The Ocean Cleanup was founded by Dutch inventor Boyan Slat. The 25-year-old invented a floating device that catches garbage before it reaches the sea when he was just 18 years old, and now he is expanding his mission to rivers too.
The Ocean Cleanup’s original mission was to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, but after realizing rivers are the main source of plastic going into the ocean, The Ocean Cleanup decided it was time to come up with a new, additional idea to tackle river plastic pollution.
And so, the latest plastic collecting invention is called the Interceptor-the mechanism scoops plastic from rivers as it drifts past, and then when it is full, it can shoot a text to the operator alerting that it needs to be emptied before continuing.
On this One Small Step Spotlight, Lucy sits down with Boyan Slat (over Skype) to learn more about the new piece of tech and The Ocean Cleanup’s overall goal of ridding the Earth’s waters of plastic waste.

I really love it when someone is asking " When is that wonderful project starting or when can we expect this or this etc."
answer : It already begun 🤯😎
This kind of video makes me have hope again.
Yeah if they will recycle it which was not even mentioned in the video. If not, then it's a useless effort. As many called it here, it's a scam.
i3 13
What if they burn it for energy? Many cities use garbage for energy, instead of natural non-renewable resources like coal.
Philippines desperately needs one of these :( We are known as the 3rd largest source of plastic in the Ocean next to China and Indonesia
Yes. I would love to see at least 1 for each Philippines islands. If not more. I won't blame the manufacturers but the end users of plastics and what they do with them after their usefulness. We need All Peoples to stop throwing away their garbage where ever they want.
Amazing! Besides this, we need to start consuming less plastic in our day to day life, it's just about changing some habits
Thank you for letting me know about their amazing work! I just donated.
Thatis so amazing. My oldest daughter has made herself a project in homeschool. She went to our local recycling center here where we live and got a list of all things we can recycle and has started on the upcycle project I'm doing. Taking old clothes and making them into something new. She's found alot of crafty projects for denim.
Lacy Hay
you are actually doing something to help.. bravo
Tell her to snort the white powder she finds at the recycle center
@@13Krentebol that's not nice.
Thanks for taking up the initiative to save mother earth
God bless this kind of a person.
Great job Ocean Cleanup!!!
A most excellent endeavor. I have tremendous appreciation for innovators like Boyan Slat. He inspires me to make a contribution to the world also.
India needs this...good work👏
We are in this together!
Thank you!!!! So wonderful!!!
This video made my day. And I'm glad that they're not just tackling the actual pollution but the cause too. I wish them nothing but the best.
Well, the real cause is complex but mostly capitalism and also ignorance.
YES! Finally we can get captain of industry in here that does not focus on cheap replicable things to make a profit.
like to see vid of ocean system actually capturing plastic
So great to see someone in engineering and research developing something to BENEFIT they world!! I see so many scientists working in building AI, better, faster computers, whatever can benefit the bank accounts for themselves or whoever they work for. As the fires burn away the Amazon rain forests, the birds and the bees due without reason. Children are more sicker than ever...Its as though they are TRYING to kill the Earth. It's freaky great to see something positive for our environment! 🎭
So happy you're back!!!
Great series!
Great educational video❣💕
Thanks for not giving up
Wow. Mind blown.
3:54 - what do you think about plastic? This was a great opportunity for him to talk about alternatives such as hemp but he just said plastic is great, but we need to rethink how we use it.
Everything about ur video is nicely made.
i fully agree
Goal 14: Life Below Water is being taken seiously. Nice!
He is Dutch after all, they now all about that. ;-)
Thats amazing
Our creator have made us for a reason to work together to better the world
Yay! You're back :)
awesome video
How does the plastic get into the rivers?
Wow way to misunderstand the dude. He just explained why he just moved to rivers then you ask why pivot to rivers. Come on now.
That selfie thing was bad don’t do that it looks terrible
0:20 🎵 *dope*
1:34 Is that a backpack floating with the rubbish??
Yep
Cool
What about all the natural plants and small organisms that they are taking from the rivers? Wouldnt that eventually effect its locations natural habitats some how. Not bashing this I think it's great just was wondering If anyone else would know? thanks!
Ya wat abt small fishes..I wonder how would they solve that
It is a passive system and only floating debris is collected, so impact on the habitat is minimal, if any.
@@thorin2667 what about the sea one...
They're bring it to my country to clean the most polluted river, the Ozama River :)
This is where social media at his best.
So what about the submarine capsules with waste that gets dropped
Next step : Record the guy recording the girl recording herself
Selfieception.
Have you by chance heard of someone named Mr. Beast? Lol.
My slime my slime my slatt
Ocean Cleanup > 4Ocean
He his Elon Musk level person!
He says all the plastic is going to be recycled but surely that's impossible ?
This is good but still lacking in recycling plants.
Don't fund 4ocean, please fund this! There actually making a difference!
Umm or we could just stop throwing plastic into the river?
Just get rid of the oceans! Problem solved.
Be careful what you buy.
Good job but Seriously why are we mopping the floor when we should be turning off the tap doesn't make a lot of sense to me
and oh yeah, recycling int really a thing, its more cost effective to burn it, witch will land it back in the ocean, it being the carbon sink lol
You need grammar and spelling lessons it's which not witch STUPID
Cost effective..... at the detriment to our planet. Douf is a doofus
@XvAvX Their comment was an insult to someone taking the initiative to solve a real problem of pollution so yes I found that person to be "STUPID" so if you plan to post and have your opinion read then maybe spelling should be a priority or it becomes a failure to communicate
"harvesting" i do not really like this word for the reason imply (4:42) should have been written "picking up"
I'm saying that because you are not "harvesting" something because you planted it in the ground to then make use of it later..
Just to tell you folks making the videos. Hated the intro where she filmed herself while being filmed.
