- Everybody -- at least those of you watching this channel -- wants to wash their car safely. But when winter hits, and your driveway is no longer an easy option, detailing can get more difficult. Is the car wash safe? If so, how do I use it? In this video, we take you to a coin-operated wash -- and we show what to use, along with what not to use, for an efficient and safe detail. This is actually a video that includes decontamination, as we prepare to polish and ceramic coat this Mazda, so it's a very thorough wash. What say you? We love to read and respond to your comments below.

Pro tip: if hand washing isn't allowed, just go on non busy days and wash with hand. If there is no one waiting there will be no problem. Doing since years never had problems :)
This is the only game in town for us, pretty much always busy
Or go off to the side and do it that way.
That's what I do! 👍
Go in the morning or night too there’s plenty of self car washes in my area
Yep I go at night when it’s empty there
This is an awesome video. Real life conditions. Thank you Ivan and Nick!
Our pleasure!
Luckily it's a 8 Bay. During the winter they slow down alot so it gets alot easier to do this. They have raised their prices twice now within 6 months now it's two dollars to start a wash. That's not a lot to some people but when you detail vehicles that starts getting into your pocket when you look at your budget and just like the car wash you passed that I'm out onto your client. I think they're trying to chase us all away by raising the prices on everything. Thank you for replying
As a detailer (hobby) I am interested in rinseless wash however this video made it complicated...I wash getting comfortable with having watched previous videos you have but this has sent me to the starting position again!!
What complicated it for you?
a variety of different spray, it wasn
I know you know what you're doing. Makes no sense for me. I see a lot of unnecessary work and torture. As a DIYer, I would ceramic coat on a nice temperature day or in the warmer months and definitely not in these conditions. I wash my car a little differently at that type of facility only in the cold winter months. I enjoy your videos. I'm always getting great information and tips. You are a master detailer and I respect that absolutely. Great products too.
Thanks
Well done! Your rinseless washseries has been an eye opener.
Would appreciate a listing of "hard products" that you use: stepstool, pressure sprayer can, seat-crawler used for low level work, and chemicals in order.
Great idea!
Yes, i agree, have been wondering about the pressure sprayer can especially
What's that cylinder which was already pumped up for prewash and how to get it?
To me the entire point of winter cleaning is to remove layers of heavy salt and grime that can make corrosion etc happen or sensors go afoul, or otherwise make future cleanings more difficult. I go to a wash with pre-soak option on the dial. After that I either go straight to HP soap or HP rinse. Then if surface agitation is still needed I have a wash mitt saturated in pre-soak hanging from the mat clip. I then use the foam brush just to lightly apply tons of soap (having pressure cleaned the brush first) until the machine times out. I then agitate the entire vehicle lightly with the mitt, HP rinse clean, and then spot free rinse for the last few seconds. If you’ve got any extra time I recommend blasting your entire suspension and frame undercarriage! I also don’t apply protective coatings in the winter as it’s generally too dirty and too cold to get the entire paint surface dirt-free. That being said, early spring (before insects) is the best window to apply such coatings IMO.
Thanks for your insight
i like diy videos due to the fact they are real life scenarios i live in new england winter times are bad salt everywhere and im getting ready to prep my car for fall/winter time i like this video keep up the good work
Thank you.
I not sure if you were being intentionally oxymoronic and facetious with driving 20 miles to and from a coin-op just to come home and hand wash the car anyway. However, I really like the camera work that went into this video. Thank you!
thanks!
Pro Tip - At the car wash, start at the roof and work down toward the wheels last. This way you are working with what is mostly the cleanest towards the dirtiest. Plus all the soap and rinse water coming down cleans the areas below it.
Great tip!
Stating the obvious
Great video! Love all the commentary! Quick tip, lower the volume of your interim music, it's incredibly loud compared to the voice. Constantly lowering and raising the volume. Better normalization will help you with the content! Great work
Thanks for the tip!
We can do without the music
My commute from the "pay and spray is only 2 miles. I do a similar regimen as Yvan for winter detailing. I bring wheel cleaner, rinseless wash and spend about $5 to $6 to rinse the car down. I use two buckets for rinseless, one for the initial wash, then go over the panel again using the rinseless wash from the second bucket.
I then re-wash the vehicle with rinseless wash after doing the decontamination.
Excellent
Spraying the vehicle with rinseless wash before driving away from the pay-it wash has to be one of the best advice I learned on one of your videos a few weeks ago. I tried it and was pleasantly surprised the car was still wet when I pulled the car in the garage.
Thanks for sharing
What's really interesting is the car in the beginning of the video had ice and snow buildup on the rear deck, then when he pulled out the sprayer it was pretty clean already, must of prewashed it
Yep. Like nobody would notice 😂
Not pre washed, the accumulation of snow fell off on the drive
Yvan, I also wanted to ask. Are you making a video on safe snow removal from the car? Basically the hood, roof and upper side body or tailgate areas of the car or SUV. Snow Brush vs Snow Foam blade vs Leaf Blower or other ideas?
Good idea
This video will help a lot of people that live in snow country, much respect Yvan for sharing this, by the way I tried your rinseless wash on my wife’s car interior and was really impressed, thank you Sir 👍😁
You’re welcome!
Great video. I would like to see how best to winter wash without the pressurized containers. Not everybody has those in their arsenal.
You can get a garden/weed sprayer too, these are just nice because they’re pressurized so you can spray for a long time instead of pumping often
So I can rinse the iron off with my garden sprayer (marolex industry 2000)with rinsless? And then for a safe experience additionally wash again with rinsless for safety? Will it remove the iron off?
I use the brush but first I spray it down with the pressure washer to get the dirt and grit out of it. It is the only way to clean the film from or you might as well go through the automated one
Good plan
That's exactly what I do-pressure wash the brush and check it with a white shop towel to ensure I removed the grit and grime from the previous use.
Pro tip: move somewhere warm!
Ideally yes.
Really Informative video here. Great work Yvan.
Glad you liked it!
Very impressed with the rinseless wash. A cost effective product. If you calculate cost to benefit, rinseless wash is winning.
Thank you
I'm binging all your video on the DIY Detail channel here, and it's great! Another good very informative clip, i live in a cold weather climate, and it's winter here too! My car is also dirty (maybe not so much :) , just waiting for Rinsless Wash to come - and i just can't wait for my first Rinsless Wash (doing it in my garage), thank you Ivan and Nick for your awesome work!
Awesome! Thank you!
What's that cylinder which was already pumped up for prewash and how to get it?
Finally! One of the most neglected topics gets it shine! Thank you DIY 🔥
I’m surprised you used the soap. Aren’t these too concentrated for coated cars?
And was all clean diluted 15:1 in the pump sprayer?
If your car is coated it doesn’t care what soap you use. The DIY Detail All Clean is diluted 15/1
I dont care what that sign says. I will wash my hands.
Good
I found a microfibre cover on Amazon that goes over the coin wash brushes, so you don't scratch your vehicle. So far so good, but now I have Rinseless Wash.
Would love to see a video on that creeper you were using to wash the lower levels of the vehicle.
If you are doing all this work for your Son in Law's vehicle, I really hope he treats your daughter well!
The creeper is a prototype, we will have production units soon
100% on the creeper ! I wood buy one today if i new where ti go !!!
Items missed: I spray soap and rinse bottom of door panel with the door open, also spray the bottom with the wand handle on the floor spray inside wheel wells better.
Good plan
Wow....in the winter I just occasionally go through the car wash and just use once with soap and then rinse....I don't care about water spots etc since the car will be dirty 5 minutes after driving again anyway. Much less work
Thanks for sharing!!
I passed a diy jet wash bay today that had a separate snow foam lance so may give it a try to see how well,it works
Let us know.
what about the most important thing...UNDERCARRIAGE SALT REMOVAL!!!
That’s another video
I'm lucky my garage is attached to my house, and my furnace is next to my garage 😅
Good
Too bad fellow Montrealer Pan didn't make a cameo appearance. ❤
Neither of us are in Montreal actually.
I live in Canada this is way too much work. You’ll never keep the car clean all you can do is manage the dirt. All I do is pull into the bay select the soup and water option spray the entire car let it sit for a few seconds then wash all the soup and dirt off with water then spray the wax and I’m out of there. There’s no point trying to make it pretty in the winter it will just get dirty in 5 minutes again. Summer is different with the dry roads you can keep a car clean longer in the winter most of this work is a waste of time.
Lots of options out there for sure, but there’s no way you keep the vehicle looking pristine for very long in the middle of winter
Two questions: why did you not pre-treat the tops of the vehicles and isn’t the conventional wisdom that car wash soaps remove waxes and paint protection? Oh, and driving a wet car can only result in picking up grit and dirt. Entirely too many steps.
The top didn’t have heavy accumulation. The goal was to remove as much as possible in preparation for a ceramic coating. The DIY Detail Rinseless Wash dried quickly on the surface
Great work Thanks. I have to be honest after I got the vehicle that clean in the winter I would feels so guilty to drive it until spring. The end of spring.
It’s definitely a little hard.
Thank Yvan. Finally info on how to work your car in Québec winter. I really appreciate your knowledge ❤. The only downside now its I have to find a garage to work in 😂. Continue your good work and im looking forward on a distributeur for your product in Québec. Thanks all for sharing your tips, I will get me a worx washer. Bonne journée et bonne période des fêtes 🎉
Merci, and we have a distributor in Quebec, Waxit
Https://diydetail.com/pages/distributors
Do that in Wisconsin and the pre wash would freeze instantly😊
In Quebec, the weather isn’t much warmer.
It that Pans GF car?
lol, no. She drives a Nissan Rogue, not a Mazda.
😂 Always learning. Thx!
This is my son in laws car.
I believe Pan's GF's previous car was a grey Mazda CX-5, if I remember right. She now has a grey Nissan Rogue.
“And now it’s my turn to go into the wash” as two people cut him off lol
You hesitate one second…
Could you make a speed up version of this with your product I don’t want to make a whole day event
This took less than an hour.
Do you not spray underneath the sills?
We do, there’s editing involved
At 2:30 someone drove into his wash. 😢
Yes
I love this as a person without a driveway. However, what about people who don’t have a garage either? We only have shared parking spaces in front of our homes. And if i’d do it this way outside all cars around would get wet lol
Unfortunately you will need to control your exuberance when spraying.
I have been taking mine to the spray bays in the winter for years. I knock the salt and stuff off from winter and then back to garage for rinse less wash
Perfect
I did a coin op + rinseless wash a couple of weeks ago, I did mine at 6.30 in the morning. There was nobody about and no sign saying 'no hand washing', so I stayed in the bay to do the rinseless wash. Could you have handwashed it in the car park?
Yes, but it was cold out
Would you ever dry using a leaf blower and if so what make ?
We use one on occasion, but a towel does a better job
What's that cylinder which was already pumped up for prewash and how to get it?
It’s a detailing Keg
ruclips.net/video/5mTSak_uPFg/видео.htmlsi=kB7XxY-3dPReI_y4
i pay $20 for unlimited washes at local tunnel wash. two guys powerwash the heavy stuff off at the start, then i go thru the wash, then the air dryer hits it, then 2-3 more people at the end towel dry it with micro fiber and clean the wheels. to me the most important is undercarriage to keep knocking the salt off, i go 3-4 times a week as its on my way home from work. i love it.
Excellent
Hand washing not allowed but using a foam broom is? I say get your own broom and attach your mitts/cloth (if you dont do rinseless washes for some reason)
Time is money, and unless you’re inserting coins in the machine, you’re not welcome
I actually do this sometimes with my car at the car wash 🧼 It’s a cheap inexpensive way to decontaminate your car when it’s too cold to wash it! Great job 👏
Thank you
Awesome Video, Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
Very cool. Question: Does a clay towel remove stubborn road film from bottom of doors that are clogged on a ceramic coated car?
One thought you missed.......I HATE WINTER!!
DIY Detail Water Spot Remover is the ideal solution in the spring for unclogging
I THOUGHT THE SURROUNDING LOOKED FAMILIAR! tHAT'S WHERE I LIVE HAHA! granby gang
Oui sur la rue Principal
@@diydetailofficial ouiiiii
Ont va possiblement ce croiser à Granby un jour
@@diydetailofficial ça serais comique!
C'est drôle car c'était la première fois que je regardais ta chaîne vu que ta vidéo était recommandée et ça juste a donner que tu était à même ville. J'adore!
My car is less than a month old. I invested in a PPF for my hood. Truth to tell, it’s an ok job. He told me I can’t hold the spay too close and I bought some wash mittens. Also a foam sprayer for a car was that doesn’t work. I’d like to try your product suggestions for its next wash, likely next month. We get mixed weather conditions in Albuquerque, NM
DIY Detail Rinseless Wash is by far the safest.
Great Job Mr. Ivan. Love the red gloves.
Thank you
Wow..where do you live? Friday afternoons is the worst time to go where i live. Everyone wants it clean for the weekend lol
Quebec
Is it a good idea to use the iron remover and clay towel on a car that already has a Ceramic Coat? If so how many times a yr in a Climate Just like that. I'm in Manitoba cold and snow winters
Yes, it works well with DIY Detail Iron Remover and our Perforated Synthetic Decontamination Towel .
At 3.42 you say that you have the car prepped with BOTH All Purpose Cleaner (APC) AND Incredible Foam. But at 1:14 all you have put on the car is APC using the IK foamer. Can you please clarify. When, if at all, did you add the Incredible Foam suds?
We add a little DIY Detail Incredible Suds to the DIY Detail All Clean in the IK foamer
OK, now I understand. Not sure that Yvan mentioned this at 1:14. Many thanks @@diydetailofficial
Great video!💯💪🏼
Thank you.
What’s that table ladder called? I need one of those for my suv, using a step ladder sucks and scary on my incline driveway
They are called folding work platforms
I guess if car wash has demineralized water rinse option, you could skip rinseless spray prior to driving home, right? Then drive and apply rinseless before contact wash
Yes, but this is a rare option.
I looked thru the store and i have failed to find the item "ALL CLEAN". i assume I'm missing something obvious. Also what is that first sprayer you used outside of the car wash?
diydetail.com/products/all-clean
ruclips.net/video/5mTSak_uPFg/видео.htmlsi=kB7XxY-3dPReI_y4
Can you do this in freezing temperatures like 15 degrees F
As long as the car wash is open for business.
I tried searching through the comments but i can't find anything about what sprayers you used. I've seen them on some other channels but no one has replied to me. Would you kindly please tell me what it is?
we have a keg sprayer from a gentleman named Scott Graves, you can send him a DM on Facebook
Great idea to pre-spray foam using the hand pump sprayer.
Does it have a particular orifice size in the nozzle to achieve the foam? Will a similar pump sprayer from Home Depot/Harbor Freight* work the same?
Edit: or Princess Auto in Canada 🇨🇦
Yes as long as it has a foaming nozzle
Insightful video with some ideas that had never crossed my mind. Will be helpful in northern MN. On a ceramic coated vehicle, what is the harm in using a "basic" touchless drive through wash that is just a wash and spot free rinse? (not using the car wash's pre soak or sealant) Would there be a way to incorporate this?
Yes, those are great with coated cars
I dont know about you, but I feel like this guy made more work for him than he needed to. I get that he doesn't have running water in his garage, and I get that a full motorized car wash may not be near him.
As for not using towels, he could pull over to the side somewhere and use towels to dry off the car.
What do you think?
The point of the video was to prep it for polishing and ceramic coating
@@diydetailofficial and you could do that any time of year.
Yes
Cool 😎 !
Thank you
I've heard everyone warn me about the soap in these things, why use it here? Also, at what step would you use tar remover if that's necessary?
The soaps are fine in most, just a product of overthinking.
You can use DIY Detail tree sap remover after the contact wash.
@@diydetailofficial thanks so much for the reply! I was gonna use the tree sap remover before the iron remover after a contact was, and after all the chemical decon I’d do another quick pass with ONR before toweling dry with opti seal. Big fan of the channel by the way! You’ve single handedly made it possible for me to wash my car without a hose or driveway
Great video!
Can we use that decontamination method on ceramic coated car? Is this safe for ceramic coating?
Yes, absolutely
Did he say 256 to 1?
yep, one ounce of product per 2 gallons of water
bro's in QC
Sometimes, yes
Why the sponge instead of a wash mitt? And did you use cold water, lukewarm, or hot in those sprayers at the car wash? Ive used hot water in my sprayer in my garage and hot water in my bucket! Method and take a panel at a time..
The Legacy Sponge is the safest way to wash a car. Definitely having water at a comfortable working temperature is important.
@diydetailofficial I never that a sponge is safer can you explain why and provide a link to your products 🤔
And are you referring like in the winter time specifically or summer too for sponge use 🤔
Hi there just waiting on reply on the reason a sponge is safer to wash a car if you can allocate if it's more in the winter time or summer or both 🤔 thanks and a link to buy your sponge and products 😊
just drive thru a carwash ! 1x a week in the winter
That’s a good plan
Well you do have different shoes on?
Yes
Did some of the steps in this method this morning with an IK pro. Kinda reluctant to use soap in a coin wash.
Would anyone know if it can strip the ceramic coat?
🇨🇦🇨🇦
A good coating will not be affected by regular car wash chemicals.
@diydetailofficial Thank you!
Is that Pan's brother's car?
No, my son in laws
This method would be great if you have the large capacity equipment.
Yes
Thanks Yvan great video
Thank you
Would leaving rinseless on the car leads to water spots as it dries on the panel on the drive back? Asking this because when I prespray my whole car and took too long to reach a panel during my rinseless wash, I see dried grey water spots (though easily removable with a wet rinseless sponge)
The rinseless leaves polymer spots which u noticed just wipe away. Technology is crazy!
The Rinseless Wash when it dries easily wipes away.
May only apply to New Zealand; You're not allowed to use your own chemicals at one of these businesses though. They usually have a sign up that says not to. Also, it is impolite even if they don't because that is how they make their coin(pun intended). It would be like going into a movie theatre with smuggled snacks in your pocket, or bringing dinner to a restaurant. Furthermore, they store their wastewater in tanks and all the chemicals that go in there need to be on their MSDS(known safe to mix products).
It's up to the owner/operator of the car wash. Some places let you use your own soaps and bucket wash, as long as there's no one waiting for the stall.
The chemical wasn’t applied in the Carwash. They only really care that the time you are inside, you’re paying for it. In Quebec the water goes to the municipal waste water facility.
@@diydetailofficial thanks for the reply. It is "regional" after all.
I still miss real life rinseless wash videos like black Subaru with Nick...
They will be back soon
Please do another rinseless - Winter wash video❤️ check the number of viewers
Great idea!!, But I detest the cold.
Great video. Looks like you used the AllClean as like a pre wash. What was your dilution ratio? Thanks
always 15:1
15/1
I would if a guy could use that same hose on the keg sprayer on an IK foam sprayer so you could have a longer hose and be more flexible.
The IK could be modified.
@@diydetailofficial good to know. Do you know what brand of hose comes on that keg sprayer?
@collinhefley7392 unfortunately not
Is there a reasonable quality, inexpensive collapsible berm you can recommend for use in my garage so water doesn't go everywhere? Trees everywhere outside, frequently breezy/windy, and small yards in my subdivision so outside wash isn't ideal most of the year. I was thinking i could have 3 sides upright with the side facing the driveway open/flat to drain freely.
Unfortunately not
Step one: don't go: easiest way to get robbed, beaten up and have your car stolen
That’s not always the case.
Will water spot remover ruin the decontamination towel?
Yes, only use the following with the Perforated Synthetic Decontamination Towel
DIY Detail Rinseless Wash
DIY Detail Incredible Suds
DIY Detail Iron Remover
DIY Detail Quick Beads
DIY Detail Ceramic Gloss
@@diydetailofficial so will the determination towel still remove rail dust without iron remover?
@eddieblount216 it will remove the embedded metal, but will not remove the rust stain.
Can you please tell me what creeper your using to get around, I have arthritis in one of my knees and I think it could help….regards!
It’s a prototype I’m developing, stay tuned to our facebook group for updates
bit.ly/DIYDetailFacebookGroup
real question if I did all these steps until decontamination but instead of rinseing iron remover off couldn't I just re rinseless wash the car with the sponge? yeah it might smell but would that be an effective method?
Iron remover has a way of getting behind things, rinsing is advised.
Is it ok to apply ceramic gloss after every wash? So every 2-3 weeks? Or will that create a build up of sort as the previous layer is still intact?
It’s perfectly fine
Obviously it's not 0F there like it is here.
It was about-5c
Heated garage?@@diydetailofficial
@@Jaygorski yes the garage is heated
Got a recommendation on gloves for the cold and water? I see you got some on.
These are just nytril gloves. Ice fishing gloves work well.
How often do you rinse out the perforated decontamination towel?
After 4-5 panels
This is stupid man. Go to the coin wash at night. Hose the vehicle and get salt off. Drive home without drying so youre not adding swirls. Its winter will get dirty in 5 minutes
This was to prep for a ceramic coating.
What about all the salt on the frame and bottom side of the car??? It seems like you didn't clean it...
Correct
Next you will be drying the car in the rain !!
Sorry but i just dont get it, drives a car 20 miles to wash a car then drive it back 20 miles in the slushy salty gritty roads, only to wash it again.
We removed a lot of accumulation, and the surface had DIY Detail Rinseless Wash protecting it.
We removed a lot of accumulation, and the surface had DIY Detail Rinseless Wash protecting it.
Why not bring your own boars hair long handle brush to use at the car wash?
There’s a line up, and they don’t appreciate you using the space unless you’re adding coins to the machine.
Hello what stool is that your using ? I see your on your knees rolling around garage floor.
It’s a prototype I’m working on,
My garage is insulated. But not controlled. As long as it doesn’t get to freezing will it be ok to store my detailing products. Such as pads. Liquid. Bottles. In the garage. And it be safe. And during summer. Winter. Etcc. ?
From 33 to 100 you’re safe
@@diydetailofficial does humidity matter ?
Not in sealed containers
Yeah everyone has on of those pressurized kegs in there trunk, give me a brake. We don't have water but we have air compressor?????bs

How long did it take to do the clay towel step on that car
About 10-15 minutes
