Thank you for taking the time to document this whole process and letting us get a chance to see every step start to finish. it's extremely satisfying and fun to watch a skilled craftsman create something so beautiful from essentially nothing. it is a privilege to watch you work.
Thank you for your comments. Glad you enjoyed all 3 episodes
Beautiful guitar sounds great
I have really enjoyed watching the whole process
It has been a real privilege to watch you at work
Thank you
Thanks Alan. Glad you enjoyed it.
Hi David. Three really fascinating videos about such a great looking and sounding guitar. What really impresses me is how clean and tidy your workshop is. Always the sign of a true craftsman!
Thanks Chris. Plenty of mess out of shot!
I normally dislike flame maple in blue or green - but this is beautiful! Bravo!
Beautiful. Amazing craftsmanship.
Stunning work!
Very beautiful, sounds terrific
That body is looking great, so glad you posted this tonight.
Hi David, fantastic work. As always. 🎸👍
I don’t think they come any better than this. Superb.
That stain is beautiful, thank you for going through the whole process, well done sir!!!
Awesome guitar
Nicely done!
What a pleasure to see a real craftsman with so much skill
Thanks Paul, appreciate that

Absolutely STUNNING!!!! Well done. (beautiful soldering job as well). Happened to scroll down in 300 Subs, saw Flame Guitars had a NEW video. You can imagine my suprise to find several. Beautiful finish (My compliments to the Chef!!!!).The only thing I can think of that could possibly be wrong...is my address wasn't on the shipping label. Again beautiful job!!!! I watched all three episodes very nice guitar, I like the flame top and the color blue is very beautiful, great video thank you for posting it.
I have a Les Paul studio that I’ve had for 33 years it’s white with chrome and black accent, it actually has turned a shade of light yellow it was like that when I got it in 1993 the guitar is year is a 1984and the clear finish on it has cracked the length of the guitar it looks pretty cool
Thats a very nice build
Beautiful!!
You have picked the nicest flame top I have ever seen. I absolutely want that guitar!
Thank you. Yes, that was an exceptional piece.
Oh man what a guitar she looks great and it sounds so good! I really enjoyed watching this video!
Thank you
That is an absolutely beautiful guitar.
Thank you
That is an absolute beauty 😍
Superb work
Thanks Brett
A true master of your craft, i want to be your apprentice!
Beautiful looking guitar 👏👏👏👍🍺🇬🇧
So glad to see you left the back natural
Stunning work, congrats. Try this for setting intonation - play each string open against the next string at 19th fret (20 for B). It's easier and more accurate, prevents drift towards the high frets, avoids problematic harmonics, and you can hear the beating very clearly. You can also double check with each string at 17th fret played against the next string open (16 for G). After you do that play some 'D' shapes all over the neck and you'll be amazed how sweet and awesome it sounds all the way up the board!
Interesting. I'll explore that. Thanks.
Hello David, i must say each one of your videos is a pleasure to watch. But this series on building a Les Paul, that was really great. The end result is outstanding, that flamed top is gorgeous, i am really impressed by the quality of your work. Thanks for taking the time to share the whole build. Do you also build acoustic guitars ?
Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for you kind comments. I used to build acoustic guitars but haven't done do for many years
David, your craftsmanship, attention to detail, and talent is such a treat to watch! I admit I'm not a fan of flamed top "pretty" guitars but damn is that a fine looking instrument. How did your customer like it?
Thank you, that is very generous of you. And yes, he was happy with the guitar.
If the price is in my ball park, i could be tempted.. its always great seeing the flamed maple pop when the stain is applied, very enjoyable viewing fella, ££??
If you want to contact me through my website we can discuss flameguitar.co.uk
Nice work on that guitar. I loved the colour of the stain and how it all popped nicely. Well done. BTW what speed is your buffer running at...how many RPM?
Thanks. To be honest I'm not sure about the buffer speed. Not fast. Maybe 1200rpm. I know it was a suitable speed for buffing when I bought it.
Hi mate my name is stu, i started making guitars in lockdown, obviously i have a lot to learn from someone as experienced as yourself, im finding finishing the guitars to be a skill set all of its own, im really trying to do every stage myself, videos like yoursare incredibly helpful to people like myself. Can i ask what the stains are that you use and what is the water based poly? Can or spray gun? Many thanx
Amazing build! Cheers
Stu
Stu, I think there are two journeys; learning how to build a guitar and learning how to finish a guitar. Unless you have someone to teach you, learning how to do a good spray finish is a challenge. I use a professional quality HVLP system, which is pretty expensive. I am self taught and have made many mistakes along the way. Currently I am using General Finishes water based poly. I use a variety of staining methods. Experiment and see what works for you.
Dream guitar. Where did I miss the back and neck staining? Is there video of making the fret board?
To colour the back and neck I tinted the lacquer when spraying. See Ep 2 for the making of the fretboard.
beautiful! May I ask what kind of rags you are using to apply the blue stain? are they just flannel?
James
Thanks James. I can't recall what I used, but probably just cotton cloth.
This one turned out beautifully, nice job. Do you happen to know the weight of the finished guitar?
The guitar weighed 7lbs 12oz or 3.5kg. In the first episode I discuss the weight and whether it is possible to build a Les Paul style guitar that is lighter than this.
Would you replace a les paul standard with an ugly maple top with a AAA top like the one you had on your custom-built one? How much would that cost?
wow it turned out so lovely
can I ask what brand of stains you used for the wood and the top?
Thank you. I use quite a few brands. I think for this guitar I used StewMac colour tone stains.
not sure whats is going on but the pickups sound incorrectly wired??
Can you build a lefthanded version and ship to the US?
Do you have tine to completely restore my 70s fender Mustang? I have all the paint in a box but no time. Only the front of the headstock is still intact, i have 7 cans of fever dream yellow and a red competition decal stripe, The body is halfway stripped. It would entail stripping body using my paint and refinishing back of neck not the front, i can assemble. Sir get back to me i am not wasting your time. Regards
Greetings from Finland. Nice guitar. Just wondering what is the buffing machine's brand and model.
Hello Finland and thanks. I am am using a slow running grinder made by Axmister Tools. It is adapted to take polishing mops.
Did you not have to do any level sanding on the finish before polishing or did you just skip showing this step in the video?
I love the blue BUT when I first saw it with just the black stain I couldn't help thinking "leave it, it looks perfect" 😂
Your probably not the only one who thought that! However, that was the colour chosen by the customer.
@@flameguitars5770 the blue really does look fantastic, I'm sure they're really pleased with it.
What polishing compounds did you use please?
I use Menzerna compounds
My boss would rip me a new one if I stained like this...lucky you.
How would you do it differently?
Yeah what exactly would you have to do differently according to your boss?
Too much moisture added?
Hello, I saw your video about the restoration of the jaguar of 66 years. Sell it to me please
It was a customers guitar, not mine.
You seem to have lost quite a bit of weight. Are you OK mate?
Yes I'm fine thanks
Sound not so great
Amazing build.... i love it.... 💝🙏🙏.
Well, thank you very much
I just want to say/agree with all the other viewers that it has been a pleasure to watch the entire process from start to finish. Thank you for putting in even more effort than your work already entails so we as spectators can partake in the event as well as learn from it. One last thing: what gauge of strings and brand did you throw on it and what size and brand of potentiometers did you thrown in it?? Sorry I'm just a curious little beaver 🦫
Thank you very much. I do appreciate your comments. As i recall I think the owner chose 10-52. Standard CTS 500k were used.
@flameguitars5770 nice, good pots for the tone! Not a bad gauge for a Les either...
