- Ean Golden invites Q to DJ Techtools for an impromptu jam session. Hope this inspires all the turntablists and controllerists out there to make some music! Thanks to Thud Rumble and DJ Techtools for making this happen.
the controllerist and the turntablist in complete harmony. Ultimate manipulation! I think i jizzed a little.
well I like it.. great out come
awsome work!
@jeremyelrick Because from where's I´m sitting, it's fairly obvious why he's doing it - he's using the MIDI Fighter to trigger cue points, and then cutting out of the channel using the crossfader when he doesn't want the track to play anymore, just like a turntablist does to create the rhythm of the scratch. Controllerism is it's own thing, with it's own ways of doing things and methods of improvisation, and unless you´ve looked into how it's actually done, I´d refrain from criticism.
amazing!!
Qbert is good. But the video effects are giving me headache.
new song to my MP3
@thirdflooruk It's a custom Midi Fighter available in the djtechtools online store
What kind of sampler is Ean using?
whats the name of the beat that comes in at bout 6 08??
the greenday thing sounded cool but the white stripes and ice ice baby are both in other ean golden videos. surely he could have come up with something new by now... i agree with people saying he tries to make it look like he's doing more than he is (not to say some of what he's doing doesnt sound awesome, not everything has to be complicated) but random hand movements just look weird
on fire
what's the name of the song/artist/album whatever in 00:30 - 02:30 !!?? Anyone ?
Easy to be jealous when you can't do what they do ha!
Qbert is a fucking god.
AraabMuzik is a waaaay better button pusher than Ean Golden
@zagorowsky A TRIBE CALLED QUEST CAN I KICK IT
THIS doesn't sound good???? WTF? You must be one of those trance/dance guys or somethin. Because this is hot.
get fruity loops its way better than that trash.
It looks like ean is getting a tiny shock every time he hits a button and moves his hand away.
@Darwinist Controllersim, as it exists now, is basically an advanced form of djing..... you fundamentally cannot produce notes... only sounds.
The best scratch Dj in the world with the best button pusher in the world! Truly an amalgamation of old school analogue and cutting edge tech
The song goes: I'm having trouble trying to sleep (scratch scratchy scratch...) I'm counting sheep but running out (scratch scratchy scratch...) LOL
Is it just me or when the vanilla ice section hits does it look like qbert rolls his eyes like he's thinking, "I can't believe I'm scratching to this whack shit."
Respect for Ean Golden for all he's done but boy he was not ready to jam with Q bert . Or to put it differently , there was no natural vibe . He felt like a nuisance all the way to me .
never heard your name before buddy, but these two dudes i have been gaining respect and Huge Corporations are backing them up and sponsoring them, how many you got buddy,,, or are you a loyalist to the underground... god bless you what ever your name is...
@jeremyelrick
If you use that definition, then a MIDI piano hooked up to a hardware sampler with a large multisample map of a piano is not an instrument either. All it does is what Traktor does basically - accept midi messages and play snippets of audio on command from a controller, any controller.
The point isn't how hard it is to pull off a performance. The point is how good it sounds. That's what people care about.
DJ'ing is not a "Who can do it the most difficult way" competition.
2 of the best .....ever .....nuff said
I want to see a 4by4 with Babu the Turntablist and Ean Golden the Controllerist.
that guy you talking about in the right is midi master himself eangolden you should watch his videos hes epic
@B6Quattro I do get your point quattro and I agree that midi controllers have a huge amount of potential. I started djing on vinyl but ended up using controllers (maybe take a look at some of my vids)... I'm not against new technology and techniques I just think it's how they are used. Ean defines controllerism as "using controllers to emulate turntable techniques" which I think is hugely limiting on what they can do and after all..why not learn to scratch it sounds better and looks cooler:)
@B6Quattro I really don't want to sound like a hater but I just want to clarify my point:) If this video was like "controllerist produces live beats/mash ups while turntablist does his thing" I'd think it was cool. It's just all the unnecessary crabbing and body movements in an attempt to emulate a turntablist that I find let controllerism down.
lol look at him though, he's just so into it, he's in the fucking zone making music and loving life in the moment :)
annoys me and makes me happy at the same time
never mind about the other comments guys cause its you two stood there in front of the cameras.....lol, even if you do have a few foibles....Excellent stuff
i play edm with turntables and i don't like them i much prefer use timecodes and add effects and loops, is much better and you have huge more "things" to add to the music
Wow the other guys hand movements are cringeworthy.... so embarrasing
Both highly talented and gifted. God bless and Big Aloha in Jesus name :)
two people just having fun, and making good sounds. its just damn chill.
Lou Read - Walk on the Wild Side , TCQ - Can I Kick It lol newbz pffff
A difficulty that borders on the impossible. DJ Qbert the "Jimi Hendrix" of scratching stands alone even when compared to his counterpart MixMasterMike. Where MMM dominates in beat juggling GrandMasterQ-Bert is one of a kind; catering specifically to one deck scratching R. Quitevis represents a lost era where DJs dictated the flow of a party. Now with ipods and playlists DJs are many but great ones are few and far between. Without vocals, without lyrics scratching still speaks & it's fun2listen.
I see(Q-Bert)really DJing "scratching, cutting"and Ean pushing buttons..call me old fashioned but this isn't the best way to showcase "controllerism"..
One thing takes hours/years of practice and the other takes timing(pressing buttons)..that's the real talk right there man.
Q has the edge. he relies only on raw technology turntables (which is far earlier than modern push button midi controllers). and his unbelievable skills. it's harder to manipulate vinyl than digital stuffs
Love Ean's little Midi Fighters too. First midis out with slick, easily pressed buttons unlike a drum pad like an Akai where you can't just tap the button
This is dope.
turntablism goes to decodificate music sound, like search the matrix...but turntablist love musicallilty too ad other works demostrate this
Did anyone else notice how many cords Ean's got as opposed to Qbert??
haha
for you and me but for cats like qbert that are important to hip hop culture that was something weird!
This coming from someone with the username UrbanCrunkMovement..Dude,crunk is total crap, thats all I hv to say.tc
It's like when you let the simple kid join in, you can press a couple of buttons and pretend your doing something.
dope!
That my friend, is not only "good stuff", u wont see that from another duo like this. This is a living legend in action. Qbert is not copyable. Big ups
You can play with the tool you want... the important thing is the result!
Haha, sorry man. I'm a PhD student--thinking is what I tend to do a lot of.
but no matter what, everybody knows that song was the shit.
Ean looks like he has turrets sometimes, not talking shit he's great but damn dude!!
This shit is SICK! Ean Golden, you rock bro.
i almost was pissed at this comment...then i liked it
I think its a special edition colored vinyl of Scratchy Seal.
@plbenoit unless all that arm flailing and long hair is impressive.
and having to bear with a**holes in the crowd while attempting the steps you mentioned,brah..thats seriously a big pain esp when youre new to the scene..
Demmit X24! I feel like when we used to watch 'free' cable. Or like it's poltergeist. At least you didn't distort the sound. And, yah, I kinda get it, but argh. Otherwise, it's hella clean.
can u give any one of those mixers behind you as a charity ? :(
so where do i send the 0.99 cents for this jam?
@chris24g HAHA A TRIBE SAMPLED THAT ISH PROPER THOUGH
This makes me want a Midi Fighter.
This fucking dope guys. Keep up the good work.
I'm really not digging this at all. Fair enough if Ean wants to lay down beats for qbert but he's waving his arms around, making jerky movements and crabbing the x fader - none of which actually seem to be having any significant effect on the music and it all seems a bit pretend. In my view the future of djing is a combination of controllers and instruments played in real time. A turntable when scratched is an instrument... a midi controller is not.
Q's cuts needed to be turned up. just sayin'...
@Darwinist played - yes but from a certain set of pre stored/programmed slices of music or fx - It is not in essence to able to produce new original musixal compostions (live remixing does to a certain extent) and is hence not an instrument.
Ean Golden is a bad idea. Did he pay to have Qbert on? And watch him flinch his hands for DRAMATIC EFFECT after he presses down different buttons as if what he is doing requires actual talent. And selecting Vanilla Ice demonstrates how lame he really is despite qbert's somewhat pathetic, repetitive accompaniment. push button doing, yeah man!!!!
+birddogfreemann Agreed. Ean is edging in the middle for me and nearly every video he does that vanilla ice ice baby crap...lame and irritating. He has his moments, but they aren't enough
i love it how Ean Golds throws his hands in the air so dramatically after pushing the buttons. respect to both
Jesus and Jimmy Hendrix.
ice ice baby...mix is fuckin dopeeeee~!!!!!!
He does cut the beat out a bit, but there are definitely a few times like 3:53 and 7:29 where he is just twitching his hands around the fader. It's really weird.
Lol at ppl quoting 'can I kick it' do u even know where the original sample comes from??? Take a walk on the wile side....
this is sick!! two legends each on their instrument of choice and having fun while killing what could be better!
They both getting it in! I like the set up Golden is rockin it pretty dope! Qbert just blacks out. He could rock a cut to a baby crying and an old lady farting he don't give a fuck
That is Brain Stew from Insomniac
8 people love will young!!!
The best at what they do. Love Ean, DJ Qbert, AarabMuzik. Michael Jordans of their craft.
Take a walk on the wild side!
Qbert and Jesus!
I SEE JESUS!
what aloada tosh
Pfft Pablo andrade turntables started! Everything and turntables r much harder then pushing bottons! So yeah that why Dj qbert it the greatest dj what happend 2 spinning now a days the program ur using tells you ur BPM! Let's see u do it with out ur dj program just on vinyl bett you can't and now all midis are u just push bottons and midis are funn no pushing the bottons sound and look booooorrinnnnggggg.
Yea.... Ean's hand flick never ceases to drive me nuts...
dude just hit the button, you aren't David Copperfield, it's not a magic trick.
LOL, can someone please make a parody video ? " Ean Golden Dialing a phone number " - complete with crazy hand flick and righteous hair tossing head bangs with each successful press of a number.
BTW I def do the Ean Golden every time I choose a floor on a elevator or change a channel. Fuck ya I changed that channel !
@jeremyelrick That is just not true. An instrument is anything that can produce either pitches sounds or percussive noises when pressed, stroked, bowed, strummed or whatnot. Saying that a MIDI controller isn't an instrument because it needs to be hooked up to a computer is like saying a turntable isn't an instrument because it needs to be hooked up to an amplifier.
Also, if you don't do controllerism, how the hell do you know if Ean's crabbing of the fader is unneccesary or not?
Fuckin amazing experiment :)
I prefer to use cassettes or gramophones for my performances.
It's especially ironic because a lot of people who play instruments (and a lot of the public) would say the same things about vinyl DJs...
Dude ean Golden is the man, but everyone seriously watch him? He's not doing much. Throwing a lot of hand flares when he presses the button one time though. Watch when he's pressing the crossfader...Sometimes he's not even touching it just doing lil finger moveevts to look like he's cutting.
Hey, I really didn't mean to offend. You might want to go back and read my entire comment, haha. The introductory statement was supposed to illuminate the general ignorance of individuals who typically make comments like that.
Nice combination,
and i guess it was nice session.
Q-bert,timecode vinyls? what they are...good scracthing,as always.
Ean Golden,nice beats.The "Pack-Man" buttons.OK.Work.´s.
Thank you both.
@chris24g dude if your camera growing up was that glitchy as a kid you needed a new cam...using a turntable speaks enough old school! besides its qbert nothing needs to be said. he speaks for himself.
Big respect to both artists but Q wins hands down as a DJ on technical skills
yo im a dj,huge respect to dj Qbert,i only use VYNL!i frikkin HATE all this serato, electronic dj bullshit!!!!! stick to what we were chasing back in the days!!!!1200s and our records!!!!
well the older generation never likes what the newer generation does...i guess its just a thing that will allways happen.
@lolfag3 lol but was nice of him to provide a beat for bert to scratch over
I highly respect these 2 icons! but the "little man" with the analog weapon wins it vs today's high technology
And don't forget, in order to apply all these simple steps..... You have to have advanced hand dexterity.....
These video effects are really distracting. Sorry dude, I want to see them doing their thing, not a wavy line going down the screen every 15 seconds.
