Zirkel Wilderness (Colorado) Backpacking - July 2011

- This is a previously un-published video of my first Colorado backpacking trip to the Zirkel Wilderness near Steamboat Springs in July 2011. Jaden and I drove out to Colorado and met up with my son, Christian, who prior to our arrival had spent a couple weeks at the Vista Verde ranch in Clark, CO with a friend of his.
This video was never published because from a backpacking perspective the trip was a bit of a train wreck! Poor trip planning and preparation resulted in our original plan (4-day hike in the Zirkel Wilderness on the Continental Divide Trail) having to be scrapped completely due to deep snow on our route and dangerous/impossible stream crossings from the snow melt runoff.
But since I’ve been unable to get out on the trail lately in 2020 due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, I’ve been trying to find ways to create new content, and as I looked back through this trip I realized it would actually make for a good video.
Despite the change in plans it was still a great road trip, and adventure, with Christian and Jaden in the early days of my backpacking ‘career’. We were able to complete our first Colorado backpacking trip, squeeze in a couple days of car camping at Steamboat Lake Campground, did day hikes to Fish Creek Falls and the summit of Hahns Peak, took in the 4th of July fireworks in Steamboat, and even enjoyed watching some summer-time ski jumping. The video also contains the first ever Dunkin Donuts coffee ‘moment’.
For those who have watched my other videos this one is done in the same style - about 35 minutes in length, intended to bring the audience along for the 'ride', and with a still picture slide show with music at the end. If you just have a few minutes skip to the end and enjoy the pictures.

Right in my backyard. I love the Zirkels. Steamboat Lake is one of my favorite places. The Flat Tops also offer some awesome hiking. Could hear the Sandhill Cranes in the background at the lake. Thank you for the video.

Hello David, I lived in Steamboat Springs about the time Y'all made that trip, I lived in a house that had a trail that went down to Steamboat Lake it was around a mile one way, I've done my share of hiking the Fish Creek Falls area. Back when I was living in Vail in the 90's... We had alot of spring snow. We skied Arapahoe Basin July 4th while getting 8" inches of snow that day. Got to Love Colorado!

My Dad had adventures like this for me, we use to go to Lake Powell before it was a puddle. It was amazing and I'll never forget it!
I lived in Craig Colorado 2015 to 2020. I hiked the Zirkels frequently. Did the Mad Creek - Red Dirt loop, Zirkel Circle. We backpacked from the border of Wyoming/Colorado to Steamboat Springs on the CDT. It goes right through the Zirkels. You should go back on a low snow year. The last June I was there we had a major snow storm on the first day of Summer.
This I would rank this one as one of you top 5 videos! With it being your first Co. backpacking trip, with your son and Jaden and of course the introduction to DD, it's a great memory for you all. Looks like all went great !

I remember our first in Colorado. Backpacking the Lost Creek loop. On our first day, almost to our first camp site, my son took out his knee. Had to make a crutch out of wood and me and my husband had to get him down the mountain. It did not work out what we expected, but we did other trips that week and it turned out to be amazing. Thank you for all your hard work putting out these videos. I really enjoy watching them.
Moved from northern Indiana to western Virginia last year. Ever hike the Appalachians?
