I have a story about a yard sale and "ripping off the seller". This was in 1987. I come upon a yard sale on my way home from work. They didn't have much out but it was late in the afternoon so I figured it was well picked over but stopped anyway. They had some costume jewelry, mostly necklaces. I asked if they had any brooches or pins, as I collected those. They said they might have and went into the house. They emerged a few minutes later with a little black velvet box and it had 5 older looking brooches in it. The person running the sale looked middle aged and seemed like they were having a bad day or really sad. I didn't know what was wrong and didn't ask, unfortunately. The brooches were beautiful and I immediately felt guilty for asking for them because I felt they would want a lot for them. I oooed and awed over them and asked "How much?" They stood there a minute looking at them and then said "Is a $1.00 each to much? I said "Sounds good!" and took them all. When I got home, I showed them to my Mom and she said "That red one looks real". So the next day I took it to a local jewelry store I often shopped at and knew the jeweler there very well. He looked at it and said yes, that's real rubies and diamonds. No makers mark but it was marked Sterling and looked to be from the 1940's. He asked if I wanted to sell it, said he would give me $100 right there for it. I said no. A few days later, I stopped at that house that had the sale because I was going to ask if she wanted that one back because it was valuable or give her more money at the very least but the house was empty. I went to the neighbors house and asked about the people next door and they said they moved out the day after I was there at the sale. I sold that pin in the 1990's a local jewelry consignment shop and made $1500 on it. I sold 3 of the vintage costume pieces for a couple of hundred and kept my favorite costume piece, which I still have to this day. I have always wondered what was really going on that day. If there was death, a divorce, was the stuff stolen?! I'll never know but the moral of the story is sometimes people do go back to yard sales to offer the seller more money.

Anyway, the dumbest question I would get a few times was people who would ask if I would scan all the pages and send them electronically so they didn't have to buy a $100+ book. I, of course, always declined.

I guess what people don’t realize is we have to use our gas & time to go out & look for these things to sell. I find it fun, but is in no way cheap!! You end up buying lunch most times while your out looking also. We also have to buy the shipping supplies to mail them & take time to properly describe & take pictures of them. So it’s not cheating anyone. If they want to go look for these items like we do they can!!😊

When I see or hear about people accusing someone of "cheating"..... do they really understand the retail market of which they likely shop every day for the things they want and need to live their lives? Meaning, what country is stuff made, what wages are the paying their workers (not to get political), what is the mark up when they go buy it at the big box stores, what kinda of tax breaks do those companies get, etc., etc., etc. So you participate in companies "cheating" you daily, yet you don't complain and continue to buy their stuff without a blink of an eye.

You’re not cheating people. You are preserving things that people like, and want to collect as well. Many collectibles and vintage items might otherwise be thrown out. These things are valuable to many people.
Also, some things sold by resellers are less expensive than new products. I’ve always looked at the used in order to get something for a more affordable price. I go to close out stores like Ollie’s as well. 🤷
The thrift stores and other people are trying to make money like as if the item was sold on eBay. Those people don’t have to pay the taxes, or ship their tax free items. They don’t even have to source. They get the items brought to them.

Wrote fragile all the way around and put a dont stack sticker on that i watched them toss over a wall and hit the floor. The order was almost $400 and sure enough it arrived broken. Not only was the outside box destroyed but the inside box that was also bubble wrapped was smashed flat. Now USPS is paying an insurance claim to an excessively nice and understanding buyer. I think you should do a fun clip and the correct way to package glass, show the packaging, stand on a ladder and drop it. Then open it and see if it survived. Use a piece of glassware that isn't worth anything just in case. I think it would be a fun experiment of how to and how not to package glass items.

We know how, where and when to find the goods, how to negotiate our platforms, and so on. Nothing slimy or unethical about it. “Buyers” in retail have negotiated prices since the beginning of time. It is a good idea to pursue a business license. When you form a LLC it protects your personal assets versus the business assets in the case of you ever getting sued. People can sue for any reason these days. No you don't need the license, but it is more of an insurance policy to protect yourself. It also allows for you to become a tax free buyer when you are buying from auctions or other formats that will charge you tax. There are some small perks.

I agree with you all the way. I'm in this to make money. Just like any store, or any other flipper. If I pay what they are asking, then why can't I sell it for what I want? We have time invested, in travel, listing, packaging, and taking pictures. We have fees and taxes to pay. I just bought three ps3 games for $3 and sold two of them within days for a total of $55.

I’m frustrated by the comments you get sometimes. I wonder if these people shop at yard sales? The people that shop at my sales will offer 10 cents for something marked a quarter 😮. I’ll say no. Clearly if I want to give it away I will take it to a charity thrift store and they can sell the same item for 4.00. I’d rather they get that money. What you do as a business and the charity work you support 🎉🎉 are very kind. The fact that you film your activity and share with people is nice. You be salty when you need too! Don’t ever change. FYI …you haven’t stopped teaching, you just make more for it now. Thank you.

So the mentality of a person holding a garage sale is much different than someone who has a resale business. The garage sale wants to get rid of things fast and they have a small market of people who would be willing to buy their things. That means demand is low, so price is low. A reseller on Ebay has the storage space, is not necessarily looking to speed sell a lot of items fast, and has a much broader market because Ebay is international. That means more potential buyers are going to be interested, and that brings the price up. Not to mention, the reseller is also making things available to someone who wouldn't have access to a small yard sale across the country or world, so the buyer is paying for the convenience and service of sourcing, storing, and shipping the item. All things that cost money. There's no need to go back and pay a garage sale seller more because they had the option to sell it on eBay themselves. However, they chose to focus on getting rid of volume quickly instead of waiting for a buyer who would pay more, which takes a lot more time, resources, and energy.

People that don't resell, just don't get it. You have: TIME, gas, wear and tear on your vehicle, cost of goods, eBay fees and store subscription costs, etc. Time packing, printing labels, cost of shipping materials, driving packages to the shippers. Hopefully, in the end, you make a little money. Sellers don't cheat people, buyers decide to buy it now or bid, and how much they bid is their choice! Please don't be so quick to judge.

For some reason I can’t stand when someone messages me and asks me what’s the lowest I’d take for a item. Even though it’s not a dumb question per say. I guess the problem I have is you’ll tell them and 99.9999% of the time they don’t buy the item. Maybe I’d rather them make the offer first. Whoever made the suggestion of going back into old dead listings that aren’t selling and ending them then selling a similar item ( basically the same item) is a genius. I’ve sold 3 items today using that method 2 of which I even upped the price I had on item initially.
