That's 100% correct: History is written by the historians who get the grants. I'm sad to hear that the PhD didn't work out. I'm sadder that history doesn't get the funding it deserves in academia.
I live beside the old site of RAF Evanton/Novar. While reading an essay in a 2005 edition of the Scottish Geographical Journal (Scotlands Wartime Airlfields: Conflict and Legacy - Keith Bryers) it mentions the use of this airfield in US spy balloon operations post war. Sadly it doesn't provide many further details but it's interesting to find out that this work was also done elsewhere.
I gave a brief on Holy Loch at work recently. Very interesting subject matter.
