First time rider, and a senior to boot! Hey, it's my second childhood. Picked up a 2001 Yamaha XT225, and cannot wait to ride it. Your videos will be a BIG help, and I just wanted to say THANKS!
There’s also a small o-ring under the “drain bolt” on the filter cover to be careful not to let it fall out. Should replace it and the cover o-ring every third or so change. No real need to “fill” the OF cavity. Manual does say to crack the oil vent bolt on the head (left of spark plug) until oil comes out to ensure oil is primed up into the valve train. Just picked up a 92 and did all the maintenance. Since it only holds 1.2 qts, I actually changed the oil only first to flush it, ran it for 10 minutes, then drained and did the filter & oil. Got some additional dirty oil out of the system. Thanks for the vid!
Extremely helpful and well, I'd wager you have some teaching experience under the belt.. because your making sense of everything I had no idea the things i'd learn here.. Im sitting waiting for a modified Yamaha Serow which will boast a XT 200 engine. before i get deliver I hope i can guzzle as much of your channels intel as possible. Many thanks for the well thought out and well im Impressed.. Well done!
Hey Jaun, picked up a 225 and found your video and right away starting thinking, "I know this guy", till it hit me: Oriville dam. Loved those shots from the Luscomb and your concise explanations. You have applied your fine touch to the oil change. My favorite video is the terrific downhill sled run with your grandchild on top. Thanks for your careful work and light touch. Willy
Nice tidy video thankyou. Never been a fan of gauze filters, as paper does a better job. Genuine filters are gauze, as are the K and N. But I have found on amazon, a paper filter that I now use. I don't ride it too much as I have a couple of other bikes, but I change the oil/filter every 12 mths. Its an 05 225 16 k on it, great bike, great in the bush and has good road manners, Take care.
19mm isn't an odd ball size it's honestly great because most sets give you both a 19mm and 3/4" and they are the closest of all metric/imperial sizes at 0.003" difference, so you should almost always have one lying around!
Great videos to learn from. I did just pick up a 1996 xt 225. I was wondering if anyone had experience with issues removing engine protector/bash plate. When trying to remove mine, the bolt just spins and spins. I can't really see what is behind the protector but assume it screws into frame or some type of nut. Anyone have any advice on how to remove this if bolt is just spinning? I can't see to get any tool on the back end of bolt so assume it attaches to frame.
I use Castrol GTX 20w50 car oil. But I change it every 1000 miles. I've also changed it after a single day of riding in the dusty AZ desert. Diesel oil is even better than motorcycle oil because it has more zinc and phosphorus in it. But you can't find it in 20w50. Be VERY VERY careful not to use the oil filter for the XT250. It will destroy your engine. Dealer parts departments have been known to give people the wrong filter. My 1994 does not have a filter, it has a reusable screen. I've been reusing that same screen since I bought it back in 2008. I don't use a torque wrench. I've seen too many bolts, nuts, and threaded holes stripped from using torque wrenches. Just "snug it up"
I changed my crankcase gasket and I lost a little oil. I heard you use the same oil as in the engine. The question do I add the oil in the normal fill plug on the right side of the bike? Does it feed into the crankcase from there?
Blancolirio: This may not apply to cartridge filters inside housings, but it is necessary to apply a thin coat of oil to the seal(s) in order for them to seal properly for automotive canister filters. To be safe, I will be doing that rather than installing this bike filter dry. You may know better than I; my post may be irrelevant.
You never mentioned what the manual says, which is after changing the oil to check the oil pressure by removing the check bolt in the cylinder head. Start the engine and idle the engine until oil flows out of the bleed hole.
Great point! Only the older manual shows that and it is necessary because some oil filters (TTR-225) do not have small holes in them and will lock up the engine-not necessary with the correct oil filter. It verifies the correct filter for the unwary.
Be mindful of ethanol content of gas your using..my 98 is real finicky about gas...anything over 10% and it wont run very good at all...its a real pain in the ass

Thanks Willy!
My '97 looks just like your 2004. Thanks for the great video!

Thanks for the great video! Just about to do this on my '04 and it's great info to have.
Thanks heaps easy too follow instructions may save allot of motors.
Great little bike, will not be selling mine anytime soon. Best prospecting bike around. Cheers for the upload
A real mountain goat!

I've been on the hunt for one of these for my wife. It seems like a great companion to my old DR350SE.
Low mile, clean ones are available on Craigslist!
Your Videos are GREAT and I watch them closely Thank You. Good Job!
i have that exact same torque wrench ! thanks for the video
Thanks again - needed the reminder - great thorough engine lube ! Merry Christmas !!
Nice torque wrenches.. tick-tick tick-tick Lol! Mine looks almost identical.
Really useful video. I don't have this bike, but looking for one. There is one for sell but have 40k mi on the clock, and that scarys me a bit.
The filter can be reused almost indefinitely as long as it has no damage. A quick rinse with varsol etc cleans it up.
Just check the rubber
I wondered this as well thanks

Its stripped. Put a small pry bar between the bash plate and engine case and gently push down while unthreading bolt.

Do you use any friction modofiers or additives for the clutch?
Also I've broken more bolts with a torque wrench than without somehow...
Thank you for your great video! Very helpful!
Great video very helpful although I wish I watched this before I did my oil change 😂
Maybe there is a difference between element filters, i heard low oil flow can cause damage. Maybe strainer is less restrictive compared to paper?
THANKS HOSS!
nice video, thanks

And the drain plug o-ring should also be lubed-up before reinstallation.
So useful thanks! Where’d you get that awesome torque wrench?!
Hi sir, how do we service that rear shock canister near the horn? I have turned mmy knob and no change with rear shock hardening. Kindly
Hi , I was wondering if the yamaha xt 225 brazilian has the same motor as the xt 225 serow
thanks need to do a oil change on my 06 xt225 I just bought she only has 1880 miles .
Thanks!!

I will never sell mine! Just put in the a 16 tooth sprocket in hopes of better road use!
how did it work
