Near the end Laura wants to show us the topiaries and apologizes because she’s showing us one more thing! 😂 Does she even know us? We are all dying for the camera to pan all over the greenhouse, and have a peek at the projects that we have watched her do! So excited for the new gardening season!

OK, onion planting time. I will do it this weekend. But I planted shallot bulbs in the ground in the fall around the time I planted my garlic, the variety I grow will form multiple bulbs around the bulb i planted, and when ready to harvest, they literally push themselves out of the ground. I love Shallots. I have learned so much from you on growing my own food, and I'm not a beginner. Thank you!

Last year I attempted growing onions for the first time from seed. I had great success with germination and was so proud of all my healthy little starts with lots of beautiful roots. However, the plants put on very little growth and the bulb part never got bigger than about an inch or 2 in diameter. They were planted in Espoma raised bed mix near my peppers, tomatoes, and beans, which were fertilized (with garden tone) and watered the same amount and did amazing. Where did I go wrong? Do they need more fertilizer and or water than my other veggies? I chose a long day variety which is appropriate for my latitude. Thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge and experience with us. I am the passionate gardener that I am today largely thanks to you. 💕

Now you’re in my wheelhouse. You may remember me saying I grew up near where you are. On a farm outside Nyssa. We grew yellow sweet Spanish onions 🧅 and russet potatoes (some red potatoes, too) my dad was president of Oregon onion growers association years ago. I am an onion snob and hate having to buy onions and potatoes in the grocery stores. I was somewhat instrumental getting a grocery store in Boise to buy more local onions, telling off their produce manager for buying Mexican grown onions - when the best onions in the country were grown 50 miles from them. So if growing your own is possible, I highly recommend it! 💚💚💚

Have you ever tried starting the onion seeds in an open flat kind of like sprouts? I start them in open flats, trim them back once , then prick them out and pot them up. It saves a lot of seed starting room. I have even left them close together in the float and them planted them out from there but found they get a bigger if they are potted up first. Also, you had a lot of seed left over. Do you get good germination if you save them for a second year?
