through a mix. Jazzmaster seems fine for rhythm that you want to kind of disappear into/fill out the mix, but a bit limited otherwise.
I found myself anxiously awaiting the Jazzmaster's turn. Darrell, can you do a comparison with Dixe Cups and string next? I just want to check something out.
I think I'm a Tele fan, but I was totally blown away by the Jazzmaster pickups clarity. Impressive.
What I noticed with this is that the jazzmaster really gets into some nice punk rock tones with the gain and overdrive on which is super cool! The jazzmaster is definitely my dream guitar!
Wow, there wasn't a real winner for me they all did stuff better in different ways, all beautiful axes, but he was right about the tele bridge the best by far no comparison to it, grrreat video!!!! BAM!!!!!!
I'd be glad to see a Jaguar. It's like an underrated bro of Jazzmaster and it sounds really interesting.
Great comparisons, Darrell!...Always the Strat for me but I do agree with you that I love the fat sound of the Tele bridge vs the twangy of the Strat bridge...Keep these comparisons coming!...
Excellent video Darrell, as classy as the geetars it demoed - great stuff :-)
i'm in love with the jazzmaster
The jazzmaster is the one guitar that the cool band member would be playing while everyone else has like a strat or tele
You are very good at explanation and presentation. Well done Darrell!
Thanks for starting with clean tones. That's the only way to tell the difference between different guitars.
Awesome as always!
"The Telecaster bridge reigns supreme always and forever", AMEN! If only I could get that tone out of a Strat body without dropping 300USD on a Warmoth hybrid body! I wonder how Strat pups like the Twangbanger compare to a real Tele bridge?
They all sounded great, but I’m surprised the Jazzmaster was the best to my ears. I fully expected the Strat to sound the best, them Jazz, Tele. That Jazz is absolutely beautiful by the way, and sounds so crisp, would love to hear some fuzz with it.
Great demo ! Thanks for posting it.
Really appreciate the "apples to apples" comparisons-thank you!
The bridge on Telecaster sounds amazing. My guitar is a Strat but the sound of the Tele is amazing
dudeya You can put a tele pickup the bridge pos of the strat whitout any major modification to get some intresting sounds that you may like.:D
@@zsoltwohner8963 very good idea. I'm changing pickups for some 65 vintages. If the bridge pickup doesn't suit my style I will try the Tele bridge pickup for sure!
I'll take all three, thank you very much.
Thank you Darrell for posting this video.
I have been a strat lover since starting 20 years ago, but 5 years ago I built a tele and was then devoted to both those models. Then I got a used jm, and I love them all now! Actually in the last few years I haven’t really played a guitar that I didn’t like, I think they are all better than when I started playing! I love your putting these together in one video thank you!
Really good comparison.but I will take the strat.more of what I like
The Tele sounded surprisingly stronger than the others through the bridge pickup during higher gain rhythm playing.
It's really hard to pick one type because I love the Jazzmaster style and Strats produce the coolest sounds I ever heard.
Saying this as a die hard Gibson fan.
Great comparison!!
1950 first Fender electric guitar was named "Broadcaster". The Gretsch Company contacted Fender to abandon using that name, because it was very similar to "Broadkaster", a company drum set. "Nocaster" was a temporal name until "Telecaster" name was finally adopted. Great comparison video, good job indeed! Like!
The Esquire with one pick up was first. Nocaster was not a name. It was Broadcasters without the label.
The Jazzmaster have a more complex tone, with a lot of harmonics (that's why they sound fantastic with reverb), an unique middle position and the high medium frequencies cut though the mix very well.
Love the meatier tone of the Telecaster on the bridge position.
The strat is always on the run with the middle position.
Whos the winner? Darrell he's got all these freakin Fender guitars!
I have never thought that Jazzmaster has those beautiful sounds better than the other two models.. Amazing!
Cheers from Indonesia.
I saw an ad for guitar-a-thon and metal music was playing in the background while ukuleles and Acoustics were being shown off... what year am I living in
I agree ...Cannot beat a tele bridge pickup. Plays and cuts through everything. Broadcaster CS bridge I think is my favorite one.
The moral of the story: start with strat but eventually get a Tele and a Jazzmaster too ;) I stopped buying too much gear at some point and a strat is just such a great allrounder. Enjoyed the video, thanks buddy
Love my Tele, love my Strat, for different reasons. Never had a Jazzmaster... but you're definitely gettin' my curiosity up about them!
I know people already said it but damn! I didn't expect to love the Jazzmaster this much!
Another great vid Darrell 👍🏻 I thought the jazz masters tone was pretty good over the tele. But in the end I still chose the Strat , another biased choice on my part.. lol. If I were to go out & grab a tele or a jazz master , I’m pretty sure I’d pick the jazz master. It sounded a lot like a strat @ some points , but also heightened some particular tones as well. Very good comparison between all the models , really enjoyed it. 🤙🏻🎸
In my opinion:
1. Stratocaster
2. Jazz master
3. Telecaster
why ?
Flip the list and your right
THAT is the way to compare guitars! Excellent.
Thanks for the nice video
Each of em is a beast in its own way
I want em all 😁
I think the telecaster is my favorite, so rich.
Tele forever mate. Best clean sound so you can do anything to it. I have a early 90's Tele plus with red lace humbuckers real rock machine I'll never part with it. Thanks for all your efforts in these awesome videos.
No fuss, no muss. Just good content. Getting rarer on here. Great channel!
Jeez! Already have an old Tele and a Jimmie Vaughan Strat but that Jazzmaster is killer! Live that color too! My next guitar.
